A Note From Pastor Janet Wold

Dear Friends, Spring is a good time to be reminded of the powerfulness of

God – all around us are signs of new life coming out of what

appears to be dead, sounds of powerful thunderstorms and

reports of tornados and hurricanes soon to come. From the

smallest blade of grass appearing from the dull, gray ground

to the miracle of the resurrection on Easter morning, we are surrounded daily by

wonders of God.

On Sunday, April 16, we celebrated Easter – the miracle of the resurrection of

our Lord! Our joy has been made complete, knowing that our Savior has broken

through the bonds of death in order to bring eternal life to us all! Thank you to

all who made our Lenten services so meaningful, including our Maundy

Thursday worship and our community Good Friday service. It is the somberness

of those services that make the brightness of Easter that much more profound! It

was a joyous day.

And now we live in that promise of an “Easter life” – as I said in the sermon on

Easter, life is just life, but Easter life is more. Easter life is the power of God that

overcomes death, dying, loss, pain and tragedy. Easter life can only be

represented by the kind of life that comes as a sweet, unexpected surprise – life

from death. With that assurance, we can move forward, knowing that God loves

us beyond the grave, and gives us peace and life. What a gift – what a miracle.

May all of us feel the power of the Risen Lord in our lives on this day and always.

In Christ –

Pastor Janet Wold

THE GATHERING The GATHERING will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 am on Tuesday May 9. Bring your craft to work on or just come and enjoy the fellowship and fun!

QUILTERS

The quilter’s plan to meet on May 4th from 9 to 11 am at the church. Twelve ladies came in April to work together to make comforters for people in need. We were happy to meet Deb Walters who recently donated fabric to our cause and decided to come and see what happens at All Saints on a quilting morning. Chances were sold for two of the quilts at the WELCA rummage sale. Other quilts were donated for fundraising events within our church in the months ahead. The first Thursday morning of every month is when we gather to work on quilts and enjoy Christian fellowship. Please join us whenever you want.

WELCA WELCA - Thanks to You So many thanks to share for all the support in April. Thanks for supporting the bake sale. We made almost $300. Thank you for all the contributions of items and volunteers for the April rummage sale. There was so much to sell and so many people who shared their time and efforts to make the sale happen. We were able to raise $1800.00! The Quilts that were raffled went to Audrey Adams and Alice Mastricola. Our quarterly meeting is Saturday, April 29th at 9:30 am. We will share breakfast treats and learn of different op-tions for the replacement of blinds in the fellowship hall and look at upcoming activities.

Northern Illinois Synod Assembly 2017 IN-KIND OFFERING

Each June, all of the churches of the Northern Illinois Synod gather at Augustana College in Rock Island for the Annual Synod Assembly. At each Synod Assembly, the member churches are asked to bring an in-kind offering to help a specific charity. This year at the Assembly, to be held June 16 and 17, we are asked to bring gift cards and/or smoke/carbon monoxide detectors to be donated to foster families through Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI). A collection point will be set up in the nar-thex of our church to collect these items. If you would prefer, you can write a check payable to All Saints, designating NI Synod In-Kind Offering, and we will purchase needed items. Deadline to donate is June 11. Below is a further explanation of this need: Often, children are unable to be placed in a home because of the simple absence of a smoke/carbon monoxide detector. Your donation will help children in need of a safe and loving home to be placed quickly. Gift cards take up little room in the small spaces of LSSI offices and can be used for: ·Awarding a child who has met a goal on their

service plan ·Helping a foster family get prepared to take in a

child ·Providing clothing and other necessities to a child

when first being placed ·Purchasing items for projects and activities at group

sessions and family therapy · Providing a gas card to a family so they can get to

necessary appointments · Providing Birthday, Christmas and other gifts to

children throughout the year · Purchasing school supplies ·Taking a child or family out to eat for a special

occasion Suggested gift cards (in any amount): Wal-Mart,

Target, Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Casey’s General Store, Toys R Us, Hy-Vee Grocery, Schnucks Grocery, Woodman’s Grocery, McDonald’s, Subway, Culvers, Gas Cards (Shell, Mobil, Amoco).

May6th ….Faith week for the Northern Illinois

Food bank, from 9-12 pm, Saturday.

We would need to get a group of 5-6 people to go and help out. Anyone can come help out: Family members and friends can go, too. We would be packing up cans of food so they can be shipped to needy families. We will meet at All Saints church at 8 am and leave from there to go to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. We need chaperones to drive and go with our youth.

ALTAR GUILD Thank you! The Easter garden in the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday morning was especially beautiful this year. Thank you to all who contributed flowers to our Easter garden! We have many opportunities for you to donate altar flowers for the remaining Sundays this year. Please check out the flower reservation book in the Fellowship Hall and pick a Sunday or two. The bouquets are $18.00 each and you can take your bouquet home after it has been displayed for two weeks.

