This is what Parkwood residents showed on Sunday while taking part in a thousand-man march through the streets of the crime-ridden area. The residents took to the streets with reli- gious leaders and various role players from different departments in provincial govern- ment to unite against crime and violence in the area, sending a strong message to crimi- nals that they had had enough. Voice of Parkwood chairperson Paul Phil- lips said during the march he was impressed with the turnout. “I want to thank everyone who came out here today to show their sup- port. We must take a stand and take ownership of our com- munity again,” he added. Provincial minister for community safety Dan Plato also attended the march, which started in Abdullah Moosa Walk. Plato encouraged parents to speak out if their children were caught up in illegal ac- tivities. “I will not stand here and believe that a mother who knows her child, claims she does not know that her child owns a gun. I will not believe that a mother who cleans her house every day does not know when her child is hiding drugs in her home. “It is time that parents, especially moth- ers, take back their places in the communi- ty,” Plato pleaded. During his address to residents, Plato con- firmed that Voice of Parkwood had initiated a meeting with him which took place two weeks ago. “The organisation came to me with their demands. These are the same demands they are reading out here today and I must say that there is no reason why those demands cannot be met. We will have to work together to achieve the results,” he said. In a memorandum handed over on behalf of the youth in Parkwood, Sharon Agulhas said the community “has had enough of the inadequate services rendered by the Grassy Park police”. “We are calling for our constitutional right to a safe environment, to be respected, applied and instituted in Parkwood. We are calling for the counter services to come clos- er to the community by means of the estab- lishment of a satellite station,” Agulhas said. V Continued on page 2. Maureen Petersen, who read her memo-randum to the department of correction-al services, pleaded with the departmentto consult with the community before re-leasing parolees into the community.“In our plight in the fight againstcrimewe ask that the community be con-sulted before inmates are released backinto our community. These are some-times the same guys who communicatefrom behind bars on cellphones. Theyplan hits from inside prison... We alsowant the after-release programmes to beproperly addressed,” Petersen said. The memorandum was received bysenior correctional official Johan Vor-ster.Religious leader Bishop Edward Clarksaid with his memorandum handover

that the community would no longer tol-erate slaughtering of the youth.“Wewant the bloodshed to end and callfor the end to trauma caused to the elder-ly. We are calling on premier Helen Zilleto request a commissionof enquiry at theGrassy Park police station. We also callthat the stabilisation unit be deployed inParkwood.“We also call for a safety kiosk to beestablished in the community as well asthe installation of a shot spotter,” Clarksaid. The memorandum was handed to Pla-to.Resident Clement Sauls thanked thereligious leaders who organised themarch. “We are glad to see that they arefighting this thing with us,” he said.

Parkwood residents came out in their numbers on Sunday to stand together against thescourges of crime and gangsterism in their area, chanting slogans such as “No morebloodshed, no more gang war”.

NICOLE MCCAIN@nickymccain

About 30 sex workers were murdered inthe last year, according to statistics of

the Sex Worker Education and AdvocacyTaskforce (Sweat).A third of these murders took place inCapeTown, saysSweat spokespersonLesegoTlhwale. These numberswere highlightedlast week as sexworkers gathered toremember fourwomen found deadin different parts ofthe city. The group gath-ered in Oak Avenue,Kenilworth, where asex worker wasfound stabbed todeath; in front of theLoop Street back-packers in which asex worker wasfound strangled andmutilated; in Raven-scraig Road, Woodstock, where another sexworkerwas foundbeaten todeathand inSiteB, Khayelitsha, where a sex worker was as-saulted so severely she died.Sex workers and supporters had a mo-ment of silence and lay flowers in memoryof themurderedwomenat each site, Tlhwalesays. “Often cases of violence against sexworkers go unnoticed and there are no sus-pects found. Sex workers need to be recog-nised as human. They died in a brutal way

