How can we help?

Rathbone Pension & Advisory Services

Our focus at Rathbone Pension & Advisory Services is to help individuals and families develop a

clear plan for their financial future. Within this we aim to establish and subsequently achieve their short,

medium and long-term financial goals in a way that will give them peace of mind.

We thoroughly review a client’s current financial position and objectives for the future before

considering any possible routes forward. As one of the few chartered financial planning businesses in

the country, our professionals are experts in their fields, with considerable experience in areas such as:

pensions and retirement planning including the options available upon reaching retirement;•

mitigation of inheritance tax and effectively passing assets on to future generations;•

protecting individuals and their families in the event of a death or a critical illness;•

valuing and assessing pension entitlements, and the treatment of these in divorce settlements;•

protecting an individual’s business against any unforeseen circumstances that could potentially •

jeopardise both their business and their own financial position.

The most important thing to us is to add value to our clients’ financial future by understanding their

needs and building long-term relationships based on trust.

I have several different pension plans – what should I do?

Many people have a number of pension arrangements accumulated from different providers. These arrangements are invested in funds that may have been the right choice at the time but have not been reviewed recently.

If this sounds familiar the answer might be combining your pension investments into fewer “pots” or indeed one single arrangement, and perhaps have your investments managed by an investment professional alongside any other investments you have, such as ISAs.

This approach can also give you access to pension products that allow the full range of flexible retirement options offered by current legislation, which may not be available from older-style policies. We can look at all the options and advise whether consolidation of any or all your policies is right for you to help you achieve your retirement goals.

How should I manage my inheritance tax liabilities?

Individuals often dismiss inheritance tax as a tax that someone else will pay after their death or live in the hope that it will be changed for the better by a new government or a change in government policy.

In advising on taxation and the use of trusts we work very closely with the dedicated tax and trust teams at Rathbones.

The most important thing is to look at your total wealth and decide how much of it you actually need to retain in order to maintain your lifestyle.

There may then be ways of taking much of the remainder out of your estate for IHT purposes perfectly legitimately, such as gifting it. But the sooner you look at the options the better as these narrow significantly the older you get.

Our financial modelling techniques can help and there are a number of methods that can be employed to reduce your potential tax liability, including the use of life assurance and trusts, often on a very competitive and flexible basis.

This is one of those questions that people are often afraid to ask but without a clear plan many people end up putting money into a pension on the basis of hoping for the best rather than a structured plan of investment to meet a particular goal.

How do I protect my wealth?

It is always easier to focus on just achieving your financial goals and dismissing the “what if?” scenario of something going wrong. But what if something did happen to you or your spouse? Would you and your family be able to maintain your lifestyle?

Life insurance has the reputation of being something that is sold not bought, but it can be invaluable in providing peace of mind and you may be surprised at how cost-effective it can be. We have the full range of planning tools available to make sure this peace of mind is achieved whilst being both affordable and, above all, relevant to you and your circumstances.

How do I generate an income from my pension fund?

You can start taking benefits from your pension plans as early as your 50th birthday (or 55 from 2010) which usually means the ability to access up to 25% of your pension fund as a tax free lump sum with the remainder used to provide an income. How to draw this income is a decision that will affect your income for the rest of your life.

Do you need an annuity and if so what kind? Should you take an income directly from your pension fund and at what level? The rules change again when you reach 75 so it is important to regularly review the position as further limits and restrictions are applied.

We can guide you through the options both for your pension fund(s) and any other sources of income you may potentially have to maximise your retirement income and minimise taxation and other costs.

How much do I need to save, to retire when I want?

We have a financial modelling process that allows us to look at a range of potential scenarios and allows you to plan accordingly. We find that once the facts are known, the fears many people have about whether they will be able to meet their retirement income expectations dissipate.
