Dear all,

It’s my pleasure to introduce the 2010 Pearson Summer Internship yearbook and congratulate you on completing your internship. Since starting the Pearson Diversity Sum-mer Internship programme five years ago I have met many enormously impressive people, and we at Pear-son are very proud of the array of talent it has brought into our busi-ness over the years.

I’m proud of the ambition and talent the interns bring into the business each year, and this yearbook is one way of highlighting the interns and their contribution to Pearson.

As always this year has brought some welcome developments for the internship; the programme con-tinues to gain support across the business, and we were delighted that our colleagues in Oxford hosted two interns. The Economist Group continued their participation for the second year running, along with the long-standing participation of the FT Group, Penguin, Pearson Education and Pearson Vue.

As you know, we continue to run this internship as part of embed-ding diversity into our culture here at Pearson, and I’m delighted to say the programme, continue to be a positive flagship for Pearson’s repu-tation on diversity.

I hope we continue that progress, and retain as many of our interns as we can within the business.

To the interns I wish you every pos-sible success in pursuit of your goals, and I hope you will make ev-ery effort, as we will to stay in touch.

Enjoy your yearbook

Best Regards, Abu Bundu-Kamara

The Pearson Diversity Summer Internship Programme is run by Pearson plc to give students and graduates from ethnic minority backgrounds an opportunity to gain experience in the media, publishing and education industries, and increase diversity within Pearson. Established in 2004, the programme has grown to include all Pearson operating companies, The Financial Times, Pearson Education, Penguin, Edexcel and Pearson Vue. In 2009, The Economist Group became the latest company to join the Pearson Summer Internship Programme. As an innovative programme, it recognises the benefits of diversity and ensures that interns are paid a training allowance of £1, 100 a month to facilitate their participation; for over five years, the internship programme, run by the Pearson Diversity & Inclusion department, has given talented people from diverse backgrounds an insight into the organisation and an opportunity to be part of it. In this time, over fifty graduates from diverse backgrounds have contributed their skills and gained experience with Pearson companies. In many cases, the companies have retained them.

How the programme worksEach year well over 300 students and recent graduates apply for a place on the Programme. The best applications are sent to participating managers, who then select their candidates following an interview.

Interns are provided with: - A dedicated business project- Paid a training allowance of £1, 100 a month - Work in the business for eight weeks (Business Internships) and twelve weeks (Journalism internship)

Sum

s

Dear all,

We’ve had another fantastic year on the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship with a record number of applicants of exceptional quality. Each year, a great amount of activity goes into promoting the Pearson Diversity Summer Intern-ship and Pearson as a desirable place to work for candidates from black and other ethnic minority backgrounds. 2009/2010 has been no different. This year:

Our first social media interns, Nene Udofot and Aditi Ghosh who all helped to push the summer internship at their re-spective university campuses and across the various campuses and digitally.

We firmly established our presence on Facebook, the world’s largest social net-working site with an over 50% increase in the number of fans and internship participants.

We carried out various number of uni-versity visits to campuses as far afield as Manchester, Cambridge and Kent, including visits to a mix of post 1992 universities and red brick universities.

We held ‘Getting into Pearson’ a well attended open day aimed at informing candidates about the possibilities on the internship and careers at Pearson.

We had our first internship blogger, Jes-sica Chan, who produced a wonderful and informative account of her time on the internship programme and the culture of Pearson to a person entering for the first time.

And in the next year, we will be building on this success, by increasing our activ-ity on social networking sites, program-ming more university visits and events and revamping the internship website to make it more accessible, informative and engaging and increasing our online pres-ence. We hope you will join us in promot-ing the internship by whatever means necessary to make as many candidates aware of this wonderful opportunity. You can find and join our group on facebook, watch our video on youtube and visit our website at http://www.summerintern-ships.pearson.com

The first few steps into your profes-sional life can be daunting, there are many decisions to make, and you won’t necessarily get them all right, but as we talked about during your development day, if you maintain the right attitude and tenacity, each experience helps prepare you for success.

Following the development day and your experiences during your internship I hope you now have a clearer insight into your style and have reflected on how your style will influence those around you and increase your impact. In addition we discussed the best ways to net-work and how to make the most of those contacts, as well as spending some time thinking about your future plans, setting yourself inspirational personal goals.

I hope the things you’ve learnt here and the people you’ve met set you off on a journey towards success and happiness, and that you will keep referring back to the experi-ences you’ve had here – and to the resolutions and ambitions you ex-pressed so well in your letters as the foundation for your success. You all have the potential to be talented and successful.

I wish you all the best and good luck.

I hope you all feel you’ve made the most of your internship here at Pear-son and left a positive impression both in your mind and others of your achievements here.

Favourite Book: I’ve thought long and hard about this question. I don’t think I can pinpoint a favourite book. Instead, I’ve decided to write about my current read. ‘From There to Here’ was given to us by Pearson on our induction day and has been an inspiring read. The book is a collection of sixteen true tales of immigration to Britain. It has given me an insight into the physical and emotional anxiety of being torn away from your home and starting a new life from scratch. It has also been very informative as I now understand why my dad spends all seasons, including the majority ofsummer wrapped in his puffer jacket.
