Doing Research

Revised edition

Laetus O.K. Lategan,

Liezel Lues &

Hesta Friedrich-Nel

This book is written by authors with a passion for research development, with the purpose of giving novice researchers a holistic view of what they will encounter when doing research.

The interplay between scientific theory, academic research and professional practice is highlighted, as these are considered the corner stones to be mastered as early as possible in a young researcher’s career.

Methodology

Revised edition

G.D. Jordaan &

L.O.K. Lategan

Modelling as Research Methodology is written for the scientist and student researching the (expected) functioning of systems under specified conditions. As such, it represents an

introduction to the use of modelling in natural, human and economical sciences.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section illustrates the universal nature of modelling as aid to the researcher. In the second section, several typical examples of modelling are described.

RE:search

ABC

Down-to-earth assistance for the researcher

Liezel Lues &

Laetus Lategan

Delivering research outputs has become increasingly important for many students involved in working towards a research degree.

RE:search ABC highlights contemporary practices and provides a framework for an up-to-date understanding of the research process and the key issues associated with it. It integrates a number of imperative topics, including the writing of a research protocol, the applying of methodology in research projects, the respective roles of the supervisor and student, the writing of a scientific article and the presenting of research results. The analysis draws upon both theory and real case studies.

Supervision

Editor:

Laetus O.K. Lategan

This book provides a basic introduction to the supervision of postgraduate studies. At the centre of each discussion are examples of best practices and guidelines on how to

deal with all aspects associated with postgraduate supervision.

Both the postgraduate student and the novice supervisor are targeted in this book, although seasoned supervisors could also benefit from the reflections. In the development of a supervision culture a comprehensive research guide is needed.

Guidelines for writing theses and dissertations

Amanda Lourens &

Laetitia Bedeker

Where do I begin to write my thesis or dissertation? How do I get my thoughts onto paper? How do I combine all my results in one coherent whole? What is an academic writing style? How do I reference?

Scientific Writing Skills gives answers to these questions. It is the result of many courses in scientific writing skills to postgraduate students based on real writing problems and text examples from diverse disciplines. It is a practical yet scientifically sound guide that helps the student tackle scientific writing.

It is also available in Afrikaans as Wetenskaplike skryfvaardighede.

THE HUMANIST IMPERATIVE

IN SOUTH AFRICA

JOHN W DE GRUCHYEDITOR

The Humanist

Imperative in

South Africa

Editor:

John W. de Gruchy

This book is an outcome of the conversation that occurred during the five days of intense discussion at two symposia initiated by the “New Humanism Project”.

The struggle for a more humane society is both

local and universal, and increasingly these are connected in our time. So while the conversation focused specifically on South Africa, the discussion was neither parochial nor insular in its scope and character. Hopefully, then, people beyond South Africa will find the contents of this book of value to them in terms of their own contexts.

Exploring

Sustainability

Science

A Southern African Perspective

Michael Burns &

Alex Weaver

Southern Africa is well blessed with a diverse and vibrant human population and a wealth of natural capital. The key challenge for sustainable development is to grow

society’s capacity to use this natural capital to meet the needs of the region’s human population, especially the poor, in ways that sustain environmental life-support systems. Collaborating across disciplines, the authors explore the underpinning principles and the potential of sustainability science in a number of case studies.

Land-Sea Interactions in a Changing Ecosystem

Steven L. Chown &

Pierre W. Froneman

This book provides a modern, synthetic overview of what is known about the structure, functioning and interactions of marine and terrestrial systems at the Prince Edward Islands.

Building on more than 50 years of biological, geological, meteorological, and oceanographic research, it demonstrates not only how inextricably linked marine and terrestrial systems at the islands are, but also how global environmental challenges, such as climate change, biological invasions, and over exploitation, are playing out at the regional and local levels in the Southern Ocean.

