Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel, State Street Ballet’s full- length original production of The Jungle Book is choreographed by artistic director Rodney Gustafson and ballet master Gary McKenzie, to an original score by composer and conductor Milan Svoboda of the Czech Republic. True to his reputation, Gustafson gives this production the compelling ferocity that trademarks the company’s new works. The ballet follows the jubilant and sometimes treacherous adventure of Mowgli, who is lost by his parents only to be saved from the jaws of the evil tiger Shere Khan by a pack of wolves. The wolves raise Mowgli, teaching him difficult life lessons as all parents must do. As Mowgli grows, he learns about the laws of the jungle from a loveable bear named Baloo and a black panther named Bhageera. When Mowgli is finally exposed to humans, he begins to question his own identity. In the end he realizes his place is among humans and not the animals. Are You Creative?

SB International Film Festival is pleased to announce that AppleBox 2011 will take place on January 29 and 30, and February 5 and 6. Children’s films, ranging in length, from around the world will be featured in a most festive and creatively-spirited environment! Organizations and entertainment groups alike from the local community will be providing activities and amusement for the entire family. While the full line-up has not yet been announced, this year we will be featuring a mix of independent films, along with Academy-recognized studio releases. What we do know for sure, though, is that on AppleBox’s first Saturday we will be screening Nathan Greno and Byron Howard’s hit film, Tangled. AppleBox was launched in 2007 by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and is co-presented by Santa Barbara Children’s Museum. AppleBox is a FREE family film program for children that screens the mornings of the first and second weekends of the Festival and features family-focused films and shorts. AppleBox provides those families whose income level may not allow them to take their families to a theater access to quality films in a festive, entertaining and supportive environment.

Last year’s lineup included the Irish film, The Race, the Spanish film, Carlitos and the Chance of a Lifetime, alongside the Academy Award-winning film, UP, which was introduced by director Pete Docter. We are very proud of the AppleBox event, and the message that it sends to children throughout Santa Barbara that film can be a magical journey of discovery, excitement, and creativity. With its AppleBox program, SBIFF has the ultimate goal of forming a love for the movies in a young child that will remain with them for a lifetime. We hope that you will be able to help us in our mission of encouraging this affection as well.

Phil Gilley, Executive Director/Founder of Notes for Notes and Christian Pearson

Phil Gilley: At Notes for Notes, we are honored to witness the genesis of young musicians finding their “groove.” One of those musicians, Christian Pearson, aka C-Rush, has found a voice and outlet via his music that speaks (or rather shouts) Truth. When C-Rush first came into the studio, it was clear that confidence was not going to be an issue. Over the years he has honed a sound, culture and truth with his music that resonates not only with his peers but with the community at large. Every song he writes manages to amaze its listeners, and that includes the Grammy Foundation. At just 15-years-old, C-Rush was recently named runner-up in a songwriting competition by NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) and sponsored by the Grammy Foundation. C-Rush is the poet so I will let him describe the competition and his musical experience. I wrote the song, “Crushing Drugs,” because I want to make my peers and adults aware of the effects that drugs can have on you mentally, socially and physically. Drug abuse is a serious topic that needs to be talked about and I feel that people will listen if I convey the topic through music. I also want to display the power of hip-hop and music in general by showing how it can inspire and motivate anyone. Notes for Notes and the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara has been a positive place for me and other kids to come and express ourselves through all the artistic activity of music. A lot of kids get lost in drugs because they don’t have the positive

outlet to release their emotions but Notes for Notes is a place where you can do it. They give you the opportunity to be creative and make a piece of art that you can call your own and that is what I love most about it. I rap because it gives me the opportunity to be creative and express my emotion through something I love to do and that makes me feel good. After completing a song or a piece of music, I feel a sense of accomplishment. This makes me feel like I am making a difference. I’ve grown up listening to rap and hip-hop music but the culture and sound of the music has seemed to decline with rappers talking too much about money, gangs and drugs. Many rappers seem to have forgotten about the positivity of true hip-hop and that’s what I’m striving for. We are proud to have a part in his music; however, it is his talent, focus, and dedication to make honest music that defines him as a true artist who has an incredible career ahead of him. Keep your eyes and ears on C-Rush!

Notes for Notes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth with free access to music instruments, instruction, and recording studio environments so that music can have a profoundly positive influence in their lives. The organization builds and operates recording studio environments, called MusicBoxes, packed with electric guitars, drums, keyboards, turntables, computers, and software. There are currently three MusicBox studios in Santa Barbara. For more information, visit notesfornotes.org.
