CRIME
Drug denblacklistTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Over 200 drug houses have been identi-fied in the Athlone police precinct. And as the illicit trade has residents
demanding action, provincial police saythey will leave no stone unturned in theirbid to rein in the culprits.Police are in possession of a list of 245 sus-
pected drug houses in Athlone alone.Bridgetown, Belgravia, Bokmakierie, Sil-
vertown, Kewtown and Crawford have allbeen identified as areaswith 20 ormore drugdens.Provincial police detective Captain David
Damons confirms the big guns will embarkon a number of cluster operations with theassistance of the police’s K9 unit as well asMetro Police to evict occupants living atproperties identified as drug hotspots.“The number of properties that have been
identified for drug dealing is alarming. Thatis whywe have stepped in to arrest and evictthose already searched and found guilty ofdrug peddling on council and private prop-erty,” he says.“We would like to appeal to the City of
Cape Town for their co-operation in bring-ing these people to book. Some of these caseshave been waiting for council action for awhile now. We can’t allow people to thinknothing will be done if they continue withthis kind of behaviour. We will be comingat full force and tackle the identified housesweekly until we have dealt with each andevery property on our list.”Damons says failing to confiscate drugs or
arrest the perpetrators the first time won’tresult in them backing off.“We will not become despondent. If we
don’t find something or make arrests thefirst timearound, wewill comeback.Wewilldo this for as long as it takes us to find theguilty people,” he says.“Yes, these culprits are smart, but we are
smarter.Wewon’t stopuntilwehave tackled
each and every case successfully.”Mayoral Committee Member for Human
Settlements Siyabulela Mamkeli confirmsthe City of Cape Town conducts weekly evic-tions from council rental stock.“Over the past few months we have been
working with local police and other special-ised units to gather information and evictpeople found guilty of failing to adhere totheir least agreement with the City,” hesays.“We are aware of the list and have already
had a number of successful evictions. Wehave many more evictions orders pendingbefore December andwill action themweek-ly until we have completed the list.”Athlone Community Policing Forum
chairperson Azizah Kannemeyer says it isabout time that authorities become seriousabout addressing crime in the Athlone pre-cinct.“Now that we have finally got police to ad-
dress our problems with force they need tobe smart about how they go about it. Theycan’t just go to one place at a time becausethen it gives the others an opportunity tohide the guns and drugs. This dirty businesshas been passed down from generation togeneration and criminals are very smart. They only need a second to hide evidence. It is also important that the community stopprotecting the criminals,” she says.“Often the neighbourhood watches are
more successful than police on our patrols.People aren’t scared of the authorities. Weneed to establish a better trust between po-lice and the community and show that thepolice are interested in protecting the peo-ple.”Athlone police station commander Colo-
nel Krisjan Verwant admits there is “a bigdrug problem” plaguing his precinct.“We will be working with provincial po-
lice on the operations to tackle the identifieddrug houses,” he confirms.V Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your thoughtsto 32516. SMSes cost R1.

A battle to stay aliveNICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
A 24-year battle for a healthy lifemay come to an end if a kidneytransplant recipient is not put
back on the donor waiting list. This is the belief of Irma Titus (28),
who was being treated for kidneyfailure at Groote Schuur Hospital.
But after four transplants, she hasbeen informed that she is no longera viable candidate to receive a neworgan due to tissue damage.
“The worst case scenario is that Imight die next week,” she says.
The Hanover Park resident hasbeen battling kidney failure sincethe age of four.
In desperate need of treatment, thebest case scenario is that Tituswould be receiving dialysis treat-ment next week.
However, this seems less likely asshe is also no longer a candidate.
This treatment is only offered tothose considered as viable trans-plant patients.
Provincial health departmentspokesperson Sithembiso Magubanesays the public sector is taking astrain with the increase of patientsrequiring dialysis and transplants.
“We are facing an exponential in-crease in patients due to the risingtide of diabetes, hypertension and HIV. Weare very limited in terms of dialysis facili-ties and, unfortunately, transplant rateshave fallen considerably due to the shortageof organs,” he says.
