Today’s Readings

Third Sunday of Easter

"See how it is written that the Christ would suffer

and on the third day rise from the dead."

First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Peter’s sermon in the Temple area ends any ignorance on the people’s part of Jesus’ true identity, and targets the awful way they acted before Pilate. He calls for repentance and conversion. Second Reading: I John 2:1-5a

Here we have the biblical viewpoint on what “knowing God”

really means. It is keeping His commandments. God’s love for

us is the source of the love for Him that we have in our hearts.

Gospel: Luke 24:35-48

Jesus’ victory over death is symbolized by His simple act of

eating a meal again with His disciples. His message will go out

to the world through His disciples and eventually through us.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. The Archdiocese

of Miami runs one of the most robust awareness and

prevention programs in the country. For more information

Below is a snippet from one of the Virtus program’s

Protecting God’s Children online monthly bulletins.

Dating violence, defined as physical assault or acts of bodily

harm, including psychological and emotional abuse, verbal or

implied, that take place in private or in social situations in

teens is significant in scope with 85% of boys and 88% of

girls revealed that they had been the victim of this type of

aggression at least once in their current dating relationship.

Psychological aggression often leads to physical aggression.

Dating violence may be pronounced during adolescence due to

the newness of romantic relationships for boys and girls and

they may not be able to constructively cope with frustration,

jealousy or other negative emotions. Many of these situations

are also linked to cyberbullying where teens can exploit

technology to cause harm to a romantic partner including

abuse of monitoring or stalking through electronic devices

access and even blackmailing or extortion with stored content.

Electronic dating violence is a growing problem that requires

more conversation and discussion with youth about what

healthy dating looks like and what dysfunctional dating looks

like.

Thank you Visitation!

We handed out 400 Hope Totes during the Lenten season to our parishioners. We received 140 in return which went directly to the Miami Rescue Mission. Operation Hope Tote is the

collection of personal care

items used to create hygiene

kits for infants, children, and adults and are distributed to the

homeless and those in need throughout the year. It's a great way to

visibly show we care.

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

When they come, their rarity makes us reach out to grab them. But gently but with a firm grip, like we would nabbing a firefly on a summer evening. I refer to compliments. It’s ironic that the toughest for many of us is accepting a compliment. But they do make us smile through our shyness. But here’s a question: What do you do if God gives you a compliment? How do we break through our shock and awe to acknowledge the honor? What do we do further? We have to answer those questions if for no other reason than our natural respect for our Creator and Lord. Perhaps you missed the compliment given to us in today’s Gospel passage, but it’s there. It comes when Jesus tells His disciples (and us) that we are to be His witnesses. His “go to” people when He wants authentic witnesses to Him and His message to satisfy inquirers. I mean that for right now, this April day in 2015. Remember, for God a thousand days are less than a blink of an eye. He is not held captive of time and place like we are. The pages of the Gospel are not meant to be filed in some dusty archive. Nor is their content aimed at an audience “back there” and not “right here.” The fancy word for this witnessing Christ asks of us is “evangelization.” I know you have at least heard the word mentioned in church, or perhaps you have read about it. For some of us, that word has overtones that could intimidate us. Does it mean that I have to buy a soapbox and stand along Route 9 and start preaching? Absolutely not, although the novelty of doing that might stop traffic! No, it’s you and everything about you that does the witnessing. You don’t have to say a word, although the way you talk and the words you use are part of the “package.” Also the way you dress. The way you act. Your demeanor and your decisions. Even your diversions. Then there’s that crucifix visible in the family room. That BVM statue in your flower garden. Your noticeable habit of Mass at the parish every Sunday, or to another Catholic church when you’re traveling. Your outreach to the needy and your volunteering for a parish effort of some kind. The positive difference you make to your neighborhood. Your smile. And when the time and the circumstances permit it, your faith-filled answer to that often unasked question from someone: “What makes you tick?”

Dear Lord Jesus, I thank You for the compliment you give me in asking me to spread the word about Yourself. You are indeed the “good news” the world longs to hear, even if it can’t express that longing. For this mission, I give You my whole self, Lord, that You may grow in me, and tell me what to say and do. For “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Amen. (Galatians 2:20)

The Word This Week

We continue to think about the Resurrection this week, from

three different perspectives: the Gospel gives us another story

of Jesus appearing to his disciples - this time the beautiful

story of the meeting in Jerusalem, when Jesus proves he is alive

and no ghost by eating some grilled fish: he reminds the

disciples that all he suffered and rise so the “repentance for the

forgiveness of sins” could be preached to the whole world.

The first reading shows us Saint Peter doing just that, as he

addresses the crowd in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost: he

takes them through recent events (fifty days earlier),

highlighting the important point, that he and the disciples can

witness to the raising of Jesus from the dead, and calling them

to “repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped

out.” The second reading brings this into our lives: the

resurrection is not just a historical event, which we remember.

By baptism (which we renewed at Easter) we become part of

Jesus in his dying and his rising, as he ‘becomes the sacrifice

that takes our sins away’. So all that Saint John tells us about

the commandments and avoiding sin is our way of living the

Resurrection.
