Eesa (8N) Hannah (7K)

Hi! We are Eesa and Hannah! We are delighted to present

you with this new edition of the Perkin Post! We hope you

enjoy finding out the story behind some of our newest

teachers and finding out about some of the clubs going on

around school! Hope you enjoy it!

Love Literacy Week and Numeracy Week was eagerly awaited! We had

been promised entertainment, competitions, prizes and much more—

and the Literacy and Numeracy teams definitely delivered.

There were loads of events that took place: there was a murder

mystery in the LRC, daily reading challenges and numeracy words to

use. It was also fun finding out some of our teachers’ favourite books

and hearing Mr Barnsley and Mr Robinson read extracts from theirs to

us. Of course, the cake and Pi sale was a huge hit. On Thursday, Miss

Brewer organised ‘Maths in the Movies’ where we watched Moneyball

with some delicious snacks. This afterschool treat was in high demand!

On Friday, MFL got involved with the MFL spelling bee. Difficult

spellings in the categories of: countries, numbers, general greetings,

months of the year and adjectives. The spelling bee ended with a tie between Isambard and Newton!

The climax of the week was on Friday afternoon when Year 7 showed off their speaking skills in Youth

Speaks Out. Everyone did an amazing job and made the judge’s decision

really difficult. After much deliberation, Indya was chosen for her moving

and inspiring speech. We can’t wait for the next one!

Year 9 Drama this year has been exceptionally fun. Recently, Drama classes have been studying Theatre in Education (T.I.E.), which is learning through acting. Topics varied from e-safety, to bulling, to stereotypes and even covered drugs and alcohol. Miss Cryer and Ms Smith have been very impressed by the level of knowledge and skill the students have shown and have also taken pleasure in the amount of fun students have been having while taking part. The best strongest groups even got to perform their pieces for Year 7. Well done to the three groups that had this honour! One of the performers, Diya Hoque, stated: “It was really nerve-racking at first, performing in front of so many people, but it was exciting to teach the Year 7s about important issues in a fun and intriguing manner.”

Because William Perkin can’t get enough of Drama at the moment, there will also be a performance of the musical “The Little Shop of Horrors.” Miss Cryer and her talented actors have been working their socks off every Monday to make sure the play is perfect. Kiran Kanani (who’s the lead) said: “It’s a play about a blood-thirsty plant from another world. Seymour, which is my character, feeds the plant with blood

and body parts from many people which creates big problems. It’s a really fun play with a lot of stunts for me to do!” We’ll be looking forward to their performance in May; it is going to be amazing!

Thank you to Miss Cryer and Ms Smith for making Drama fun and

interesting across the school.

On Friday 22nd January, William Perkin had a special visit from professional

teachers from... no, not London, not even England...Hong Kong! Around 50

scientists from Hong Kong came to William Perkin to explore the amazing

Science department at our school. 10 students were lucky enough to give

them tours in the afternoon and tell them about Science at William Perkin

(and our school life in general). They

were really impressed with how

hard we work and the quality of our

learning. One guest remarked: “It’s really nice to see that everyone is so

committed to their education and to see how the positive attitudes and

school rules really amplify students’ learning.”

Ms Hudson and Mr Miall gave speeches and introduced them to our very

high-quality (and apparently, very different) way of learning as well as

explaining how our school works.

Shamima Islam quoted: “It was really fun to show them around and learn

about how school works in Hong Kong. They were genuinely interested in our

school and they kept asking questions which made me realise how

high-quality our school really is.” Thank you to Mr Miall and the rest of our

teachers for making William Perkin a school to show off and be proud of.

Netball has become even more high profile at William Perkin this year. Not only do all our teams continue to work

hard to make sure they consistently do well in competitions against other schools, we have also been having fun

with netball as a school too. Apparently a dubious staff team or two have also been put together!

On Friday 6th November, Miss Reid organised a netball festival for the whole school to enjoy. It included 15 teams

that played very well. The games were refereed by some very knowledgeable (and strict) Year 9s who had been

learning how to do so from Miss Reid. Teams were made up of a mixture of teachers as well as Year 7, 8 and 9

students. The players worked hard on the court to ensure their team did their best, and loads more pupils and

teachers came along to cheer on their peers. It was a chilly evening, but the players and spectators were kept warm

by the delicious cups of hot chocolate which were on sale.

In the end, Team 1 emerged victorious. In team 1 there were 3 teachers: Miss Reid, Mr Sangha and Miss Waspe.

They were accompanied by Suranne (Year 7), Dante and Katya (both Year 8) and Olamide and Laureta (Year 9). The

runner up team (team 11) was made up of Mr MacDonald and Miss Lovell, Karolina

and Petya (Year 9), Ishika and Alisha (Year 8)and Kamna and Hannah (Year 7).

Overall, the teams did an excellent job. What some teachers lacked in skill they

made up for in enthusiasm. It was also great to have so many students and teachers

come to cheer us on.

Thank you to Miss Reid for organising such an exciting event for us!

