A ground-shifting citywide integratedpublic transport network plan for thenext 18 years was adopted by the City

of CapeTown’sMayoral Committee onTues-day.This is tomeet the travel demandsof apop-

ulation which is predicted to increase from4.1m to 5.6m in 2032.The plan is expected to enhance residents’

access to economic opportunities and socialamenities.Mayoral Committee member for Trans-

portBrettHerron says it isCapeTownre-im-agined with an additional 10 MyCiTi trunkroutes on dedicated red lanes, connectingpassengers along various routes which in-cludes Metro South East (Khayelitsha and

Mitchell’s Plain), Wynberg and Claremont.Herron says the construction of Phase 1 of

MyCiTiwill be drawing to an endduring “anearly part of next year”.This phase comprises the inner city,

namely Hout Bay, Woodstock, Paarden Ei-land, Milnerton, Table View, Melkbos, At-lantis and Mamre.Phase 2 of the Integrated Rapid Transit

(IRT) component of the Lansdowne-WettonCorridor is currently underway.The concept design and operational plan

for Phase 2 will be completed by the end ofJuly.The detailed design tender process is run-

ning concurrently with the process for de-veloping the final concept.“Phase 1 is expected to be completed as

soon as Phase 1B has been concluded,” Her-ron says.

Phase 1B connects Dunoon to MontagueGardens and Century City using the Pots-dam (Koeberg Road) corridor.R110 m has been allocated for the 2014/15

financial year to finish this trunk route andsupporting feeders and does not affect Phase2.He says following on to the route identifi-

cation network plan, is the operational plan– comprising the level of service, fleet type,fare design, frequency and timetables – onthe identified route, to be submitted to coun-cil by the end of the year.The implementationplan –whichwill pro-

vide the roll-out plan, detailing the phasedimplementation – will also be submitted tocouncil by the end of 2014.

The business plan – which comprises de-tailed economic and financial assessment –will be submitted to council by mid-2015.

“The intentionofPhase 2 is to link theMet-ro South East (Khayelitsha and Mitchell’sPlain) and Wynberg and Claremont. Thefirst trunk routewill be connecting commut-ers between Wynberg, Lansdowne andKhayelitsha,” Herron says.The other trunk route will be connecting

passengers between Claremont, Lansdowneand Mitchell’s Plain, he continues.

“The missing links refer to the necessaryinfrastructure – dedicated red lanes, sta-tions and stops – to realise these routes,”Herron says.“It will be undertaken over three financial

years and the projected completion date isin 2016/17.”The construction will commence next

year and the City has allocated R150m forthis trunk route in 2014/15, R416m in 2015/16and R560m in 2016/17.

Influential community leaders have cometogether to put an end to gangsterism anddrug abuse in Manenberg.To this end religious leaders united to

pray for peace and to launch the first ofmany interfaith forums in Cape Town.The Western Cape Religious Leaders Fo-

rum hosted a “Prayers for Peace” service onSunday to launch the forum and introducethe community to the Safe Manenberg Cam-paign.Imam Rashied Omar, chairperson of the

forum, says the new body hopes to extendthe initiative to other gang infested areasthat suffer from similar ills.“Wewant to get religious leaders and com-

munity leaders to stand together to supporteach other and pull resources to see how wecan solve the social problems that our com-munities face,” he told People’s Post.The servicewas attended by residents and

local community leaders who all want to seean end to the violence.Father DonavanMeyer, Resident Priest of

the Baptist Church of Reconciliation inManenberg, says they were pleased by theturnout.“Your participation here is of importance.