and no person deserves that,” she says.Sex workers experience violence on a dai-ly level, from a number of sources, Tlhwalesays.“Violence is rife. According to our count, ten women have been murdered in CapeTown since June last year. Cape Town is byfar the worst,” she says.A sex worker who attended the remem-

brance event, whodoes not want to beidentified, says shewas tornbetweenan-ger and joy.“Itmademe happyto remember thosewho were killed, butit makes me angrythat nothing is hap-pening and justice isbeing denied. Theywere slaughteredlike chickens,” shesays.“Everyone facesrisks each day, butit’s worse for us. Sexwork is criminalisedsowe can’t evengo to

the police if something happens. We feel un-safe while working because we face policeharassment, clients takeadvantageofusandwe are often robbed. No-one is looking aftersex workers and we have to work to makemoney for our families.”The criminalisationof sexworkdrives sexworkers underground and increases stigma. It makes sex workers vulnerable to humanrights violations and often violent death,Tlhwale believes.

‘Sex workersdeserve justice’

Flowers were laid to mark the place wherethe body of a murdered sex worker wasfound. Three other such murders werecommemorated across Cape Town last week.

LOTUS RIVER

Brick thieves cause worryCHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

A new crime trend in Lotus River hasneighbourhoodwatches cautioning resi-

dents.Culprits in the Grassy Park area have

caught the attention of residents and theCarola Way neighbourhood watch afterthey were found stealing bricks and pavingblocks.According to Carola Way neighbourhood

watch chairperson Neil Jacobus, incidentsover the past months are becoming moreregular.“We picked up on this trend a while ago

already. It has been going on for a fewmonths but is getting out of hand now,” Ja-cobus says.He adds the thieves sell the bricks.“There are guys that use trolleys in the

area and cart it around the area. They haveresorted to taking bricks from public andprivate property,” he explains.

R1 a pieceJacobus says the neighbourhood watch

was alerted to an incident inMontagu’s GiftRoad a while ago. Two men were removingbricks from the sidewalk.“We got the message and responded im-

mediately. When we got there we asked themenwhat theywere doing andwe told themthey are vandalising public property. Thenthey tried to explain that the contractorsworking further down the road said theycould take the bricks,” Jacobus says.“So we said to them that we will go ask

the contractors if it is true but that we arecalling the police in the meantime. In notime the guys just disappeared and left theirgoods behind,” he continues.

Jacobus says themenwere identified andthey have an address as well.“It is understood that these men sell the

bricks off for as little as R1 a piece. This isreally ridiculous if you must think howmuch it will cost a homeowner if they haveto replace that or go through their insur-ance for the inconvenience,” Jacobus says.Another resident says he witnessed men

stealing bricks on a road as well.

“I told them this is not on and immediate-ly got onmy phone. They thought I was call-ing the police but I was alerting our neigh-bourhood watch. They disappeared andeven left their tools behind,” he says.Residents say they reported the incidents

to the police.V Have you had bricks stolen from your property? Tellus about it. Starting with the word “Post”, SMS yourviews to 32516. SMSes cost R1.

A police officer inspects the place where bricks were stolen in Montagu’s Gift Road. Afterbeing reported to the police, the culprits who attempted to fill their trolley with bricks fledthe scene leaving their loot behind.

Celebrating women who stand tallTIYESE JERANJI

@jeranji

Mayor Patricia de Lille has praised blindwomen for their strength, courage and

perseverance in refusing to be defined bychallenging situations they have beenthrough or that they face every day.De Lille addressed women from South Af-rican Blind Women in Action (SABWIA) at

the Cape Town Society of the Blind in SaltRiver on Thursday last week.De Lille said at the event she chose to cel-ebrate Women’s Day with them as theywere the women who overcame adversityand refused to be victims. Instead, theytook action to empower themselves and seta shining example for everyone.“You remind me of the 20 000 womenwho, on 9 August 1956, made history whenthey marched to the Union buildings to pe-tition against the divisive pass laws. Thosewomen made a powerful statement thatmarked one of themost significant turningpoints in the fight against apartheid.“Like those women, you have also takena stand. Despite the physical challengesyou face every day, you make a daily deci-sion not to be victims of your circumstan-ces. Instead, your will to succeed has ledyou toovercomeadversity, learnnewskillsand use your time to serve people in need,”she said.

