Head Teacher’s report

Welcome to the annual report for Broughton-in-Furness Church of England School.

The last school year has flown by and I have enjoyed another super year here at Broughton. Every day I have counted my blessings having been fortunate to lead such a wonderful school – the children, staff, governors, parents and community.

I would like to convey my thanks to the Broughton School Association which continues, through tireless fundraising, to support the school in so many ways. This year the children have benefitted in many ways including a whole school trip to Muncaster at Christmas, support with funding for urban week and the Y5/6 residential to London. I encourage all parents to support the BSA — it really does make a difference.

In school the staff have worked hard to plan and implement a topic based curriculum. It has been wonderful to observe the enthusiasm of the children with many bringing in artefacts to share and support their learning. This approach has also allowed us to take learning outdoors more frequently and make learning much more meaningful. Thank you for your support with this. I thank everyone for their commitment to our children — this ensures each child has a high quality learning experience in an environment where they feel safe and valued.

Children have had the opportunity to access many extra curricular activities this year: chess, football, orienteering, knitting, gardening and Engineering Club. Thank you to all staff, parents and friends of the school that make these opportunities possible.I offer sincere thanks to all who have had an input into our school this year.My final thanks, as always, remain with the staff and governors for their dedication and support.

I feel privileged to have lead Broughton School and as I say ‘Goodbye’ to our current Year 6 – Anna, Callum, Michael, Oliver and Stephen – and all the other children, staff, governors and families I do have a sense of sadness. Along with that is a sense of excitement; Broughton is a wonderful school and there is so much to look forward to in the future under the leadership of Mrs Jacki Graham-Kevan.

Club Reports

Fifteen children regularly attended football this year, with both boys and girls from Reception to Year 6 attending.

Another great season with the Junior Team taking second place in The North Lonsdale Small School League. This gave them the opportunity to play at Barrow AFC’s Holker Street ground. It was a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

We will be sorry to see the Year 6 team members leave but we are sure we will see lots of new members arriving in September.

As always a big thank you to all the parents who help with the training sessions, transport and washing the kit – we couldn’t do it without your support.

Football Report


Our prayers were answered and the sun shone for our planned sports day. We were very fortunate that the sports field had been resurfaced and the children had a beautiful safe green space to participate on – no running around coned off holes this year!

As always the day was greeted with much excitement and enthusiasm; the children were also looking forward to it! With the children all dressed in their rainbow team colours, equipment ready for the races, chairs for family and friends it was time to begin.

Every child participated in races of their own choice and there was a lot to choose from: running, skipping, egg and spoon, bean bags on bats, relay and obstacle races. All the children really tried their best and I know they had a super day from the smiles and deafening cheers for their teams!

Mums, Dads and toddlers joined in the fun too and there were some spectacular performances on the track! At the finish line all competitors received a ticket to recognise their efforts and points were awarded to their team accordingly.

This year the winning team was Buttermere.Well done and thank you to everyone involved!

Sports Day


Chess Club has again taken place in lunch-times in the Autumn and Spring Terms. In Autumn, we played a school tournament and friendly matches and in the Spring Term we again entered the British Land Chess Championship, a national event. Several children qualified for regional competitions in their own age-groups. Once again, the children showed good attitudes throughout, in commitment, concentration and sportsmanship. Chess Club will start again in September. Mrs. Worthington

This year saw an increase of 50% in the number of pupils attending the club and all the pupils have been very enthusiastic, showing great imagination and a good work ethic.

We were pleased to have a talk by Alison Jones & Sarrawat Rehman from the University of Leeds about bio-mechanical engineering, which due to the snow became an interactive internet presentation (how high-tech are we?). The club entered their first competition, run by BAe Systems, which was based on bio-mimicry. Whilst none of our entries won, the designs and models produced were superb and a good time was had by all.The pupils have also been very busy covering many other aspects of engineering: they’ve built and destroyed bridges made from lollipop sticks; made models of Tudor houses; built up the electric go-kart and started to

investigate charging the batteries by solar panels to make it more environmentally friendly; and even made birds’ nests of all shapes and sizes just using one hand.

We’re happy to report that there have been no unauthorised absences this year. However, authorised absences have been high due to an increase in holidays taken during term time. We would remind parents that we are only able to authorise 1O days’ holiday in a school year. The LA and Government are putting pressure on schools to improve attendance, and absence due to holidays is a major factor in this.

