Community loses great servants
FITTING SEND-OFF: Derek Burrell’s life was celebrated by hundreds at Rawhiti Domain.
Derek Burrell
FRASER WALKER-PEARCE
Two tireless workers for the com-munity have passed away.
Trevor McCaughan, 79, and Derek Burrell, 63, were farewelled recently in moving funerals.
Mr McCaughan was a life mem-ber and former president of the Rawhiti Golf Club, and helped the less fortunate through his work with the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
He died on November 12, after a battle with melanoma.
Mr Burrell had many years of service at the New Brighton rugby and cricket clubs.
His funeral was held on the cricket field at Rawhiti Domain.
Golf club treasurer Trevor Morris spoke at Mr McCaughan’s funeral, and said he couldn’t pick a best memory with him.
“He was just a great friendly fella. He was really good to play
golf with, he was just a really good social fella,” he said.
Mr Morris said the club had lost a “really big” part of it.
Mr McCaughan’s son, Steve, said it was not until he wrote the eulogy that he realised the enormous con-tribution he made to others.
“Dad was a fantastic father. He was patient, supportive and most importantly instilled in me the right values to live my life by, while still giving me plenty of room to make my own errors,” he said.
Two days after the funeral, Rawhi-ti Golf Club announced there would be an annual tournament called the McCaughan Trophy in honour of the family’s contributions.
It is fitting therefore that Steve said his best memory of his father was playing golf together.
“Dad played golf with me ever since I was probably aged 11. He was my cricket coach, golf coach, life mentor, everything,” he said.
Mr Burrell passed away on
November 21, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Club president Rob Dixon said: “He was (an) amazing man who influenced so many throughout his life. Any of us that have taken the time to listen to Derek’s words of wisdom over the years know he has helped provide us with the tools we need to be better and stronger.”
In April, Mr Burrell and his wife Eve flew to Hawaii for a holiday, after a fundraiser held by the rugby club. He described it as a “trip of a lifetime.’’

Including an extra pool to the controversial QE II replacement would cost “millions more” in a project that is already $1.7 mil-lion over budget.
City council unit manager rec-reation and sports John Filsell (right) told the Pegasus Post including an extra 35m pool at the Eastern Rec-reation and Sport Centre would add millions more to the cost.
He said the facility is already $1.7 million over the $37 mil-lion budget.
The QE II replacement has been controversial with lobby groups saying the proposed facility with a 25m pool, will be insufficient to meet the needs of the eastern suburbs. They want an extra 35m pool included.
But Mr Filsell said the 25m pool plus the learn-to-swim pool and leisure pool, were more than adequate to meet requirements.
“Not having a 35m pool will not adversely affect the people using them. Every pool needs at least 10 to 20 schools feeding into it to keep it going,” he said.
He said the new facility
“definitely won’t be the old QE II” but a “community swimming pool”.
To deal with the budget blow-out, Mr Filsell said the task is now looking at different build-ing materials.
“What the council have told us is ‘you’re clever people – you can proceed with this (project) but don’t come back to us for money’,” he said.
Dallington resident Emma Jamieson, who recently
submitted a petition to get an extra pool to the city council said the process had not been transparent enough.
“Ratepayers aren’t the enemy here. We should be treated as stakeholders – not the enemy. The city council’s engagement policy describes transparency, but it’s looking more opaque at the moment,” she said.
Mr Filsell said he was confi-dent all debates on the project had been done in the “eyes of
the public” and criticisms the public were blind sided were not true.
He said the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board took out the extra pool from the scope on February 16.
The city council then voted on March 12 to support the deci-sion of the community board.
“I can understand why people are confused or may not under-stand the process, but I don’t agree about blind sided,” he said.
Mr Filsell said that while it’s unfortunate that an extra 35m pool cannot be added to the plans, what people can expect is a “spectacular” facility for the community.
He said the facility, by floor area, will be bigger than Jel-lie Park Recreation and Sport Centre.
Extra pool will cost ‘millions more’
‘ The new facility definitely won’t be the old QE II, but a community swimming pool.’ John Filsell
CALL FOR SCHOOL CROSSING After some near misses with cars, New Brighton resident Cathy Baker said there needs to be a school crossing on Bromley Rd. Ms Baker informed the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board of safety concerns and close calls for children from Bromley School due to the high volume of daily traffic, particularly trucks travelling at high speed. The board requested a report from city council staff on pedestrian crossing options for Bromley School chil-dren. This could include a pedestrian crossing put in place by February 2016.
SHIRLEY RD DETOURShirley Rd commuters travelling eastwards towards The Palms shopping centre will be detoured through Emmet St, Orontes St and Quinns Rd back onto Shirley Rd. Shirley Rd will be one-way eastbound between Petrie St and Emmett St during this time. This detour is likely to be in place for about three months while the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team completes necessary road-works.

