The New Brighton Returned Services Association finally have a glimpse of what their new home will look like.

Last week the Pegasus Post re-ported that the RSA’s new home at the New Brighton Bowling Club is getting $250,000 of ex-tensions.

Now, the model of how it will look can be revealed.

The extensions were created by Auckland University archi-tecture graduate Young Hun Kim.

New Brighton RSA president, Bill Lochrie said the club was excited about the new exten-sions.

“We held a special meeting concerning this, and the outcome was a unanimous decision for this to go ahead.”

The RSA’s previous location on New Brighton Rd was damaged beyond repair in the February 2011 earth- quake and subsequently demolished.

Mr Lochrie said that the club is looking forward to moving

on from the quakes, and moving into their new home on Mafek-ing St.

New Brighton Bowling club opened on Saturday, July 18, 1914, during the Great War.

The parish plans to share a concept plan with the community at an open day in the church hall on the corner of Union and Collingwood Streets on Wednesday, October 21, from 3pm to 7pm.

The Pegasus Post Facebook page asked if freedom camping should be banned. Readers replied:

Jo Zervos - “Yes, they should be banned.”

CJ Mills - “They have a right like everyone else has in the world to travel and (have) fun , just be self contained and don’t litter (rubbish, noise, toileting ... etc)”

Chessa Crow - “I am a freedom camper myself so don’t believe in a blanket ban. I believe in more toilets and better litter bins and areas provided for safe and tidy camping, not caravan parks. I live in Brighton and can’t stand walking my dog in the dunes and have him scoffing down human poop!!!! Seeing human faeces and toilet paper piles and dumped rubbish along the dunes and road make me crazy when we have six public toilet facilities along the beachfront. It is disgraceful and infuriating. I so wish people

could be more respectful of our space and place. I think there should be areas opened up in the newly transformed parkland in the red zone along the Avon for contained and maintained ‘freedom’ camping.”

Sue Smith - “I support the comments of Chessa. I feel that the travellers camping in Brighton on the whole are respectful of our area/home.”

Fraser Walker-Pearce – Pegasus Post reporter

I think I might have stumbled across a solution that would give graduating high school kids a taste of the workforce while they’re still at school.

It was during a short stint in Tauranga two years ago where I encountered the idea of a ‘career day’ run by the high school’s student council.

A specific day each term would be determined, where all students in a year group were given the day off school to find work. It didn’t matter what the work was, it just had to be work.

I heard of kids who helped out their dad with paperwork in the office, students who had arranged one day’s work at the local McDonalds, and even one

kid who did chores around the house for six hours to earn a bit of cash.

If they “couldn’t find any work,” the school catered for that too. It set up a working bee on career day, which allowed students to earn money by help-ing out with the painting of a school building, or clean the school oval for a few hours.

The next day, school resumed as normal, and students were expected to front up with $20 of their hard earned dough, which would be donated to the student council.

It was compulsory; no one was allowed to return with nothing.

The student council would then meet to decide what that money should be used for, as a reward for the year group.

At the time, the students (in-cluding myself) hated it. But the more I thought about it, the more I loved the idea.

For one, it taught me things that school can’t teach – like what an employer will look for in a candidate, preparation for an interview, and an employer’s expectations on the job.

And at the end of the day, you actually get a bit of money if you’ve done a good job.

Since being in Christchurch I haven’t heard or seen of career day since.

Maybe it’s just a North Island thing, but it shouldn’t be. It should be mandatory at high schools across New Zealand.

TEAMWORK: A career day could be an opportunity for high school-aged students to find a job they love.

KYLE KNOWLES

The new $190,000 Clare Park playground, that was supposed to open in June, has finally been completed.

City council assets and networks unit manager Chris Gregory said initially there was a delay in the delivery of some of the play equipment which held the project up.

Originally planned to be com-pleted in June, the playground is now officially open to the public.

The total cost of the play-ground was $193,923.

The previous playground, which was installed in the late 1970’s, had passed its expected lifespan of 25 years.

New playground equipment is now installed so it complies with the current New Zealand playground standards.

The new playground also has a slightly different location to the original, for safety reasons.

This new site is closer to the southern end of the car park and lies adjacent to the driveway.

This position is more visible from the main park and allows for better casual surveillance from the main park, sports fields, club rooms and QE II Drive in the distance.

Two other locations were considered but were not suitable due to adjacent waterways or busy noisy intersections.

our PEOPLE Viviana Zanetti

So Viviana, I’ve heard that you have a PhD in law. Is that true? Where did you go to study for that?

