A SAFE haven is continuing to provideasylum for women in need, even thoughthey face major financial constraints.
The Ihâta Shelter for Abused Women, based in Heideveld, serves as a sanctuary forwomen affected by domestic violence as wellas those who want to kick their drug addic-tion.
More importantly, the non-profit organisa-tion allows these women to have their chil-dren with them every step of the way.
Although the shelter survives on public do-nations and by selling second-hand itemsfrom a community shop, they are facing direfinancial ruin.
The shelter, situated at the corner of Fifth
and Yusuf streets, is rented from the Depart-ment of Public Works.
The shelter’s director, Nuraan Osman, saysat the moment they are trying to negotiate alease to pay less rent.
“We are facing major rental arrears,” shesays.
“Our rent is R4 600 per month and we arenot able to meet it. We would like to pay some-thing we can afford especially consideringthat we do not receive government funding.”
Osman says it would be unfortunate if theshelter had to close as it provides help for“broken women” and also tends to the well-being of their children.
“Women are given space and time to plantheir lives forward,” she says.
“This is done through services geared to-wards empowerment, improved self-respect,
independence and recovery, ending with suc-cessful community re-integration.”
Offering accommodation for up to sixmonths, the shelter works closely with the re-habilitation centre, Sultan Bahu.
Osman explains that addicted mothers aresent to the centre as outpatients for six weeks.
She also points out that the children’s inter-ests are a major priority.
“If we see that a mother is unable to provideproper care for her child, we work with agen-cies such as the Department of Social Devel-opment to find alternative solutions,” shesays.
An abused woman who has been living atIhâta for the past two weeks has described herstay as “uplifting”.
She says the staff are helpful in assistingher with her two children.
“The first thing I read in the reception areawhen I arrived was a sign on the wall whichstated ‘A time to heal’ and that’s when I knewthis was the right place for me,” she says.
She also points out that they have been re-ceptive to her even though she is a Christianand they are a Muslim-based organisation.
“I believe healing starts from the inside. Here you are given the space you need to heal, but at the same time they monitor you tomake sure that everything is on board,” shesays.
Osman says they are in need of people tovolunteer their time or services.
“We require volunteers to teach their skillswhether it be sewing, yoga, dancing, art oranything else,” she says.
“We do not want to see anyone turned awaybecause we cannot accommodate them.”

TWIN photographers from Athlone havejourneyed far and wide to capture their expe-riences and bring it home neatly packaged inan exhibition for our viewing pleasure.
The 27-year-old Essop twins, Hasan and Hu-sain, are celebrating their second joint soloexhibition, Remembrance, at the GoodmanGallery in Woodstock until Saturday 15 Sep-tember.
The brothers, who grew up in Rylands, have spent the last two years travelling toMecca, Jerusalem, Amsterdam, Hamburgand Senegal to produce over 200 photographs.
Husain says this new body of work was cre-ated using a new technique in which imageswere captured in full 360 degrees as well as180 degrees vertical.
Husain says the viewer sees everything thephotographer sees besides his feet.
“After our last body of work I told my broth-er I wanted to photograph everything,” saysHusain.
“We researched whether this was possibleand found out that it was,” he says.
He says the new technique they were usingrequired special equipment which theybought with prize money from photographycompetitions.
He points out that it took them two yearsto perfect the technique.
“We’ve had a good response to the exhibi-tion. On Saturday a panel discussion tookplace with three professors discussing ourwork,” he says.
The exhibition is open to the public at thegallery situated at 176 Sir Lowry Road, thirdfloor Fairweather House, Woodstock.
Entry is free. For more information visit www.essopt-