Empowering projectsSABWIA is an organisation that empow-ers blind women to live life to the fullest. It runs entrepreneurial projects, focusingon knitting, weaving and craft work, aswell as programmes that empower womenby providing social work services, place-ment services, computer literacy, office ad-

ministration and entrepreneurial training.Attending the event was Netty Coetzee(50), who said it was heart-warming.“We feel very excited that we are also re-membered. It makes us feel better that wedon’t live in a world of our own but peoplearound us notice that we are there and theydo things with us in mind. I’m so happy andvery excited that we had to come togetherand celebrate as women because there area lot of challenges that we face,” she said.

DonationDeLille donatedR10 000 tohelp the organi-sation run its programmes, as well as vari-ous food items like canned foods, vegetables, rice and wool.Lizelle van Wyk, CEO of the Cape TownSociety of the Blind, said women lived in atimewhere theywere confrontedwith socialchallenges but they had to stand theirground.“Do things for yourself, equipyourself andmake magic happen. Don’t let anythingbring you down, you have done a lot foryourselves,” she said.Elizabeth Maphike from SABWIA saidthey were grateful and they hadn’t expectedit. “It’s such an honour to have such anevent. We are really happy and it gives usstrength to carry on with the work we do forother blind women,” she said.

@ChevonBooysen

Pupils at Stephen Road Primary Schoolare kitted out for the harsh winter.

The 606 pupils of the school were givenraincoats and wellington boots on Wednes-day last week. The donation was an initia-tive started by local radio station Voice ofthe Cape (VOC), NGO Muslim Hands andthe Makro store in Ottery.

VOC adopted the school earlier this yearafter donating school backpacks and sta-tionery packs for the pupils in a back-to-school initiative which had started in No-vember last year.

Programme producer Quanita Kamaarsays the station decided to adopt the school“after realising the need at the school”.

“Stephen Road Primary is a school thatreally crept into our hearts. After our initialdonation we realised we needed to do morefor them,” Kamaar says.

She says the winter drive was started ear-lier this year to ensure pupils would bewarm during winter.

“Some of these children are not as fortu-nate as the next. Parents even keep theirchildren home when it rains because theydon’t want their children to get sick,” Ka-maar says.

“A child also won’t learn properly if he’s

in class and wet. We are trying to stop thatfrom happening by ensuring their educa-tion comes first,” she emphasises.

Happy to helpMuslim Hands came on board after VOC

approached the organisation. ImraanRoomaney, manager at Muslim Hands, saysthey were happy to get involved and helpthe school.

Roomaney says the organisation oftengets involved with winter campaigns.

“Just recently we donated 1500 blanketsto people in need. We did not hesitate whencalled to assist this school, when we wereapproached by VOC,” he says.

The organisation sourced the raincoatsfor the pupils.

“We got them navy raincoats and all pu-pils will be issued with one. We invested ina good raincoat so they may look presenta-ble and stay warm,” Roomaney says.

Makro Ottery marketing manager Muni-er Solomon says they helped the radio sta-tion last year and decided to adopt theschool along with VOC.

“We have sourced their wellington bootsin our support for the school. This is alsoour way of empowering the community,”Solomon says.

After being kitted out in the school hall, excited pupils received a food parcel as well.

Grade R pupils of Stephen Road Primary School show off their new donated raincoatsthey received on Wednesday last week.

erately operated in the early morninghours to make it easier to distinguishbetweenpeoplewho slept on the streetand so-called day strollers or job seek-ers who made their way to economichubs during daylight hours.