Yes, that’s right, it’s in con-stitutional law. After I took my degree in law, I had an intern-ship in London, then realised I was interested in human rights. I went back to Italy and won a scholarship from the Italian government. So those studies were focused on criminal court. I spent three years working on the scholarship, and then worked for another four years at the University of Ferrara, but they were all temporary jobs. My partner and I always wanted to travel, to face some new chal-lenges, and we read a lot about New Zealand.

That’s an interesting educa-

tion! Why did you move away from Italy?

Both of our jobs were short term, and we thought it would be easier to move to an English speaking country, especially as we could both speak pretty good English. My partner is a geolo-gist and got a job offer in Christ-

church, and so we settled two years ago. So he’s happy with his job, and his colleagues. I’m struggling a little bit more, pos-sibly because my background is not as interesting as others’ in Canterbury. Everything I published for my PhD was in Italian, so that didn’t help either.

What are you doing now that you’re here in New Brigh-ton?

We rented a house in New Brighton because we thought it would be a good idea to get involved in a community, so I got involved in the museum, and I just love it. We’ve improved it

(the museum) quite a lot since we arrived, and we’re trying to make it more technologically advanced. There are so many old photos and documents; it would be a shame to lose everything. So I’m trying to create some on-line storage for all of those cool things, on the Google Drive and the Cloud. We want to start a lot of new projects as well. At the moment, we’re organizing a big launch for the 1st of November, to raise funds for the museum. We’re really excited for that, and we hope to have a pretty big reply from the people.

And you grew up in Italy, too. Where, and for how long?

Yes, I did, in a little village near Venice. I had a very happy and quiet life, then I moved to Ferrara for University and then to London for an internship. Then I moved back to Italy, to Rome. After that, I did a one year masters course in interna-tional military studies.

Why did you choose New Zealand of all places?

Because of our job situations, we were very curious about New Zealand and new places around the world. I always say that we have only one life and we would like to enjoy it the best.

We wanted to do something different and challenging, and it doesn’t get more challenging than going to New Zealand, on the op-posite side of the world. We couldn’t really go more far away from Italy if we tried. In the future if we decide to go back or move around, we will always be moving closer to home. So we started as far away from home as we could. Why do you think Christ-church is so special?

Because Christchurch is so multicultural now, there are kiwis and Maori people obviously, but there are lots of people from all over the world too. In Italy there are mainly just lots of people coming from places like north Africa especially. And because of the Italian cul-ture, it’s more difficult to get involved in their lives. When you have spent your whole life in a place, you already have friends and family – in a new place you have to make your own way and make your own friends.

Are you married to your partner?

No I’m not. My partner and I have been together for 15 years now. So quite a long time! (laughs) We first dated at university, in our first year on separate courses. We were friends for five years before that though. We started dating in 2000.

Are you glad that you made the move? What does your partner think?

Yes, I’m very happy. I would like to have a job, but that’s the only part of the whole experience that hasn’t been totally success-ful for me. Getting involved with people from different cultures is so fun, and I’ve made so many friends. It’s a great opportunity for my partner, and he’s helping his company a lot. He’s very happy about everything too.

Most Italians are big football fans, have you been watching Italy in the Rugby World Cup?

No, unfortunately we haven’t been able to find a place showing the games

for Italy. At home, we don’t have Sky (TV) for that.

What about the All Blacks?

We’ve tried to follow the All Blacks and keep up with them whenever we can. We’ve been a couple of times to watch the rugby here in Christchurch. The first was a game played by the Crusaders and then a game with Canterbury. We’re so used to watching the Italian football, where the atmosphere is often so violent; so were very surprised to see so many families with children. In last year’s game, we saw someone throw a bottle of beer onto the field, and everyone in the crowd got very angry at him which was really good to see. If that happened in Italian football, people wouldn’t really be too bothered.

Do you have a prediction for who will win the World Cup?

If I was to make a predic-tion, it’s got to be the All Blacks will win.

The Rawhiti School Parent Teacher Association is calling for people to plunge into their pockets for a good cause.

The PTA has set up a givealittle page with the hopes of raising the $20,000 needed to repair Rawhiti’s badly damaged pool.

The 25m long pool, based at Rawhiti’s Leaver Tce site, was built in the 1940s, and has leaked thousands of litres of water over the course of the past few years.

Rawhiti PTA co chairperson, Louise Wedlake said enough is enough.

“It’s important that we build a nice pool for the kids in the east to learn how to swim. I’m pas-sionate to get the kids to learn how to swim. It’s absolutely es-

sential and vital. It is something that the kids must do in a safe environment,” she said.