We come together to pray for peace and safercommunities for our children,” a passionateMeyer told the congregation.After a musical interlude, songs of hope

and a showcase of local talents, the residentspresent were lead into a moment of medita-tion and reflection as part of the theme ofpeace.Omar says they have been planning for a

long time to get the forum off the ground.Mentioning the culture of religions standingtogether to fight apartheid, he says that rela-tionship will be of great benefit moving for-ward.“We have been fortunate that our inter-

faith relations are unique in the world. Thisis a legacy we received from those who went

before us and this is what will aid us in thisfight,” he says.With the current gang and drug problem

inManenberg, the forum felt the need to stepin and bring light to the issues.But Catholic Archbishop Stephen Brislin

said the issues can only be resolved by thosewho live in the community.“Although we come together in support, it

is impossible for someone from the outsideto come in and think they can solve the prob-lems of that community,” he says.The service also brought together motiva-

tional speakers to spread the message ofhope.Manenberg residents Ralph and Sebastian

Harricomb shared their story with the con-gregation. Both recovering drug addicts,they shared the journey they have taken torecovery and transformation which inspiredthose present.A convicted murderer, Ralph became an

absent father to his son Sebastian, who thenaspired to be like his father. At the age of 10,

Sebastian had his own gang at school andstarted using and selling drugs.“When my father was released I was al-

ready a drug addict. My mother threw meout andwe livedon the streets anddiddrugstogether,” Sebastian explained.“At the age of 13 we used to steal and gam-

ble to get drugs. Only after many years I re-alised I was throwing my life away.”In 2008, Sebastian reformed and reached

out to his father to help him change his lifeas well. “Today I see children getting killedand raped. I think back and realise I wasalso a murderer. I did those things, but Igave in to the Lord. Change is possible,”Ralph insisted.Another reason for the service was to

honour teachers in the area for the bravework they have done to ensure a safer envi-ronment for pupils.Manenberg teachers and principals unit-

ed to form the Teachers Steering Commit-tee, which courageously demanded theWestern Cape Education Department pro-vide more protection for the scholars at theschools in Manenberg.Teachers took to the podium to accept

awards commissioned by the AnglicanArchbishop Thabo Makoba.“All of these gangsters have gone through

one of our hands, and they have a lot of re-spect for us,” teacher AzrahNorton told thecongregation.“If we stand together, we can bring the

community back to where it needs to be.”With the full backing of the Muslim Judi-

cial Council and the support from all localreligious leaders, Omar reiterates that theyhope to take the interfaith forum to othergang infested areas.He would also like to see the body used

as a platform to break racial barriers.“We want to not only do this in areas like

Mitchell’s Plain, but take it to Khayelitshaand Nyanga as well,” he says.“We want to bridge the racial gap among

young people, because they are more opento change.”

MOTIVATION: “We must all stand together no matter where we come from,” Catholic Archbishopof Cape Town Stephen Brislin told residents at the launch of the Manenberg Interfaith Forum.

Police warn that vehicle theft at the Athloneshopping centre is on the increase.Shoppers say their retail experience has be-

comemore stressful since the spike in car theft.JohnEbrahiemsayshis son’s carwas recent-

ly stolen at the centre and claims no help wasreceived from the centre management or mallsecurity.“We couldn’t have been away for more than

half an hour. When we came back, the bakkiewas gone,” he says. “My son tried to get helpfrom the security and centre management, butthey just saidwe should go to the police station.Wekept explaining thatwe couldn’t go becausewe no longer had a car. But they didn’t care;they just ignored us.”Ebrahiem says he has heard of many others

who have fallen victim to vehicle thieves at theshopping centre.“People’s cars are being stolen every day

from the mall and I think that is unacceptable.

Either they need to increase the number of carguards and security or they have to install se-curity cameras.”Another victim, who spoke on condition of

anonymity, says his bakkie was stolen fromthe shopping centre amonth ago and he too ex-perienced a lack of empathy.“I don’t know if the mall has changed securi-

ty companies or car guards because therewerehardly ever any break-ins or thefts in the past.But now it happens almost daily,” he claims.Despite numerous attempts to gain comment

from centremanagement and the developmentmanagement company, no comment was re-ceived at the time of going to print.Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita

Norman confirms that break-ins and theft ofvehicles at Vangate are increasing.“There has been a number of thefts reported

over themonth, specifically at themall. Duringthe day, the Equestrian Unit patrols the park-ing area, and we are also conducting daily pa-trols there to ensure police visibility,”Normansays.“In addition, the Flying Squad patrols the

outer perimeters of the mall to ensure visibili-ty all around.”

