director’s message

happy days are here again! With the weather warming up and many trees and plants in bloom, we’ve hit our peak of beauty in Ashland parks.

We love keeping our park patrons in the loop on everything “Parks and Rec.” If you haven’t had a chance to “LIKE” us on Facebook, now is the time. We are so excited about using Facebook to communicate with our many friends and supporters. Please take a moment to “LIKE” us at www.Facebook.com/AshlandParksandRec.

By now you have probably seen or heard about the resurfacing of the Calle Guanajuato, the much-used and loved walkway behind downtown Plaza shops and restaurants. This winter-long project was quite an undertaking. Along with providing a beautiful and safe surface for Calle patrons, visitors and merchants, it also involved the installation of a brand new utility infrastructure for businesses and building occupants. Watch for an upcoming announcement about an opening “rededication” ceremony for the Calle.

I would like to sincerely thank Calle business and property owners for their patience with this long, messy and noisy project. They showed great forbearance in allowing us to do the work to make the walkway better for all of Ashland and her visitors.

Soon we will be breaking ground on Ashland Creek Park. This seven-acre parcel located along Hersey Street will feature a remodel of the community garden, a playground, a path system, and other fine amenities. This will represent the first half of a two-phase construction project that eventually will include a basketball court and shelter area (Learn more on page 22).

Lastly, this will be my final director’s message for Ashland Parks and Recreation. After 33 years in the Parks and Recreation field, with my last ten years in Ashland, it is time for my retirement. I want to especially thank all the citizens of Ashland, current Parks Commission members, and former commissioners for allowing me the opportunity to work on your behalf. I also want to thank all the employees of Ashland Parks and Recreation. Your talents, work ethic, and dedication to Parks and Recreation have inspired me. It has been a blast!

See you in the Parks,

Don Robertson, DirectorAshland Parks & Recreation

Volunteer ProfileFriend & Volunteer of the Nature Center

In 2005, after 45 years of Cali-fornia living, Jane Hall and her husband Bob decided to retire to the Rogue Valley. After selecting the Rogue Valley Manor as their

new home, they packed up their San Jose-based manufactur-ing business and headed north.Bob and Jane first fell in love with southern Oregon in 1985 after visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The Festival became their annual get-away destination and they dreamed of eventually retiring to our area. They’re thrilled to have made their dream a reality!Jane has donated hundreds of volunteer hours to North Mountain Park over the past nine years. Her role as volunteer instructor of school field programs allows her to do something she truly loves: teach science and environmental education to children. Her teaching skills also landed her a volunteer position with the AARP-IRS tax program in Jackson County. Jane’s versatility has lent itself well to additional volunteer roles with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the thrift shop/boutique at the Rogue Valley Manor and with helping to create historical exhibits and kids’ crafts at North Mountain Park’s Bear Creek Salmon Festival every October. Jane most enjoys the staff and fellow volunteers at North Mountain Park. After running an environmental group in the Bay Area for over 25 years, Jane says: “Helping at North Mountain Park is almost like coming home. Working with school kids rejuvenates my ‘Grandma Jane.’ ”When Jane is not volunteering you might find her reading science mysteries or the New York Times, enjoying live the-ater or quilting.

get to know your parks!

— ashland Creek property~developing into a City park!Ashland Parks & Recreation cares for 17 parks in addition to multiple open spaces and park properties within the City of Ashland. One of those properties is the Ashland Creek Property, an undeveloped seven-acre parcel purchased from the Vogel family in 2001. This land will soon become an official City of Ashland park.

The centrally located property, with an address of 23 Hersey Street, is situated between Helman and Oak streets, just one-third of a mile north of Ashland’s downtown Plaza. The new neighborhood and community park will help fulfill the City’s Open Space Plan adopted in 1989 toward preserving and developing land for new park spaces in the City. “Ashland places a high value on its community parks,” said Ashland Parks & Recreation Director Don Robertson. “This is perhaps best demonstrated by the high use of our most well-known park, Lithia Park. Lithia Park was created in the early 1900s as an eight-acre park and has grown to over 90 acres, with well-used trails, a playground, creek access and more. Lithia Park is perhaps over-loved, as its use is extremely high. It is clear that more community parks are needed near the downtown area,” concluded Robertson.

