Plant Trees to Live Better
O ld-fashioned ways ofteaching like reciting
times-tables and verb conjuga-tions are better than trendynew teaching methods, say re-searchers.
Researchers believe thatreciting facts shortly afterlearning them is better thanmany new-style educationalmethods.
The "simple recall" seemsto cement the knowledge "inmemory" so it is more perma-nently embedded for use later, the Telegraph reported, citinga study in the journal Science.
Many modern teachersrely heavily on learning tech-niques like concept or mindmapping to help students re-tain the most from the textsthey read, the study said.
This involves drawing
'Old teaching methods moresuited for retaining knowledge'
elaborate diagrams to repre-sent relationship betweenwords, ideas and tasks.
But two experiments, car-ried out by Jeffrey Karpickeat Purdue University, Indiana,US, concluded that this wasless effective than constantinformal testing and reciting.
Karpicke asked around100 college students to recallin writing, in no particular or-der, as much as they could fromwhat they had just read fromscience material.
Although most studentsexpected to learn more fromthe mapping approach, the re-trieval exercise actuallyworked much better tostrengthen both short-term andlong-term memory, the studysaid.
A recommendation givenby the Anil Kakodkar
committee to hike the fees ofthe Indian Institutes of Tech-nology (IITs) from the currentRs.50,000 to around more thanRs.2 lakh per year has beenrejected by the Council of theIndian Institutes of Technol-ogy (CIIT).
The CIIT is the top deci-sion making body for the IITs.The reason that CIIT cited fornot hiking the fees was that itcould deter the students fromseeking admission at the pres-tigious institutions.
The council had met onFriday (21-01-11) to discussthe recommendations. It gavean in-principle approval for theestablishment of a technicalinstitute in Mauritius with thehelp of the IITs.
It was also decided at themeeting that the directors forall IITs will be appointedthrough a procedure involvingnot only the search committeebut also open advertisements.
During the course of themeeting, Kakodkar, who hadbeen earlier asked to come upwith a roadmap for the IITs,
Fee hike proposal for IITs rejectedwas asked to examine severalsuggestions that were madeduring the meeting and reworkthe report.
The reforms in the JointEntrance Examination and cur-riculum could not be discussedduring the meeting as Depart-ment of Science and Technol-ogy secretary T Ramaswamywas not present. A report onthe two issues had been pre-pared by Ramaswamy.
A considerable amount oftime had been spent by thecouncil in discussing the rec-ommendation that had beengiven by Kakodkar for finan-cial autonomy of the institutes.
Most IIT directors feltthat the suggestion given byKakodkar was too simplisticand autonomy would be diffi-cult to be attained by just a feehike.
Human Resource Devel-opment Minister Kapil Sibalhad not supported the recom-mended fee hike for IITs, say-ing that high fees would act asa deterrent for students whowish to pursue education at theIITs.