Town’s Social Development Department,which advises against giving hand-outs di-rectly to street people and instead donateto organisations that assist the homeless.Mayoral Committee member for Social

Development and Early Childhood Devel-opment Suzette Little says council wants toensure that donations serve to assist recipi-ents not just for a dayor two, but in the long-term as well. She suggests that residentsrather support organisations who assiststreet people in finding jobs.“Too often hand-outs simply perpetuate

the cycle, encouraging people to remain onthe streets. We can make a far greater im-pact by supporting the organisations thatassist street people in finding job opportu-nities, reunite themwith their families, andultimately give them a second chance,” Lit-tle insists.Phone council’s toll-free number on

Helping hands


In an effort to combat the theft and resale of City-owned refuse bags, the City’s Solid WasteManagement Department has printed the letters ‘CCT SWM’ followed by a serial numberin black text on all its blue bags from June 2013. This will ensure that all stolen bags can berecognised and their source traced. Despite these measures being put in place, the Citycontinues to experience theft of its blue bags, which are then sold illegally on the street as wellas in some shops. The City is appealing to residents once again not to purchase blue refusebags at all as these bags are stolen property. The bags are usually packaged together with otherbags and folded to hide the printing. It can be assumed that all blue bags are stolen bags.Blue bags are used solely for all the activities and programmes of the Solid Waste ManagementDepartment’s Cleansing Branch.

Report any individual or shop seen selling these bags by contacting the City’s SolidWasteManagement branch for Loss Control on 021 900 1689 or e-mail [email protected].

If any blue bags are placed out on the roadside by residents, it will be deemed illegal dumpingand dealt with accordingly.

An aquifer feeding hundreds of smallfarmers with water in Philippi is un-der threat by a housing development.

The aquifer which covers almost 630km²under the Cape Flats feeds farmers in thePhilippi region with water to nourish oftheir crops.

Nazeer Sonday, the spokesperson for thePhilippi Horticultural Area (PHA), saysthat if the development is set to start, thevegetable basket of Cape Town will no long-er exist.

“The Philippi area alone supplies 1500tons of more that 50 varieties to residentsand retailers across the Western Cape.

“If a concrete development is to take placeabove this aquifer where will the water seepto? It could be disastrous for the CapeTown.”

Taryn Pereira, a researcher from the En-vironmental Monitoring Group, says ur-banisation of the area could have a negativeripple effect on the Cape Town.

“Firstly, these farms will no longer be fedby water from the aquifer and we will needto start using water from sprinklers andhosepipes,” she says.

“When we have rainy weather as we haveexperienced lately, the aquifer seeps hugeamounts of this water, which effectivelyprevents flooding as well, urbanisation ofthe Philippi wetlands will only a disastrousdecision that will come with huge regret.”

The farmlands which employs some20 000 on 20 farms is 472ha in size.

The wetlands is owned by Claremont-based business Rapicorp 122 which wantsto build a housing development called Oak-land City which will have thousands of resi-

dential and industrial units.Sonday adds that the PHA had ap-

proached the City Of Cape to assist it withthe gigantic task of preserving the aquifer,but has done so without success.

“We have hosted seminars and invited in-fluential City figures to join us and try tounderstand what the aquifer does and howit works, but we have had no luck in a posi-tive engagement.

“The City will tell us that they are lookinginto the matter and giving us hope thatsomething might transcend from our ef-forts, but this all goes to waste it seems,”says a frustrated Sonday.

By the time of going the print, the Cityof Cape Town had not responded to mediaqueries from People’s Post.

Thabo Lusith, the provincial coordinatorof the Western Cape Water Caucus, saysthat the caucus strongly denies the pro-posed development.

“We are against the building of a develop-ment that is meant for farming,” saysLusith.

