People of the Sun is a Social Enterprise in Malawi, passionate about fusing the principles of design and business, to help artisans preserve their cultural heritage and lift themselves out of poverty through trade.

su p po r t: PS plays a critical role in supporting local communities to improve their lives. PS identifies and collaborates with artisan en-trepreneurs and enterprises, providing business and design training, skill development, supply chain and capacity development.

connec t: One of the most difficult obstacles for enterprises in Malawi is access to global markets. PS works extremely hard to find suitable logistic solutions regarding aggregation of products, ex-porting and access to international markets.

co l laborate: In order to appeal to a modern clientele, PS works closely with experienced international designers and retailers, providing a marketing platform, while propagating the benefits of trade to eradicate poverty.

i n novate: PS adopts a social business approach, establishing business partnerships with emerging artisan groups rather than conventional do-nation/charity work. Key advantages of this approach are the stronger sense of empowerment and ownership of artisans’ enterprise and work, which in turn brings increased sense of responsibility and efficiency. In this way artisan enterprises and PS become business partners with successful operations mimicking the international trade world. As a result there is a synergy, mutual trust and reciprocal dependency among partners. Our aim is to support entrepreneurship and craft skill amongst Malawian men, women and youth to step out of poverty through the development of sustainable craft enterprises.

2014 was a great year for People of the Sun !

Our partner artisan groups are growing and developing into strong enterprises, delivering high quality products in an efficient man-ner. Current enterprises include woodcarving (by hand and lathe machine), glasscutting, papermaking, tailoring, basketweaving and cane weaving.

Under the ID series in the past year we worked with swiss architects Lea Rickenbacher and Caroline Zimmerli developing the TWIN salad servers together with Bangwe carvers.

On an international arena PS procucts (cone and blatyre jar) made it to the official selection of best african products, during the Cape Town Capital of Culture and Blantyre Jar won the Coup de Coeur prize during the Africa Design Awards. Furthermore People of the Sun was selected and sponsored to participate in the Temporary Museum of New Design, during the Design Week in Milan, Italy as innovative and upcoming.

Finally we have to thank you, our most valued customer, for tru-

sting our brand and appreciating our products. People of the Sun and

all the artisans and enterprises have been incredibly encouraged by

the sales of last year and we all hope to receive many more orders

for 2015 to continue our healthy and steady growth that is enabling

People of the Sun to reach and train more and more artisans there-

fore sustaining more and more people in Malawi.
