Director’s MessageSummer is finally here! The 2014 winter has been a season we will remember for a long time, from the bitter cold days to the seemingly never-ending snowstorms. That is all behind us now and we have a fantastic brochure with lots of great programs and events to enjoy during the next several months.

The Summer Amphitheater series is back for an amazing 11th season, and we have a great lineup scheduled once again. It will all begin on May 30. The Independence Day Celebration is all set for Friday, July 4 and the parade (2:00 PM) and fireworks are a Penfield tradition.

I challenge all residents to get out and enjoy what Penfield has to offer! Whether you sign up and take a program with us, or enjoy one of the many parks the town maintains, or go for a walk on any of the numerous hiking trails available - the opportunities are endless to become active and healthy in Penfield.

One of the topics I continually talk about with staff as well as residents is partnerships and collaborations. I am always amazed at how many organizations the recreation department works with to bring the best quality to the residents of Penfield. I believe this town is unique to have developed the relationships with so many different organizations. From the partnership with Wegmans on our Wellness Campaign to the Penfield School District, Rotary and Kiwanis - the list is endless and the gratitude is large. I look forward to developing more partnerships, because, to be effective in meeting the needs of the residents, the more we work together the better the result.

Enjoy the summer, and I hope to see you in the building or at a park. Feel free to say hello and share any ideas or comments you might have!

suPervisor’s Message

suPervisor’s Message

- Tony LaFountain, Penfield Town Supervisor -It seems good to finally be discussing late spring and summer programs. This past winter has been one like we have not seen in a while and I know most everyone I speak with is glad it is behind us. I would like to take

a moment to recognize our Department of Public Works, specifically the highway, parks, facilities, and sewer departments, for their snow removal efforts during the demanding 2013-14 season. This dedicated group of men and women are responsible for road plowing, salting, sidewalk clearing, and parking lot management at all our sites. They are out in conditions the rest of us try to avoid to help maintain safety for all of our residents who drive or ride to work, school and other activities across the community. Please join me in thanking all of our DPW employees for their work and dedication to Penfield! Our Recreation Department has been busy putting together a great lineup of programs for residents of all ages and interests. Please check out the variety of wellness programs from aquatics to zumba; scenic treks on our growing trail system and parks to the very popular Daytime Education At Recreation (DEAR) series; and let’s not forget the 2014 amphitheater concerts beginning with the second annual jazz and food rodeo and concluding with the

renowned Tastin’ the Blues. The upcoming season promises to be the best and most dynamic we have seen. Be sure to register early for programs as they fill up quickly and you do not want to miss out. Please log on to www.penfieldrec.org to register. Remember - many programs offer a 10% discount for registering online. As you are planning you summer activities, please remember all of the wonderful programs the Penfield Public Library will be offering. From recent discussions with Librarian Bernadette (Bunny) Brinkman, I understand her staff has been busy all winter putting together a wonderful lineup of reading games, theme related craft activities, concerts, shows, story time, and more. I continue to be amazed by the creativity of the programs offered by library staff and the Friends of Penfield Public Library. For more information and details on all library programs go to www.penfieldlibrary.org. Partnerships continue to play a key role in our community’s foundation. I would like to recognize several key community partners who strive to make a great town even better. Our partnership with the Penfield School District under the leadership of Dr. Steve Grimm is strong. Working with Steve and his team is a great pleasure and we continue to look for ways to grow and expand our productive relationship. Additionally, we are striving to expand our relationship with the Webster School District, and I look forward to working

with Superintendent Adele Bovard. Next is our business community that includes the Penfield Business Association and the Penfield Chamber. Many Penfield businesses support the community through donations, programs and sponsorships. Business vitality occurs when we support local business to help with their success, and they, in turn, give back by supporting town, school, and community groups. Lastly, partnerships with service organizations touch many lives in our community. This includes Boy and Girl Scouts, Rotary, Kiwanis, sports clubs, and more. The more we grow and expand partnerships, the stronger our community becomes. A special thank you to all who contribute to these partnerships, you make a difference for everyone! It will be an exciting 2014 with the wide variety of programs offered throughout this brochure. Additionally, we have several major projects planned including the reconstruction of Baird Road and the completion of Motts Lane, as well as several drainage projects and the completion of landscaping around the Community Center. The town board and town staff continue to look for ways to expand the quality of life in Penfield for all residents. We welcome your thoughts and ideas on projects and programs that can be added or expanded to better serve you. I hope to see you at one or more of our programs this summer!

The Young open and honesT plaYers

Picnic by William Inge

June 6 & 7 | 7:30 PM

Penfield Community Center

$10 adults, $7 students

Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1953. The play takes place on Labor Day weekend in the joint backyards of two middle-aged widows. The one house belongs to Flo Owens, who lives there with her two maturing daughters, Madge and Millie, and a boarder who is a spinster school teacher. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly and invalid mother. Into this female atmosphere comes a young man named Hal Carter, who seriously upsets the entire group. Hal is a most interesting character; a child of parents who ignored him, self-conscious of his failings and his position behind the eight ball. Flo is sensitively wary of temptations for her daughters. Madge, bored with being only a beauty, sacrifices her chances for a wealthy marriage for the excitement Hal promises. Her sister, Millie, finds her balance for the first time through the stranger’s brief attention. And the spinster is stirred to make an issue out of the dangling courtship that has brightened her life in a dreary, minor way.

The Most Human Human In 1637, Rene Descartes proclaimed “I think, therefore I am” creating a still famous catch phrase to define what makes us human. In 1950, Alan Turing famously asked: “Can machines think?” and proposed the Turing Test to scientifically answer this question. In 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue machine triumphed over chess master Garry Kasparov, and in 2011 IBM’s Watson computer won the TV game show Jeopardy, but artificial intelligence experts have not yet been able to win the Turing Test. In his book The Most Human Human Brian Christian, the 2009 human winner in the Loebner prize Turing Test, explains “what it is like to be the human half of this competition.” Humans and their machines are irreversibly connected now. This lecture will look in depth at Christian’s thoughts on “what computers teach us about what it means to be alive.”

Mark Twain’s definition of a classic book is “A book which people praise and don’t read.” However this course defines the American classic as a monumental account of the American experience. They are authors and titles that have somehow shocked, de-stabilized or changed the scope of American society. To truly understand the United States of America you must explore its literary tradition. Here is the opportunity to gain some familiarity, as well as review the great works of American writers that you may already know or never had the time to read. Participants are asked to read the essential readings before attending the class as it will lend reference to the selected lectures.

Harriet Beacher Stowe Uncle Tom’s Cabin’s representation of the horrors of slavery in early America deserves an honorable mention in the study of important literature that helped shape the American psyche. We will discuss this text as well as the significant role it had in the course of human history.

Ancient Alien Visitors When? Why? What For? For How Long?Let’s focus on dimensions just beyond our daily reach - worlds of hope, fear and imagination inspired by TV programmers (Twilight Zone), Carl Sagan (Cosmos), and Eric Van Daniken (Ancient Aliens). We will cover the intriguing possibilities and nail down the hard evidence (if there is any) of alien contact and their agenda. A fun mingling of science AND fiction.

The Fox on The Fairway by Ken Ludwig

Directed by Jeff Moon“The Fox On the Fairway” takes audiences on a hilarious romp, which pulls the rug out from underneath the stuffy members of a private country club. Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it’s a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics. A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man’s eternal love affair with golf.

Show dates: May 2 ,3, 9, 10, 16, and 17 at 8:00 PM

All performances will be held at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Road, Penfield.
