Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

Iowa Get Your Business Online Deemed a SuccessOne of the best ways for a small business to market in this digital age, is to have a web presence. That simple solution came to Muscatine on February 21, giving local business’ the chance to ‘get online’ with Google offering their free workshop, held at Muscatine Community College, Gaekle Hall.

SCORE's Muscatine Chapter joined in a partnership with Muscatine Community College and GMCCI to bring the highly energetic Google team to Muscatine. With a sell-out crowd of 25 registered attend-ees it was deemed a success, with many walk-ins also joining in, eager to get their business online.

This hands-on workshop allowed attend-ees to build their own website and receive a Google Places listing. Additionally they received a free customized domain name and will receive free hosting for one year. This program gave each attendee a free, easy and fast way to get their business online and jump started for the new year.

If your business missed out on this op-portunity, do not fret, Google will return to our area. SCORE, MCC and GMCCI plan on inviting the Google team back to Muscatine in late summer or early fall for another seminar. Watch for information in the Pearl City Progress and GMCCI’s weekly non-profit email blast What’s Up Muscatine.

The Google team presented to a capacity crowd at Muscatine Community College on February 21. The seminar was a partnership between SCORE’s Muscatine Chapter, MCC and GMCCI.

Site Visit From Blue Zone Selection Committee Scheduled for March 7Muscatine is one of eleven finalists to become a Blue Zones Demonstration Project. Final plans are in process for the site visit from the Blue Zones Selection Committee from Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Healthways. The visit has been scheduled on March 7th.

At this visit our community will learn more about what it means to become a Blue Zones Community while the Blue Zones Project Team will have the opportunity to better understand our community’s readiness to become a Blue Zones Demonstration Site.

One of the criteria is community support as judged by the percentage of each city’s population that complete a pledge, by

voting to support a healthier lifestyle. At last report, Muscatine is at 11.92% and in 5th place of the residents logging onto the www.bluezonesproject.com website and completing the short pledge in the green box on the site’s landing page.

If very person who signed up recruited just one other person, Muscatine would double to almost reach the goal of 25%. Texting BZP to 772937 will also work to complete your vote.

The plan is to get many more residents involved after the site visit. But everyone

can pledge by “voting” for Muscatine now.

Subtle changes in lifestyle will lead us down the path to becoming a Blue Zones Community - a journey that will reap rewards of a healthier community and increased economic prosperity. Muscatine is ready!!!!

City of Muscatine Had Its ‘Day on the Hill’The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry, along with Muscatine’s top government officials and key business leaders, traveled to Des Moines on Wednesday, January 25, to meet with State Legislators to discuss issues important to the citizens of Muscatine County.

Although, Governor Branstad was unable to attend because of President Barack Obama visiting Cedar Rapids that day, Muscatine’s leaders were still able to hear from legislative leaders. They also spoke with committee chairpersons about bills important to them and others in Muscatine.

Together, with more than 300 capitol staff, they visited, shared thoughts and ideas and dined with lunch provided by Muscatine Foods Corporation.

State Representatives, Mark Lofgren, R – Muscatine, and Jeff Kaufmann, R – Wilton, both talked of the importance it is to know what is really going on in our local communities, as bills get started, but the work on them is continued often longer than most think.

Bill Phelan, President & CEO, GMCCI, also stressed the importance of Muscatine’s ‘Day on the Hill’ and thanked everyone who was involved.

“I would like to thank the many business and government representatives for attending the Muscatine Day on the Hill. I truly believe that this event clearly demonstrated to both our legislators and legislators throughout the state that Muscatine is a community of people that see and appreciate the hard work that our elected officials do on our behalf. I believe everyone in attendance sincerely appreciated our visit to the Hill, and took away a better understanding of Muscatine.”

GMCCI staff, as well as Muscatine government and business officials, traveled to Des Moines on January 25 for Muscatine’s “Day on the Hill”, where they discussed important issues to Muscatine County.

Jobs Created Within the Travel and Tourism Industry Impact Muscatine County’s Economy By: Heather ShoppaA study commissioned by the Iowa Economic Development Authority concluded the Travel and Tourism Industry is directly responsible for 677 jobs within Muscatine County. The same study further concludes those jobs provide $10.54 million in payroll for Muscatine County’s economy. Muscatine County ranks 18th, out of all 99 counties in Iowa, in terms of being positively impacted by the Travel and Tourism Industry.

Certainly that seems like a tremendous number of jobs and an impressive economic impact for Muscatine County, especially when jobs within the Travel and Tourism Industry had once been considered low paying positions. Not so anymore, according to the US Department

of Labor’s “Bureau of Labor Statistics Guidebook”, the median annual wages for today’s lodging manager is $45,800 and a food service manager can expect a median annual wage of $46,320. As the demand for these highly trained, tech savvy professionals grow, so does their ability to command a higher salary.

The Travel and Tourism Industry is also the place many teens look to for their first work experience, such as in food service, retail, entertainment or lodging. The training they receive and the skills they develop on their first job often prepare them for their next job. The Travel and Tourism Industry also encourages local entrepreneurship as business people look for ways to meet the needs of travelers.

One view of the Travel and Tourism Industry is to view “tourism” as a means of importing tax payers so locals don’t have to pay as many taxes, which is great for any community’s local economy.