Ashland Creek Park, formerly used as farmland and primarily flat, borders Ashland Creek on the west side and is located within the City’s floodplain corridor; therefore, all future developments of the land will occur in the areas farthest from the creek. The site offers expansive views of Grizzly Peak to the northeast and Mt. Ashland to the south. The property will connect to existing trails and become a hub for recreation, education and gardening. Currently the property hosts a large community garden that will be expanded during the park’s development.

The master plan for the property was developed and adopted in 2005/2006 in close coordination with Parks staff, the public and the Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission. Key discussion points throughout the planning process included environmental, recreational and sustainability goals. The adopted plan not only protects but also restores this important riparian area while allowing neighbors and community members to engage in recreational enjoyments. The property will be developed in two phases:

Phase I: Beginning June, 2014, with proposed completion set for December, 2014. Projected costs: $619,900.

In June, 2013, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) awarded Ashland Parks & Recreation $309,950 for development of the park through their OPRD Local Government Grants Program. Phase I will include:

Expanded/Renovated Community Gardens, Demonstration Gardens, Playground, Half-Court Basketball (possibly be moved to Phase II), Irrigated Multi-use Playing Field Lawn, ADA-Accessible Inner Concrete Trail Loop, ADA-Accessible Parking, Restrooms, Bicycle Parking

Phase II: Will include (timeframe TBD):

Multi-use Shelter / Outdoor Classroom, Two Kiosks, Half-Court Basketball (if not completed in Phase I), Garden Entry Arbors, Picnic Arbor, Outer Decomposed Granite Trail Loop with Associated Benches

Ashland Parks & Recreation will work with a selected contractor to supervise and build the park. “The Ashland Creek Property already contains many of the features desired by the Ashland community, including access to a beautiful creek, a central location, and walking distance to residential neighborhoods, “ stated Ashland Parks Superintendent Bruce Dickens. “The development will only add to the enjoyment of the park land,” he added.

For more information, please visit www.AshlandParksandRec.org, call 541.488.5340 or stop by the Ashland Parks & Recreation office in Lithia Park at 340 S. Pioneer (off Granite Street in the upper park).

green living tips — water-smart landsCaping

In the summer, about 50% of our total water usage is sprinkled on our lawns and gardens. That’s a lot of water!

Have you ever thought about training your landscape? By making simple modifications to your maintenance practices you can actually train your landscape to need less water.

Watering your landscape less frequently, but for longer periods, helps roots grow deeper into the soil. Deep rooted plants will be healthier, require less water, and better withstand stress and disease.

To promote a drought-tolerant landscape with a healthy root system, consider the following practices:

• Avoidwateringtooearlyintheseason.Thiswill“spoil”yourlandscapeandtrainittoexpectexcesswater.

• Waterlessfrequentlyandmoredeeply.Toavoidrunoff, breakupthewateringcyclebyanhoursothateachcyclecan soak in before more water is applied.

Right Plant, Right Place

Want to find the right plant for that sunny, shady, wet or dry area of your landscape? Looking for a low-water-use plant that blooms bright yellow flowers in the summer, can grow well in full sun and will only grow to three feet tall?

The City’s Water-Wise Landscaping website www.ashland.or.us/waterwise helps you save water by recommending the perfect plants for your needs. Once you’re on the website, click on “Plants” at the top of the page, then select “Guided Search” to get started.

The Foundation has a goal in 2014 to refurbish the Butler-Perozzi Fountain in Lithia Park. The fountain, situated on a formal terrace near the sycamore grove, a rose garden and the Butler Memorial Band Shelter, was offered as a memorial gift to the park in 1915 by Gwin Butler and Domingo Perozzi. The fountain was sculpted by Antonio Frilli in Florence, Italy, in the early 1900s and completely restored in the 1980s. Funding is needed for general repairs and vandalism. Due to its prime location within Lithia Park, the fountain is vandalized more frequently than any other area in Lithia Park.

You can help the Foundation reach their restoration goal for the Butler-Perozzi Fountain by making a tax-deductible contribution. Visit www.AshlandParksFoundation.com or call the Ashland Parks & Recreation Department at 541.488.5340 for more information.