FRUITS OF LABOUR: After vast travelsaround the world, the twins’ work isfinally available to art lovers.
Dear reader,
At my rather matureage, I had my first realexperience of “ladies’night”.
I was actually after thegoodie bag an upmarketestablishment tantalisedwith in their invitationpromising a “wonderfulparty to end Women’sMonth”.
My friend was up forthe challenge, but disap-pointingly, we did not getgoodie bags because we had not re-served.
What we got – and hadn’t reserved ei-ther – was enough half naked, muscu-lar men serving us delicate snacks. Ourwish was their command.
The mix of women were mainlyyoung, some older.
When my friend asked me whetherthis was “for desperate women”, Ibounced the question off one of the top-less lads who retaliated: “No, it’s forwomen who want something”.
Well, count me out. I wasn’t there foranything other than a new experienceand a few fun hours in a classy placewith a good friend. In any event, I havesomething at home (my husband, whoknew my whereabouts).
Venturing on, we were treated to nodrinks, as the freebie drinks were alco-holic, no snacks as we’d filled up earli-er on a tasteless beef wrap at a Turkishcafe, and no entertainment as the mu-sic and fashion show were not to ourtaste.
The fashion show seemed to drag onand was followed by a make-up lesson. In fairness, my friend and I were listen-ing to all this from comfy couches farfrom the action.
We opted to not see the fashion and
make up demo by a guywhom we explicitlyheard saying that weshould apply foundationto our lips as well, “tobring it all together”.
Useful tip – in fact souseful it stopped us tak-ing photos of ourselves,er, ourselves with thehunky eye candy.
Within seconds of post-ing these pictures on Fa-cebook, I had 12 likes, ofwhich 11 were female.
Two hours later, wewere bored and all the gorgeous guysin the world couldn’t persuade us oth-erwise – until I found a novel use forone.
Declining his offer of “somethingfrom the bar”, I tasked him with goingin search of a hot chocolate, telling himit was close to my bedtime and I neededa hot beverage before I left. The cutiedelivered.
After agreeing to some passive smok-ing on the roof deck with my smokerfriend, we left for home, only to findthat my car had been locked in at theparking area I’d chosen for safety rea-sons.
The security guard had gone on hisrounds and we had no choice but towait for him; enough time for an oppor-tunistic little man to approach us withintent of snatching our bags. He did notsucceed.
What I learnt from my “ladies’ night”out is that it’s better to always take aman along.

A NEW reading hub will hit the roadsnext year. A R1.6 million mobile li-brary bus will replace the oldest buscurrently in service. People who livefar from libraries will benefit from thenew convenience.Tandeka Gqada, the Mayoral Com-
mitteemember for Community Servic-es, says the mobile library bus fleetconsists of three buses. “These busesprovide an essential service to commu-nities where accessibility to the near-est library is difficult,” she says.Gqadabelieves investing in children
through education, ofwhich reading is
a central part, is essential.Meanwhile, the revamp of the
Nantes Park is on track to be completeby April next year. Gqada says the up-grade involves a major overhaul of thecurrent facilities. “Anauditoriumanda skate park are earmarked for thepark, as well as the construction of toi-lets, a formal parking area, a teahouse,an extended play area and designatedspace for security services. Pathwayswill be constructed, which connect themain gates of the park, as well as theinstallation of fencing and lightingthroughout the area. ”

This is the final decision made by the Cityof Cape Town’s Naming Committee at a coun-cil meeting last week. The City had originally identified 27 pro-
posed name changes six years ago. Severalprocesses and meetings led to the final deci-sion.
The process was marred with several hic-cups, most notably the proposal to have Van-guard Drive changed to Dullah Omar Drive(“Where the streets have new names”, Peo-ple’s Post, 24 July).ButAthlone residents and theOmar family
were not in favour of this change. They calledfor Jan Smuts Drive to be changed to DullahOmar Drive. Both the Smuts and Omar fami-lies have been consulted, but, in the end, it
was decided the road will remain Jan SmutsDrive.Following a public participation process,
which saw 19 000 residents voice their opin-ions, a total of six streets and two civic cen-tres will be renamed.Brett Herron, the chairperson of the com-
mittee, says: “Understandably this process, more often than not, elicits a deeply emotion-al response and throughout the process wehave tried to hold ourselves to a standard ofobjectivity, extensive and comprehensivepublic consultation, transparency and acutesensitivity.“This was not always easy as those of us
who have fronted this work, especially atsome of the public hearings, have had to en-dure some of the crudest responses whichwere often rooted in deep-seated prejudiceand a lack of generosity of spirit that has noplace in our democracy.”The most significant change is the renam-
ing of portions of Lansdowne Road. The section from Wetton to Turfhall roads
will remain Lansdowne Road, while the sec-tion from Turfhall to Palmyra roads will berenamed Imam Haron Road. The segment from Wetton to Swartklip
roads will be known as Govan Mbeki Roadand the stretch of road from Swartklip Roadto Baden Powell Drive will become JeffMasemola Road.Other name changes are:. Athlone Civic Centre to Dulcie Septem-
ber Civic Centre;. Modderdam Road to Robert Sobukwe
Road;. Wittebome Civic Centre toWynberg Civ-
ic Centre;. the unnamed footbridge between Langa
and Bonteheuwel becomes Bonte-Langa foot-bridge;
. Coen Steytler Avenue to Walter SisuluAvenue;
. NY1 to Steve Biko Drive;
. Harrier Street (Parklands) to Blue CraneStreet;