“Our unit alone has over 100 people wait-ing for a transplant and over 30 people onthe waiting list for life-saving dialysis. Mostpatients wait over two to three years to re-ceive a transplant.”
As a result of this major problem, the de-
partment has developed criteria for accept-ance to the Renal Replacement Programme,Magubane explains.
“The overriding criterium for acceptanceis suitability for transplantation. Unfortu-nately many patients are not suitable for atransplant for a variety of reasons and weare unable to accommodate them,” he says.
Titus has been left shell-shocked by thenews.
“When you’ve come to see the nurses and
doctors as your family, being toldthey are no longer able to help you isdevastating,” she says.
Only able to afford public health-care, Titus now needs help to foot aR50 000 bill to receive dialysisthrough private medical care.
Receiving this treatment will notonly prolong her life, but also makeit possible for her to receive anothertransplant, Titus believes.
On obtaining a second opinion, Ti-tus was told despite the tissue damagethere is a 50/50 chance that anothertransplant would be successful, mak-ing her a high risk candidate.
Added to this, she says, if she wasable to receive dialysis her conditionmay stabilise, thereby reducing herrisk as a transplant candidate.
“I’ve been fortunate that I don’t suf-fer from many symptoms like waterretention, but I do have anaemiawhich means I often have shortnessof breath due to low oxygen in myblood,” she says.
Her condition means she had todrop out of her studies and can onlymanage part-time work to pay thebills.
She has since managed to join amedical aid, but her funds will onlybe available in 2015.
“But I’ll be dead by next year,” shesays.
Her friends and loved ones are not givingup yet.
They have established Kidney for aKadre, a fundraising campaign which aimsto raise funds to cover the cost of dialysis.
Through donations and events, fundshave been trickling in.
However, the income is a far cry of thethousands needed to keep Titus alive.V To donate, like Kidney for a Kadre on Facebook andinbox the page administrator.

BRIDGETOWN
Drug house to get new ownerTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Drug addicts have taken ownership ofan abandoned Bridgetown house. The property has been vacant
since the owner was stabbed to death lastyear. After the incident, the council-owned
property in Reagon Crescent has not yethad a new tenant and has instead becomethe prime hideout for substance abusersand petty thieves. There are five shacks on the property
that have been erected illegally.Drug addicts often use the empty house
to smoke inanddagga treeswere confiscat-ed from the “garden” by neighbourhoodwatch members last week.In addition, residents say trollies are
usually loaded off at the house and stolengoods have been recovered from the prop-erty.Bridgetown Neighbourhood Watch
spokesperson Bradley Peters says homesimmediately adjacent to the problemhouse are the most affected by the proper-ty’s state.“The health, safety and security of peo-
ple living close to the property is negative-ly affected by the people hanging out atthat premises. Every week we confiscategoods and arrest people there. It is a majorproblem and we have been pleading withtheward councillor formonths to do some-thing about this house,” he says.“The old woman who lived here before
died as a result of crime and nowher houseis being used for criminal activity. Eitherit needs to be demolished or council has torestore the property and give someone onthe housing waiting list an opportunity tolive there.”Peters says if the house is occupied,
therewill be less opportunity for criminalsto get comfortable.“At themoment they are living rent-free.
They don’t pay a cent forwater or electrici-ty because it is illegally obtained. Policehave raided the property on several occa-sions – I don’t know what more can bedone.”Neighbour Maurene Lawrence says she
believes the state of the council housebrings down the property values of the sur-rounding homes and directly influencesthe crime rate.“Since the vagrants and druggies started
sleeping and hanging out there, we seemany more unwanted elements roamingthe neighbourhood. I have never lived infear as I do now,” she seethes.“Every day a business or house is bur-
gled. This used to be a quiet street, but nowdrugs and criminal elements are slowly fil-tering in from the surrounding areas.”Mayoral Committee member for Human
Settlements Siyabulela Mamkeli says thedepartmenthas only recentlybeennotifiedof the problem and is in the process of allo-
cating the property to a tenant.“We are in the process of finding new ac-
commodation for the backyard dwellers aswe cannot remove them from the propertywithout providing an alternative solution.Investigations carried out by local police aswell as Metro Police are still continuing,” hesays.“Once we have cleared the backyard and
managed to find suitable accommodation forthe squatters, we will be able to clean theproperty and allocate the house to someoneon our housingwaiting list.We are exploring
different ideas on how to resolve the problembut no permanent solution has yet beenfound.”Resident Alison Oliver says the problem is
keeping evicted tenants away.