Cape Town

Imagining a Livable City

Editor: Mark Swilling

Although cities constitute the key contributors to unsustainable development, especially due to their ecological and equity impacts, they are also viewed as the vehicle for the transition to a sustainable future for humanity both in terms of

technologies as well as policies and lifestyle changes.

This book introduces the theoretical principles which underpin the required transition to sustainable cities in general and Cape Town in particular. The subsequent fourteen chapters tackle more specific areas of interventions and the key constraints towards realisation of related transition interventions in the city of Cape Town.

Editor: Nicci Diederichs

The use and trade of medicinal plants in Southern Africa has been recognised as providing important primary health care benefits and livelihood opportunities, and being culturally significant. This industry and its current roleplayers are, however, threatened

by a number of factors, including unsustainable and declining raw material supplies, unsupportive legislative frameworks, poor organisation, limited capacity, and new entrants into the industry with commercial interests.

Selected themes from Bloemfontein at the beginning of the 21st century

Editors: Lochner Marais

& Gustav Visser

It is against a post-colonial backdrop that the collection of essays assembled in this book aims to make a contribution to

understanding the realities of urban centres which feature less frequently in the academic press. The research reported in this collection echoes and highlights many of the themes found in both urban theory derived from the realities of many “world cities”, and the challenges remarked upon in development theory seen in much of the work focused on South Africa’s main metropolitan regions.

Milan Holický

Reliability analysis for structural design provides an effective and consistent introduction of the theory of structural reliability. The wide involvement of the author in the development of such

design standards at various levels results in his ability to introduce advanced concepts in a clear and practical manner.

The book consequently not only provides an appreciation for the way in which reliability-based partial factor limit states design procedures are formulated in design standards, but also for ways in which these principles can be applied in design practice, particularly where high demands are placed on structural performance.

Toe my pa ná sy aftrede weer by ons in Frankryk kom woon het, het ek ontdek dat hy eintlik die Afrikaan was. Dit was moeilik om te verwerk. Ek moes ’n draai in die verlede gaan maak, weer oor begin, en probeer verstaan ...” Jean-Marie Le Clézio

During 2007, language-related issues were sources of acrimonious conflict in South Africa.

In Durban, the eThekwini Municipality embarked on a street- renaming process that sparked widespread controversy.

In Pretoria and Potchefstroom, Afrikaner activists continued their campaign against the renaming of their hometowns as ‘Tshwane’ and ‘Tlokwe’.

And in Ermelo, a high school decided to take the provincial education department to court in an attempt to regain its Afrikaans-only status.

This atlas maps various time-space dimensions of South Africa’s remarkable linguistic diversity to cast the geography of language within the conceptual framework

of geolinguistics. It shows how historical patterns of spatial language preponderance have developed to produce current patterns, and allows understanding of the way landscape has become regionally ingrained in the vocabulary of languages.

Studies in African language, literature, linguistics, translation and lexicography

M.J. Mojalefa

After forty years in academia, P.S. Groenwald leaves a rich heritage, which is measured not only in terms of his impressive list of publications, but also in

terms of those for whom he was the academic mentor. His versatility as academic is reflected in the variety of specialist fields in which his former students find themselves. Experts in literature and linguistics, lexicographers and translators all found their niches under his tutelage.

In appreciation of the enormous contribution that he made towards their careers and academic schooling, former students and colleagues have decided to honour him with this festschrift.

Ecriture et Standardisation

Ecriture et

Standardisation

des Langues

Gabonaises

Editors: Jacques Hubert &

Paul Achille Mavoungou

Ecriture et Standardisation des Langues Gabonaises addresses the language situation in Gabon, which is reflective of the state of many African languages in general. Specific issues discussed include the

alphabet and writing, orthography, challenges faced in terms of the standardisation of Gabonese languages, phonology, as well as graphic representation.

It enriches the debate on the development of minority languages and cultures which run the risk of extinction without an established system of writing these languages in terms of alphabet and phonetics.

Pedagogical Encounters

Yusef Waghid

This book contains a revised collection of previously published articles spanning a period of five years (2004-2009) during which my original thoughts on democratic citizenship education have been developed.