Readers respond to articles on the Pages Rd bridge, Eastern Sports and Recreation Centre and the fishing deck.
J Zervos: I’m really concerned that they are going to use the red zone land excuse to completely do away with the bridge, Pages Rd, between the bridge and Anzac Drive, and New Brighton Rd.
These roads are all main ac-cess routes in and out of New Brighton.
New Brighton will die com-pletely if this happens and the people living there will struggle to get help quickly in an emer-gency or leave in a hurry if we have to.
A Trist, Parklands: Here we go again – another excuse to the hold-up of the rebuild of New Brighton bridge.
This project should not be waiting on the future of the red zone land.
Don’t they know that there is a large community that still live in the area using this bridge every day?
Back in 2002, the Bexley Residents Association was told it was going to be started in the next 10 years.
Once again promises have been broken.
People are sick and tired of be-
ing shunted to the bottom of the list for work and projects that are much needed in the area.
This delaying has been going on for well over 40 years and enough is enough.
Are the city council and the Stronger Christchurch Infra-structure Rebuild Team trying to push people out of the east by making living there unbearable?
Sorry it won’t work. T Moyse, New Brighton: I live down here in New Brighton and have been very vocal about the bridge.
This is just another delay by the Stronger Christchurch Infra-structure Rebuild Team to divert funds to another project prob-ably to another part of the city.
New Brighton has always been at the very rear end of the line when it comes to repairs and funding.
When I complained about the dangerous condition of the bridge and the approach, some time later they came down and patched a few holes – no asphalt wasted here.
The bridge is still in a very dangerous condition and with very heavy trucks using it regu-larly, it is only a matter of time before there will be some sort of accident.
An interesting follow-up on this would be how health and safety would view the owners of
the bridge allowing its continued use in this condition.
Who would be liable for dam-age and even injury while travel-ling on this piece of road?
Linda Stewart, Eastern Sports & Recreation Centre – Community Advisory Group member, Burwood Pegasus Community Board member: I am pleased that our ward councillor Glenn Livingstone comments that the QE II replacement proposal needs to be revisited.
The community have raised their concerns about aquatic under-provision. The proposal signed off in the 2012 Annual Plan was for a Jellie Park like (or better than) facility to be built at QE II or similar location with a preliminary budget of $30.1 million.
Specifically that Annual Plan noted a 35m deep pool, a 25m learn-to-Swim/training pool, toddlers, spa, sauna, steam and gym.
Jellie Park consists of one 25m deep pool, one 25m learn-to-
swim/training pool, spa, steam and sauna and toddlers pool and a 50m summer pool, dive well, gym and auxiliaries.
The allocated funds have depreciated against build costs since the 2012 decision and needs to be re-valued by our councillors.
Under the Your Say Your Play feedback process, the proposal offered is a down-sized version of the original.
With only one 25m gradual depth pool, spa, learn-to-swim/training, toddlers, gym and auxiliaries.
The feedback structure was restrictive and misled com-munity by focusing on the $6.5 million grant from Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust for children’s water play equipment.
The city council acknowl-edged a captive market of 60,000 (excluding high school use) and this latest proposal is seriously under-providing for a ward of aquatic users.
L Hunt: I would just like to add my voice to the others concerned with the 25m pool planned for QE II. This is totally inadequate for this area with a catchment of 60,000 people plus two second-ary schools on site.
It will be standing room only. What happened to the 35m pool we were promised as well?
I urge the community board
to reconsider and show some common sense instead of short-changing this community.
T Carbines: I don’t think a fishing deck would be safe as high waves will create a hazard to the people.
The longboard riders donated the most money and they aren’t allowed to use the pier to get past the waves.
They should have a stairway or deck first. It wouldn’t be as much of a hazard as they would only be transiting.
Let’s get the crabbers to pay for the damaged handrails firstly, then with all their income from crabbing they could pay for a side extension to be built on the north side, leaving the south side clear for surfing.
Our beautiful pier is getting wrecked, and people don’t feel safe, shame on the city council for not banning fishing years ago.