THE legacy of one of the city’s top nightspotswill berememberedwhenmusic lov-ers host a tribute to the legendary ClubMontreal.
Made famous in the tune composed by thelate Tony Schilder, this night spot – which
was based inManenberg –was a venuewherethe cream of the Cape’s social circle gatheredto enjoy some of the top talents in the countryfrom the 1970s through to the ’90s.
On Sunday 9 September, Zouke Lounge inKensington will host an afternoon of enter-tainment paying tribute to the music of thatera with Remembering Club Montreal: a Ret-rospective of the Music and Times.
One of the organisersof the event is Stan “TheJazzman” Davids, whoused to be the DJ at thevenue for many years.
Now living in Mitch-ell’s Plain, Davids re-calls how the venueplayed a big role in em-powering many of theyouth of that timethrough music.
“From a personal per-spective, this placeplayed a big part in merealisingmy positive po-tential for my life,” hesays confidently.
“While the music thatcame to us was impor-tant, the bigger inspira-tion was meeting themusic lovers who gath-ered there. Almost all ofthem have becomefriends for life.
“This was also where Igot my big break as a DJwhen the last owner, thelate Bernie van Oordt, gave me the chance tospin some discs betweenthe live music. I’ve nev-er looked back since”
Van Oordt was well-known in Bonteheuwelas the owner of Van-guard Motor Spareswhere his door was al-ways open to musiciansat the time.
“If you went to theshop at any time therewould always be some musician needing tohave something fixed on their cars,” contin-ued Davids. “Bernie would never refusethem. In his ownway he alsomentoredmanyof the youth in the area through exposingthem to the music, giving them work at theclub, but always encouraging them to puttheir education first.
“This is the spirit of togetherness peoplewant to celebrate at this event, and it is some-thing many people have been asking for overanumber of years. It is going to be aboutmorethan the music; it is going to be a gatheringof ’family’.”
Davids has managed to get together mostof the members of Out of Town – one of the
last bands to play there – to provide the mu-sic.
They are Camillo Lombard on keyboards,Tich Jean-Pierre on guitar and vocals, Den-ver Furness on drums, and Grant Sebastianon bass.
Another highlight is that vocalist LeslieKleinsmith will be in town and be a specialguest at the event. He is currently performingon cruise ships in the Mediterranean.
Zouke Lounge is in Bunney Street, Ken-sington, and doors will open at 12:00.
Admission is R50 with tickets available atthe door.

The unknown man has been operatingin Bridgetown and Silvertown, using alist which he claims is to collect funds forthe Eoan Group. He is collecting donations from trust-

a man was moving around with a list ofneeds of the school,” says Rajap.“We don’t send people to collect money
for the Eoan Group and we never have.”Rajap points out this is not the first
such incident. He says more than a year ago a woman
claimed to be collecting donations for theEoan Group.“Someone fromabusiness inGatesville
phoned us and said they were interestedin giving us a donation. I was confusedbecause I didn’t know what they weretalking about. They then explained to methat awomanhadbeen there the previousweek with a document with the needs ofthe Eoan Group listed on it.”Rajap says the woman was never
caught.“This scam is putting us in a bad light,”
he says.“Wedon’twant to take from the less for-

