OUR MESSAGE
Established in Washington, D.C. in 1988 by the members of the Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc., ® Xi Omega Chapter, the Pearl and Ivy Educational Foundation was
formed by dedicated volunteers, committed to serving those in the community who need
assistance. From the beginning, the Foundation’s focus has been to support opportunities
for deserving youth graduating from public high schools and public charter schools in
Washington, D.C. to attend college, and continue graduate school education by providing
scholarships.
You Have, and Can Continue, To Impact Students Seeking a College Education
We recognize the contributions of individuals, businesses and the 400 member volunteers
of PIEF and Xi Omega who lifted up students and helped them achieve their dreams in
2015.
We extend our heartfelt “thank you.”

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Scholarship Committee of the Pearl and Ivy Educational
Foundation(PIEF) has traditionally awarded three separate
sets of scholarships annually:
(1) the PIEF high school scholarships, awarded each spring and open to graduating seniors
enrolled in District of Columbia public high schools and public charter high schools;
(2) (2) PIEF “returning” or “renewal” scholarships, awarded to former PIEF high school
scholarship recipients currently enrolled and in good standing at colleges / universities as
rising sophomores – rising seniors; and
(3) (3) Xi Omega undergraduate scholarships, awarded to members of the three undergraduate
chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Alpha Chapter at Howard University, Beta
Lambda Chapter at the University of the District of Columbia and Lambda Zeta Chapter at
American University) supervised by the Xi Omega Chapter.
Each set of scholarships is application-based, with students required to submit a written
application, supporting documentation, and for the first two categories of scholarships an essay
responding to a designated question.

2015 HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Scholarship Committee held its high school scholarship awards ceremony on May 27, 2015
Dr. James Lyons, Interim President, University of the District of Columbia was the keynote speaker
and in his speech, he challenged the students, who he recognized as the "best and brightest in the city“.
Scholarships in the amount of $2,300 each were awarded to 14 students from eight DC public and
charter high schools located in four Wards of the city. Many of the awardees represented first-generation
college attendees. These students matriculated to the University of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Grinnell College,
Grinnell, IA; Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA and Delaware State University, Dover, DE.

RETURNING SCHOLAR AWARDS
Scholarships were awarded to 11 returning scholars, in good standing at their respective
colleges and universities including three HBCUs – Howard University, Washington, DC;
Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA; and Hampton University. Hampton, VA. Some of the
achievements made by these students included leadership development and international
academic immersion experiences.