“We are urging the City of Cape Town torefrain from building in areas that desig-nated to be provide water and food securityto residents.

“This aquifer is of significant importanceand we urge the City to look for land some-where else as this proposed developmentwill be impact not only the Philippi area,but the entire Cape Town region negative-ly,” says Lusith.

After months of de-lay and postpone-ment, the

Lansdowne Festivalwill finally take placethis weekend.

Proportional Repre-sentative councillorMark Kleinschmidtsays after reschedulingand uncertainty sur-rounded the event, thefestival will take placeon Friday 20 June.

“The date has beenregistered, the hall hasbeen booked and all thearrangements havebeen made,” he says.

Kleinschmidt and ahandful of councillorsstepped in to take over the arrangements af-ter the ward councillor took a leave of ab-sence earlier this month.

The festival was initially earmarked totake place in February this year but waspostponed to April.

After yet another delay, the event willnow take place tomorrow.

“The festival was postponed due to toomany role players taking leave and otherissues that could not be dealt with at thetime,” subcouncil chairperson GeorgeMarch says.

Because of weather-related issues, the

festival that was intended to be a week-longstreet fair will now be a talent showcase atthe Lansdowne Civic Centre.

With a budget of R24 000, the event willfeature local talents fromward 60 and is setto celebrate YouthMonth and the contribu-tions youngsters make to the community.

With limited space, organisers say onlya few local entrepreneurs will be allowed toexhibit and sell merchandise at the event.V The festival will take place at the Lansdowne Civiccentre and entrance is free. Properties were selected to appear on the Fourth Supplementary Valuation Roll (SV04) to the 2012 General Valuation Roll in terms of section 78(1)of Act if the property a) was incorrectly omitted from the Valuation Roll; b) has been included in the municipality after the last general valuation; c)has been subdivided or consolidated after the last general valuation; d) has undergone a substantial increase or decrease in market value sincethe last general valuation; e) was substantially incorrectly valued in the last general valuation; f) must be revalued for any other exceptional reason;g) of which the category has changed.

In terms of section 49(1)(a)(ii) of the Act, any property owner or person who so desires may lodge an objection with the municipal manager inrespect of any matter reflected in, or omitted from the valuation roll, in the abovementioned period. Objections may only be lodged in respect ofproperties valued on the SV04 Roll. The owners of these properties will be notified of their SV04 valuations in writing at the postal address currentlyheld on the City’s database.

Attention is specifically drawn to the fact that in terms of section 50(2) of the Act an objection must be in relation to a specific individual propertyand not against the supplementary valuation roll as a whole. E-cigarette users happily “vap-ing” in local pubs and restau-rants in Cape Townmay soon be

out in the cold, as the national De-partment of Health is consideringamendments to tobacco legislation.Currently, the “e-cig” cannot be

read into the definition of a tobaccoproduct in terms of the Act as it doesnot contain tobacco, hence regula-tions relating to smoking tobacco inpublic places do not apply.“Amendments are needed to the

legislation to ensure that e-cigarettesare regulated and this is currentlyunder consideration,” said MayoralCommitteemember for Health Bene-dicta van Minnen.The current status quo regarding

the issue was supplied by the nation-al department to the City of CapeTownwhen it recently sought a legalopinion on the matter. “We are notinundated with complaints, howev-er, there has been an increase in thenumber of enquiries, especially frommanagers and owners in the work-place.Thenatureof the enquiries arewhether smoking of the product inoffices and canteens is allowed; ifthey should adapt their workplacesmokingpolicy;whetherpatrons cansmoke the device in the non-smokingarea of restaurants; and whether thefines are the sameas for smoking cig-

arettes in public places,” she said.