DISRESPECTFUL:DISRESPECTFUL: Luqmaan Timmbelieves art-ists should be sensitive. “Respect needs to beshown. Even if one does not like him, he is stillour president and he needs to be respectedfor that.”
ANAN INSULINSULT:T: Lunelle Davids says the paintingis a clear insult to the president. “The artistis making fun of our president and that iswrong, especially when the artist draws hisprivate parts.”
VIOLAVIOLATION:TION: Khuthala Ndolondolo says Zuma’srights are being violated. “He is the father ofthe nation and should be respected no matterwhat. We are not supposed to see his privateparts; only he must see them.”
NOTNOT FUNNY:FUNNY: Clint Williams believes the artistis wrong. “That is our president and thesepaintings are morally wrong. Some may thinkit is funny, but I don’t because it is a sign ofdisrespect.”
THREE months after a controversialpainting of president Jacob Zuma by art-ist Brett Murray, a new painting has sur-
faced. Cape Townartist AyandaMabulu’s paint-ing depicts a well-endowed Zumadancing in tradi-tional Zulu cos-tume. People’s Postreaders sharedtheir views of thenew artwork withinterns Tarren-Lee Habelgaarnand Luzuko Zini.
But isit art?
NOT ANOT A GOODGOOD IDEA:IDEA: Kingston Nhlapho says itis not acceptable that such paintings aremadepublic. “He is our president and also a fatherto his children. Paintings like these will not on-ly hurt him, but his family, too.”
NOT ANOT ACCEPTCCEPTABLE:ABLE: Allan Africa says peopleneed to respect our leaders. “Each person isentitled to a certain amount of privacy and re-spect, and those have been violated withthese paintings.”
HUMILIAHUMILIATING:TING: Vanessa Brink says peopleshould keep their opinions to themselves.“This is very disturbing. Even if the artistdoesn’t like him they should respect Zuma in-stead of humiliating him and his family.”
COUPLES or individuals who are certainthey do not want more children can con-sider sterilisation as an option.Sterilisation – for either the man or the
woman – is a quick and a safe procedurewithout long-term health effects which isavailable free at many State health servic-es.Sterilisation is a surgical procedure
which should be regarded as permanentand irreversible as there is no guaranteeit can be reversed.Neithermale nor female sterilisation af-
fects desire or sexual function as hormoneproduction is unaffected.Without thewor-ry of pregnancy some couples find the de-sire for sexual expression becomes morespontaneous and more frequent.Female sterilisation is usually done un-
der general anaesthetic and the fallopiantubes are closed by the application of ringsor clips. It offers immediate, highly effec-
tive protection against pregnancy. It is cost-effective in the long term with
noneof thepotential healthproblemsasso-ciated with some temporary methods. Awomanwhohasundergone sterilisation isspared the common worries such as side-effects, supply problems, forgetfulness, partner compliance and the inconven-ience of frequent clinic visits.Female sterilisation may be done
straight after giving birth which elimi-nates the need for a separate visit to thehealth facility.Vasectomy is the single most effective
method of contraception available and al-lows theman to take responsibility forpre-venting pregnancy.Contact your nearest clinic or the Asso-
ciation for Voluntary Sterilisation ofSouth Africa on (021) 531 1665 or [email protected]. Alternatively visitwww.avssa.org.za.

VAGRANTS living under Krom-boom bridge are a nightmare forthose living nearby.
Rondebosch East residents saythe vagrants must go as they are fedup with having to deal with drunkpeople strewn across their side-walk.
The Civic Association of Ronde-bosch East (Care) unpacked thematter at a recent meeting.
The association’s vice chairper-son, Tracey Schouw, says she hashad a meeting with ward councillor AntheaGreen to address the matter but nothing hascome of it.
“It hadbeendecidedat themeeting that thebridge would be repainted, the walkways un-der the bridge which the vagrants use tosleep in would be closed and the subwaysalong the railway line which squatters useas a toilet would be closed. This is yet to hap-pen,” Schouw says.
She suspects squatters are livingunder thebridge because of the close proximity to thelocal bottle store.
Insufficient light around this area was alsodiscussed at the meeting.
A 28-year-old mother of two, who lives inSt Kilda Road just off Bridge Way, says streetlights in the road are also often on during theday and off at night. “I live a stone’s throwfrom Kromboom Bridge where the vagrantslive. It’s a safety risk for these lights to beoff at night,” she adds.
WhenPeople’s Postvisited the bridge at theweekend, drunkvagrants couldbe seen fight-ing each other and making a noise.
Shopkeepers at the new complex oppositethe bridge say customers are deterred from
frequenting their shops due to the many va-grants living on the side of the road opposite.
Amin Sulaiman, one of the owners of thenew complex, says: “Customers are even tooafraid topark their cars at thebridgebecauseof the noisy vagrants who often get violentwhen drunk.”
Green says painting the bridge and closingthe walkways are on the cards for this finan-cial year. “When exactly it will happen I amnot sure,” she says
Green says when offered support and theopportunity to be taken to a shelter, the va-grants refuse.
A vagrant, who spoke to People’s Post onconditionof anonymity, sayshehasnowhereelse to go as he was chucked out of his homeby his family due to his drinking habits.
Green says the fact that the vagrants livein such close proximity to a bottle store onlyexacerbates the problem.
“It is not the root of the problem, but doesmake it worse as the liquor store sells reallycheap wine which the vagrants buy. But I amsure even if they stopped selling the cheapwine the vagrants would find a way to buythe more expensive kind,” she adds.