GABRIELLE STUARTFreedom camping will be banned in parts of New Brighton this week, but now there are fears the problem will be trans-ferred across to Sumner.
The city council on Thursday approved the Freedom Camping Bylaw that will be in place as of tomorrow.
This means there is no free-dom camping allowed on the North and South Ramps on Ma-rine Parade.
If campers break the rules, they could be fined $200.
The area was plagued with the issues after campers overtook a city council-owned Beresford St car park in New Brighton earlier this year. Rubbish, alcohol-fuelled behaviour and noise were amongst the complaints.
But now there are fears Sum-ner could become the new spot for freedom campers this sum-mer, because of the ban.
City councillor Yani Johanson (above) raised concerns the ban could reignite issues in Sumner.
Speaking to the city coun-cil on Thursday, Cr Johanson asked why Sumner had not been included on the list of banned areas.
“You’ve got Sumner, which has historically had numerous complaints around freedom camping, and I struggle to un-derstand, and I personally would feel uncomfortable, if we get a review in two years and we get a huge influx of people going into Sumner.”
But Cr Andrew Turner said he had legal advice that a ban in Sumner might not be possible.
Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club president Murray Johnson said there had been problems in the past with large numbers of freedom campers using the club car park.
He said that had eased up over the last couple of years, as no camping signs had been put up and the city council had actively moved people on.
Campers last summer were rare, and usually well behaved, he said.
“I certainly wouldn’t want to bring the law down very hard on the few who do now because most of them are pretty good and visitors are a valuable part of our economy here.”
But if large numbers arrived it could cause problems for the club, he said.
Under the bylaw, all freedom camping is banned in the
central city and in specific areas including New Brighton and Akaroa.
Camping in a self-contained vehicle with an on-board toilet is allowed in most other areas.
Freedom camping in any ve-hicle is allowed for two to five days in set areas in Addington, Ferrymead, and parts of Banks Peninsula.
Ban for parts of New Brighton
BANNED: Freedom camping on the North and South Ramp will be banned as of tomorrow.
Fears over ban could reignite issues for Sumner
PROBLEM: The Beresford St car park where freedom campers set up earlier this year creating havoc for neighbours. The city council put up a no camping sign.

One of their UNESCO proj-ects this year is to create a mural that focuses on cultural similari-ties and differences.
The Japanese school, Otogawa Elementary, is located in Oka-zaki City, which is in the centre
of Japan’s biggest island, Honshu.
About 30 pupils in the fifth grade (10 to 11-years-old) from Otogawa are involved with the project.
St James deputy prin-cipal Judy Parry said pupils had been talking online to collabo-rate on the project.
“We have been emailing each other – sending our ideas. We also tried a Skype conversation where St James and Selwyn House sang songs and did a lot of sign language due to the
language barrier,” she said.
The conversation was helped by one of the Selwyn House pu-pils who knew enough Japanese to help translate parts of the Skype call.