The givealittle page states that even with funds from outside of

the PTA, the quote for the pool’s repairs means they need to ask for the help of the public.

“(The repairs) carry a signifi-cant cost and combined with sup-

port from the Board of Trustees, Rawhiti PTA is fundraising to cover the shortfall of these pool improvements, approximately $20,000 in the next 12 months.”

A 1.2 tonne hydro-demolition robot that blasts through con-crete has paid Linwood North School a visit on the hunt for a new name.

The robot, operated by Mc-Connell Dowell contractors, is capable of cutting through sol-ids like concrete, using special-ist water jets.

The workers ran a competi-tion for the pupils to create the best name for the hydro-demoli-tion robot.

There were a lot of sug-gestions and entries from the pupils, but the winning entry was submitted by 5 year-old Micheal Hotter, from Room 1,

who wanted to call the robot Geo.

School principal Amy Collins said: “They brought the robot along to school to show us how it works and what it looks like. The students at Linwood North thought the robot was very clever.”

The concrete smashing robot is powered by a 283kW power pack and is capable of using up to 180 litres of water per minute, with a water pressure of up to 40,000psi.

Mrs Collins said the com-pany in charge of Geo awarded Micheal with the prize for such a creative name.

“Micheal got two lovely Lego kits. One was a truck and the other was a loader.”

Shirley Boys’ High School li-brary has been demolished after it was severely damaged by the February 2011 earthquake.

The school library, which was built in 1957, took just over a

week to deconstruct. After the February 2011 earth-

quake the library was “rendered uninhabitable”.

It has been closed since and the school re-homed its library in another block.

Shirley Boys’ High School publicist Colin Amodeo said

on the day of the earthquake, liquefaction got into the library and the bookshelves were tipped over.

He said the liquefaction was so bad, students had to wade through the library on office chairs to get teachers’ belong-ings.

Waitakiri School pupils participated in the worldwide ShakeOut campaign last week, held to raise awareness of the right actions to take before, during and after an earth-quake. In Christ-church, 70,000 people took part in the drill.

FINAL CHAPTER: The Shirley Boys’ High library was demolished last week, and porta-coms placed on the construction site.

An Aranui High School student has become the 300th person to gain their restricted licence through the Community Driver Mentor Programme (CDMP).

Designed to help young drivers overcome obstacles that prevent them from gaining their restrict-ed licence, the CDMP, run by the NZ Transport Agency provides access to suitable vehicles, and experienced drivers to help men-tor the drivers.

Aranui student Isaac Hough-ton-Pawa, was the 300th driver to pass his restricted, with help from the programme.

Mr Houghton-Pawa said the

programme helped him gain his licence.

“I’m so happy and relieved to

have passed. The programme has made an unbelievable difference.

“I now have the knowledge and

skills to make good, wise choices. I’m a much safer driver,” he said.

Volunteer mentor drivers partner with the young learners, spending 30 hours with them to foster positive driving habits.

In 2014, the Ministry of Trans-port produced a Young Driver report that showed drivers aged 15-24 were over represented in all types of vehicle crashes.

The CDMP helps to reduce crash rates by coaching young drivers to use positive driving habits.

Chevron NZ General Man-ager and Hyundai support the programme with their of their dealers, including Gary Cockram Hyundai in Christchurch.

Two Shirley Boys’ High School students carved up at the Na-tional Scholastic Surf Champs over the holidays.

Longboarders Liam Wright and Zac van Eekelen were part of the Canterbury team, made up of 12 surfers, that competed in Gisborne over the holidays.

The contest scored a good break of waves and weather just one week after the dramat-ic floods that hit the Gisborne region.

Liam competed in the un-

der-16 boys’ section, and placed fifth overall. While Zac placed seventh in the under-14 section.

About 120 of the country’s top school aged surfers hit the Gisborne beaches at the event.

The Canterbury team man-aged to secure six semi-final placings, coming fifth out of the 12 competing teams.

St Bede’s College student Seb Johnson placed the best out of the Canterbury team, when he took home a silver medal in the longboarding event, which boosted the team’s ratings.

South New Brighton School has had a run of sporting success.

Pupil McKenna Bowden (left) was crowned national floor cham-pion at the recent New Zealand National GymSports Champion-ships competition, held recently.

McKenna was also in the Canter-bury team that placed first overall.

FLAME FILES

MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Somebody stole a motor scooter in Domain Tce in Spreydon last Thursday.

They probably pushed it along the road until they got to the Coronation Hall.

This is a hall with plenty of history in the area. It’s still utilised by a softball club and appears to be quite a wee social hub.

