Another step forward has been taken to build a new swimming pool at QE II.

The city council is seeking ex-pressions of interest for survey-ing, engineering and initial de-sign work on the site.

The EOI period closes on Feb-ruary 4 at which time any re-sponses will be evaluated by city council staff.

The city council is looking for between three and five compa-nies to be selected to carry out the initial work.

QE II site is also being consid-

ered for the site of the new com-bined Shirley Boys and Avonside Girls high schools. Burwood Park is the other option for the schools’ site.

Keep QE II in the East spokes-woman Jo Zervos was happy an-other hurdle had been reached but was hesitant to be overjoyed before the school decision was made.

“We’re quite pleased as it sounds like the pool will prob-ably go there but it is not over until the feasibility report goes through council and we still have to wait because of the schools.”

▌▌ IN BRIEF

Dune fireThere was a fire in the sand dunes along Marine Pde in South New Brighton last Wednesday. The fire started opposite Sandra St and the fire brigade said they received a large number of calls about the fire very quickly. Three trucks and a tanker were at the scene and three hose reels were used to put it out. Witnesses saw children running from the area and they have since been spoken to by police.

Registration datesNew Brighton Rugby Club has announced its junior registra-tion dates for the 2015 season. They are February 15 between 10am and noon; February 16 and March 3 between 6pm and 8pm. The club is also hosting a family picnic on February 15 from 11am. This is open to all club members, junior and senior. More details of the event will be available closer to the time.

Beach cricketNew Brighton Beach can expect some cricket action on Satur-day. The national Hyundai beach cricket tournament will be held at New Brighton with teams of six being able to enter. Compe-tition organisers are preferably looking for families to enter but a team can be made up of anyone. The tournament then moves up the country with stops at Tahuna Beach, Nelson, Petone Beach, Wellington and Milford Beach in Auckland. To enter head to www.hyundai.co.nz/family-time-proj-ect.

•From page 1Last September it was agreed by the city council that

any new recreation and sport centre should be built at QE II subject to a feasibility study, including geotechni-cal investigations.

It is expected city council staff will report back to Burwood-Pegasus Community Board in one of its first meetings back this year and to the city council in Febru-ary with the results of the geotechnical reports on the site and to seek approval to tender for the project.

The EOI is being issued now to make sure the tender process can begin as soon as possible after approval is sought from city council.

The total budget for the project is $37 million, which includes $30.5 million from the city council and $6.5 million from Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust.

Repairs to the Waltham Pool have taken longer than expected and it will not reopen today as planned.

It would now reopen on Saturday and the official opening pool party would be held on Sunday.

Council facilities and infrastructure rebuild direc-tor David Adamson said the delay was caused by some “minor hiccups”.

He said the original deadline became too tight due to the size of the project and the timeframes involved.

The reopening had been a long time coming for the community and the pool looked tremendous in spite of the delay, he said.

The pool had been out of action since suffering exten-sive damage in the earthquakes and repairs began on it last year. Repairs were expected to cost $3.2 million.

The facility would have a shallow water lido leisure area for children, a toddlers’ pool, a lane pool, a hy-droslide and a barbecue space.

The city council agreed to repair the pool to 67 per cent of the new building standard and make a number of upgrades and improvements to the facility.

“The refurbished pool will be something the commu-nity and council can be proud of,” Mr Adamson said.

Two Christchurch people are on the shortlist to be New Zealand’s local hero of the year.

Amy Burke of North New Brighton and Steven Parkinson-Loane of Redwood are among the 10 finalists shortlisted for the Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year award.

The award recognises those who have made a lasting impact in their communities.

North New Brighton resident Mrs Burke set up the Facebook page “Help for the homeless Christchurch” after concerns about what was happening on Christchurch’s streets.

With the help of a friend, Help for the Homeless’ operational base is Mrs Burke’s kitchen table.

They distribute warm cloth-ing and food every night of the week to the homeless people in the city.

The operation has also attract-ed support and donations from businesses and volunteer nurses to treat the homeless.

Redwood resident Mr Parkin-son-Loane created and runs Can We Fix It Yes We Canterbury, a voluntary group helping Can-terbury people maintain their homes and backyards.

For those suffering health is-sues, financial troubles or any other problems, Mr Parkinson-Loane rallies teams of volunteers to mow lawns, weed gardens, clear debris and do light mainte-nance on properties.

He finds people in need and often works up to 10 hours a day answering online requests, fund-raising to cover costs, labouring and organising volunteer groups.