“It is a continuous cycle. They have be-come comfortable because some people givethem money. They live here for free. Weneedmore input from the policewith patrolsto keep these people away.”

SCAM ALERT
Don’t be engaged by‘Telkom technicians’Telkom customers: be warned.
The telecommunications gianthas confirmed social media reports
of criminals posing as employees hittinghomes and pilfering valuables.
Telkom spokesperson Jacqui O’Sulli-van says businesses are also being tar-geted.
The crooks pose as technicians to gainentry into the premises, she confirms.
“The evolving modus operandi of thesuspected criminals is of great concern,”she says.
Upon entry to someone’s property, thesuspects apparently steal laptops, cell-phones, cash and other valuables.
“The perpetrators arrive unan-nounced and claim that they need to up-grade telephone or internet lines,” shesays.
This spate of thefts by bogus techni-cians have also been reported in otherprovinces.
“The Telkom Assets and Revenue Pro-tection Services division is workingclosely with the police in investigatingthese crimes,” O’Sullivan says.
She advises customers to demand tosee the identity cards of Telkom techni-cians before allowing them access to theproperty.
“Residents must also ask techniciansto quote the relevant reference numberthat has been assigned to the customerfor a fault repair or new installation be-fore allowing them onto their premises.”
People who have not requested anyservice from Telkom should be particu-larly wary. “These basic precautionsmust be communicated to every personwho is likely to be at home during theday, including domestic employees.”
At the same time, she says the compa-ny does not want the work of their legiti-mate technicians to be unnecessarilyhampered.
However, should customers be suspi-cious, they are advised to call Telkom on0800 47 47 47 for verification of the IDcard and to confirm employment of tech-nicians.
Contact Telkom’s fraud hotline on0800 124 000 or the nearest police stationto report suspicious individuals.

the prostitution and drinking that takesplace in the road for months now. We havedrawn up a petition and have put in an ap-plication to council to have it closed down,”he says.“We think that this will be in the best in-
terest of residents living close to that roadas well as for neighbourhood watch mem-bers and police who constantly need to re-spond to incidents in that vicinity.”Mayoral Committee member for Safety
and Security JP Smith confirms that the ar-ea has been a hotspot in many operationswhen it comes to policing prostitution.“Our Vice Squad has conducted numer-
ous operations in the past in the area. Itis an isolated area with little lighting andcreates the perfect setting for criminal ac-tivity to take place,” he says.“Our special unit has previously appre-
hended four suspects in compromising po-sitions on separate occasions and issuedfines.”Ward councillor Magadien Davids says
he supports residents’ appeal to have theroad closed.“Investigations are being conducted by
various line departments to determinewhether it will be possible to close the
road,” he says.“There are no public facilities situated in
the vicinity. This makes it easier to deter-mine a decision.”ResidentMarlene Coetzee says she is dis-
gusted when she looks out of her windowand sees the activity happening in the neardark.“Cars park there almost every night and
sometimes women stand there. I havelogged many complaints with council andfeel strongly about closing the road. Notmany people use it and there are no housesin the road,” she says.Weekends pose a different problem, Co-
etzee continues.“After racing, young people also park
there to drink and smoke. The road servesno purpose other than for crime.”Resident Oliver Lategan agrees and feels
it is in the best interest of the youth to havethe hangout closed.“There are many programmes running
in the area to get children involved withpositive activities. We don’t need youngpeople being exposed to prostitution andsubstance abuse,” he insists.Athlone police spokespersonSergeant Zi-
ta Norman says police support the home-owners’ closure application.“Here aremany roads and secluded spots
in this area not being used by traffic or resi-dents. It easily becomes anareawhere pros-titutes conduct their business. This neigh-bourhood is always busy on weekends andhas a lot of people coming into the area fromsurrounding suburbs either for food, dragracing or other illegal activities,” she says.“As a result, prostitution and drug abuse
remain big problems, especially overweek-ends. By fencing areas that are not beingused, it makes it easier for police to patroland arrest suspects.”V Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your thoughtsto 32516. SMSes cost R1.