Central to this book is the notion that democratic citizenship education ought to be deliberative, compassionate and friendly in order that teachers and students (learners) may respect one another and take risks in and through their pedagogical encounters. In this way, hopefully, students and teachers may become more critical, explorative and engaging ...

Refusal,

Post-apartheid

Law

Editor: Karin van Marle

Refusal, Transition and Post-apartheid Law under editorship of professor Karin van Marle is indeed long overdue. As some of the authors in the relevant contributions to this publication rightly point out, Van Marle’s call for a

‘jurisprudence of generosity’, enabled through an ‘ethics of refusal’, signals a new shift in South African jurisprudence.

Through the lens of Van Marle’s ethics of refusal and her jurisprudence of generosity, the articles present fresh and meaningful interpretations in respect of a range of very relevant topics ranging from property theory and a rethinking of human rights, to the role of forgiveness and the dangers inherent in modern technology.

to constitutional development in South Africa.

These essays are the work of some of the best practical and academic legal minds in this country and, given South Africa’s recent successes in this field, represent an advanced position in constitutional thinking in the world.

Maritime

Security in

Southern

African Waters

Editors: Thean Potgieter &

Reiner Pommerin

Two thirds of the world population lies within 60 kilometres of the sea. Much of the well-being of our planet is dependent on the sea, as the bulk of international trade passes across oceans and through

ports, while the sea is a rich source of protein and contains profound wealth in terms of energy and natural sources. Inevitably, economic stability and development are therefore closely linked to maritime security.

This volume contains a selection of papers presented at an international conference on “Maritime Security in Southern African Waters” in Stellenbosch on 22-23 July 2008.

Justice

Editor:

A.J. (André) van der Walt

The bulk of the contributions in this publication originated in a research project initiated by the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) in 2002.

The book is based on the idea that the attainment of greater social and economic justice, specifically in the South African context, is strongly influenced by the implications and the coherence of various theories of social and economic justice.

The literature on the art of war over centuries presupposed that the decision maker was a single entity with a coherent and unitary political will.

The ideal strategy maker was thus an Alexander the Great, or a Napoleon. Little was written on the policy- and strategy-making process when there were multiple decision makers.

Strategy in peace was recognised especially in the Cold War as something just as real as strategy in war.

Breaking

The Role of Scenarios in Shaping South Africa’s Future

Nick Segal

The story of South Africa’s transition in 1994 to a non-racial democracy has been told many times, principally from the perspective of the political forces for change. But many other factors were at work, over many years,

which influenced not only the political outcome, but also the economic philosophy of the new ANC government.

This pioneering study explores one such set of factors, viz the ideas generated by three quite different privately initiated, but publicly disseminated scenario exercises undertaken in the period 1985-1992.

The battle against public corruption

J.S.H. Gildenhuys

Immoral, unethical conduct of politicians and public officials is a global scourge of the present day. The South African government is leading the battle against corruption in the public sector, and it must be supported by officials educated to recognise, and

enabled to combat, every appearance of this pestilence.

Ethics and Professionalism is essential equipment for such education. Having been constructed on the principles of knowledge progression and outcomes-based education, it sets out explaining the meaning of ethics and its importance for public officials.

A presentation in MS Powerpoint is also available on CD-ROM for instruction.

Strategy

A Summary of the Great Masters

Bertie du Plessis

Back to Basics! Strategy summarises the thoughts of strategists, like Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Von Clausewitz, Mao ... Also great thinkers, like Charles Darwin and John von Neumann.

The aim is to give you the essentials for a sanity check on your strategy; to give you the Really Big Picture. This booklet is about the wood, not the trees – a quick read of no more than fifteen minutes.

We get inundated with information and opinions. I believe that we get clarity by going back to basics, by cutting out the clutter and focusing on what is absolutely essential. It is by un-learning that we sometimes learn best.