Without Mr Parkinson-Loane the organisation would not exist.

It is run solely on donations and the generosity of others, including fundraising from sau-

sage sizzles and bake sales.Chief judge Cameron Bennett

said this year’s calibre of nomi-nations was high.

“Some have worked tirelessly to making other Kiwis better off while others have inspired us through being the very best at their chosen fields,” he said.

The winner will be announced

at the New Zealander of the Year Awards evening in Auckland on February 25.

Last year more than 200 local heroes from around the coun-try received medals at a special ceremony acknowledging their contribution.

More than 230 nominations were received for 2015.

GRASSROOTS SPORT

BY KYLE KNOWLES

The reigning club cricket Twenty20 and one-day champions have set their sights on a treble of trophies heading into the second half of the season.

After wrapping up the Twenty20 competition in November East Christchurch-Shirley are nicely placed in both one-day and two-day formats for a chance at claiming a rare clean sweep.

Coach Nev Lyons said it would be a tough ask to win all of the com-petitions in the one season but they would give it a crack.

He praised his young side and the performances they have given so far this season saying it is basically a brand new team from 2013/14 and they have got the job done in the first half of this season.

New Zealand under-19 player Leo Carter has been the big achiever so far this season and made his debut for Canterbury against Auckland on December 30.

Heading into Saturday’s game against Burnside they were second on the one-day ladder, three points behind an unbeaten St Albans.

East Shirley play St Albans in the last round of one-dayers which is likely to be the match to decide who takes top spot heading into the semi-finals.

Lyons said this was vital to their cause as the team enjoyed playing at Burwood Park.

The one slip-up of the campaign so

far was a loss to Canterbury Country in round two back in November.

Lyons said that loss was an off day and the batsmen did not step-up on a batter-friendly Mainpower Oval wicket.

“We were out-batted by the two young fellas (Jack) Boyle and (Har-ry) Chamberlain. That was the guts of it,” Lyons said.

A win in the two-day game will be a tougher title to reel in but Lyons said after they finished concentrating on the one-day games they would

have a good crack at it.East Shirley currently sit third on

the two-day ladder 10 points behind Lancaster Park-Woolston and 13 be-hind leaders Burnside.

Having already lost to Burnside in round two of the two-dayers they will need other teams to do the job over Burnside to catch them.

East Shirley meet LPW in the final round of the two-day competition which could potentially be a vital game in determining the outright winner.

Champs look for clean sweep

YOUNG GUN: East Shirley’s Leo Carter about to play a shot during a game in England. Carter scored a century in the last round of games before Christmas to help his side beat Lancaster Park-Woolston.

HEALTH

The inner cleanse — with a twistImagine taking a soiled sponge, submerging it in water and then wringing it out. Submerge it again and repeat.

When you rotate your body around the spine in a yoga exercise, you do the same thing to your internal organs. This in-creases circulation of nutrients, blood and oxygen and helps to flush out impurities.

Not only do twists aid in detoxification, but they help to balance out the flow of our energy. As we rotate the body from left to right, we stimulate

both hemispheres of the brain, in turn balancing out the yin and yang flows of energy within our body.

Energy flows up, down and in positive and negative directions.

The yin, feminine and anti-clockwise (or negative) flow of energy magnetises things to us. It is associated with the right brain and left side of the body.

The yang, masculine and clockwise (or positive) flow of energy is associated with the left brain and right side of the body and is associated with outwardly seeking the things that we are attracted to.

When we rotate our body around its axis both clockwise and anti-clockwise as well as cross our limbs across the

mid-line, we help to stimulate and even out the flow of our yin/yang energy (in yoga terms that’s called Prana).

To feel more harmony in the flow of your energy, do simple twists. Not only will they rinse and detoxify your internal organs, stretch your spine and the tough muscles in your back, they will also give you more bal-ance in the subtle ways you feel.

Happy twisting.•Denise Ferguson is founder

Medical experts are slamming an Australian author for link-ing wireless baby monitors to autism and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

“The claims made in this book would be laughable, if they weren’t so irresponsible,” says Telethon Kids Institute head of autism research Professor Andrew Whitehouse.

“This is fearmongering at best, and unethical at worst.” Brisbane author Donna Fisher is calling for the removal of wireless baby monitors from Australian shop shelves because she believes they emit danger-ous radiation.

In her new book, Light That Heals, she claims electromag-netic fields generated by wireless technology have the potential to cause cancer, reproductive problems, chronic fatigue and more. She is also concerned the exposure can increase the risk of Sids and is a contributing factor in the rise in autism.