Do you know this man?Police have issued an identikit
for the suspect wanted in connec-tion with the murder of the mother of aManenberg police officer.
The 71-year-old woman was killed andher 44-year-old son injured inthe shooting last Monday.
The twowerehomealone atthe time of the incident.
According to police, the de-tective’s brother answered aknock at the door of their Ta-gus Road home at 19:00 thatnight.
The gunman apparentlyasked for someone, who theson said did not live there.
As the suspect walkedaway, he turned around andshot the man in the chest.
The victim tried to escape and the gun-man fired more shots, hitting him in thehead and back.
The perpetrator then entered thehome and fired a single shot at the 71-year-old, hitting her in the stomach andkilling her.
The suspect fled on foot. Those working in gang units fear for
the safety of their loved ones, officers ad-mit. Policemen say there is noprotectionfor the families of officers working for
special units, especially those who livein the area in which they work.
A police source, who asked not to benamed, says the officer is well-known inManenberg andwas born andbred in thearea.
“He is passionate about getting drugsand gangsterismoff the streets,” he says.
“Taking out an officer’s family is cow-ardly. They took his lovedones because they couldn’tget to him.”
The detective’smotherwasburied last Tuesday in ac-cordance with Muslim rites.
His brother remains in acritical condition.
Provincial Community Po-lice Board chairpersonMagdalene Moos says the of-ficer “was clearly the targetof these evil-doers”.
“An attempt on the lives ofthese officers is an act of treason andmust be dealt with with the severest ofpunishment,” she says.
“To those responsible for these evilacts: your days are numbered.”
Provincial police spokesperson Cap-tain FC Van Wyk says cases of murderandattemptedmurder areunder investi-gation.No arrest has been made.

FIREWORKS
Use with careLight up responsibly.
This is the appeal issued by the Cityof Cape Town, which warns that safety
is key in preventing tragedies in the build-up to fireworks season. With Diwali and Guy Fawkes around the
corner, council’s enforcement agencies areonce more preparing for a flood of com-plaints about the illegal discharge of fire-works and related incidents.Last November, LawEnforcement confis-
cated 12 865 fireworks from illegal traders. In addition, Law Enforcement and Metro
Police officers responded to a total of 385complaints on Guy Fawkes and issued doz-ens of fines totalling more than R10 000 forthe illegal discharge of fireworks.Mayoral Committee member for Safety
and Security JP Smith says purchasingfrom vendors who do not have the requiredpermits for the sale of fireworks is againstthe law.“It is illegal to discharge fireworks out-
side specific designated areas. It is also ille-gal to buy fireworks from traders withoutvalid police-issued permits,” he says.“Sadly, many Capetonians continue to
disregard the law and end up terrorisingtheir neighbours who have to put up withnoise. The law also matters very little tosome until there is an incident where some-one gets hurt, or worse. But this too doesn’tseem to be much of a deterrent.”On Guy Fawkes last year, the City re-
sponded to nearly 400 fireworks-relatedcomplaints and confiscated nearly 13 000fireworks.“Do the right thing and either take your
neighbours to task if they’re breaking thelaw or report the matter to the City or po-lice,” he urges.“To make matters worse, we also have to
police the growing mob culture associatedwith Guy Fawkes. Gangs of children runaroundwithpaint andother paraphernalia, terrorising their communities and usingthis ‘celebration’ to rob and hurt innocentpeople. This really is utter nonsense andneeds to stop.”Eight designated areas have been as-
signed for the discharging of fireworks.Visit the Swartklip Sports Complex in
Mitchell’s Plain, the Maidens Cove parkingarea in Camps Bay, Strandfontein Pavilion, the eastern side of the Athlone Stadiumparking area, the Bishop Lavis sports field,Wesfleur sports field inAtlantis, theMacas-sar Beach parking area or the beachfrontopposite the TourismCentre in Table View.Fireworks are only permitted to be sold
in sealed packages, as received from thesuppliers.Children under the age of 16 are not al-
lowed by law to purchase or discharge fire-works without adult supervision.Residents are reminded that anyone who
discharges shop-bought fireworks at thedesignated sites does so at their own risk. All approved, organised fireworks dis-
plays must be presented by licensed fire-works contractors who operate under theExplosives Act and the City’s CommunityFire Safety Bylaw.Fire safety inspectors and Law Enforce-
ment officers, together with the police’s Ex-plosives Unit, will conduct inspections atfireworks display sites to ensure that allsafety requirements are met.Phone the Metro Police call centre on
0860 POLICE (765 423).General emergencies can be directed via
the public emergency call centre on 107from a landline or (021) 480 7700 from a cell-phone.