Discovering meaning in the 18th Century Cape country dwelling

Yvonne Brink

Massive brickwork resulting in a towering gable; hollowing out a hillside in order to achieve a T-plan; adding a whole new T to the front of an old one in order to avoid ending up with a crooked H-plan – what did

these owners have in mind when investing so much time, energy and money in remodelling their farm dwellings to make them comply with certain set patterns?

The aim of this book is to find answers to this and a number of related questions in an endeavour to discover meaning in Cape colonial architecture through methods that involve more than relying on the study of archival documents only.

Anatomy of a transformer

Editor: Amanda Botha

Professor Chris Brink became the seventh Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University in January 2002. His five-year term of office was a reflection of difficult and challenging circumstances. Under his leadership, the University entered a new period of transformation

affecting particularly the historically Afrikaans universities.

This book is a collection of his most important speeches with reactions to it from the media. The book also includes contributions from various colleagues and acquaintances.

Music & Identity

Transformation & Negotiation

Eric Akrofi, Maria Smit &

Stig-Magnus Thórsen

Due to significant political and social changes over the last decade in their countries and worldwide, many scholars in the Nordic nations and in Southern Africa have been researching on “music and identity” – an area with a paucity of

literature. It is our hope that this book will be beneficial to scholars interested in the field of music and identity.

This volume is the result of the Swedish South African Research Network (SSARN) project, funded from 2004-2006 by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, under the theme “Music and Identity”.

Essays on the life and work of Stefans Grové

Editors: Stephanus Muller

& Chris Walton

Stefans Grové (*1922), regarded by many as Africa’s greatest living composer, possesses one of the most distinctive compositional voices of our time. He studied in Cape Town under Erik

Chisholm before becoming the first South African to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.

He took his Master’s at Harvard under Walter Piston, attended Aaron Copland’s composition class at the Tanglewood Summer School, and subsequently taught for over a decade at the renowned Peabody Institute in Baltimore before returning to his African roots in the early 1970s.

Ronald Stevenson on Music

Chris Walton

There is an undeniable fascination in reading the words that composers write. Whenever a composer puts finger to typewriter rather than pencil to manuscript paper, we inevitably hope that he might proffer us some insights into the

workings of the creative musical mind – that source of much mystery since the act of composition left the realm of low artisanship for that of High Art some two or three centuries ago. Composers who deal with words as naturally as they write notes are, however, a breed of exceeding rarity. Ronald Stevenson belongs amongst them and the proof of it is to be found amply in this book.

South African Jazz Musicians under Apartheid

Chatradari Devroop &

Chris Walton

In recent years, several texts have been published on South African jazz by various authors, but attention has been focused largely on the musicians who went into exile. Unsung is a book on jazz in our country, but from the performer’s perspective.

The musicians featured are the musicians who stayed. These men have had rich, enriching lives, and the best way to explore their story would be to give them the opportunity to tell it themselves.

African Music

Editors: Chris Walton &

Stephanus Muller

During the past two decades, the study of sexuality and gender in music has become a decidedly mainstream activity. To be sure, music has long been obviously and intimately involved in matters pertaining to

relations, both sexual and otherwise, between and amongst the sexes. Its use in courtship is the one that perhaps first comes to mind, this use being probably as old as music itself.

This book contains all the papers presented at the conference by the same name.

“The reflections offered in this book on how the churches, and voluntary sector in general,

contribute to welfare and development are very informative, and at the very cutting edge of work in the sociology of religion. The book contains original empirical material which helps to ground its discussions, and provide a comparative study with similar studies carried out in Europe. Altogether it skilfully blends theory, theology, sociology, empirical work, historical perspectives, and social policy and development approaches.” Prof Linda Woodhead, Professor of the Sociology of Religion, Lancaster University, UK

Perspectives on a fourth generation approach

Ignatius Swart

This book newly addresses the question about the Christian churches’ participation in development. The innovative element of this reflection is the way in

which the author finds meaning and significance, particularly in the concept of a fourth generation approach to strategic development engagement.