ADVERTORIAL: Stodels Nurseries, one of the leading nursery groups inthe Cape Peninsula, will give awaymore than 5 000 trees to gardeners inexchange for bags of old newspapersonFriday to celebrateNationalArborWeek.
The project was launched by StodelsNurseries in 1983 and has proved a hugesuccess – a total of 150 000 treeshavebeengiven away over the past 25 years.
The annual campaign aims to creategreater awareness among individualsabout their contribution to global warm-ing (their carbon footprint) and to en-courage them to take steps to off-set thisdamage.
Stodels Nurseries Managing DirectorNick Stodel says: “We have always beencommitted to the environment. Thisproject not only means that more than5 000 new trees will be planted, but ourcountry’s natural resources will be pre-served through the recycling of papercontributions.
“This is an ideal opportunity for peo-ple to plant a tree and help off-set the ef-fects of global warming.”
Global warming is something we can’tafford to ignore. Climate change expertshave unanimously named Africa as thecontinent that will suffer worst from theeffects of global warming.
Even more worrying for us in SouthAfrica is that the southern-most tip ofAf-
rica will be most dramatically impacted. The Western Cape’s plant kingdoms, wine farms, fish stocks and low-lyingcoastal areas are all at risk from risingsea levels caused bymelting ice caps andglaciers, especially since we are situatedat the point where the Atlantic and Indi-an oceans meet.
In addition, the United Nations’ Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Changewarned that in sub-Saharan Africa, be-tween 25% and 40% of animals in nation-al parks may become endangered.
Fortunately, there is a solution. On av-erage, one tree can absorb a ton of carbondioxide over its lifetime.
“So by planting an indigenous treeyou’ll be decreasing your carbon foot-
print and you’ll be helping to protect theenvironment for future generations,”says Stodel.
Want to claim your free, indigenoustree?
It’s simple: just take a bag of newspa-pers to your closest Stodels Garden Cen-tre.
Make sure you get there soon, as theoffer is only available while stocks last.

New heritageWITHHeritageDayonMonday24September,the decision to rename some Cape Townstreets has been made in good time. The street renaming debate will continue
unabated. This is an emotional issue. There will al-
ways be detractors. Some may breathe a sigh of relief at the re-
naming of Hendrik Verwoerd Drive to UysKrige Drive and the offensively-named Na-tive Yard (NY1), whichwill be renamed SteveBiko Drive. The street renaming should be perceived as
anattempt at redressing part of this country’spainful past – and, hopefully, to leave it bur-ied.But Heritage Day has itself been unofficial-
ly rebranded National Braai Day.This in itself speaks of a lack of sentiment
towards our national heritage. And it may not be such a bad thing.Ask most locals if they know the people
who, until now, have had streets named forthem. Most won’t know who Hendrik Verwoerd
was. Or Coen Steytler.Fast forward to two decades from now and
who will remember Walter Sisulu or RobertSobukwe?Admittedly, many will remember Nelson
Mandela, but as for the rest?Contemporary history will give most of
these political icons a line in the annals of ourhistory books.By comparison, ask any tourist what they
love about Cape Town and they will say it isthe friendly people, the natural beauty of thecity, the different cultures, fine food andwine. These are reasons enough to draw foreign-
ers to our country.A braai on a Monday? Why not? Celebrat-
ing Heritage Day with friends and family isperhaps a suitable heritage. One that is worth building on.
I ATTENDED the meeting of a neighbourhoodwatch on Wednesday 29 August at the SilverLeaPrimarySchool, but so fewpeople attended. Why did you not come? Our homes in Silvertown are kept safe by the
neighbourhood watch while we sleep. And why can’t they get paid?(Councillor) Suzette Little’s personal assist-
ant spoke of upgrades to our area, but avoidedto address current problems. If the Council has money for upgrades such
as a Killarney Racetrack, why not use moneyto pay our neighbourhood watch officials? They perform an excellent service to keep us
safe in our homes day and night. Why not utilise our City money to sponsor
our citizens who sacrifice their lives for free tokeep us safe.Show theworkers appreciation for their serv-
ices by allocating money to pay them.PIERRENE MALANDERSilvertown