“They did not only focus on the ob-vious areas, like streets and bridgesand building entrances, but also ven-tured into the mountains above FishHoek, for example, to check for peoplesleeping in these areas,” she said.

According to Little, the City hasmade tremendous strides in recentyears in its efforts to address the com-plex problem of homelessness in a ho-listic way.

“It is not something that is uniquetoCapeTown, but Iwould like to thinkthat we have charted a good course inhow we address it,” she said.

Little said the City had three objec-tives.

The first was to help asmany peopleas possible who wanted to get off thestreets.

The second was preventative in na-ture – to stop others from migrating to thestreets. And the third objective was to sensi-tise the public through their give responsi-bly campaign.

“We cannot force people to accept our of-fers of assistance and there are those whoprefer to remain on the streets because itsaves them from taking responsibility fortheir lives, but we are determined to helpeach and every person who wants to helpthemselves,” Little said.

phenomenon it was important to look at dif-ferent aspects of the problem, includingcharacteristics of street people, pathways tohomelessness, the homeless culture, exitstrategies for homelessness and interven-tions regarding homelessness.

Suzette Little, mayoral committee mem-ber for social development and early child-hood development, said the street peoplecount coincided with an investment of justunder R10m in the directorate’s street peo-

Teamswalked and drove around their are-as and team leaders ensured that every areamarked in the map book was covered.

“The state of homelessness as we current-ly face it is different towhatweobserved justa few years ago,” Hendricks said.

She explained that homelessness was anever-growing problem. To understand the

About 7383 homeless people are liv-ing in shelters and on the streets

of the city, a survey conducted by theCity of Cape Town has found.

In the first of its kind in South Afri-ca, the City completed a headcount ofstreet people in the space of 10 days.

The surveywas done in the city cen-tre, foreshore, Bellville, Goodwood,Strandfontein, Parow, Wynberg, SeaPoint, Portlands, Table View, Tafel-sig, Mitchell’s Plain, Kuils Rivier,Claremont, Woodstock, Lansdowne,Lentegeur, Muizenberg, Vredehoek,Oranjezicht, Retreat and Milnerton. In each of these areas 50 or morehomeless people were found.

The City’s social development andearly childhood development direct-orate has revealed these findings. It ispart of a research project that set outto determine the number of street peo-ple in Cape Town, but also to gain abetter understanding of the phenome-non of homelessness.

PhenomenonResearcher Lynn Hendricks has

presented a report on the survey. Shesaid the reasons why the survey wasdone was to understand the phenome-non of homelessness, and tomake rec-ommendations for intervention strat-egies and implementation plans within theCity.

Hendricks explained how the survey wasdone and said that the City was clustered, using the Cape Town map book. Five teamswere allocated specific areas in Cape Town.

The five teamsweremade up of six perma-nent workers, four City work programmeworkers and four law enforcement officerseach.

A new musical adaptation of Zakes Mda’snovel Heart of redness will soon be onstage at the Fugard theatre.

Presented by Cape Town Opera andMagnet theatre the production will be per-formed by a multi-talented 15-membercast of Magnet theatre and UCT DramaSchool graduates and some of Cape TownOpera’s youngest members.

They’ll be directed by Mark Fleishmanwith music by Neo Muyanga, movementdirection by Jennie Reznek and designsby Craig Leo.

Fleishman saysHeart of redness is diffi-cult to define or package, but that’s exact-ly what he wanted. The musical uses ele-ments of operatic, choral and traditionalmusic styles to tell its story.

Shortlisted for the prestigious Com-monwealth Writers Prize,Heart of rednessspeaks of South African village lifeagainst the backdrop of a notorious epi-sode from the country’s past.Heart of redness shifts back and forth be-

tween the present day and the time of theXhosa prophetess Nonqawuse, between

myth and history; culminating in a mod-ern day dilemma of heritage and tradi-tional values versus development andgrowth.