“Devices such as wireless baby monitors can actually do more harm than good by creating developmental issues in our youngest generation of Austra-lians,” she says.

But autism expert Whitehouse says there is no evidence to suggest a link between the use

of wireless baby monitors and autism.

“It is not clear to me that the author understands the harm-ful effects these completely unsupported claims have on the autism community,” he says.

Jill Green, from Sids and Kids, says no research papers in the organisation’s extensive library catalogue link the use of wireless baby monitors with Sids.

But Professor Olle Johansson, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, defended Fisher’s work, saying that exposure to the ra-diation emitted by wireless baby monitors and similar gadgets posed real risks.

“We know that exposure to this radiation may impact DNA, leading to possible cancer risks,” he says.

“It can alter our immune de-fence, and also affects male and female germ cells and fertility.”

Some countries are choos-ing to err on the side of caution with WiFi until more is known. The Australian Government agency for radiation protection says there is no evidence that exposure to electrical fields is a health hazard. But whether exposure to magnetic fields is equally harmless remains a more open question, it says.

Facts not to be sneezed atMyths aboutallergies arealmost aswidespread asthe allergies

thinkstock photosYOUsneeze when a catwalks by, wheezethrough the spring andsummer, and can’t even

get close to a Christmas tree.Youmay think you’re alreadyaware of everything there is toknow about allergies and theallergens that trigger them. Youmay actually “know”much lessthan you think.Misconceptions about

allergies andwhat causes anattack are nearly as widespreadas allergies themselves. Hereare five commonmyths aboutallergy triggers and the factsbehind them.

Myth No 1Allergiesmay go away.Fact:Thismay be correct. It’s

true that allergies can fluctuatewith the season as allergens, likepollen ormould spores, wax andwane. And some food allergiesseem to disappear as childrengrow older—with the exceptionof peanut and tree nut allergies, which largely continue intoadulthood. But the underlyingcause of any allergy is an over-reaction by a sensitive immunesystem that perceives theallergen as a threat. Over time, your immune systemmay growaccustomed to an allergen andno longer react as strongly. Or,some other type of allergenmayemerge as a trigger. People candevelop allergies later in life, even if they never had them aschildren or young adults.

Myth No 2Houseplants give off pollensthat cause allergies.Fact: Pollen is definitely an

allergy trigger for many people. But the types of pollen thatcause sneezing, coughing anditchy, watery eyes are typicallyfrom outdoor sources like trees, weeds and grass— not indoor

plants. An extensive study byNasa found houseplants canactually improve indoor airquality. They act as natural airfilters by removing carbondioxide and contaminants, andemitting fresh, clean oxygen.

Myth No 3Peoplewith allergies shouldn’thave carpeting in their homes.Fact:Not one scientific study

affirms a link between theincrease of allergies and asthmaand the widespread use of carpetin homes. In fact, several studiesnot only refute a correlation, they even seem to indicatecarpet may actually bebeneficial to allergy sufferers. ASwedish study found that whencarpet use in that countrydeclined by 70 per cent, allergiesincreased by 30 percent.Another study,

encompassing nearly 20,000people in 18 different countries, found reduced asthmasymptoms among people withcarpeted bedrooms. Finally, astudy of more than 4600 NewJersey children found that kidswithmoderate to severe asthmawho had carpet in their

bedroomsmissed fewer schooldays and had less need forasthmamedication.“One explanation could be

that carpet acts like a filter, trapping allergens and keepingthem out of the air so they can beremoved through propercleaning,” says Joe Yarbroughof the Carpet & Rug Institute(CRI). “Effectively cleanedcarpet canmaintain indoor airquality, making it a viable choicefor families impacted byallergies and asthma.”

Myth No 4All you need is a vacuumcleanerwith a Hepa filter.Fact:Actually, it’s how

frequently and effectively youvacuum. To effectively removeallergens, a vacuummust notonly be able to pick up allergens, but also keep them containedinside the bag or canister untilyou can safely dispose of thedirt. Vacuums that expel dustand other allergens through theexhaust are simply putting allthose allergy triggers back intothe air you breathe. The CRItests vacuums for effectivenessand green qualities, and awards

a seal of approval to those thatmeet its testing standards.

