The students participated in a mock trial of The case of B.B Wolf (a.k.a Big Bad Wolf) v. Curly Pig which was presided over by Judge Bergeron as the students assumed the roles of lawyers, witnesses, bailiffs, victims, and jurors. A big thank goes out to JoAnn Swartz, retired 23rd Circuit Court Administrator, Cristy Slocum, 23rd Circuit Court Admin-istrator and Circuit Court Judge, Ronald M. Bergeron for taking the time out of their busy days to teach the students how our Arenac County court system works.

Extended Year Program Available at Standish ELThe Extended Year Program, or Summer School, will be offered at

Standish Elementary beginning Monday, August 4th. The program is for students who qualify as At-Risk based on the State of Michigan guidelines. The program will offer two (2) sessions to choose from. The Extended Year program will cover National Common Core Standards and assist with refreshing students’ knowledge of subject matter learned the previous year. The primary focus of the program will be incoming grades 3-5. Please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Bartlett, Title I Consultant, at Standish Elementary for more information.

Reading is a Fiesta! Standish Elementary students and teachers said “OLE!” to reading during March is Reading Month. The theme this year was “Reading is a Fiesta!”. Teach-ers kicked off the event with a musical power point presentation and class taco building competition in hopes of inspiring the students to “spice up” their read-ing skills by reading more books! Students and staff attended a Fiesta assembly. Vikki Green, a talented per-former from Midwest School Shows, performed a bi-lingual ventriloquist act encouraging kids to read more, thanks to the generosity of our PTK parent group. Students enjoyed the wide variety of puppets and magic tricks, learned a few Spanish words and even a song during the assembly. Other events included a book fair during the first week and a book swap during the second week. Standish Elementary had several VIP (Very Important Person) readers this month. Mrs. Kenworthy’s second grade class enjoyed a bit of royalty as Miss Auburn, an SSC graduate, Jaeleen Davis, read a book as a VIP reader. Representa-tive Joel Johnson took time out of his busy schedule to stop by and read a book to Mrs. VanPetten’s 4th grade class. Thank you to all community members and parents who stopped in to read and share books with our students! Along with reading books, students participated in a variety of dress up days such as pajama day, crazy hair day and hat day. Classrooms also participated in a hall display contest. Congratulations to Mrs. Morel’s Class, winner of the K-1 competition, Mrs. Kolka’s class, winner of grades 2-3, and Mrs. Sullivan’s class, winner of grades 4-5. March is Reading Month ended with students meeting their reading goals and dressing up Mr. Fritz like a Taco for the day!

2nd Grader Attends Young Author’s LuncheonSamantha Davis and her family recently attended the Michigan Read-ing Association’s “Plug In to Reading, Writing, & Thinking” Young Author’s Luncheon on March 16th. Samantha’s personal narrative writing, “Sand Memories,” was published in the Michigan Reading Association’s 2014 edition of Kaleidoscope. Guest speaker Kevin Kammeraad, local Michigan author of several children’s books, en-tertained the audience with puppets and songs. Kevin sent out the message to all the young authors to write every day because those every day memories make the best writings. Over three hun-dred young authors, family members, and teachers attended the luncheon which was held in Grand Rapids. Samantha is a second grade student in Mrs. Williams’ Class at Standish Elementary. A fun time was had by all!

SSC High School News PLEASE SUPPORT THIS YEAR’SPOST PROM LOCK-IN PARTY!

Dear Parents and Community Members:

What is the Post-Prom Lock-In???SSC’s Post-Prom Lock-In has become a great addition to prom night, provid-ing our students with a safe, well-chaperoned night of fun activities and valuable prizes. Last year, over 100 students made the responsible choice to attend the Lock-In instead of a Post-Prom party where alcohol and drugs could be present.

Who can attend???All SSC juniors and seniors attending the Prom are invited to the Lock-In party. Guests may also attend Lock-In if they attend the Prom as the guest of a Junior or Senior SSC student.

When, Where, and What???Saturday, May 10, 2014, from 11:55 pm – 5:00 a.m. the following morning at SSC High School Games, music, sports, cards, crafts, entertainment, endless supplies of food, and lots of valuable prizes!

How can you help??? 1. Encourage your child to attend the Lock-In party! Parent support is key to student attendance. 2. Please call or email [email protected] if you are interested in helping with this year’s plans. 3. We accept all donations, big or small! We rely solely on donations from parents, area businesses, and various fundrais ers held throughout the school year to make this event a suc cess. We hope you will consider making a donation to support this event -- cash, checks, gift cards to local businesses, and gas cards are all welcome!!!