V The production will be staged at the Fugard thea-tre in the city centre from Wednesday 19 to Satur-day 22 August. Tickets are available at Compu-ticket.

In an effort to create a more family-friendly park the Friends of WynbergPark have established a landscape mas-ter plan.Former chairperson of the Friends

HenkEgbrink tookPeople’s Post on a tourof the park and explained what the planentailed. The City of Cape Town developed the

master plan for the upgrade of WynbergPark, situated off Trovato Link Road inWynberg. This plan will guide future develop-

ment of the park. The park is used by people from as far

away as Khayelitsha, says Egbrink.“We want to create a family feel, with

play equipment, braai areas and a biggerfootpath,” he says. The plan entails widening the foot-

paths to make it more user-friendly formothers with prams, toddlers on bicy-cles, visitors in wheelchairs and visitorswalking their dogs.“On weekends there are hundreds of

people visiting the park – for picnics, con-certs, fun days, film shoots, events andbraaiing,” he says.

Egbrink says the upgrade will encour-age more visitors – to accommodate ev-eryone the master plan has been put inplace.“Wewant to ensure that thepark iswell

looked after and attractive,” he says. The City of Cape Town recently in-

stalled new play equipment for the chil-dren and paved one braai section. Thereare also plans to install more braai spots.“Itmakes itmore convenient for people

when the play area is close to the braaispots – parents can watch their childrenwhile they enjoy socialising with friendsand family,” he says. The park also boasts thousands of

trees.Egbrink offers tours of the park for peo-

ple interested in trees and plants.“We have schools and crèches that

bring the children to the park for the dayand they picnic and play on the equip-ment as well as learn about the trees,” hesays.Egbrink says while there is a lot still

to be done in the par, he is pleased thatthere areplans inplace to ensure theparkis well maintained for years to come.“We need to protect what is in the com-

munity and can only do so if we all partic-ipate,” he says.

Participating in sports is not only good forhealth, it has also been proven to bring

mental benefits as well as affect behaviourin class. For schoolchildren especially, running

around at break time or doing somephysicaleducation not only helps them becomehealthy kids, but also helps them to be alertand concentrate much better in class. This came to light in a two-day schools

summit thatwasheld atGroote SchuurHighSchool last week. The school sport summit aims to bring to-

gether educators and key role players to dis-cuss these concepts.

SpeakersSome of the speakers over the two days in-

cluded Prof Tim Noakes, founder of theSports Science Institute of SouthAfrica (SSI-SA), who talked about the power of sport,Justin Durandt, manager of the DiscoveryHigh Performance Centre at the SSISA,Catherine Draper from UCT who talkedabout the spirit of sport, Morne du Plessis,co-founder of the SSISA who also played forthe Springboks.Addressing those who attended the sum-

mit Du Plessis said sports played an impor-tant role in society.“Sport awakens hope and it has a unifying

role in society. Coming to school sports, when kids participate in sports they are ac-tive and happy. If sports make our childrenhappy then it’s very important. Without be-ing a scientist, making a child happy is veryimportant so if sports does that, it just showshow important it is. School sports improvethe child’s attitude, confidence. It doesn’tmean they have to excel but just taking partin any sporting activities helps a lot,” saidDu Plessis.Despite the challenges that schools face,

like lack of facilities and equipment, it wasemphasised that children must participatein a sporting activity every day. Clubs andschools were encouraged to work together.

Healthy marksDraper said apart from keeping children

physically active sport also improved theiracademic results.“A lot of kids that take part in sports do

exceptionally well in their studies. Kidsmust not spend more than two hours onscreen time, be it TV, TV games or iPads, asit has been proven that those who spendmore hours on TV don’t do well at school. To have an active, healthy child they shouldtake part in sports every day. That’s whyrunning around at break time and physicaleducation is very important for schools. Justby playing, it refreshes their minds and in-creases their concentration spans,” saidDraper.