Stewardship

Hopefully you have had an opportunity to review, fill out,

and return your time and talent sheet(s). As you know, All

Saints relies on many volunteers each week for us to fulfill

and provide for our ministry. Thank you for the offering of

your time and talents! If you have not yet had a chance to

return your form, please do so at your earliest convenience

as we will be updating our lists shortly.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11

Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap

sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap

bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his

heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a

cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to

you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you

may have an abundance for every good deed.

Blood Drive

A big thank you to all who donated blood on April 6th. According to the Rock River Blood Bank, a total of 61 units were collected. This is a wonderful number - that means 180 lives could be saved. Also, a huge thank you to Jan Sloan who made many, many phone calls to line up the donations. Meals on Wheels All Saints Lutheran Church will be responsible for delivering meals the last week in April and May 1 – 26. The deliveries are all here in town and the route takes less than 30 minutes. If you would like to help with delivery, please call Pam Kultgen at 815-985-1948. St. Vincent dePaul Society Fundraiser Thank you to Deacon Tom and Faith Pauling for the temple talk on April 2 describing the good works within our community done by the people at St. Vincent dePaul. Each year almost $30,000 is spent within Byron and the surrounding communities to help those in need. The quilt raffle brought in a winning bid of $250, plus donations of $257, therefore, we have raised $507 to send to this worthwhile organization. An Ice Cream Social to benefit St. Vincent dePaul is in the works in the coming months so watch the bulletin for further information.

Book Club

This month's Book Club choice is Secrets of Harmony Grove

by Mindy Starns Clark. Marketing executive, Sienna Collins

is put on unpaid leave due to a federal investigation into a

crime of which she has no knowledge. Getting a strange call

from an ex-boyfriend at the B&B she owns in Harmony

Grove, PA, and is unable to get a hold of him after he hangs

up on her, she goes to the inn. She finds him dead along with

her manager, who is near death. She finds the inn has had

almost no visitors, yet the manager had been sending her

money and reports of a good business. Long-held family

secrets take you from the serene setting of Amish country to

Nazi Germany and the concentration camps. In an attempt to

clear her name, unravel the secrets, and learn the truth, she

calls on her strength and faith to survive.

Come help us unravel the mystery on May 22, at 1:00 pm.

New Lawn Tractors!

The new Lawn tractors have been delivered to our church just in time for the 2017 mowing season. Thank you to those that contributed to the purchase of the mowers. One of the old mowers has been sold to one of our members, and the other old mower will be used to mow the ditch along Route 2, which will save wear and tear on our new tractors. I conducted a short introduction to the new tractors with our team of lawn-mowing volunteers between services on April 23rd. We reviewed some of the recommended fluid level checks and inspections necessary prior to using the mowers. We discussed the controls so that we ensure the safety of the driver as well as those nearby. By following good maintenance practices these mowers will serve us well into the future. If you are interested in joining our team of lawn mowing volunteers, and missed it on the time and talent form, please let me know. We each mow about 3 or 4 times per year, and we work in teams of two. We are blessed to have a good number of lawn mowing volunteers but we can always use more helpers. Maintaining an attractive lawn and landscape is just one more way for us to glorify God. Respectfully, Randy Mastricola

Library News The Library books being added to the library are displayed on the cart this month. Donated by Audrey Adams:

The Message by Eugene H. Peterson is The Bible in Contemporary Language. A Miracle a Day by Ann Spangler is a book of Stories of Heavenly Encounters. Discovering the Treasures of a Godly Woman by Elizabeth George is a Bible study

for women on Proverbs 31. Parenting Teens, A Field Guide by Janice A. Thompson uses men and women from

the Bible as biblical tour guides to bring teens through the tough issues they face in today's world.

A few books donated by Pastor Bill Wittig: Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels makes us look at our habits and thoughts, and

teaches us to slow down, to listen, to talk, and to walk with God. The Intimate Gospel by Earl F. Palmer is a study in John, the "most personal and

revealing of all the portraits of Jesus in the New Testament." The Joyful Christian by C.S. Lewis contains 127 selections from his theological

works arranged in devotional style. Rand McNally's Bible Atlas by Emil G. Kraeling contains 40 full color maps, and

300 photos, illustrations and sketch maps leading to a "Contemporary Picture of Bible Geography."

Spring Clean-Up Day Success!

The annual “Spring Clean-Up Day” at church was held on Saturday, April 8th. God blessed us with perfect

weather in the low 70s, which made our tasks easier. Many tasks were completed, including window washing, inside and outside, general cleaning, dusting, spreading

mulch, picking up many branches and twigs, raking leaves, and trimming shrubs.

The mulch was paid for using a $250 grant from Thrivent Financial.

We were so blessed to have so many volunteers join in our efforts. A sincere THANK YOU to all of you. This is another example of our congregation “Responding to
