Age UK Lancashire is a local charitable organisation. The day-time support Service provides specialist day care facilities for people living with dementia in both Burnley and Pendle. We provide a happy and vibrant environment where people can enjoy each other’s company while they are supported during the day.This leaves family members free to have a break knowing that their loved one is in a safe and supportive environment. We offer a wide range of flexible activities built around individual needs and focus on specific outcomes such as encouraging social interaction, restoring self-esteem, regaining basic life skills and most importantly having fun.

Age UK Blackburn with Darwen provides a range of services for local older people, actively including those with dementia and their family and carers. We have a comprehensive Advice and Information service, including home visits for the housebound. Our two-day care centres offer both personal care and a wide choice of activities tailored to individual needs. as well as carer respite. The majority of people attending have dementia. Our numerous Ageing Well activities also include the possibility of a volunteer “Dementia Buddy” to aid participation. Our befriending volunteers are available to visit or telephone isolated and lonely older people including many who have dementia.

Admiral Nurses are mental health nurses, specialising in dementia and in supporting families affected by the condition, including the person with dementia and any care provider(s) involved. Admiral Nurses seek to improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their families, by using a range of interventions to help those affected by the condition to live positively, and to assist them in developing skills to improve communication and maintain relationships. Admiral Nurses also uniquely join up different parts of the health and social care system, enabling the needs of families and people with dementia to be addressed in a co-ordinated way. They provide consultancy and education to professionals to model best practice and improve dementia care in a wide range of settings.

Burnley Home library service provides a door-to- door delivery service to people who are housebound because of age/disabilities/or who are carers. Library items are selected by a librarian and then delivered every 3 weeks by Royal Voluntary Service volunteers. We also offer a MEMORY BOX loan scheme, in partnership with the Lancashire County Council museum service, for people with dementia . Burnley Libraries have 3 Dementia friends champions who will be training all library staff to make libraries in Burnley dementia friendly.

Homewise is the local Home Improvement Agency for Hyndburn. We provide impartial help and advice to anyone who lives in the Borough. We work alongside The Council, Social Services and many other organisations, helping people to be able to live in their homes safely and securely. We are Accredited Retailers and NHS Prescription Providers for disability aids and as well as selling new products and operating a recycling centre, we offering a range of other services. E.g. We have a handy person’s service for smaller type jobs and also provide quotations for larger joinery works. If the client is uncertain about works that need carrying out to their property, our technical officer will call and provide a list of works that need attention and if finances are an issue we will look into possible grant funding that can help.

We provide a wide range of services to help older and disabled people with repairs and adaptations. Our handyperson service is available throughout East Lancashire (except Hyndburn) and costs only £6 per half hour (inc VAT) making it ideal for small jobs. For larger jobs we have a panel of carefully chosen private contractors covering all trades. We provide full technical support and may be able to raise some or all of the necessary funding for people who may be struggling to pay for the work.We are an approved supplier of daily living aids and will deliver free of charge anywhere in East Lancashire.We have contracts with the County Council for the installation of minor adaptations throughout East Lancashire (except Hyndburn).

The Ageing in Learning Disabilities team is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Psychology, Psychiatry, Speech and Language Therapy and Community Nursing. The team operates in Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Burnley, Pendle, and Rossendale and offers prospective dementia screening for adults with Downs Syndrome because of their increased risk of developing dementia. The team also accepts referrals for adults with learning disabilities where there are concerns of dementia. Following diagnosis of dementia, the team provides the individual diagnosed and their carers with regular person-centred dementia support and guidance.

We are the older adult mental health liaison service and we cover Blackburn hospital, Burnley General, Accrington Victoria, Pendle Community and Clitheroe Hospitals. We accept referrals from all wards for people suffering with both organic and functional mental health problems. Although we are an older adult service, where cognitive or organic problems are the issue we also become involved with people under 65. We provide a thorough assessment of people whilst an inpatient and where appropriate give advice to the patient, carers and staff looking after them. We then signpost to the most relevant place on discharge from hospital - whether this is to voluntary services, primary care, or secondary mental health services.

The Memory Assessment Services aim to deliver quick and timely diagnosis to people whose symptoms suggest they may have dementia. They provide patients who meet the referral criteria with a person-centred service, designed to empower people with dementia and their carers to make informed decisions in order to maximise quality of life. Involvement with the service should also help to reduce the risk of crisis later in the illness and enable the patient to be cared for at home for as long as possible. If you think that you have problems with your memory then you should approach your GP, who will complete a short five minute test with you. Following this, if required, the GP will refer you to your local Memory Assessment Service for a more in-depth assessment.