Broughton School is able to fulfil all the requirements with regard to pupils with disabilities (as set out in the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act). Our Special Educational Needs policy makes provision for any disabled pupils and the physical layout of the school on one level makes for full wheelchair access.

We’re pleased to report that this year, as last year, we’ve had no breaches of school security. A few incidents of vandalism resulted in minor damage in the grounds and to some PE equipment. We have been supported by PC John Baldwin and this appears to be resolved. This has led to the Governors taking the decision to limit access to the grounds to authorised users only.

Tuesday morning 28th June at 6.30am we set off from school to pick up the children and staff from Cambridge Primary School. Everyone was very excited, some of us were perhaps a little nervous at the prospect of four days away from home but this was soon forgotten as we hit the motorway and headed off to London.

Gerald our driver did a fantastic job and we arrived safely at The Queen Mary University at 3.30pm. We found our rooms, unpacked quickly and had our first dinner. The food was great, sometimes a little spicy, but most people enjoyed every meal (especially breakfast!)

After dinner we had a flight on the London Eye, again some people were nervous but the fantastic views soon had everyone distracted. We recognised lots of landmarks and took some amazing pictures; this was a favourite experience for many. Following the flight we walked along the Embankment and were entertained by some of the many street actors who were juggling and dancing. Everyone was tired by the end of the day and we all settled quickly and slept well; city life is tiring, every night within 10 minutes of going to bed everyone was fast asleep! The teachers were impressed!

Wednesday morning, following breakfast, we went to Westminster to the Houses of Parliament. Security was very strict – Mrs Woodburn was searched by a policeman and we all had to have special passes with our photographs on.

We met our MP John Woodcock, who remembered us from his visit to our school. Mrs Woodburn stood in Lord Sugar’s seat in the House of Lords; she was quite excited as she likes to watch The Apprentice.

Following Westminster we had lunch in Westminster Gardens, the weather was lovely and it was nice to picnic in a park in the middle of the city. There was a man with a really long beard and he dressed up as a Viking, we weren’t sure what he was doing but it was interesting. After lunch we went for a cruise on the Thames, we learned more about the history of London and about lots of the buildings; a two bedroomed apartment on the Thames would cost about £2,000,000!

An early dinner followed and we dressed for the theatre. We went to the Lyceum Theatre to see ‘The Lion King’. The show and the special effects were

amazing. All the children and adults really enjoyed the evening - even though one or two children had a quick sleep! – it was a favourite part of the visit for many people with the baby elephant being a great hit!

Thursday morning we took the opportunity to drive to see the Olympic Stadiums being constructed, we saw the main athletics stadium, the swimming pool, the velodrome and the village where the athletes will be based. We then went to the British Museum where we saw lots of things that we have learned about in school, it was a shame that we couldn’t access all areas as some of the staff were on strike and some areas were closed. Mrs Woodburn bought everyone an ice-cream which was lovely in the warm sunshine. Thursday lunch was a picnic in Hyde Park beside the Queen Victoria memorial; we also had time for a game of tig before setting off for the Science Museum. The Science Museum was great fun; there were lots of different things to explore and a fantastic shop!

Thursday night was X-Factor night, we all had the chance to sing together and lots of children sang on their own. Broughton produced the winner with our super group ‘FBL’ (Flora, Bella and Lucy). It was good fun, even Mr Abbott and Craig sang for us.

Friday morning came all too quickly, everyone made the 8.00am breakfast and packed their bags. We set off on our last visit to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. It was really exciting walking up the Mall, there were so many people. The Guards looked tremendous; they must have been extremely hot in their uniforms as we were really hot in our summer clothes.

It was all over far too soon, we couldn’t believe how quickly four days had gone by and it was time for the journey home. We had a great time and brought back lots of souvenirs. We also brought back something more precious, the memories of a wonderful trip that will stay with us for a lifetime.

Mrs Woodburn, Mr Abbott and Craig would like to say a huge thank you to every child on the visit, you all made it an absolute pleasure!


View from the Chair

Another busy and exciting year has been enjoyed at Broughton School.

As a governor and a parent of children at the school, I am always impressed how staff, pupils, parents and governors work together so successfully to create the unique atmosphere we have here. I also recognise the strong support of our local community, who not only attend fundraising events, but also volunteer their time to help in school.

The governing body also relies on volunteers, from within the school, church and the wider community, to carry out its range of duties and responsibilities in school – together, it represents a wide range of views and experiences.

We have a happy and successful school in Broughton – with your continued support, it can only get stronger.