They won’t be using it for a while. That’s because our motor-cycle thief set the machine on fire and left it leaning against the Coronation Hall.

The walls are wooden weatherboard. They caught on fire which then spread into the roof space. The hall is quite badly damaged and will take months to repair.

The question is Why? Why would the offender do this? If you can supply any logical reason then you’re cleverer than I am.

Fires starting from discarded cigarettes are much less prevalent than many people believe. But at this time of year they do occur here because of the Canterbury nor’wester.

This week we saw two

examples, one on the Main South Rd, Hornby, and the second on Russley Rd where cigarettes thrown from a car window have set fire to the bark or foliage on a central traffic island.

If you’re a driving smoker please, please use the car ashtray.

Ducklings are still about, still getting stuck and still being saved by firefighters. Once in Woodham Rd and once in Epsom Rd at Sockburn this week.

It’s not our job. But someone has to do it. Well done both fire crews.

Linwood College students will begin preparations for their BP Business Chal-lenge this week.

The challenge starts this week with a three day prac-tical workshop to introduce students to the business world, before the regional competition on November 11.

About 45 schools across New Zealand participate in the yearly challenge. It

is run by Young Enterprise Trust, with BP the major sponsor.

The students work in teams to create a business plan for a new product, which they will then pitch to local judges on Novem-ber 11.

The Linwood College team will be supported by business mentors to help teach and coach them.

Chief executive of Young Enterprise Trust

Terry Shubkin said con-necting students with local business people was the key to the programme’s success.

“Students walk away with a learning experience that is practical and calls on the experience of those that have gone before them. The judges walk away with a re-warding experience of giv-ing back, and many go on to provide further mentoring to these students,” he said.

Type 2 diabetes is becoming a major health issue for New Zealand, with obesity recognised as one of its most preventable causes. According to a Diabetes NZ spokeswoman, “While there is no silver bullet, we do

know we can prevent obesity through lifestyle and exercise.”For their part, the team at Physical Sense Gym & Physio also

recognise that a healthy diet and regular exercise are the two key factors underpinning successful weight loss and have developed a programme specially designed for diabetes clients. It is proving popular with people across a wide age range (20 to 70), including many who are overweight or severely obese.

The programme comprises a circuit that allows the clients to do the exercises at their own pace, without any pressure to keep up, combined with advice from the community diabetes team who support them through the necessary changes to their food habits.

“The advantage for these clients is that we are a normal public gym, so our diabetes clients are mixing with people who don’t have health conditions,” team member Ietje van Stolk says.

“And by coming to the gym, our diabetes clients are getting out of the house and are meeting other people including people with the same issues and weight problems as they have, and being physically active is very motivating. They encourage each other and there is plenty of fun and humour between themselves and with the instructors, who are there to lean on and help everyone reach their goals.”

Medical research shows participation in regular exercise gets the heart rate up, helps strengthen muscles, improves blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, Ietje points out. It also positively affects lipids and blood pressure, reduces the risk of cardiovascular events and improves quality of life.

Physical Sense Gym & Physio has had many positive comments

starts in ChristchurchNew diabetes exercise group

from clients about the programme. One, who goes six times a week, says he loves having somewhere to go and hates the days he is not going to the gym. Another says, “It’s the only thing I have for me, and I have improved my eating habits.”

Others have found walking easier and have increased energy and fitness.

To encourage those on limited income, the first four sessions are free, and if clients have WINZ support the programme usually remains free, Ietje says. Attending the gym is as easy as a bus ride which stops right at the front door. There is also plenty of parking available should you choose to drive.

Physical Sense Gym & Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. Phone 377 2577.

Parenting can be difficult when you’re together, let alone when you are separated. Parents or guardians may disagree on

things such as day-to-day care, contact arrangements, choosing a school or child care, or what happens with the family home. This can be distressing for everyone, particularly children/tamariki.

But there’s a lot you can do to make things easier, for both you and your children. Parenting Through Separation is a free programme now being offered by Family Works in various locations in North Canterbury, Selwyn and Christchurch, depending on demand.

By taking part, you’ll get practical advice about separation and planning for your child. You’ll learn about talking to your ex-partner about arrangements with the children, child-focused planning, and resolving issues. The programme can also help grandparents and other wider family/whānau members work out a dispute about how children will be cared for.

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent. Researchers were amazed with the benefits of Coenzyme Q10

(CoQ10) to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well.

In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found that patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Also, patients on the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events, but from

all causes.According to lead study author professor

Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality, and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure.

CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age. Keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. For more info, call Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy on 388 5757. We Are Always Happy to Help!