They’re ‘mad’about educationTo prepare South African stu-dents with tools for their futureas the leaders of tomorrow, theMadcharityhasundergonea re-branding.The non-profit organisation,

affectionately known by its sup-porters as Mad, will now beknown as theMake a DifferenceLeadership Foundation, to em-phasise the organisation’s focuson leadership developmentthrough education. The launch of the new name

took place at a gala event hostedby former Springbok captainFrancois Pienaar last week.Pienaar, chairperson of the

Foundation, said despite thechallenges facing South Afri-cans, and the education andleadership gaps that desperate-ly needed to be addressed thefoundation has always believedin the vast potential that existsin South Africa.“Positive effective change

will come from strong leadersand it is critical that their poten-tial be developed through edu-cation and mentorship. Our re-vised name and brand was driv-en by the need to focus more onleadership, as this is key to cre-ating lasting change in ourcountry,” he said.During a press conference be-

fore the launch, Pienaar dis-cussed how the Make a Differ-ence Leadership Foundationraised the bar of education inthe country. He explained that the ap-

proach was to identify academi-

cally talented pupils, who didnot have the necessary finan-cial resources and offer themsupport for education, leader-ship and life-skills develop-ment.Pienaar said a key message

was that there was an opportu-nity for everyone in South Afri-ca to make a difference throughmentoring and supporting tal-ented pupils with leadership po-tential in all communities.“Imagine ifwecangrowanar-

my of young people who careabout this country, who careabout society, who care abouteducation. What a powerfulforce for change that could be.”V For more information visitwww.madcharity.org or contact AmyStevens on 021 974 6231 or [email protected].

EARL HAUPT@EarlHaupt

Riders hoping to enter next year’s CapeTown Cycle Tour (CTCT) will have toadhere to new, groundbreaking entry

requirements. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust

(CTCTT), which organises and runs therace, has announced a new entry system. An online “ballot system” will now re-

place the first-come, first-serve process, which the Trust says will bring them in linewith other international events. Such a bal-lot system has never been used in a SouthAfrican race before. This is in an effort to give every potential

entrant a fair chance of competing in therace by avoiding a fast sell-out of spots, which has been the case in the race’s recenthistory. Entries to this year’s race sold outin a record eight hours. The Trust has also increased the number

of entries from 35 000 to 40 000, butDavidBel-lairs, a director of the Trust, confirms thatno corporate group entries will be allowed, encouraging those who have made use ofthese entries in the past to follow either thepublic entry process or take up the opportu-nity to support a charity.Bellairs says these charities will be allo-

cated 7000 entries and the Pedal PowerAsso-ciation (PPA) will receive 5000 entries, which will be given to random members ofthe Association.“To honour PPA as founders of the event,

its paid-up members will be offered an ‘ear-ly-bird’ opportunity to register their interestin an entry to next year’s race.“Thosewho are unsuccessful in the initial

PPAballotwill automatically beadded to thegeneral public ballot, starting on 9 Septem-ber, giving them an additional chance to beawarded an entry,” Bellairs explains.27 000 ballotswill be available to the gener-

al public, with a further 1000made availabletodevelopmental associationsaswell as sub-stitutions.Registration of interest in obtaining a bal-

lot will be free and will open on 9 Septemberat 13:00.The window for such registration will re-

main open until 25 September at 13:00.

Prospective riders can register their inter-est at www.cycletour.co.za.Doing so amounts to an indication of inter-

est only, and will not ensure entry, and willrequire prospective entrants to update theirdetails at the same time.In the week following the closure of the

window for registration, successful appli-cants will receive emails from the CTCT toconfirm that they have been awarded an en-try, which will cost R470 per local rider.International entrieswill remain openun-

til February, or until the allocation of 5000

riders is reached, and will cost R800 each.Unsuccessful applicants will also receive

an email and will be invited to enter via asupporting charity or by means of the offi-cial substitution process in January.Successful applicants will have until 26

October to pay and secure their entry. Pay-ment not received before this date, or the ap-plicant’s option to decline the entry, will re-sult in that entry being made available to apreviously unsuccessful rider.