You may send your check (payable to SSC Post-Prom) to: Standish-Sterling High School Attn: Julie O’Keefe 2401 Grove Road Standish, MI 48658

We would like to thank you in advance for considering this request for your time and your donations. We need lots of help to make this year’s Post-Prom Lock-In Party a fun, safe alternative for our students. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Julie O’Keefe or Charlotte Fleszar at the high school: 846-3660.

Sincerely,The Standish-Sterling Central Student Council And the Post-Prom Lock-In Committee

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED TO PAY CLASS DUES!In an effort to eliminate the need for class fundraisers, all high school

students pay class dues of $10 per year. Class dues are used to defray the cost of decorations and supplies that each class uses throughout the year.

In their Junior year, the class is responsible for putting on the Prom. This means that the Junior Class pays for all decorations, party favors, food, and the DJ for Prom. It is helpful if class dues are paid before these bills come in.

The big expense for each Senior Class is the yearbook fee… each year the Senior Class pays for the extra pages in the yearbook that are devoted to senior pictures and senior activities. Other expenses for Senior year include Senior Luncheon, Awards Reception, and graduation decorations. Senior year is quite an expensive year for parents, so it is recommended that dues be paid in full ($40) prior to the start of Senior year.

Parents may send in class dues with their student at any time. Remind your child to ask the Class Advisor for a receipt and keep it with your records until graduation! Many parents make one payment of $40, but paying $10 per year is also accepted. You may mail a check for dues to the high school, drop it off at the high school office, or send it in with your student.

Be sure to note your child’s name and graduation year on the check or envelope. Make checks payable to “Standish-Sterling H.S.”

Powder-Tuff Volleyball TournamentRaises $440 for Charity! The new tradition of “Powder-Tuff Volleyball” continued again this year with another great night of men’s volleyball competition on Friday, March 21, in the high school gym. The Senior guys were the overall winners beating the Sophomores in round 1 and the Ju-niors in the Championships. However, the biggest winners of the night were three charities who the fans donated their admission money to. Our SSC community was very generous, as usual, and because of their donations the Student Council will make a dona-tion to Tommy’s Advocates for Silo Safety ($185), St. Jude’s Hospi-tal ($175), and the Arenac County Animal Shelter ($80). Congratu-lations to all of the students who played or coached the volleyball games, provided fan support from the bleachers, and the fans who made generous donations for a great cause. It was a great night of athletic competition and a great night of fundraising!

MS Introduces “Panther Hotline” for Students!

1-989-372-1751 The MS is introducing a new way for students and parents to communicate via 21st century, Panther Hotline! Panther Hotline allows students to leave anonymous text or voicemail messages directly to me. Once the message is sent to 989-372-1751, an email will alert me that a message has been sent. Your phone number will be saved with the message in order for me to re-spond, however, the number will not have a name attached. Panther Hotline allows students to report anonymously on various things that occur during the school day. In order to make our school community safer, I encourage all students and parents to save this numer (989-372-1751) to your favorite con-tacts, and call me if you feel the need.

Auditorium etiquetteThe concert season is upon us. Most of the district’s

concerts this year will be held in the 700-seat High School auditorium. Here are some suggestions that will help make everyones experience more enjoyable:

• Please turn off cell phones. • No gum, candy, food or beverages in the auditorium.• Once the performance begins, please remain seated. • Parents are asked to keep their young children seated at

all times.• Shhhhhhh . . . The acoustics in the auditorium are

very sensitive, so please refrain from talking during performances.

• Restrooms are located in the commons near the auditorium entrances. Please use them before entering the auditorium. Audience members getting up and moving in and out of the auditorium during a performance is very disruptive.

Your courtesy is appreciated!

Central Theatre Presents: “Harvey”7:00pm in HS Auditorium ~ Cost: $7 adults, $5 students

Middle School Students Visit Central Michigan UniversityIn October, two of our seventh grade students attended

Central Michigan University to participate in a question and answer forum with future middle school teachers who are in the midst of earning a degree in middle school education.

Mr. Ryan Dubey and Miss Adrienne Arquette , along with Mrs. Reese and Mrs. Bechtel, enjoyed dinner at the Malt Shop and a trip to the CMU bookstore before meeting with Central Michigan University students.

Ryan and Adrienne did a fantastic job of sharing thoughts about being middle school students, the culture of the middle school and ideas about how they learn. Ryan and Adrienne clearly shared heartfelt and detailed answers about the challenges and changes that take place in the middle school.

Both students were given a certificate of appreciation from Central Michigan. We are very proud of the way Ryan and Adrienne represented Standish-Sterling Middle School.