Tobacco alternativeAccording to her, the City specifi-

cally wanted to know whether theycan enforce the current tobacco leg-islation on e-cigarettes.Electronic cigarettes are an alter-

native method of consuming nico-tine, the addictive chemical found intobacco.They look like cigarettes, but con-

tain no tobacco or other harmfulchemicals such as carbon dioxideand tar. The “e-cig”, which was pat-ented in China in 2003, is battery op-erated and converts liquid into a va-pour that is inhaled.Although manufacturers claim it

to be the healthy alternative to tobac-co cigarettes, there are some con-cerns over the possibility that the va-pour exhaled might contain harmfulelements. “The jury is still out on ex-actly how safe, or not, e-cigarettesare. We know that some establish-ments allow the use of these devicesindoors because they emit vapour in-stead of smoke,” said van Minnen.She says these devices are current-

ly controversial worldwide becausethey are so new and there is a lackof long-term scientific evidence tosupport their safety.“Some countries such as France

and Australia have gone as far asbanning the use of these products inpublic places.

Review“The World Health Organisation

(WHO) is currently reviewing theexisting evidence around e-ciga-rettes andpreparing a paper for sub-mission to themeeting of thePartiesof theWHOFrameworkConventionon Tobacco Control, which occurslater this year,” she said.“They are also working with na-

tional regulatory bodies to look atregularity options aswell as toxicol-ogy experts to understand moreabout the impact e-cigarrettes mayhave on health.”When asked whether the City

would like to see the current legisla-tion changed to include e-cigarettesinto its ambit, she was ambivalent.“Somestudies support theuseand

others oppose it. As stated, in the ab-sence of sufficient scientific evi-dence regarding the safety and ef-fects of the product, this makes itdifficult to support or not supportthe use of e-cigarettes in public plac-es.“Presently, it is not covered in the

legislation and we will thereforeawait guidance from the NationalDepartment of Health,” she said.In New York City, new regula-

Hijacking, theft of motor vehicles,armed robberies and house bur-glaries are some of the daily

crimes plaguing frustrated Mountviewresidents.Lansdowne police spokesperson Ser-

geant Nkululeko Mnyaka confirmsthese incidents continue to increase.Over the last three months, police

have been keeping a close eye on crimehotspots which include Bellmore Ave-nue, Penlyn Avenue and Repulse Road,he says. “Criminals have become moredaring and are striking in the middle ofthe day and early in the morning,” hewarns. “They have also targeted somehomes and businesses onmore than oneoccasion, which tells us that they arewatching these properties. It alsomeansresidents are not increasing security ortaking the necessary precautions to pro-tect themselves and their possessions.”Mnyaka says while police have in-

creased patrols during the day when lo-cals are atworkor school, it is importantfor homeowners not to be negligent.“We have identified hotspots and have

asked the visible policing team and sec-tor commanders to increase patrolsaround these areas,” he says.“We would also like to urge residents

to be on the look out for any suspiciouslooking person or car that they knowdoesn’t belong in the area. If anyone no-tices the same car circling the area formore than a fewminutes, they are urgedto take down the license plate number

and contact their sector commanders.Residents are also advised to avoid talk-ing to strangers who approach them intheir driveways,” he warns.Community Policing Forum chairper-

son Thetha Sithole agrees that residentsshould take responsibility of their pos-sessions and safety. “There are manypeoplewho leavewindowsopen, carsun-lockedandwhodon’t put on their alarmswhen they go to bed at night. These areall examples of negligence that arebrought up when people report inci-dents. Yes, it is important for police tobe visible, but these small actions alsomake a big difference when it comes tocrime prevention,” he insists.Sithole says another concern is resi-

dents not blowing the whistle.“It is only lately that people are report-

ing crime for insurance purposes, but Istill don’t think it is an accurate reflec-tion of the actual crime in our communi-ties. book page ran an online pageant insearch of the most admired missus in theneighbourhood. More than 30 marriedwomen vied for the title. Participants post-ed photos of themselves, tagged HanoverPark and awaited the outcome of the voteby family and friends.

The final votes were counted on Sunday8 June and thewinner of the firstMrsHano-ver Park online pageant was Faldielah vander Schyff.