Natural cardiovascular treatment

Even without exercise and diet, changes many have found it beneficial, although even better and quicker results are often obtained

with extra exercise and an improved diet. The extract of this amazing fruit is called

Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels in the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of stroke and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.

It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.

To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.

Miracle weight loss fruitAn extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia

Cambogia from India and other parts of Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health.

In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. The Dr Oz Show has said it is the most effective and fastest working natural

supplement to support weight loss.

Statin drugs are

used to treat many

patients with

cardiovascular

problems, but

these drugs also

reduce CoQ10

levels further in

the body.

Leaving a legacy and helping to save lives

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in New Zealand and also a major cause of loss of quality of life. By leaving a bequest to the Christchurch Heart Institute, we can work to reduce this number through valuable research into the prediction, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

We sit in cafés, offices, the car, in front of TV and computers.   Yet we know that inactivity is one of the high risk factors for

diabetes. More than 270,000 New Zealanders have diagnosed diabetes and many have it without knowing.

Poorly managed diabetes is a major cause of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness and foot and leg amputations. It is estimated that about a quarter of people with diabetes may not meet the basic requirements of foot care to avoid the risk of future amputation.

Keeping circulation boosted in feet and legs is essential to help avoid foot complications – numbness, tingling, loss of feeling, abrasions and ulcers, which do not heal and can lead to amputation.

So keep moving while you sit – in front of TV, in the office, the car. The Aircycle circulation booster enables this – helping maintain good blood flow to feet and legs. It is helpful for anyone who sits long periods as well as those with diabetes and arthritis.

Aircycles are available from Diabetes Christchurch, pharmacies, online at www.aircycle.co.nz or by phoning 04 569 5013.

Lifestyle Village in Geraldine is now centred on stage 5, with our first residents in this stage moving in late November. Concurrently, with this

is the construction of our new McKenzie Leisure Centre, which will cater for many lifestyle activities such as an indoor heated swimming pool and spa pool, gymnasium, art and craft area, library, lounge (with pool table, etc), hairdressing room and other key amenities. Out on the north side, the bowling green (plus croquet) is being formed to be followed by petanque, mini-golf and a children’s playground. The official opening of the Village and Leisure Centre is scheduled for Saturday, November 28, with the next day being a Public Open Day between 1pm and 4pm. Visitors are most welcome to come and inspect the Village and Leisure Centre on that Sunday. There will be light refreshments and music in the Lounge and some villas will be open for inspection.

There are now 32 occupied villas with 49 residents. As the number of residents has increased, so has the social aspect of village living. The spacious and well-insulated villas are a mixture of stand-alone and duplex styles with four basic plans to choose from. They all have at least two bedrooms and internal access garaging. There is a village bus, men’s workshop, allotments and parking for caravans, boats and campervans on-site. We will eventually build up to 120 villas, 10 apartments and 12 assisted-care apartments, the latter being

attached to McKenzie HealthCare next door. McKenzie HealthCare is an aged care facility with rest home, hospital, palliative care and dementia services.

Here at Just Kids Community Preschool we are committed to providing quality care and education to all our children. Since our opening in July 2003, we have worked hard to establish a centre that is welcoming and open to the diversity of our community, as well as one that meets the needs of children of all ages. We recently reviewed quality care and education in the nursery so this has been at the forefront of our work in the under two age group.

We have two nursery rooms that cater for infants and toddlers ranging in age from three months to two years.

What we focus on in our nursery rooms:

• We believe that infants and toddlers need trusting relationships with their teachers. Helping infants and toddlers settle when they first start preschool is very important to us. We focus on the individual needs of the child to help them feel safe and secure and we also support parents any way we can while their child is settling

• We deliberately lower numbers in each nursery to support quality care and build meaningful relationships

• It is important to us that children gain a sense of belonging and feel confident to express themselves

• Socialising is important for any child. Preschool gives young children the chance to build relationships with their peers ad learn social skills

• We build responsive, reciprocal relationships with whanau so we can get to know the individual child as much as possible, helping us to provide the best care and education we can. Communication with whanau is very important to us

• Big open spaces with plenty of outdoor space allows children to explore build confidence in a safe environment

• A wonderful diverse mix of teachers from different cultural backgrounds who are able to relate to both the children and their whanau

• A focus on smooth and easy transitions from the nursery to the over two’s room. Respecting each child’s needs and taking these into consideration in the transition, so they feel safe and secure in their new environment. A positive transition happens when there are lots of visits before they turn two and ensuring children establish a positive relationship with the teachers in the over two’s room, with a primary carer as they work through the transition