Myth No 5Dog/cat hair causes allergies.Fact: If hair were the source

of pet allergies, simply shavingyour pet would eliminate yourallergy trigger. In fact, allergies are triggered

by proteins in oil glandsecretions that get shed asdander, and proteins in salivathat get spreadwhen a pet licksits fur, according to America’sNational Institute ofEnvironmental Health Sciences.Cat dander is themost commonpet-related allergy, but dogdander and rodent urine canalso be triggers.Getting rid of your pet won’t

rid your home of pet dander andhair. the National Institute ofHealth reports that both arepresent in virtually every home. You canmitigate your exposureand reaction by keeping pets offyour bed andwashing theirbedding weekly in hot water, using a prescription or over-the-counter allergymedication forsymptoms, and regularlycleaning carpets.

Korowai Youth Well Being Trust received donations from two Christchurch based global organisations recently to make a web-site.

Soroptimist International of Christchurch and Kiwanis Service Club donated a total of $28,000.

Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Bagshaw was presented the cheques which were raised

from fundraising activities over the last two years.

Earthquake money was also donated to help the youth of Christchurch.

Soroptimist International of Christchurch publicity officer Lesley Fursdon said it was worthwhile giving a donation because the trust knew what it wanted to spend the money on.

She said Soroptimist had

heard Kiwanis was also rais-ing funds and they decided to join forces.

The website would have an interactive page for youth to ask questions and would feature information on how to keep mentally, physi-cally, spiritually and socially healthy.

The trust is dependent on donations to run the free service.

DONATIONS: Kiwanis member David Gower, Soroptimist member Ann Hudson, Kiwanis member Graham Chick and Soroptimist president Lena Metcalf present Korowai Trust chairwoman Dr Sue Bagshaw the cheques.

Personal care services are available seven days a week when needed.

Support workers also provide domestic assistance which includes household tasks

CoQ10 reduces all causes of mortality by 50 per cent

In a recent multi-country double blind trial on the possible bene ts of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure

were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found to the amazement of the researchers the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo

Researchers were amazed with the results of how benefi cial a natural nutrient co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well.

According to the lead study author professor Mortensen, this study is the rst in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. It is known that CoQ10 levels decrease in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure as severity worsens. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems, but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart function or heart failure.

CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age and many researchers believe keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer.

CoQ10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health.

Free Youth Pathways courses help students to succeed

Youth Guarantee is a Government-led initiative designed to help students aged 16 to 19 to study for free.

The scheme is for those who are ready to move beyond school but want to continue with study, learning practical skills for

future employment.Hundreds of students are successful

through the programmes every year, which includes courses in cookery, construction, engineering, health and support, business administration and computing, hospitality, retail, sports training and Maori and Pasi ka culture. Many go on to work in apprenticeships or further education.

Youth Guarantee student Dylan Dallas feels like he is now achieving something a er nding school wasn’t working for him. He now feels motivated a er completing his Creative Level 2 programme.

“I found it really hard to learn at school and nothing I was learning felt relevant to me,” Dylan says. “ e Youth Guarantee course was really interesting. We did lots of creative prints and 3D modelling. It got me used to studying again, but in a better way than school.”

Dylan will return in 2015 to study his Certi cate in Design Level 4, but in the future he hopes to become an architect or a

draughtsman. “ is has put me on the path to a future career. I had no idea of what I wanted to do before, whereas now I’m in the right place and on the right track.”

Fellow student Juaan Whatuira-Edwards recommends Youth Guarantee to anyone who “doesn’t t in academically”. “I didn’t really like school and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I’m pretty grateful I found Youth Guarantee and got myself some skills,” Juaan says.

Juaan has completed the introduction to trades course and will return next year to do the pre-trade paint and panel course. “I can’t wait to get back into it and learn more. e tutors are really helpful and it’s really hands on. I really want to make this my career.”

Request more information on the Youth Guarantee programme and how to enrol by emailing [email protected] or by phoning0800 24 2476.

Youth Guarantee students learn practical skills to help them fi nd the right career path for them.

When seedy politicians stretch our credibilityThe US Government spends millions

of dollars on subsidised children’s school lunches every year. at’s ne when money is plentiful. But

in the 1981 recession, president Reagan put pressure on his treasury administrators to make serious budget cuts.

Creative thinkers at the US Department of Agriculture announced their plan to reclassify ketchup as a vegetable and they declared sun ower seeds were a meat substitute.

“ ese new arrangements will help balance the budget.”

But proofreaders in the US Department of Agriculture said: “You can’t do that. It’s an error of fact. Ketchup is not a vegetable and sun ower seeds are not the same thing as meat.”