Coastguard volunteer Phil Walker showed the kids the boats and explained how to be safe while having fun in the water. His daughter Amelia, attends the school. Two school support work-ers from the eastern suburbs, who work in schools to help ease distress among children after the February 2011 earth-quakes, have won leadership awards.
Burwood’s Sophie King and colleague Kate Hermansen of Shirley, who work for Kiwi Can, received awards in rec-ognition of their work at the Foundation for Youth Devel-opment’s Excellence Awards.
The duo won the Kiwi Can Outstanding Leader Award as an acknowledgement of the difference they are making to the lives of young people.
Kiwi Can is a school support
service working with primary-aged children.
At the awards ceremony held at Government House, Auckland, on Wednesday the judges said both worked tire-lessly to bring stability back to classrooms after the earth-quakes.
They have worked with about 650 children a week – one of the highest workloads for Kiwi Can in the country.
During the evening, 27 awards were handed out.
The occasion also marked 20 years since the Foundation for Youth Development was founded by mountaineer and adventurer, Graeme Dingle.
The foundation’s chief ex-ecutive officer Marion Short said it was proud of all award recipients.
“Their progress and achieve-ments are outstanding and great examples of the differ-ence our programmes can make to the lives of our young people.”

Jasmine McBeth was a HITO Apprentice of the Year who showed dedication, passion, and com-mitment to hairdressing and apprenticeship train-ing, in spite of struggling with cancer.
Ms McKay won the $3750 scholarship and a pair of brand new custom-made scissors.
HITO chief executive Erica Cumming said it was amazing to come together every year and celebrate the success in hair and beauty.
“It’s fantastic to see such commitment to excel-lence in our industries. The standard of entries only gets higher every year,” she said.

How does it feel to be the prin-cipal of a school that doesn’t exist yet?
It’s an exciting opportunity to build something from scratch and create what we hope will be a very successful learning community in Aranui. While the building is incomplete, the plans have been, and continue to be, scrutinised and any changes we are able to make to support more effective learning, are being made.
And who will be joining you at Haeata? Have you met them and what do you think of your new colleagues?
We have appointed three directors of learning at this stage and are advertising for a fourth. We obviously have complete faith in their ability to lead this new venture. They bring a fabulous mixture of local knowledge and experience from further afield. We hope
to add further breadth to that expertise with the fourth appointment.
What are you most look-ing forward to about the new school?
The ability to create something new and tailored for a commu-nity that deserves the highest quality of education. Working with new colleagues from Early Childhood to Adult Education and everything in between. Defining success for our learners and making that real for them.
Most dreading? Nothing to dread – just great
opportunities.Talk to me about your fam-
ily.Married to Jane and have three
daughters – Grace, 16, Hannah, 13, and Ruby, 10.
Can working with children all day be frustrating?
Kids are kids and at times are
frustrating. I would not be in this game if I didn’t enjoy working with and for them. Nothing more satisfying than watching kids succeed at learning and creating conditions and a culture for that to happen.
And correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re a graduate of the University of Otago? What did you study and for how long?
I completed a Bachelor of Physical Education and Bach-
elor of Science (Microbiology) through Otago Uni. Also a Diploma of Teaching through Auckland College of Education and have last year, begun some post graduate study through Canterbury University.

CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ CHOIR
The Christchurch Boys’ Choir was established in 1985 by singing teacher Clifton Cook. Since then, nearly 500 Christ-church boys have been a part of it – including well-known New Zealand opera singer Jared Holt and former Crusader and former All Black Andy Ellis.
The club will celebrate its 30th birthday with a gala style concert on December 5 at St Margaret’s College. The September 2010 earthquake destroyed the choir’s rehearsal space at the Oxford Tce Baptist Church, and also led to the can-cellation of the 25th anniversary
celebrations. Since 1985, the choir has
toured within New Zealand and overseas to Japan and Austra-lia, and has performed with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as well as the world-renowned Vienna Boys’ Choir. Earlier this year members performed at the opening event for the ICC Cricket World Cup in Christchurch.