The book’s essential argument is that a fourth generation strategy – an approach that makes the contemporary social or people’s movements the primary subjects of its development action and theory – holds the greatest prospect for authentic participation by the Christian churches in development.

Some challenges for the South African church environment

Maria Ericson

This book explores how contemporary notions of reconciliation as a process of building, rebuilding and transforming relationships in the pursuit of a “just

peace”, or God’s shalom, may be applied not only to “race”, but also to gender relations in post-apartheid and post-TRC South Africa. After highlighting links between the past, the present and the future with regard to such relations in wider South African society, critical questions are asked about the churches as spaces and agents of a gender-inclusive shalom.

Preaching – described here in Johan Cilliers’s groundbreaking new book as the heart and soul of the church – requires both constant revision and fidelity to principles. Hence this book’s subtitle: “Revisiting the basic principles of preaching”.

From various theoretical and practical viewpoints, Cilliers critically examines the state and future of preaching and deals boldly with contentious issues such as the validity of legalistic and moralistic preaching.

God for us?

An analysis and assessment of Dutch Reformed preaching during the Apartheid years

Johan Cilliers

Preaching reveals, amongst other things, the state of the heart of the church – whether it be healthy or ailing. Sermons from the South African apartheid era taken from the official mouthpiece of the Dutch

Reformed Church (Die Kerkbode), as preached during the years 1960 to 1980, reveal a church sickened by an ideology that had a devastating effect on the country as a whole.

In this book, these sermons are analysed in depth, following a method of “close reading”, which not only takes the linguistic detail of each sermon very seriously, but also the theological perspectives conveyed by these details.

Highways and byways on the route towards an orthodox image of God

Since the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, theologians and philosophers have brought about profound changes in the discourse about God. The orthodox image of God, developed

in the previous seventeen centuries in Roman Catholicism, as well as within Protestantism, has come under great pressure, but it would be wrong to think that this image is no longer relevant and that only a few conservative Christians hold on to it.

Allan Boesak

Wat “besiel” my?

“[Praeg] applies the notion of ‘sacrificial violence’, as developed by Girard, to the genocide in Rwanda, necklace burnings in South Africa, and the phenomenon of family murders. He shows how there is an underlying logic tying these together, while at the same time

[the] insights gained leave no option but to rethink the manifestation of violence fundamentally.” Paul Cilliers, Department of Philosophy, Stellenbosch University

to family, neighbourhood, community, school, health, services, infrastructure, facilities, etc. While it is recognised that all play a role in safety, it is difficult to place a value on any one element, or on the impact of the state of that element on other elements or on safety as a whole ...

This conference aims to promote a dialogue across themes within the crime prevention and safety sector, with the intention of debating commmonly held values and assumptions.

Since the adoption of the Accra Declaration by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Accra, Ghana, 2004 churches in the Reformed communion all

GLOBAL CRISIS, GLOBAL CHALLENGE, GLOBAL FAITH – An Ongoing Response to the Accra Confession

Editors: Allan Boesak &

Len Hansen

In the course of three years, the Globalisation Project has gathered experts from a variety of disciplines to reflect together on

globalisation, its origins, its manifestations and consequences, particularly for the Christian religion and for Christian churches today.

This second volume on this theme in the Beyers Naudé Centre Series, also represents a selection of papers that were presented at consultations of the Joint Project, in this case during those held at Stellenbosch and Emden, Germany, in 2009.

Study Resources in Religion and Theology |

Studiebronne in Godsdiens en Teologie

The aim of this series is to develop appropriate resources for studies in the broad field of Religion and Theology. Such resources include textbooks aimed at undergraduate teaching, surveys of the relevant literature that may serve as an advanced introduction and bibliographical resources for postgraduate research. The textbooks in the series have to be understood in terms of three needs, namely for contextually relevant textbooks which assume the Southern African context as a frame of reference, for textbooks which are readily and continuously available (print-on-demand service), and textbooks which are affordable to tertiary students in the South African context.

