Volume IX, No. 2, December 1990 Pennsylvania Research MAGS members who were able to attend the Fall Conference were treated to a wealth of information on Pennsylvania research. While it is impossible to treat the entire program in the space available, some of the major points made by the speakers as well as a few other notes gleaned from various sources will be provided. Dr. Smucker provided handout which included a list of archives, etc. in southeastern Pennsylvania where the researcher might find information about religious groups. Readers will find this information reprinted with Dr. Smucker's permission on page 22. Frances Waite, who spoke on using tax records, also provided an extensive bibliography. In addition to the tax records published in the Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, Volumes XI - XXII, she recommended Helen Hutchison Woodroofe's "A Genealogist's Guide to Pennsylvania Records" published in The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Volumes XXXI - XXXV, for the counties of Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Lancaster, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia and York. Those researchers especially interested in Bucks County might wish to obtain Bucks County Tax Records 1693 to 1778 (Doylestown, 1982) by Terry A. McNealfy and Frances W. Waite. The Pennsylvania State Archives at Harrisburg (currently closed for repairs), the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the Family History Library all have microfilmed copies of most southeastern Pennsylvania tax records. Dr. Wokeck's talk on ship's passenger lists graphically illustrated two points that knowledgeable researchers make over and over. Points which cannot be over emphasized. It is necessary to study the history of the time in order to know what to look for and where to look. It is often possible to pick up a lost trail by studying the background of other family members, friends and neighbors. Most people do not emigrate in isolation. And, secondly, no matter how through and knowledgeable the translator/editor of a historical document is, he cannot bring to the work the specific knowledge of family that the individual researcher has and can and does make errors in translation/transcription: check the original record. A final note on Pennsylvania research and a lead-in to our Spring Conference at Shepherdstown which will concentrate on western Pennsylvania and West Virginia research is a recent article in Antique Week ( September 3, 1990). It seems that much of the material published in The Horn Papers: Early Westward Movement on the Monongahela and Upper Ohio 1765-1795 by W.F. Horn (Scottsdale, Pa.: Harold Press, 1945) has been examined and found to be forged. Another reminder that just because it's in print doesn't mean its true.

Baxter, Angus. In Search of Your EuropeanRoots: A Complete Guide to Tracing YourAncestors in Every Country in Europe. Baltimore:Genealogical PubUshing Co., Inc., 1985 (1988).xix, 289 pp.; index; softcover.

This is not a book on European travel orhistory; it is primarily a list of the types of recordsproduced in a given country and the most likelyrepositories for these records. Short lessons inhistory are given when it is necessary tounderstand migration patterns, date changes, andpossible sources for specific records. One iswarned that German ancestry does not mean thatancestral records wiU necessarily be found inGermany. Many Germans settled in the Ukraine,Transylvania, Hungary, Jugoslavia, Czechoslovakiaand other areas of Europe.

At the end of the section on Germany theauthor recommends writing to the depository inanticipation of a visit. We would do well toremember this when traveling in the States as weU.Archives and Ubraries close temporarily andrecords move. Today in Europe these changesmay be more dramatic than usual. However, thevalue of this book remains.

In addition to information on archives, the

author has included lists of genealogicalassociations. It is obvious that a book of this sizecannot give aU the ins and outs of Europeanresearch, but it does provide a composite overviewof thirty European countries,(continued on page 32)

Bentley, Elizabeth Petty. County CourthouseBook. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.,1990. ix, 386 pp.; softcover.

Current addresses, phone numbers and copycharges are provided. The date of origin and theparent county, territory, etc. are given. The authorrelied on her questionnaires for specific holdingsand the information is assumed to be correct.Erroneous information creeps in when there is amisinterpretation. For example, Virginia has noseparate naturalization records and most countiessurveyed returned the answer, "no records."Augusta County which apparently returned anextensive explanation gave the correct answer:"mustbe searched for." OrangeCountyis listed ashaving none, although this reviewer personaUyabstracted the records for 1734-1782 and thesewere pubUshed in The Magazine of VirginiaGenealogical Society. Chesterfield Countyapparently returned no information and nothing islisted. Again this reviewer abstracted the recordsappearing in one order book and these werepublished in the Southside Virginian. There areother errors. Orange County marriages are listedas beginning in 1857, they actuaUy begin almostahundred years earlier although only a few remainprior to the Revolutionary War.