NEW BRIGHTON RUGBY CLUB
The New Brighton Rugby Club kicked off its summer academy
for promising young players on Wednesday, November 18 at Rawhiti Domain
This year it has integrated play-ers from its division 1 team. Coaches at these sessions include Canterbury B coach Wayne Bur-leigh; Steve Crotty, the former New Brighton division 1 player and coach, and father of basket-baller Shea and rugby players Luke and All black Ryan; former Japanese international and New Brighton player Alisi Tupuailei; and former All Black Ben Blair.
The club had a great 2015 season with all five men’s teams finishing on the top five of their competitions, a statistic un-matched by any other club.
The club’s teams have also
gained some new quality coaches joining in the 2016 season, ensur-ing New Brighton Rugby Club firmly keeps its place near the top of the tree when it comes to rugby clubs in Canterbury.NEW BRIGHTON SURFLIFE SAVING CLUB
Summer has started – it’s time to bring out the bathing suits and head to the beach. The New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club has commenced running its voluntary patrols and it will continue to run every weekend until March.
The patrolled hours of our beach is Saturdays, 1-5pm, and Sundays 11am-5pm. It would like to remind all people to be safe and remember to swim between
the flags. Trained lifeguards put the flags in the safest area to swim and advise people never to swim alone and when taking young ones to the beach, to stay with them at all times.
When heading to the beach don’t forget sunscreen and water to stay hydrated. If you, your friends, family or children have ever been interested in surf lifesaving either as a volunteer or to partake in the sport, talk to someone in the club about what they have to offer you.
Age is no barrier as we have sporting opportunities from ju-niors to masters. Visit the club on weekends at 185 Marine Parade, next to the car park for any fur-ther information.

The longer hours will be extremely handy for customers who now have the opportunity to drop their vehicles in for repairs
before heading to work and can pick them
up at the end of the working day.Brendon and Jo-ann Stevens took over
the business eight years ago. He had worked for the previous owner for five years and purchased the service station when he retired.
Since then, Brendon and his team have been very busy looking after the motoring needs of the people of Burnham and surrounding areas. This includes customers who come from Rolleston, Darfield, Leeston and West Melton, and some of their clientele have been with the business since it began operating 30 years ago.
The workshop at Burnham Auto Services is an extremely busy place. The two full-time mechanics and one part-timer cover all mechanical needs in an efficient, reliable and honest manner, which might explain why customers keep coming back.
“We only repair what needs to be done, and when working on a vehicle always contact the owner, to advise what repairs are needed and the likely cost of those repairs, and ensure they’re happy for us to go ahead,” advises Brendon.
They have recently purchased another scanner, which gives them the technology to accurately diagnose and maintain late model vehicles. To celebrate, Burnham Auto Services is offering a vehicle scan for the special price of only $30, from now until Christmas.
As a Challenge service station, Burnham Auto Services provides a personal full forecourt service for petrol and diesel. They have LPG swap a bottle for gas and sell a range of products in the shop. This includes confectionary, coffees, automotive parts and more. In addition, the team at Burnham Auto Services sell, fit and balance Kumho and Maxxis tyres.
There are also changes in the wind for
Burnham Auto Services, with a wider selection of items planned for the shop. Following on from the recent Lincoln, Tai Tapu and Darfield Challenge renovations, Burnham Motors Challenge upgrade is due within the next six months. This will result in increased fuel storage capacity and a facelift as part of Challenge’s re-imaging so it is no wonder that Brendon and his team are pretty excited.
Burnham Auto Services is located just behind the Burnham Military Camp at 36 Russell Road, Burnham. Phone 03 347 6607, and they will be open over the holiday break.
LONGER HOURS OF TRADING FOR

The trading hours of Burnham Auto Services have just been extended. They are now open 12 hours a day, from 7am in