Cape Town’s best basketball teams willdo battle in the inaugural Cape Basket-ball Championship this weekend.

The tournamentwill feature sixmens’ andsixwomens’ sides, competing for brandnew,custom-made trophies and a share ofR20 000.

Shaun Sishuba, owner of tournament or-ganisers Platinum Media Group, says hefounded the tournament to plough back intothe sport he has loved since the age of 12.

“Basketball needs investment and atten-

tion – that’s why I came up with idea andpartnered with the Cape Town BasketballAssociation (CTBA),” he says.

“I could have invested in any sport, butthis is something close to my heart. I haveplayed and officiated in basketball. Mostplayers don’t receive any financial reward;I have never heard of any prizemoney beingawarded at tournaments since I have beeninvolved in basketball. I hope this will growbasketball.”

The winning teams will each bag R8000.Sishuba says his company will host the

tournament for the next five years, afterwhich a new contract will have to be agreed

with CTBA. The inaugural tournament willtake place at UCT on Saturday 21 and Sun-day 22 June.

Pool A of the women’s tournament in-cludes the CPUTCats second team, UCT andLethal Ladies Basketball Club, while Mon-tana Vikings, UWC and CPUT Cats firstteam make up Pool B.

Pool A of the men’s tournament featuresHurricanes, UWC and UCT, while Pool Bsees CPUT Cats, Montana Vikings and theCPUT Alumni side do battle.

Sishuba believes these are the best sidesaffiliated to the CTBA.

“These teams currently play in the CTBA

Super League, the top league in the city,” hesays.

“The pool draw was held with CTBA lastweek. These clubs have all been part of theleague for the past 18 years.”

Platinum Media Group has also agreed tosponsor the Super League next season, headds. The tournament will kick-off with around-robin phase, before the top two sidesin each group advance to the semi-finalswhere thewinner of PoolAwill play the run-ner-up of Pool B and vice versa.

Games will take place between 11:00 and18:00, with the womens’ final at 16:30 and themens’ final at 18:00 on Sunday.

AMitchell’s Plain athletewon silver at the Interna-tional Powerlifting Fed-eration (IFP) World RawChampionships afterbeating lifters from 35countries.

Ebrahim Pregnolato(17) has onlybeen compet-ing in the sport for 20months, but managed toout-lift some of theworld’s most elite ath-letes at his first interna-tional tournament.

“Forme itwas the sameas any other competition.There were small differ-ences, but I wasn’t reallynervous,” he says.

“The only differencewas that the totals werehigher than at other com-petitions. Some of the guys from other coun-tries have been doing it since the age of 11.”

Powerlifting sees athletes compete in threeweighlifting disciplines: deadlifts, benchpress and squats.

TheWorld Raw Championships took placein Potchefstroom from Sunday 1 to Saturday7 June.

At equipped competitions participants areallowed to use equipment such bench vests,while raw tournaments sees them competewithout this assistance.

Pregnolato finished sixth in the benchpress after lifting 100kgs, fifth in the squatswith a 145kg lift and second in the deadliftswith a lift of 200.25kg, which earned him his

silver medal.He competed in the

66kg category of the sub-junior age group and fin-ished sixth overall.

The Woodlands resi-dent is a member of theMitchell’s Plain Power-lifting Club, which wasfounded by his parents in2012whenhis olderbroth-er Umar got involved inthe sport.

He credits the friendlyrivalry between theclub’s membership forhis rapid advancement inthe sport.

“Sometimes I don’t feellike training, but then theother clubmembers comeand I just join in withthem. It makes it easierwhen they are here,” hesays.

“We have a lot of chal-lenges in the gym. I compete against mybrother and the other clubmembers who areolder, heavier and stronger than me. I chal-lenge them all.”

Pregnolato trains every weekday for be-tween 60 and 90 minutes, and also plays rug-by for Collegians RFC.

He sayshis favourite aspect of powerliftingis the increased self-confidence and self-es-teem that comes from training.