I GREW up among gangsters in District Sixin the early ’50s.I’ve always heard about this numbers
gang in the Cape.I’m almost 60 and these gangs are still
around.While watching TV documentaries about
substance abuse and criminal activities – inand out of jail – one cannot help to wonderwhat our criminal justice system is doing. Many of these young adults come from
good homes and are jailed for petty crimeslike drug abuse leading to kleptomania, house break-ins and theft.More than likely these youngsters are
not violent and 90% of them are evictedfrom their parental homes after numerousattempts of help having been offered tothem. There is only so much a parent can take
before having a nervous breakdown. While they serve their sentence, they are
threatened and abused or forced to joingangs to survive. This strengthens their numbers and
gives protection to ring leaders. After serving their sentences, they are
worse off. With their criminal record, they don’t
standa chance of applying for a low-paid jobas companies do criminal checks on em-ployees.That’s where the cycle starts again. These young lads are so depressed and go
back to their old habits.Except for a few who make it, there is re-
ally no end to this cycle. Is Correctional Services doing enough to
rehabilitate these youngsters?Constitutionally, all prisoners have hu-
manitarian rights. The Correctional Services should infil-
trate these number gangs by starting toweed out corrupt prison officials. They can’t tellme theydon’t knowwhat’s
happening in their jails. The news media know – which makes it
even worse – and Correctional Services isnot doing anything about it.I know their lives are threatened, but
they have taken an oath to uphold the law.Gangsters are not born, but created. This system allows them to be part of the
numbers gang.If you do the crime, you do the time.Magistrates should consider if jail time is
really punitive or rehabilitative. They should consider sentences to reha-
bilitation rather than prison.ARTHUR PILLAY

I AM heartened at the collective stance anddisplay of spiritual unity by the 2012 ReligiousLeaders Anti-Corruption Summit in CapeTown. It is indicative that, where the politi-cians have failed us, people who can be lik-ened to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutuhave heeded the call to fight corruption. It was the stoic clergyman Tutuwho headed
the post-apartheid Truth and ReconciliationCommission, and diffused amyriad of conflictsituations where political leadership hasfailed.Hence, all God-fearing citizens must give
their unanimous support of the ReligiousLeaders Anti-Corruption Summit proposals, and give credence to the lone voices of coura-geous individuals such as businessman HughGlenister and activist Terry Crawford-Brown,who have consistently fought against corrup-tion.
(Fighting) the scourge of corruption re-mains the responsibility of each law abidingcitizen.Offering a bribe to a corrupt law enforce-
ment official, “stealing” of your employers’time or failing to report a crime are the basicprinciples we must inculcate into our mind-sets.The Bible puts it succinctly in Proverbs:
“Teach children how they should live, andthey will remember it all their lives.” The ad-age of honesty being the best policy still holdsmuch impetus. My prayer is that the religious leaders of SA
takeup the task to bring discernment, wisdomand peace against the violent aftermath of theMarikana mine tragedy, because the politi-cians have resorted to playing the blamegame.MARK KLEINSCHMIDT

AFTER the recent bad press about schoolbooks, I am prompted to ask: Why does onehave to go through a veritable wringer to geta child admitted to high school?I went through the trauma of having to ap-
ply for my son to attend high school nextyear. This was an absolute nightmare! I have
two grown daughters and I sent them off fortheir first dayat high schoolwith their appli-cation forms and that was that. What a palaver to get my son into a high
school! He’s my “laatlammetjie” and I have been
out of the school business for a long time.I live in the southern suburbs and my
blood boiled on numerous occasions.Firstly there are the application forms
which need to be completed.I swear they are more like a short epistle.
You have to attach your life history. Then you’re expected to have all the docu-
ments certified and make an appointmentfor an interview. This is just an application to attend a par-
ticular high school. Then you need to pay a non-refundable
“processing fee”.Now, if a school received about 200 appli-
cations and they all charge at least R200 foreach application, they would collect R40 000.If they took only 100 pupils, they would netR20 000 profit.I was extremely disillusioned and had giv-
en up hope of finding a school with the rightattitude and approach to education, one thatmatched my own expectations and my son’sintelligence. My son is in the top third of his grade and
I felt he would need a school that looked at
his high achievements and nurtured them, while encouraging him to work hard on theaspects he may be lacking in. This was mylast attempt at finding the right fit but whata pleasure it was to walk into this school ontheir open day!As theprincipalmadehiswelcomespeech,
my son whispered to me “Mom, this is theschool I want to come to”.That sealed it for me.Needless to say, this was my first choice
as well. What an almighty difference between this
one and all the others I had been to!What are the criteria for admitting pupils?
Do the principals really have carte blancheto do as they please and accept whom theyplease?I am aware they have to take children
from the immediate area, but how is it thatsome pupils are in schools that are very faraway from home?Do academic results play a part? Can the education department do any-
thing about the flagrant disregard someteachers have towards prospective stu-dents?What is it with (some) principals? They
seem to be vying with each other for the bestof everything. They seem to want to take only the aca-
demically sound students because theywanttheir school to be “the best”.Doesn’t the average pupil deserve the best
education their parents can provide forthem? Most geniuses were average students but
excelled anyway.ANONYMOUSLetter shortened. – Ed