Year 8 Basketball Interform took place on 15th January in the Sports Hall. All forms took part and had strong teams to fight for the title, but only one could win. The atmosphere was tense, the air thick with the mix of shouts of competition and consolation. Everyone was sweating with the effort and the Sports hall was as hot as a bowl of lava!

Who won you ask? With a massive final whistle, the last game came to an end and Rutherford emerged as the winners with Watson hot on their tails. In third place was Pascal. Well done to everyone who took part!

Beautiful Bugs Finally, the day had arrived. The day of the visit of the man we had all been waiting for. With

boxes full of a strange type of goody, it was THE BUG MAN (Martin). Everyone was excited by the

opportunity to touch one of the scariest, cutest or weirdest animals they had ever seen. Tharany

in 8R said "The bug man brought various types of animals and the best one was the green

chameleon". Premi in 8P described her terrifying moment: "I was petrified when the big iguana

was right in front of us ". Esha experienced a roller-coaster ride of emotions during her session

with The Bug Man: "The tarantula was really fun, but at times it started to crawl onto my

face!". As well as having an enjoyable and exciting Science lesson that morning, everyone learnt

loads about the animals’ adaptations and how these help them to survive in their environment.

This was demonstrated by the introduction of a frog that could climb trees, and a

surprising fact that Iguanas have three eyes! What an experience! On behalf of Year

8, I would like to thank the science department for this opportunity.

Citizens Corner This term, the Citizens group have been very busy trying to make our community and the rest of London a better place to live. Currently, we are campaigning for a new area of development called ‘Old Oak Common’, which is not very far from here, and our goal is to make it a good place to live, economically and socially, for the future generation who are going to live there (us!). We recently did a survey, gathering all the views of William Perkin students about what we would like Old Oak Common to be like. Results show that our top priority is affordable housing, then hospitals, then primary and

secondary schools and then good transport. Thank you to everyone who did the survey and hopefully all your views will be acted upon very soon! Along with the campaign, Fr John has arranged a sleep out at Old Oak Common in March, anyone who wants to join should speak to Miss Alvis or Fr John—it will highlight important issues but should also be a fun night out! On Monday 25th January, the Citizens team went with Miss Alvis and Fr John to City Hall and met the executives from the Old Oak Common Development Committee. We presented them with the thoughts and ideas we gathered from the survey on how the development can best benefit the area around it. The area around the development stretches as far as Greenford so will impact on us all. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and we even took a little detour to MacDonald’s! We were able to express the views of the William Perkin community to people who had the power to make them a reality! Well done to the Citizens team for working so hard to make London a better and happier place to live!

The new year got off to a raucous start with Rutherford’s enterprise day on 15th January. The school became a glorious sea of green and everyone got involved. Rutherford were raising money for their chosen charity of Crisis. There were so many things going on, it was difficult to keep track: a bake sale; a market place where you could donate items that were no use to you and buy new ones; a talent show and an initiative to swap an item of your school uniform for something green.

Throughout the week, pupils purchased tickets for the biggest show in town—William Perkin’s Got Talent. Auditions were held earlier in the week and the acts which made it through rehearsed frantically in order to be ready to perform in front of the judges. To kick off the show we had Karos and Kayelle settling the audience in and introducing our wonderful acts. These 13 acts made it an altogether amazing show. The judges supported this conclusion by exclaiming things like "It was inspiring". In the end, the judges had to narrow it down to the top three. In first place was Shivam who’s hands became a blur as he skilfully played the drums, in second place was the golden-voiced Lucia, closely followed by Paloma with her musical stylings.

So we can now say with absolute certainty that William Perkin has got talent (as if we didn’t know that already)!

Goodbye, Mr Cadman! Hello, Mr Brain! We were all so upset to see Mr Cadman leave! Even though we were also

pleased to see him leaving to follow his dreams.

William Perkin was full of crying girls. However, we

are so lucky to have Mr Brain taking over, we are all

delighted to welcome him to the community. Of

course our music lessons aren’t the same without Mr

Cadman, but Mr Brain is doing a fantastic job of cheering us up!

This week we check out sketch club—we sent a reporter along to find

out what goes on in this club and to find out what its regular attendees

think of it.

Sketch Club is a fabulous club! Mr Hood and Miss Passi run the amazing

and adventurous club. Most of the students in the club say that

their favourite part is that you can make anything you think of—they

enjoy being creative! At the moment they are making rainbow bunting, waterfalls, a shoal of fish and

snow to dazzle anyone that comes into the room. Get involved, you can make a rainbow like Paayal in 9E!

Sketch club runs every Monday in room 3.21.

Now we here from the artist who produced this week’s incredible comic strip, Lea Haddad:

Sketch club is really entertaining, it’s the most creative club in the whole galaxy! It is run by a wonderful

teacher, Mrs. Passi! Sketch club is linked with comic club run by Mr.

Hood but is a little bit different. Lots of people love drawing so come

along and show your talent! I find Sketch Club to be a really relaxing 90

minutes. All the students work hard to support each other and reach

the goal of completing a magnificent work of art and hopefully putting

it in the Perkin Post. So what are you waiting for? Come along and join

the fun!