Shirley Boys’ High School has had success at the Canterbury Sec-ondary Schools junior tennis championships.
Year 9 student Reece Falck was runner up in the year 9 singles com-petition.
The competition was held at Wilding Park on November 24-25.
Falck lost out in in a tie breaker in the final to Jamie Garbett from The Cathedral Grammar School.
Falck then combined with Levi McNabb to win the year 10 doubles title against St Bede’s College.
The players had to deal with high winds and the warm weather, with the final day of play moved to the indoor courts.
RUNNER UP: Reece Falck finished second in the year 9 singles event at the Canterbury Secondary Schools junior tennis tournament.
EYE ON THE BALL: Levi McNabb (left) in action. He teamed up with Falck to win the year 10 doubles title.
Wind hampers tennis
TEAMWORK: Aranui High School won the South Island secondary schools junior volleyball tournament. They beat Shirley Boys’ High in the final, winning two sets to one. The tournament was held over November 23-26 at Pioneer Stadium.
Try telling the New Brigh-ton Rugby Club it is the off-season.
The club kicked off their summer academy for promising players on November 18, and have called on former players and coaches to work with the club’s future stars.
Former All Black and Canterbury representative Ben Blair as well as for-mer Japanese international and former New Brighton player Alisi Tupuailei have
both given time to run ses-sions at the academy.
For the academy this year, the decision was made to include players from their division one side as a way of continuing the growth of the young players.
Rugby development of-ficer Roddy Butt said the young guys involved can learn a lot from ‘rubbing shoulders’ with the senior guys.
“Our div one guys are
really good at passing on knowledge and are happy to help our young guys at the club,” he said.
The club had a good 2015 season, with all five of the men’s teams making the top five in their respec-tive competitions.
The final session is to be held on December 2, before the players involved start their individual conditioning prior to pre-season training in January.

Muscle People Physiotherapy clinics in the Central City and Bishopdale
[Edition datE]2
Good running technique will make your runs feel less tiring, reduce your risk of injury, and ultimately
be more enjoyable. Muscle People Physiotherapists specialise in assessing and improving running technique whether you are a competitive runner or just running for fun.
Start getting better now with these basic tips:
POSTURE• Keep your head straight
Look straight ahead of you, about 30-40 metres out in front and avoid looking down at your feet. Looking down will create tension in your neck and shoulders.• Shoulders back and down
Your shoulders should be back and down not up by your ears. Keep them relaxed and avoid tensing them. Don’t hunch over as this restricts breathing.• Keep your elbows at 90 degreesYour elbows should be bent at a 90 degree angle. Try to swing your arms forward and back, not across your body. This arm movement helps to propel you forward. Your hands should be relaxed, but don’t let them flop. Tight hands can cause tension all the way up to the back and shoulders.• Solid coreFocus on keeping your core (trunk)
firm, though not rigid, and straight and your hips and shoulders level and relaxed. Keeping this position in your hips can help prevent low back and hip pain.
FOOT STRIKE AND LEG POSITION• Don’t strike the ground too heavilyGood running is light and quiet. You should land in the middle of your foot with a slightly bent knee. Whatever your weight, your feet should not slap loudly as they hit the ground. Light steps are more efficient and cause less stress to the body and landing on the middle of your foot is the safest way to land for most recreational runners.
That’s the basics but there’s always more we can do to help. Try these:RUNFIT – The technical edgeMuscle People Physiotherapy & YMCA gym have a running group in Hagley Park – RunFit, led by a Physiotherapist and Canterbury competitive runner, and a Personal Trainer from the YMCA gym. RunFit focuses on running technique which is vital to improving speed, reducing injuries and making running more enjoyable for both regular runners and the beginner. RunFit is ideal for regular runners who are looking to challenge themselves, as well as the beginning runner who wants to start with good technique and the guidance of professionals.
Running should be as easy as putting one foot in front of the other right? Anyone can run, but having good technique can make it feel so much easier.