Hamiltons can take a major step towardswinning the Super League A title and quali-fying for next year’s Community Cup withanother win this weekend.

Hammies notched up their seventh victo-ry of the season at home against Helderbergon Saturday, scoring four tries to win 40-7.

The victory has seen South Africa’s oldestclub climb to second on the table and theycan annex first place if they repeat the featthis weekend.

Current first-placed side UCT hold 35points from seven wins in eight games, butthey will not play again until late July.

If Hamiltons claim all the points on offerin their fixture against 13th place BellvilleRFC, they will increase their points tally to38 and swop places with UCT.

Third-placed Stellenbosch University willalso be out of action until July and this givesConstantia’s False Bay an opportunity climbto third – at least temporarily.

Maties have a 100% record, with sevenwins from seven matches and 32 log points.Bay have won six of their eight games andhold fourth place with 30 points.

This weekend they host eighth-placed Hel-derberg in Constantia and will be confidentof snatching all five points after the visitors’heavy loss to Hammies.

Primrose were set to host Durbanville-Bel-lville at Rosmead last weekend, but thematch was postponed.

Roses lost their last game to False Bay at

home the previous week and they wouldhave been desperate for a win to avoid slip-ping into a losing streak.

Despite the bye, Primrose are still 10th onthe table with 14 points after two wins, adraw and five losses.

Whether the unexpected break has aidedor hindered them will be determined on Sat-urday, when they host Kuils River RFC atRosmead.

Kuils River are ninth on the table, withjust two wins and seven losses and Roses

Two Olympic hopefuls are set to embarkon a programme which could help themqualify for the 2016 Games in Rio de Ja-

neiro.The duo believe the programme could also

lead to them bringing home an Olympicmedal. Mitchell’s Plain’s Grant Gold-schmidt and Leo Williams recently teamedup to participate in the Federation Interna-tionale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Tour inhopes of qualifying for the next Olympics.The beach volleyballing pair will travel toEurope at the end of the month to face offagainst the world’s best players.

Goldschmidt participated in the LondonGames with then partner Freedom Chiya in2012, but failed to make an impact.

The pair qualified via the Continental Cupinstead of the FIVB World Tour, and Gold-schmidt believes the lack of high-level com-petition counted against them at the Games.

“We were disappointed that we lost, but itwas understandable because we didn’t haveenough competition against the best in theworld,” he says.

“We take part in international competi-tion occasionally, but it is not regular so wedon’t constantly improve. We have to takebreaks in between international competi-tion and it needs to be constant. We learn ourlessons, then come back home and then waita while before the next competition. Thatmakes it difficult to measure yourself.”

Competing on the international platformwill provide Williams and Goldschmidt withthe high-level competition they need, but thepair will also need to secure enough pointsto claw their way into the top 16 of the worldrankings to qualify for the Rio Games.

Williams believes he brings a fresh hun-ger for success which can help them achievejust that.

“I bring a different drive and a bit moretenacity (than Freedom Chiya), as well as ago-getter attitude,” he says.

“We can do some things differently now;it’s one of the major aspects that I bring tothe team. We are already doing a lot of thethings differently.”

The pair have named their bid to qualifyfor the Olympics the “Road to Rio” and host-ed a fundraiser on Wednesday 4 June to fundtheir journey.

The first section of the “Road to Rio” willsee them visit Germany, Norway, Switzer-land, Netherlands and Austria before re-turning home toward the end of next month.They hope to rejoin the tour later in the year.Goldschmidt says a lack of funding is the on-ly obstacle barring South African volleyballplayers from participating in the full WorldTour.

While the fundraising event helped to payfor this first trip, Williams and Goldschmidtwill need to do a lot of more travelling toqualify for the Olympics. They are desper-ately searching for sponsorships to makethis a reality.

Williams believes a little investmentcould lead to volleyball players claiming Ol-ympic medals.

“I can’t say we are more deserving of spon-sorship than other sports codes, but I can saythat beach volleyball is one of the sportswhere South Africa could win medals,” hesays.