THE SAFETY of pupils and teachers re-mains a toppriority for the provincial edu-cation department.
The department’s Safe Schools centre hasreceived almost 10 000 calls, with 1 727 requir-ing further assistance and support.Just less than a third of these were reports
on burglary and vandalism, 292 on crime-re-lated incidents, 255 on abuse such as bullying, and 219 for counselling and psychological sup-port.This is a slight drop from the 12 267 calls re-
ceived in 2011, 3 235 of which required furtherassistance.Provincial education minister Donald
Grant says there are various contact centreswhich schools, teachers and pupils can use toreport crime and abuse. He further encouraged people to make use
of the contact centres when necessary.“The Safe Schools Call Centre can be
reached at toll-free number 0800 45 46 47, andprovides immediate, free, online communica-tion to learners, parents and teachers needinghelp, guidance or information regarding edu-cation-related safety issues,” Grant says.Grant says police officers are also called in
when necessary.“During an incident of gang violence and/or
trespassing, the call centre will ensure thatthe relevant authorities are alerted to dealwith gang intimidation and threats, gang
shootings and gang killings in and around theschool,” Grant adds.In the event of any traumatic incidents such
as suicides, hijackings, missing persons andthe discovery of weapons or drugs on theschool premises, the call centre will providethe victims and their family with immediateassistance. The call centre is open from Monday to Fri-
day, 07:00 to 16:00, and is situated at the depart-ment’s Head Office at Grand Central Towersin Lower Parliament Street.
School safety a priorityA TOTAL of 30 bursaries are being of-fered to deaf or hearing impaired stu-dents.The bursaries are for candidates want-
ing to be trained as laminators to workin the plastics industry – from boat build-ing to swimming pool construction andcanopy construction.Plastics SA and training partners
Whisper Boat Building Academy (WB-BA) and theMarine IndustryAssociationof SA are inviting deaf students to applyfor bursaries funded by the Manufactur-ing, Engineering and Related ServicesEducation and Training Authority (mer-SETA). The bursaries will allow them totrain in the art of working with compos-ites from this month to December.Plastics SA regional training manager
JoFitzell says thiswill be the third intakeof students who are deaf or hard of hear-ing. “There is a tremendous shortage ofskilled labour in the Western Cape boatbuilding industry and the deaf studentswho graduate from this course offer awelcome relief and a sought-after skillthat allows them to work in a variety offields in the plastics industry,” Fitzellsays.Peter Jacops founded theWBBA in 2004
as a non-profit organisation to teach deafstudents from the townships the art ofboat building.“Research has shown that 40% of
young South Africans between the agesof 16 and 25 are unemployed and do notgo to school,” says Jacops.
“Disabled youngsters have an even big-ger problem and face even greater obsta-cles as there are not many opportunitiesor job facilities that cater for their specif-ic needs.”Training takes place with the help of a
full-time sign language interpreter andconsists of classroom-based theoreticaltraining at thePlastics SAoffices inMait-land, combined with practical workplaceexperience, presented as individualskills programmes, offered at the newWBBA facilities in Epping Industria.“Since the first training course for deaf
students was launched as a pilot projecta year ago, more than 20 students havegraduated with a certificate of compe-tence in lamination,” Fitzell says. “Thesestudents are now able to provide forthemselves and their families an honestincome and are equipped with qualifica-tions, skills and a tradewhich are in highdemand and crucial to the economy.”MerSETA has also committed to fund
the full tuition of students who will be re-cruited and selected by Plastics SA.The opportunity is open to men and
women students who are 18 or older, deafor hearing impaired, but able to speaksign language. Successful candidatesmust have a valid SA identity document,be willing to learn, enjoy working withtheir hands and be willing to commit tofull-time studying. For more information, SMS

