Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship
The Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Utah is structured to provide highly moti-vated trainees with a comprehensive, rigorous expo-sure to infectious diseases of infants, children, and adolescents and prepare them for academic careers. The Division's eight faculty members are committed to outstanding clinical care, teaching and to performing research that advances the field of infectious disease. The clinical opportunities in our fellowship program are outstanding. Primary Children's Hospital (PCH) is a 289 bed pediatric hospital that serves both as the community hospital for Salt Lake City and northern Utah and as a referral center for southern Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Montana. PCH is the main site for clinical training and has a busy and varied clinical service. Fellows also receive training in clinical microbiology, molecular diagnostics, antibiotic stewardship, HIV medicine and hospital epidemiology.

OUR PROGRAM Our fellows are ensured funding for all 3 years. First year fellows spend 5-6 months on the inpatient consult service. Second and third year fellows spend 3-4 months. Additionally, fellows regularly participate in out-patient clinics including general ID, HIV care, transplant medicine, TB clinic, immunology clinic and travel medi-cine. The remainder of the fellowship focuses on re-search experiences. Each trainee is paired with a primary mentor and a research mentoring committee. Trainees have opportunities for both clinical and bench research. The research interests of the faculty include: the epidemiology and diagnosis of respiratory infections including bacterial pneumonia, influenza and other viruses; molecular diagnostics; outcomes research; antimicrobial steward-ship; hospital-acquired infections; and infections in the immune-compromised host. In addition to the Division faculty, fellows can work with clinical microbiologists and molecular pathologists at the Associated Regional University Pathologists (ARUP) Laboratories. ARUP is one of the nation's premier reference laboratories and is located on the research campus of the University of Utah. All trainees participate in a fellows training course offered by the Department of Pediatrics that includes training in study design, statistics, grant preparation, scientific writing, scientific lecturing and research ethics.
Education
Our educational conferences are designed to supplement the superb training our fellows receive in the clinical Setting. We have 2 division conferences each week, one focusing on clinical care and the other focusing on research. We have regular didactic sessions including a weekly conference jointly with the adult infectious diseases division at the University of Utah. Fellows have the opportunity to travel to professional meetings including IDWeek and the Pediatric Academic Societies to both present research and participate in the educational activities provided at these meetings. Our fellows have the opportunity to pursue additional training including a master’s degree in clinical investiga-tion, clinical pharmacology or advanced training in quality improvement.