Errors aside, the value of this book lies in thecurrent addresses and the information it doesprovide. We are often reminded when consultingabstracts to check the original; here, too, we needto remember this admonition. We need to use thisbook as a guide and not the "last word." If you

32

plan to do any research out of your own immediatearea, you wiU find this bookof value. One phonecaU to check the hours ofoperation or to determineif the records you seek are there or at anotherrepository may well save you a trip and more thanthe price of the book.

Pedigo, Virginia G. and Lewis G. Pedigo.History of Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia.Baltimore: Genealogical PubUshing Co., Inc., 1990(1933). viii, 400 pp.; hardcover.

The first seventy-eight pages of this bookcomprise thehistory portion. Thenext 222 pagesprovide sketches of "Prominent Families" and thelast one hundred pages Usts 809 abstracts ofpatents and grants taken from the land books at theVirginia State Archives. These abstracts begin in1779 and give the book and page number, thenames of the grantee, the date, acreage and a briefdescription of the location.

While theonehundred plusfamily sketches aretypical of the period when the book was written inthat they give no documentation, they do providea place to begin. Many give the origin of thefamilies. Be warned that the "index" is reaUy afour and one-half page table of contents. A fuU-name index would have been a real plus.

Writtenby Hank Jones, Jr. (Those MAGS members whowere lucky enough to be at the 1989 fallconference wiU remember him.), a FeUow of theAmerican Society of Genealogists and winner ofthe Jacobus award for his book on New YorkGermans, this book traces 172 different Germansurnames of 1710 Palatine immigrants to Ireland. Many of the descendants of these German toIreland immigrants later moved to America andCanada.

Rarely does one find such a definitive study inprint. Seldom can we be sure that the research isof a quaUty to be trusted. Here we have both. IfJones is not sure, he tells you. While specificdocumentation is lacking, Jones gives the source ofhis information and the complete description of thesource is to be found in his "Some Hints for Usingthis Book." Anyone with German ancestry ofunknown origin and many with "Irish" ancestrywould be weU advised to check this book for apossible answer to their problem.

Harris, Maurine and Glen. ConciseGenealogical Dictionary. Salt Lake City, Utah:Ancestry, Inc., 1989. xii, 259 pp.; softcover.

Have you ever: Plowed through Black's LawDictionary trying to figure out what a legal termmeant two hundred years ago? Wondered whyonly "neat" cattle were taxed? Wanted to knowwhat kind of disease killed an ancestor who diedof cramp colic! Wondered what ca sa or LSmeant when found on a legal document? Wantedto know what your relatives were doing when theydeUvered livery of seisin? Then this is the bookfor you.

This is not meant to be a definitive study andit isn't. For example, the explanation of entail is

of little value; it would take pages to cover thetopic. However, the authors have provided asmaU, easy to take with you book that gives a briefdefinition of many of those terms encountered inour searches and nowhere else. In addition, to thedefinitions there is a separate section dealing withcommonly found abbreviations; however, if one isnot familiar with Latin reference wiU often have to

be made to the term itself in the first section.

While I am sure items have been omitted and

some of the definitions do not cover all of the

useful meanings, this is stiU one of those booksthat should be in any genealogical Ubrary.

Hoenstine, Floyd G. Guide to Genealogicaland Historical Research in Pennsylvania. n.p.:n.p.,1978. iv, 604 pp.; last-name index; hardcover.

Pennsylvania researchers usually encounter theHoenstine Rental Library somewhere in theirsearch. The Guide is a list and brief description ofthe books available for rent from the Hoenstine

Library. The book is an annotated bibliography ofPennsylvania research sources, but the mainattraction to most researchers is that it also indexes

the surnames of the famiUes in these books. While

most of the books do deal with Pennsylvaniahistory and genealogies many do not. J.T.McAUister's Virginia Militia and Ohio VaUey inthe Colonial Days are among the entries.

The author warns that aU names are not

included in the index "being too numerous," andthat items listed for the locality should also besearched. However, when the reference forCumberland County was checked the note"References too numerous to include. Name found

in aU communities." was found. The book is not

definitive; few are. It is a valuable source book(continued on page 34)

The authors have done extensive work inmicrofilmed German records and have provided1717 descendants with answers to their Germanancestry.