The series is the initiative of the Department of Religion and Theology at the University of the Western Cape, but it also includes titles from authors not related to the department.

Angling for

Interpretation

A first introduction to biblical, theological and contextual hermeneutics

Ernst M. Conradie

The aim of this guide is to provide a first introduction to biblical, theological and contextual hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is the subject that analyses the process of interpretation. One could say

that hermeneutics is the theoretical study of interpretation. As a first introduction it is primarily aimed at first-year students, but church groups may also find it useful.

Resources for further research

Ernst M. Conradie

There has been a proliferation of publications in the field of Christian ecological theology over the last three decades or so. These include a number of recent edited volumes,

each covering a range of topics and consolidating many of the emerging insights in ecological theology. The call for Christian churches to respond to the environmental crisis has been reiterated numerous times in this vast corpus of literature, also in South Africa.

In search of an inspiring vision

Christianity and

Earthkeeping

In search of an inspiring vision

Ernst M. Conradie

Why should Christians engage in earthkeeping as Christians and from within Christian communities? What is the underlying theological rationale for that?

In this book some 19 reasons why Christians may be encouraged to engage in earthkeeping are identified, juxtaposed and assessed in order to call for clarity, to invite discussion and to elicit creative tensions. No single position is advocated – it would be helpful if Christians could engage in earthkeeping on the basis of any of these motivations.

Christian

Identity

An introduction

Ernst M. Conradie

This book is rooted in the quest for Christian identity in the Southern African context where Christianity is faced with many stark challenges, internal tensions and experiences of rapid social change.

The book explores six aspects of the highly complex notion of Christian identity, namely Christian institutions, a Christian ethos, Christian rituals, Christian experiences (with specific reference to the notion of “faith”), Christian narratives (with specific reference to the category of “revelation” and the place of the Bible in the Christian tradition) and Christian doctrine.

Collected Essays 1 – Dirk J. Smit

Editor: Ernst M. Conradie

What is the role of the church in society? What role did the church play in South Africa – during apartheid, in the struggle against apartheid and during the period of transformation?

The essays collected and published in this volume deal with questions such as these. They are all occasional pieces. They were written over two decades and reflect the times in which they originated – always intended for specific audiences, always addressing issues of the particular moment.

Versamelde Opstelle 2 – Dirk J. Smit

Essays on Being

Reformed

Collected Essays 3 – Dirk J. Smit

Editor: Robert Vosloo

What does it mean to be Reformed Christians in the world today – and in Africa and South Africa? What does it mean to commemorate the legacy of John Calvin (1509-1564) after 500 years – in a

modern world characterised by democracy, by popular notions of human dignity and human rights, by worldwide struggles for individual freedoms and for social justice, by a global economy in crisis – when social historians argue about the lasting contribution of Calvin and his followers precisely with respect to all these modern phenomena?

The 28 essays selected for this volume deal with such questions.

Morality as

a Way of Life

A first introduction to ethical theory

Ernst M. Conradie

Since the advent of democracy in 1994, there has been widespread concern over the disintegration of the moral fabric of South African society – amongst politicians, business

leaders, community leaders and religious leaders alike. Many have recognised the need to build the moral and religious foundations of society, and have encouraged contributions towards the moral regeneration movement.

Good Effect

An introduction to the theory and practice of rhetoric

Douglas G. Lawrie

Speaking to Good Effect introduces students to the ancient and ubiquitous art of rhetoric. Whenever we try to achieve something with words as our tools, we become rhetoricians.

Whenever we respond – positively or negatively – to someone else’s words, we become rhetorical critics. It is, therefore, not surprising that the art of rhetoric has been studied and taught for more than twenty-four centuries.

The translation of ‘covenant’ into Lomwe, with a focus on Leviticus 26

Stuart Foster

This study sketches a complete arc from the impact at worldview level of covenant concepts in the Hebrew of the Old Testament to impact at worldview level among present-day

Lomwe-speakers in northern Mozambique. It uses the challenge of adequately translating one Biblical Hebrew word, BERITH, to address missiological issues relevant throughout Africa. It proposes becoming the muloko wa Muluku, ‘people of God’, as a powerful integrating framework.