Council reins in pests running wildIt’s pest season in the Mother City. The City of Cape Town reports it has re-
fined its rodent management strategy to ac-commodate the increase in rodents betweenSeptember and October and then again inMarch and April.Mayoral Committee member for Health
Benedicta van Minnen says council is pre-pared for baiting to begin.“CapeTown isnodifferent fromotherma-
jor cities around the world which all haveto deal with pests, especially in the contextofwaste generated byanovergrowingpopu-lation. Rats and other pests thrive in areaswhere they have a steady food supply, stormwater drainage systems andnopreda-tors,” she says.Environmental Health staff, assisted by
workers employed by the Expanded PublicWorks Programme, do rodent baitingacross the city and in the last year set up83 247 such rodent baiting stations.“Our staff go door-to-door to educate resi-
dents about effective waste managementand how to rodent-proof their homes. Ratswill congregate in areas that are conduciveto their survival, so it’s essential to keep ar-eas clean through the proper disposal ofwaste and tackling illegal dumping,” VanMinnen says.Where applicable, council institutes legal
action against people responsible for creat-ing conditions that encourage rodent breed-ing. Other measures include the appoint-ment of waste contractors, provision of ro-dent-proofwaste containers , ongoingwastemanagement education and regular inspec-tions of business premises to ensure that ef-fective rodent controlmanners are in place.Private property andbusiness owners are
also urged to ensure theirwaste is responsi-bly disposed of and to institute rodent con-trol measures. For any rodent-related matters visit your
nearest Environmental Health office orlodge complaints by calling 0860 103 089.

Church bids farewell to Uncle RobbieAfter taking special care of a Sil-vertown landmark, a dedicatedcaretaker is now at rest. The New Apostolic Church in
Durant Road recently bid fare-well to dedicated member Rob-ert Petersen.Uncle Robbie, as he was affec-
tionately known, was a retireddeacon and caretaker whoserved his church with pride. With the altar doubling as a
stage, special events like musi-cal concerts are regularly heldat the church. Uncle Robbie took his dutiesseriously, especially when church leaders ortourists visited the auditorium, says thechurch’s Arthur Minnaar.Uncle Robbie would see to it that the
church building was opened andclosed on time to allow those inattendance to be comfortablyseated for the duration of theservice or event, Minnaar re-calls.Uncle Robbie served as a dea-
con in the church until his retire-ment in August 2012, but stillvowed that hewould continue be-ing the caretaker until his death. On 29 September, he suffered a
stroke which led to him beingbedridden. His health deteriorat-
ed and he was hospitalised before he passedaway on Sunday 5 October.Church Rector Mervyn Van Wyk said he
was amazed by Uncle Robbie’s dedicationand his presence would be missed by all.

BELGRAVIA
Risky road rageTARRENLEE HABELGAARN
@LeeLaVidaLoca
Two people have died in less than twomonths on Lower Klipfontein Road. This despite desperate pleas from
Belgravia residents for traffic calmingmeasures to be installed. And after years of demands for safer
streets, locals say these deaths could havebeen avoided.A 10-ear-old boy was allegedly killed at a
pedestrian crossing last month.Less than two weeks later, a 23-year-old
cyclist was knocked down and died of hisinjuries.Belgravia Civic Association spokesper-
son Pat O’Conner insists homeowners havereached breaking point and have run out ofpatience while waiting for solutions.“We have had so many public meetings
and site visits with council to discuss themost dangerous roads in the neighbour-hood. Besides Lower Klipfontein Road, 3rdAvenue, 5th Avenue and Belgravia Roadhave been identified as high priority. Wehave been struggling to get traffic calmingmeasures implemented for more than fouryears,” he seethes.