Right now, tonight, in our city, there are parents with children, single men and women, entire families with nowhere to call home, sleeping in garages, with friends or family in crowded conditions and when these options run out, sleeping in cars.
This happens because there is a lack of emergency housing in Christchurch, said Citizens Advice Bureau Christchurch chairman Neil Lancaster.
“There is a limited supply of emergency housing in Christchurch. There is not enough to meet the need in our community. Especially, places that can accommodate families and single people who need a place to live short term, along with support to get them back on their feet and settled into permanent housing,” said Mr Lancaster.
Citizens Advice Bureau is well-placed to comment on social issues as it assists clients each year with more than 500,000 inquiries nationally.
Citizens Advice Bureau Christchurch has 14,290 inquiries each year and it often sees clients in desperate situations. They are heart-breaking cases, especially
where children are involved.“They come to us as a last resort
having already tried all other options available to them, often referred to us by Government agencies. By this stage they are upset and very worried about where they will sleep that night” said manager Mollie Howarth.
The number of inquiries from people needing emergency housing are increasing, up by 31 per cent from last year, which makes the lack of emergency accommodation in Christchurch all the more worrying.
“There are very few options to offer these people. We can suggest hostels, boarding houses, local Marae or camping grounds but some of these are beyond their means and not suitable for families with children,” said Ms Howarth.
A concerted community effort involving local and central government working with community groups is needed to tackle this problem in Christchurch.

THE FLAME FILES BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER
I missed writing the Flame Files last week. The reason being I was part of the 35,000 people who watched Fleetwood Mac in Dunedin.
Both the show and the venue were fabulous but it did cross my mind that it is reassuring to be in a country where that num-ber of people can congregate without the fear of an extremist spreading mayhem. We take it for granted but in some parts of
the world the reality is differ-ent. And that is terrifying in itself.
The large fire at Brian Ford Engineering on Tuesday night resulted in one of our newest firefighters being treated in hospital, he was released the next morning. Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery.
This is just a reminder that amongst the challenge and thrill of fighting a large and fully involved fire, what we are asking our crews to do is inherently dangerous. We have equipment and procedures to
minimise the risk but it always remains.
Our duckling affair contin-ues. And I know the reports are repetitive. But one in Marsh-lands on Thursday last week took my fancy.
Mother duck was concertedly creating a traffic hazard while the ducklings were deep in a drain. The final radio report stated four very dirty firefight-ers had emerged with four ducklings. That’s above and beyond. But I wouldn’t expect anything different. Well done the St Albans crew.