Metaphor in Zulu

Problems in the translation of Biblical metaphor in the book of Amos

Eric A. Hermanson

This study examines metaphor in Zulu in the light of conceptual metaphor theory from the perspective of a Bible translator. It then considers the possibility of translating Biblical Hebrew metaphor into Zulu.

Selected Hebrew metaphors in the Book of Amos are analysed according to conceptual metaphor theory and compared with the conceptual metaphor analysis of the corresponding verses in existing Zulu translations, thereby increasing the empirical basis of the theory, and showing that it is valid for the study of both Biblical Hebrew and Zulu and a useful tool for translators.

Scripture Frames & Framing: A Workbook for Bible Translators illustrates and further develops some

This workbook offers numerous exercises for analysing biblical texts and communicating them to contemporary audiences. The workbook proceeds by briefly introducing a key aspect of translation, giving exercises that will help clarify understanding of that aspect and of how it relates to translators’ particular communication situations, and then moving on to a related aspect.

thorough semantic analysis of selected Hebrew lexical items referring to negative moral behaviour in the book of Isaiah, and discusses the implications of the analysis for Hebrew lexicography.

The book first offers a critical appraisal of componential analysis of meaning, followed by a number of proposals to improve this analytical tool in order to bring it in line with modern insights from cognitive linguistics.

Mapping Kayamandi – Citizenship and Social Responsibility for Graphic Design Students

Facilitator:

Elmarie Costandius

Guest facilitator:

Sophia Rosochacki

A group of graphic design students and a group of Kayamandi high school learners embarked on a project of mapping Kayamandi, a township in Stellenbosch. The mapping was not strictly geographic, and student-learner partners were encouraged to explore various facets of social, personal, environmental, historical and cultural life in their documentation of the area.

The process of collaboration between young people from radically different life-worlds, who (often) hold deeply-ingrained suspicions and preconceptions about one another, is manifest in the product of that interaction.

A New Hope for

the Poor

A perspective on the church in informal settlements

Pieter Verster

Empowering the poor remains an essential part of the Christian Gospel. The way in which the absolute poor in informal settlements in Africa can be empowered by the message of the Bible, needs to be researched.

In research in informal settlements near Bloemfontein, Free State Province, South Africa, it has been established that the churches present in the situation are best equipped to relate to the poor and interpret the message of the Bible to them.

Local Elections:

Parties, People,

Politics

Editor: Susan Booysen

The central focus of this collection of essays is the politics of local government elections, and how the local electoral politics interfaces with local government (and government in general) and participation in South African politics.

The chapters link the local (with regard to the specific chapter theme) to the national and provincial, specifically because it is the local that helps us better understand the provincial and national.

A Decision Support Model (DSM) – Applications and Strategies

Editors: Wilma Viviers &

Ludo Cuyvers

The research which is reported in the present volume is the result of a long collaboration between the editors, going back to 2000, with a comparative study of competitive

intelligence of South African and Belgian exporters, funded under the Flemish government’s research programme for Bilateral Scientific and Technological Cooperation (BSTC) between Flanders and seven priority countries that included South Africa.

Management

Editor: M. Saayman

Sports tourism has definite economic, social and ecological impacts. In economic terms, it generates revenue and jobs. Its social impacts involve communication and exposure to other communities and cultures. Ecologically it impacts on the creation of infra- and supra-structures.

An African Perspective

Editor: Peter Vumisa

Evangelical Christian Missions: an African Perspective is written by people who are involved in African missions. They take the questions pastors ask, and answer them with

the information that pastors need to improve their and their congregations’ mission involvement, as well as their leadership skills. The book dispels many of the myths around missions in Africa and demonstrates a host of new opportunities for pastors and their local churches in the 21st century.