“Lastmonthwemetwith the safety direc-torate who also promised to assist us afterthe fatalities. But nothing has happenedsince.”More road casualties can be avoided if
calls for traffic calming are heeded, resi-dent Randall Anderson believes.“Why must something bad first happen
before council listens? Rather tell us whatwe have realistically so that we can planand come up with alternative solutions tomake sure the children and residents of ourneighbourhood are safe,” he says. “Lying tous to keep us happy does not solve the prob-lem.We’re notmaking impossible demands– we are just asking for what we need.”Ward councillor Magadien Davids says
provision is being made for safety meas-ures in his 2015/2016 ward allocation budg-et. “We implemented six speed bumps andtwo raised intersections for Belgravia dur-ing the previous financial year. We have al-so done a complete safety evaluation of thearea and have identified the priority spots.Wewill be focusing on implementing raisedintersections, one way roads and speedbumps for the most dangerous roads.”V Starting with the word “Post”, SMS your thoughtsto 32516.

Your SMSes. The Athlone CID security is a joke. Theyare on their cellphones or chatting to eachother and are not aware of what’s happen-ing around them. There are entire roads un-patrolled in the CBD. There is no securityat the subway. There should be at least twoguards per street, one at either end.
. Athlone CID security is ineffective. There is no visible policing as shoppers arerobbed and intimidated.
. Gangsters are one problem and theschool children doing drugs openly inChurch Street, Findon Street and Hen-dricks Avenue is another. There are no pa-trol vehicles at all.
. How can the station commander of Ath-lone Police Station tell the drug dealerswhen they are coming to tackle the drugdealing problem in the media? The drugdealers are going to lie low for the week. This is how the police are doing their work.
. I’ve said it before: ever since any oldTom, Dick and Harry moved into the area, the Athlone CBD lost its status. I’m not rac-ist – only careful. Ex-Athlone CBD shopper
. I think the article on Athlone CBD isfar-fetched. Whoever gave this damning re-port has just done more harm to the CBDand tarnished the image of theAthlone CID.Yes, there is crime, but not to the extent thatgangsters are controlling the CBD. Some-one must do his homework before hespeaks. Reporters write what they are toldand cannot be held accountable for this re-port.
. Bicycle lanes inKlipfontein andBelgra-via roads is a total waste of taxpayers’ mon-ey andwill slow down traffic causing chaos.Spend the money on fixing our pavementsand broken roads, and put four-way stopsigns at every corner in Belgravia Estate.Ward councillor Magadien Davids shouldknow better. Fed-up ratepayer
. The new developments is great news. It’s long overdue. However, the communityneeds a canopy built to shield them from the
elements of the weather.. Now thatWilly’s Placewasn’t approved
for a liquor licence, why is it still open? Es-pecially with all the court appearances andthe last High Court order. Come on, City ofCape Town, close it down.
. Why is Willy’s Place still open?
. People who are complaining should geta life. How often does an event like this takeplace? If they can’t stand the noise of activi-ties taking place at the stadium, then movesomewhere else.

the Dr Abdurahman Community HealthCentre that they had not received their chron-ic medication and claimed they were told tocollect it fromanother facility.WhenPeople’sPost enquired about the allegations the pro-vincial health department confirmed pa-tients will be receiving chronic medication atother facilities in the interim. – News Ed.
. I am a patient at Dr Abdurahman DayHospital. I amconcerned thatwehave to col-lect our medication at the Hanover Park fa-cility. Whoever suggested that has no con-cern for patients who are very sick and old. Some may not even have taxi fare and willhave to walk. And as it already happens, peoplewait so long for theirmedication andhave to go back the next day again. I’m surethat will happen at Hanover Park, becausethe staff won’t be able to cope. They alreadymade other facilities available to dispensemedications in our area – the SilvertownClinic is one. They canmakemore availableor get mobile vans. Business mentors
– source of
experience and
inspiration for SMEs
Being an entrepreneur can be lonely, especially when you don’t
have an associate with whom you can discuss various aspects of
your business and its challenges.