Teacher to raiseR1m for charityLIAM MOSES
A MITCHELL’S PLAIN teacherhas set himself the target of rais-ing R1 million for schools andcharities by running theChicagoMarathon in October this year.
Irafaan Abrahams, a teacher atRocklands High School, is alreadywell known across Cape Town forhis communitywork, having raisedover R250 000 in a similar projectlast year where he ran the NewYork Marathon.
This year 10 different schools andtwo cancer charities will be the re-cipients of any money raised.
Abrahams says that he chose tomake cancer charities and cancereducation a major part of thisyear’s programme because of hispersonal experience with the dis-ease. “The main point of this year’sproject is to raise awareness aboutcancer and spread of cancer. That’swhy the two beneficiaries this yearare amaBele Belles and Cancer-vive,” says Abrahams.
“It’s a big personal push also be-cause last year while I was runningtheNewYorkMarathonmy dad fellill and he was diagnosed with can-cer. It’s a big personal issue.”
Abrahams adds that two mem-bers of the Ommiedraai AthleticClub, which helps himwith one hiscommunity projects, were also re-
cently diagnosed with the disease. The money for the project will be
raised by the 10 schools Abrahamshas enlisted, Mitchell’s Plain-basedNGO Making an Impact ThroughSport (MITS), the Ommiedraai Ath-letics Club, the Itheko Sport Athlet-ic Club and the ARD Athletic Club.
While the schools will keep all ofthe money that they raise to use ontheir own projects, and possibly do-nate a percentage to the two benefi-ciary NGOs if they wish to, the oth-er four organisations will donatearound 50 percent of the moneythey raise to amaBele Belles andCancervive.
The schools and organisationswill raise the funds using collectioncards; donate R5 for each of the Chi-cago Marathons 43 kilometres. Ab-rahams says he is certain that theR1 million can be raised throughthe project.
“Every school on average gets athousand cards which could bringin R250 000 even if they only bringin half of that money and we add itup we will have our R1 million,”says Abrahams.
“I am very confident that we canraise this money this year.”

Woodlands eye finalsLIAM MOSES
WOODLANDSUnited strengthenedtheir claim for a place in the EngenKnockout Challenge finals on Sat-urday after routingAshfordAthlet-ic in a play-off fixture at theStephen Reagan sports complex.
The Mitchell’s Plain side beat theirHeathfield opponents 4-0 to claim thetop spot in Group 3 of the play-offround. Woodlands dominated thematch virtually from the first whistle, camping in the opposition half, mo-nopolising possession and limitingAshford to counter attacks. The Ashford defence worked to keep
United at bay for most of the first half, but their resistancewas finally brokenaround half-way through the first half. The ballwas crossed into the penalty
area from a corner and Jason Millercapitalised on Ashford’s inability toclear the danger by smashing the ballinto the roof of the net.Woodlands were not made to wait
long for their second goal and againtook advantage of sloppy set-piece de-fending minutes later. Ashford failedto clear the ball from a corner andNazeer Stallboom slammed the ballhome during the ensuing goal-mouthscramble. Ashford grew desperate inthe second half and sent more playersforward, but the tactic proved fatal as
Woodlands simply reverted to the di-rect, counter-attacking play that hasbecome their hallmark. In the 37th minute, Woodlands at-
tacker Adrian van Niekerk was putthrough on goal after a pin-pointthrough-ball from one of his teammates. He smuggled the ball into thenet after the Ashford keeper fumbleda save.Van Niekerk struck the death blow
nine minutes later, when he turned onthe edge of the box and beat one manand to a clinical finish.Woodlands under-17 coach Elric
Claasen is confident his team will beable to beat National First Divisionside Vasco daGama in their next gameto their place in the last 16.“I think we will go through now that
we have won. I wanted this result; Ipredicted this result. We need onemore win to go through,” saysClaasen.“We are playing Vasco next
and I feel confident. They area big team, but winningagainst big teams is what ussmaller teams do.”Claasen believes his team’s
superior tactics and hardwork on the training groundpaid off during the match.“I think we won because of
our direct play. We exploitedtheir defensive system. Their
defencewasweakandourswas strong. That’s where we got our goals. I thinkour training paid off.We focused on setpieces during training.”Claasen, who also plays for the
Woodlands senior side, adds that histeamwere themoremotivated side be-cause the club is turning 20 this year. The final 16 teams for the Engen
Knockout Challenge will be decidedthis week after the last round of play-off fixtures takes place at the ThorntonSports Complex today and on Thurs-day.Today Stars of Africa face Kuils Riv-
er at 18:30, Bluegum United playGreenwood at 19:30, and Vasco playWoodlands at 20:30.On Thursday Bayhill United play
Bluegum at 18:30, Stars of Africa faceJamestown at 19:30 and Ashford Ath-letic take on Vasco da Gama at 20:30.