There’s not a lot of product or competition in New Zealand’s upmarket mid-size hatchback/mini-SUV market.
Yes, there are a smattering of mainstream models, but if you have a few extra dollars to spend and want something just a lit-tle exotic you don’t have a lot of choice, and most of what is available comes out of Germany.
Yet, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class could still be deemed to be affordable. The four-model range here starts at $53,200 and ends at $71,900 for the 4Matic B 250 which this evaluation focuses on.
As its nomenclature suggests, the B 250 is a four-wheel-drive version; however, the rest of the range is just front-wheel-drive only, while amongst those there are two 1.6-litre petrol powered models and a 2.2-litre diesel. The B 250 has a 2-litre turbo-charged petrol engine, and it is a unit which is used widely through Mercedes-Benz product.
I’ve become very familiar with this engine and I’ve often remarked that it is a good com-bination of available power and the economy we would expect from today’s modern engine.
Just like in other applications, the 1991cc unit is rated with 155kW with 350Nm of torque available at between 1250rpm and 4000rpm. If you take into account that peak power arrives at just 5500rpm, there is a solid flow of energy which works almost silently as the engine hauls up and down the rev band.
That type of refinement is why many buyers choose upmarket models, the engineering which goes into a high class product is sophisticated, and it shows with its effortless manner and smooth operation.
Drive is directed through a seven-speed dual clutch gear-box. Effectively it works like a traditional automatic, and with just two pedals you drive it as such. There are also steering wheel-mounted paddles which can be used to initiate changes.
The beauty of DCT transmis-sion are the quick, sharp gear-shifts, especially under load, the flick of the tachometer is often the only way the driver can sense ratio change. And the gearing is perfectly balanced between what is expected for acceleration and fuel economy. Some of the important fig-ures are a 6.7sec time to make 100km/h from a standstill and a 6.8-litre per 100km (41mpg) combined cycle fuel usage aver-age, these figures courtesy of Mercedes-Benz.
During my testing time the trip computer was constantly list-ing around 8l/100km (35mpg) with an instantaneous figure of around 7l/100km (40mpg) show-ing at a steady 100km/h (engine speed 1800rpm). These figures sit well with Mercedes-Benz’s claims and the other 2-litre cars
I’ve evaluated recently out of the same stable.
I took the test car on my usual high country loop between Canterbury’s two main river gorges. The B 250 is a tidy highway cruiser, it travels qui-etly and feels well secured to the road. A lot of the latter is attributable to the positive com-munication that four-wheel-drive offers, the B 250 feels tight on the road and steers with preci-sion when corners are presented.
Because of the inclusion of four-wheel-drive, an owner could be mistaken for thinking it is a quasi-SUV, but with just 134mm of ground clearance that isn‘t the case. Yet the four-wheel-drive has benefits in low grip conditions, and when I was testing the weather was filthy. That being the case, I didn’t push the test car hard, but given
my experience with the driveline in other models I can report that it is a system which promotes an informative driving feel.
Inside, the B 250 gets the usual box of tricks which makes a Mercedes-Benz such a desir-able purchase, especially for safety where a full suite of kit is included.
And it also has the benefit of clever design. There’s no doubt-ing its hatchback/SUV looks, but that lends itself to a spacious, comfortable interior environ-ment and a 488-litre luggage carrying capacity (1547-litres with the rear seats folded).
Mercedes-Benz has just given the B-Class a bit of a facelift, it is a timely refresh for the series given that BMW’s Active Tourer has just landed and its concept is very similar.
Nevertheless, for the Mercedes-Benz faithful who need practicality and function-ality into their purchase, the B-Class fills that void. You also get a whole lot of prestige with-in the package.
Price: Mercedes-Benz B 250, $71,900.
Dimensions: Length,4393mm; width, 2010mm; height, 1562mm.
Configuration: Four-cylinder transverse, four-wheel-drive, 1991cc, 155kW, 350Nm, seven-speed automatic.
Performance: 0-100km/h, 6.7sec.

Magical Marcella.....owners have purchased4 Marcella Gardens, Aidanfield 3 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 1 living room | 2 dining rooms | 2-car garage | Listing #: PI39779
If you’re looking for a great house and a great buy, then look no further.
Perfect for both young executives and maybe even retirees, you can take
confidence in the TC2 land and freehold title of 450m2. The house I would describe as a “sun trap” and features three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, with en suite and walk-in robe off the master. There are two living areas to enjoy, opening onto a private outdoor entertaining area – great for the summer barbecues. Add to this the double internal access garage and solid brick construction, this great home should
tick all the boxes on your list. Once again, don’t forget that
our vendors have purchased and need this sold yesterday!
Open Home dates: Saturday, November 28, 1pm to 1.30pm; Sunday, November 29, 1pm to 1.30pm; Saturday, December 5, 1pm to 1.30pm; and Sunday, December 6, 1pm to 1.30pm.
See you at the open home or before for a private viewing, contact Cameron Bailey of Harcourts Gold Papanui (Licensed Agent REAA 2008) on 352 6166 or mobile 027 555 7079.

TRIBUTE TO PROMINENTLEADING JAZZMEN
Doug Caldwell
Doug Kelly
Two legends of the Christchurch Big Band scene, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, will be celebrated in a tribute concert to their music in the best way possible.
The Garden City Big Band will play original music and arrangements by the two Dougs from an era when swing music and big band jazz were celebrated on the airwaves and the dance halls of New Zealand.
Now both over 80 years old, Doug Kelly and Doug Caldwell, along with musical director Lana Law have worked with the Garden City Big Band to bring their music to life. Originals like 'Wakatipu Environs', 'Thanks Bill' and 'Douglas Delight' sit along tasty workings of well known songs 'Days of Wine and Roses','Scrapple from the Apple', and even 'Jeepers Creepers'.
Established Jazz Diva and Doug Kelly's granddaughter, Kate Taylor joins the band on vocals.