Standard practiceAccording to Bellairs, online ballots have

been successful in top European and Ameri-can sporting events.“Such systems have become standard

practice at key sporting events around theworld, including the New York MarathonandBostonMarathon. TheTrust, alongwithits three co-naming rights sponsors – CapeArgus, Pick n Pay andMomentum – careful-ly researched and considered all options, and we are confident that our new processwill serve riders well and further entrenchthe global appeal of the CTCT,” he says.“Wewant to avoid thousands of applicants

rushing to be first in line as the entry portalopens, and being disappointed when theysell out in a matter of hours.“Our intention is to create a fairer system

as it allows for a greater and more inclusiveopportunity for securing an entry. Entrieswill be awarded at random, regardless ofwhether interest is registered on the first orthe last day of the registration period. We be-lieve the implementation of this new systemis the bestway forward,” concludes Bellairs. The CTCT takes place on 6 March next

year.

Mitchell’s Plain girls wing it to the topEARL HAUPT

@EarlHaupt

The sport of rugby is flourishing in Mitch-ell’s Plain, but not in the way that you maythink. What started out as just a fledgling initia-

tive a little less than sixmonths old, has nowflourished into amovementwhereby, for thefirst time, three girls from the area haveopened spots for themselves at provinciallevel. The Princeton duo of Leandi Smith and

Shoneez Sabatini, as well asWestridge HighSchool’s Michaela Palmer, are representingWP at u.16 and u.18 levels respectively. The Mitchell’s Plain regional team is

coached by Shafiek Murphy, who is alsofrom Princeton, and managed by Rabia Al-exander.“If you look at the girls’ region at the mo-

ment, our rugby is only five, six months old.At themomentwehave threeWPgirls in ourteam. They just came back fromnationals inOudtshoorn and they won the nationals and

Michaela’s team (WP u.18) won their nation-als in Durban. Shoneez has (recently) beenincluded in the u.16 team,” says Murphy.Murphy insists that it wasn’t always easy

getting the initiative off the ground, beinga male coach coaching girls. He had to callon the likes of Alexander to help level theplaying field.“There was a need for women’s rugby and

because you are a male coach, you have tobe very careful when it comes to women’srugby. I then called in Rabia and she becamethe teammanager for team Princeton,” saysMurphy. He says that the girls play both sevens and

full matches and, depending on the event, the regions meet up at least once a monthto take part in a festival, which has takenon a league format.Alexander did not believe she would end

up being part of a women’s rugby team, butis thoroughly enjoying the experience.“Our girls are doing excellently and the

team work is great. First it was just Prince-ton against Westridge and all the other

schools, but since we have combined, thelove for the game is even better now.Shoneez (15) says rugby just became an

overnight passion of hers and that she seesa future for herself in the sport.“I just tried it out. Something just made

mewant to try it out. Itwas just abouthavingfun, trying our best and doing it as a team.Rugby builds me as a person and I am doingit for my future. I want to give my mothera better life, because she is doing her bestto provide for me, so I must do my best atschool and what I have, I must do my bestso that I can provide for her,” she says..Michaela (16), meanwhile, started playing

the sport after her classmates insisted shejoin them. She found the adrenalin rush shegets from playing is particularly addictive, while Leandi fell in love with the sport be-cause she is sporty by nature.“I first played touch rugby, but then WP

coach Ramsay came to our school and intro-duced full contact rugby to us. I run a lot andI run fast, so I love scoring tries,” Leandibeams.

For the first time in its history, the Mitchell’sPlain area has produced three women’sprovincial rugby players. Here are (in back, from left) Shoneez Sabatini, Shafiek Murphy(coach), Michaela Palmer and (in front)Leandi Smith. PHOTO: EARL HAUPT