Enter the business mentor – someone who can provide an
independent view and valuable advice when you really need it.
Mentors come in many forms, says Ravi Govender, Head of Small
Enterprises at Standard Bank. As recently seen on the ‘Think Big –
Building Business Champions’ TV series, they can be people close
to you – such as entrepreneurial parents who have helped nurture
your ambitions. This support can also be provided by respected friends who understand business, or this role can be
played by professional mentors, who specialise in assisting business owners in specific business sectors.
“Mentorship can make all the difference between being a businessperson with promise or a successful one. Whoever
your mentor is, their strengths should lie in their ability to provide considered views and opinions that can help you solve
business dilemmas as they occur.”
“Most of the finalists who competed for the ‘Think Big’ grand prize of a R1 million cash injection into their businesses
will acknowledge that it has been people outside their immediate businesses who inspired and advised them as they
journeyed along the road to success.”
A true mentor should have several important personal attributes and an open approach. Mr Govender advises that a
mentor should be prepared to:
• Share insights based on personal experience, and speak honestly about business mistakes they have made so that
you can avoid similar pitfalls.
• Allow you to benefit from their wide-ranging business knowledge.
• Provide you with a summary of the upside and downside of tough choices or deals you face.
• Invite you into business networks they belong to so you can benefit by associating with people who could help build
your business.
• Review with you what is happening within the business and how these events can help you focus on priorities.
• Not only advise you, but also motivate you to achieve your goals.
• Question you and test your ideas, so that you see your business differently and open your mind to new concepts.
• Give you constructive feedback where it is required.
• Assist you with strengthening your relationships with employees and introducing tools and techniques to ensure that
key staff is retained by the business.
• Help you identify people with skills that can be developed for the benefit of the business.
“Important to note, is that finding a mentor isn’t as easy as picking up the phone. But there are several ways of finding
someone suitable,” says Mr Govender.
Some things to consider are:
• Finding someone who has been successful in a similar field, but may no longer be actively involved in business.
Retired entrepreneurs will often take on a mentorship role simply to keep themselves occupied.
• Joining local business organisations. By attending functions, you could locate someone suitable.
• Ask people in your network to suggest someone suitable for the role.
• Target a businessperson whom you respect and admire, and simply ask them if they would be prepared to mentor you.
• Use the Internet to locate organisations that specialise in providing mentors for small businesses. This will ensure that
the mentor you eventually select will be experienced in a particular sector.
“There is no doubt that a mentor can provide valuable insights and support for businesspeople needing a sounding
board to help them maximise available opportunities and realise the full potential of their businesses.”
“Regardless of where or how you find a mentor, the key thing to remember is that he or she should be a friend who will
provide independent, unbiased support and guidance. Find a mentor who becomes a friend, and you and your business
will reap massive rewards,” says Mr Govender.

Festivalextendsits runAfter Bridgetown Thea-
tre Company’s (BTC)recent successful stag-
ing of its first free NantesPark Summer Concert inSeptember, it has been an-nounced that the monthlyfestival will continue untilMarch.More than 3 000 people at-
tended the inaugural eventwhich included performanc-es by various singers, danc-ers and comedians. The next concertwill be on
Sunday 26 October from13:00 until 18:30 and will con-tinue to take place every lastSunday of the month untilMarch.BTC director Theo Davids
says the positive responsefrom the community towardthe initiative has been over-whelming.“Most people have told us
that an event like this hasbeen long overdue. The mu-tual feeling is that for toolong communities have beengripped and paralysed by anepidemic called fear ofcrime. It will take events likethis to bring communities to-gether and make us realisethat we have a common goalto uphold the peace in our ar-eas,” Davids says.