The reclassification plan was quietly dropped.

“Proofreaders and editors look for more than spelling mistakes,” says Brian Morris, principal of New Zealand Institute of Business Studies. “ ey also check facts, dates, measurements and provenance, and they authenticate preposterous claims.”

Jordan Taylorlikes mastering the art of beauty

Currently studying a Diploma in Beauty erapy at e National School of Aesthetics, Jordan “enjoys the practical application

of ideas,” and the beauty programme is the perfect opportunity for her to gain these strengths.

She’s passionate about makeup, waxing, manicure and electrology. Despite no secondary school quali cations due to lack of interest at school, Jordan’s strong grades at NaSA re ect her passion in the beauty eld.

A er researching other beauty institutions, Jordan chose NaSA as she respected NaSA’s professionalism, strong reputation and welcoming sta . She also feels her classmates make her study more enjoyable.

Jordan’s not only starting a beauty career for herself but also for her two children, Ashton (6) and Noah (3). NaSA’s 9am to 1pm class times have helped her negotiate study and motherhood.

“Without NaSA’s exible hours, it would have been impossible for me to study,” Jordan says.

Other challenges include completing larger projects and homework while ensuring her children’s needs are met. Her children have grown to have “a deeper understanding of homework.”

A er completing her diploma, she plans to study NaSA’s Certi cate in Nail Technology. Once Jordan has mastered these skills, she’ll open her small business from home while “comfortably negotiating my role

as a mother,” and eventually develop it into a commercial practice as her children get older.

To launch your beauty career with NaSA, call 0800 NaSANZ, email [email protected] or visit www.nasa.co.nz.

Making dreams a realityAli Phillips has always known what

her dream job would be. rough Aoraki Polytechnic, she has been able to take the rst steps along the

path to making this a reality.Studying at Aoraki’s Christchurch campus,

Ali has completed her second year of hairdressing, a Certi cate in Professional Hairdressing, Level 3.

“I have always wanted to be a hairdresser since I was little - it has been my passion for many years,” says Ali. “I had grown up doing hair, cutting my Barbie doll's hair and generally fascinated with hairdressing.”

With no experience in the industry and having to balance study with the needs of her family as well, 26-year-old Ali found the perfect t at Aoraki.

“I’d been looking for a hairdressing course for some time and Aoraki seemed to suit my needs,” says Ali.

e Level 3 full-time course runs over 34 weeks. It is designed to provide students with all the skills needed to work in a commercial salon environment, including working with clients to advance their cutting, consultation, colouring and styling techniques.

“ ese last two years have both been very challenging and equally rewarding,” says Ali. “I have enjoyed every minute of it and love working with the people that have come through the course so far.”

For Ali, the most rewarding part of her study has been an increase in her con dence level and learning how to interact with the general public on a professional level.

Aoraki Polytechnic’s tutors are involved and respected in the industry, and provide invaluable links for students to the industry itself.

Ali is creating a portfolio of her work, which will play an important role when seeking an apprenticeship next year to complete her Year 3 quali cation.

Students are encouraged to aim high, with Ali intending to follow her apprenticeship with a full-time hairdressing position.

“My long-term ambition is to open my own salon,” says Ali.

Quali cations in hairdressing are available at Aoraki Polytechnic’s Timaru, Dunedin and Christchurch campuses. Visit www.aoraki.ac.nz, or call 0800 426 725for more information on getting your career underway.

Billed as one of the best Rod Stewart tribute acts, Rud Stewart performs two Christchurch shows - at the Cashmere Club this Friday night (16th January), and at the Hornby Working Mens Club this Saturday night (17th January).

Hailing from Yorkshire England, Rud has been performing his tribute shows to Rod Stewart for the past 15 years.

Often mistaken for Rod Stewart and a life long fan himself, he covers all of Rod's hits from the 60's through to the current day and latest album.

His shows have been seen in many corners of the world and he performs regularly in the UK, Sweden, Las Vegas USA and Majorca Spain.

Rud is that good he was invited to perform at the Rod Stewarts 60th birthday party.

When asked what his career highlights have been so far, Rud lists meeting Rod and performing at his 60th birthday party, singing at the Olympia football stadium, performing at the Helsingborg Festival in Sweden, and having his own song ‘Same Game’ played on BBC Radio 2.

Tickets to next weekend’s shows are $20 on sale now at the respective club offices.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see Europe’s premier Rob Stewart tribute artist backed by a full band.

Members, guests & affiliates welcome.
