Dear St. Raphael Parishioners,

On this Pentecost Sunday, I wish the blessings of the Holy Spirit to all of you! Pentecost brings us to the end of the Easter season, a great liturgical change. In this way the Liturgy echoes the profound change that the first Pentecost brought to the lives of the Apostles and the early Church. Pentecost Sunday may not be a civil holiday as are Christmas and Easter, but for the Church, Pentecost ranks as a Solemnity equal to them.

The second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles describes the great coming of the Spirit in detail, but by then the Holy Spirit has already been men oned a few mes in the Gospels. It always seemed curious to me that scripture would men on the Holy Spirit without describing what it means! There probably was a developing idea in Judaism of that me about God sending His holiness to people in the form of invisible spirit. The Old Testament men ons God’s holy spirit a number of mes, but it is not considered a Divine Person. It was not even a clearly defined concept in the centuries before Christ.

I am inclined to think that the early Chris ans spoke so easily about the Holy Spirit

because there was evidence of the Spirit’s power in their everyday lives! For example, the Acts of the Apostles describes several miracles of healing that took place in the me a er Pentecost. These miracles were seen as evidence that Jesus was s ll present among His disciples. As the number of Chris ans grew, the Holy Spirit was shown less in extraordinary events like miracles, and more in the ordinary interac ons between people, especially Charity.

The Catholic Church teaches that the power of the Holy Spirit is what keeps us united.

The Spirit is like a “spiritual glue’ or bonding force that overcomes the natural human tendency towards division. The fact that the Church s ll exists a er two thousand years of human sinfulness is itself a witness to the Holy Spirit’s power. We certainly cannot claim that the holiness of the Church comes from our collec ve goodness as human beings! We may all be capable of goodness at mes, but the overall record of history is not encouraging when it comes to human behavior! Nor can we give credit to outstanding leadership for the Church’s survival. The Church has had some good and saintly leaders, no doubt. But for every Saintly pope or bishop there is likely more than one who was mediocre or worse.

How the Spirit makes the Church holy might be beyond our full understanding, but we can

s ll be grateful and give thanks for it. This is what we celebrate each Pentecost. God bless you all,

Fr. Ma hew Kowalski

A Beginner’s Course in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This series will address the particular Periods and Steps for those who are Catechumens or Candidates in the process of initiation. For each of the periods of the initiation process, we will look at what the Church envisions for each period, the Liturgical Rites of each period, what should be happening in each period, and who is involved. It is par cularly geared toward new RCIA team members: new directors, priests, deacons, catechists, etc., as well as

fully-ini ated Catholics who want to learn more about the process for their own enrichment. Experienced team members are welcome to a end as a refresher.

We will frequently refer to the ritual text, Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults. Those who do not have a copy are encouraged to purchase or borrow one from their local parish RCIA Team.

Knights of Columbus Blood Drive

In the past, the Knights of Columbus have held blood drives either in the Lifesource (now Vitalant) mobile collec on van or in the church basement. Because of low turnout and COVID, we haven't been able to hold a blood drive since the middle of 2019.

Vitalant (formerly Lifesource) will run a “Virtual Blood Drive.” Parishioners are asked to go to one of the Vitalant Donor Centers in Gurnee, Lake Bluff or Crystal Lake in May, August and/or November. If things improve by then, hopefully we can switch to onsite drives. The Virtual Drives would run for a period of 4 weeks in order to give donors the opportunity to go into one of our centers.

Vitalant has had many cancella ons for dona ons and are at cri cally low levels. The strain on the blood supply is cri cal and more blood is needed for COVID-19 pa ents that are put onto respirators and require dona ons. Please help make a difference during this pandemic.