“The most heart wrench-ing comment we heard wasfrom an elderly lady whoshared with us her story ofcaring for six of her grand-children. With her measlypension she can’t afford totake them to established the-atres and shows in other are-as. So with the staging of theNantes Park Summer Con-cert she was thankful thather grandchildren can expe-rience andwitness the amaz-ing talents right on theirdoorstep.”Davids says as organisers
they are eternally gratefulfor the artists who offer uptheir time to bringhappinessto the enthusiastic crowd. The line-up for the concert
onSunday 26Octoberwill in-clude performances by GregBrown’s Tri-angle old schoolband, the Crazy Hip HopCrew, Lady D, Riley-Ray fea-turing Shafieka Pillay, theMerv Parker band and theEmile Petersen street danc-ers.A special appearance will

Health, the festival will be heldin Muizenberg on Saturday 1and Sunday 2 November.People’s Post is the print me-

go to the best Swaeltjie kites. These are traditional swallow
or bat shaped kites, hand-craft-ed and locally made using bam-boo, paper or material. The design originated in
South-East Asia and came toAf-rica hundreds of years ago.
The age-old techniques ofmaking and flying the kites arebeing shared with a wider audi-ence thanks to a collaborationbetween Cape Mental Healthand master kite-maker Ebra-him Sambo from Athlone.Sambo has been making
Swaeltjie kites since childhood.“My great-grandfather was a
slave from Indonesia. He taughtmy grandfather, who taughtmyfather, who taughtme,” he says.Sambo is passionate about
keeping this historic kiting tra-dition alive. For the past two years he has
voluntarily run daily Swaeltjiekite-making workshops at the
festival. He’s alsomade sure theskills are passed on in his ownfamily – two years ago his sonRifead won the Heritage KiteAward.“The Swaeltjie could be the
oldest kite in Africa,” says kiterGreg Mountjoy.“It was thought that Africa is
the only continent without ahistory of kiting, but these swal-low kites have been made andflown here for centuries.”There are great prizes up for
grabs in the competition, aswell as the opportunity for localkiters to rub shoulders with thebest kiters from across theglobe.Prizes include the People’s

Ajax Cape Town will look to return totheir winning ways when they hostPlatinum Stars in a PSL clash at Cape
Town Stadium tomorrow (Wednesday 22October).The Cape side suffered their second de-
feat in the top tier of South African footballwhen they were beaten 0-1 by visitors Kaiz-er Chiefs on Sunday. Tefu Mashamaite’s50thminute goal hampered the hopes of theUrban Warriors to remain in second placeon the log.Roger da Sá’s troops, who announced
Huawei as its official shirt sponsor for theseason on Friday 17 October, have droppedthree places to fifth on the table and are oneof four teams on 14 points. However, they can gain points on Ama-
khosi (first on 24 points), Orlando Pirates(second; 14), Wits (third; 14) and Sundowns(fourth; 14) should they defeat Stars tomor-row. But the Capetonians’ track recordagainst the men from Mafikeng over thelast two seasons puts the visitors ahead. The last time Ajax were victors over Starswas in August 2012, when they won 4-1 at
Athlone Stadium.Their last three matches against Allan
Freese’s charges saw them suffer a 3-0 de-feat in May; 0-2 loss in December last year;and a 3-0 loss in February last year.Meanwhile, Cape Town football fans will
be in for a treat as the city hosts twoNation-al First Division derbies this weekend.Ninth-placed Santos FC will host strag-
glers Cape TownAll Stars at Athlone Stadi-um on Friday evening, while Vasco daGama FC will face FC Cape Town at ParowPark on Saturday.Santos suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands
of Jomo Cosmos at the weekend and AllStars thumped 0-3 byThandaRoyal ZuluFCat Athlone Stadium at the weekend.Vascowill look to continue theirwinning
ways after they defeated Milano United 1-2at Philippi Stadium last Friday. But thefourth-placed side will face an uphill battlewhen they take on second-placed FC CapeTown at Parow Park.Milano United have dropped from first to
third place after their loss to Vasco.ButTheKinneswill have the opportunity
to regain their place when they travel toPhuthaditjhaba to take on Maluti FET Col-lege on Saturday.
