Students were great ambassadors for the school and welcomed both teams onto the oval, spending an enjoyable evening watching the game.

Activ8 Day—Friday 10th July

Worthing High School held its annual Activ8 Day on Friday 10th July. 38 tutor groups, representing each of the four communities, took part in a carousal of activities including bench ball, softball, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, handball, rowing, basketball, dodge ball, nerf and football. Tutor groups were looking to earn as many points as they could for their community through team work, participation, effort and competition. There was a real sense of community ethos throughout the school which created a great atmosphere for students and staff. All four communities were fantastic and it was hard to announce a winner. The honours this year went to TARRING.

I have been a student at Worthing Teach Me Kung Fu School for over 4 years. I have completed all my 12 belts and gained my black belt. This consists of 2 parts, one of which you have to be blind folded! When I achieved my black belt I was invited to join the Black Sash Masterclass. I am now working on my Technician grades. There are 4 Technician grades each consisting of 4 parts. I have just achieved my Technician 1 Part 3.

About 2 years ago, after a lot of hard work, I was nominated to be part of a small group called the STORM team. This stands for Special Team of Role Models. I attended training sessions to allow me to attend other lessons and teach. I started teaching at the Little Drag-on sessions for children aged 4-7. I then helped at the Junior sessions aged 7-11, and last year a group was formed for ages 11-16. I still teach at all these lessons 3 times a week as well as my own lessons twice a week. Af-ter 2 years of teaching all different age groups I have gained lots of self confidence and lead different activities within the lessons. It has allowed me to make special bonds and gain a

lot of respect, especially with the younger children and has given me skills to work out the best way to work with every individual child.

This year, when I turned 14, I started an apprenticeship to get trained to teach Kung Fu. I hope to get a job teaching at the School when I’m 18 as I am very pas-sionate about the sport.

“Sport has helped me to turn my life around, helping me to gain confidence in myself, grow as a person, meet new people and become the person I am today.” We look forward to running various new projects next year.

During the day Hannah delivered inspirational assemblies to KS3students on her life, de-scribing how once faced with an uncertain future, she discovered a positive channel for her energies at All Stars, one of London’s most prominent boxing clubs. Hannah went on to explain how she has transformed her life through sport, not only excelling at boxing, but acting as a strong role model for her local communities by promoting boxing in schools. For the rest of the day Hannah worked with KS4 students on reaching your potential and a ran a fitness session with a group of Year 9 girls. We look forward to completing new projects next academic year.

Worthing High School student and motor racing driver Ben Colburn won two out of two in the first race weekend of the Junior Saloon Car Championship at Rockingham Motor Speedway in April. Ben, who is in Year 10 and drives for Westbourne Motorsport, had qualified 2nd for both races after a wet and blustery qualifying session proved tough for many of the drivers in the championship. In race one Colburn lined up on the grid in 2nd place but was looking to achieve a win to start the season in style. From the green light it was Colburn who led into turn one overtaking Scott Mitchell on pole and from then on he opened up a massive gap of 7.8 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Brad Hutchinson; a great race from Colburn overall and one of the more easier races he will have this season. The next race however was much tougher, 15 year old Colburn got an even better start than the previous race and once again took the lead going into turn one. Scott Mitchell in second this time kept up with Colburn and for five laps the two youngsters were having a close duel for the lead up until the half way mark, when Mitchell's car broke down as they came onto lap six of ten. From then on, Colburn led from the front in his Citroen Saxo VTR and pulled out to a phenomenal 13.1 sec-

Ben followed up his double victory at Rockingham Motor Speedway with another double win in rounds 3 and 4 at Mallory Park on the 23/24 of May, in the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Ben qualified on pole for both races which heralded his first ever pole position in motor racing. In each race, Ben made a good start and pulled into a sizeable lead over his fellow competitors racing in his custom royal blue Citroen Saxo VTR, lapping a number of cars. He dominated each race and Colburn now leads the championship by 11 points, having won 4 out of 4 races so far. To round off a magnificent weekend, Colburn received his maiden JSCC ‘Driver of the weekend’ trophy. Furthermore, Ben has been chosen by the Motor Sports Association to join their elite Academy programme which prepares promising young drivers with the skills they need to improve their performances on and off the track. He has already attended the first session at Silverstone where he participated in a day of physiological testing at the exclusive Porsche Centre. Ben’s next race weekend is at Croft on 11-12 July.

Well done to five year 8 students who took part in the indoor athletics competition at The Littlehampton Academy. Students competed in events such as standing long jump, target throw, speed bounce, javelin/shuttle throw, high stepper, chest push and hurdles. The team finished second overall which is a fantastic achievement. Well done to Amy in year 8 who won the U13 St George's Day Girls rugby festival with her team Pulborough Rugby Club . Amy plays scrum half for her team. In total they scored 32 tries and on-ly conceded 3 tries . Amy and the team faced opposition from Reading, Oxford, Mansfield and beat Berkshire in the final. Well done to Amy and the Pulborough Rugby U13 team.

Sussex Cricket Disability Day

Students from Year 8 and 9 volunteered at the annual Sussex Cricket Disability Day. The day saw over 400 participants from schools and adult centres on the outfield at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, taking part in an array of cricket activities. Despite the bad weather, a great day was had by all. Students from Worthing High school were involved in supporting coaches and running their own mini stations on the day. Worthing High School ran its annual Cricket Academy for Worthing young people, in partnership with the Sussex Cricket Board on Monday 29th June. Over 150 year 5&6 students from Broadwater, Chesswood, Downsbrook, Thomas A Becket, Durrington Middle and Downsbrook Middle attending. Students were taught by Worthing High School sport leaders in the morning developing their cricket skills and completed a carousel of activities.

In the afternoon students participated in a tournament where the Sussex’s mascot ‘Sid the Shark’ joined in with the fun. Excellent cricket was on display all day. Students played several games before moving into a number of cup, plate and shield competi-tions. The overall final was played between TAB 1 and Downsbrook 3 – with some fan-tastic fielding and batting skills on show. TAB 1 were victorious and were crowned for the second year running ‘Worthing High Schools academy cricket tournament winners’. Sid the shark presented all students with a certificate and the winners with a medal and the Ashes trophy. Worthing High School is already looking forward to the tournament next year. Twelve of Worthing High School’s finest Sports Leaders attended the Year 3 Legacy Games at Worthing Leisure Centre on Wednesday 17th June. The students ran a carousel of five multi-skills activity stations for a number of schools during the four hour extravaganza. Over a thousand pupils were invited from Year 3 across the Worthing and District schools on a beautiful afternoon of sporting entertainment. The opening ceremony was presided over by the Mayor and Mayoress of Worthing and nearly 20 different activities were put on across the entire Worthing Leisure Centre site. Our students were congratulated for their friendliness, sense of fun and engagement with the younger pupils; they represented the school with passion and did themselves very proud. Tobias Richards in Year 11, a member of the Glendale dance school entered into the Sussex festival this year. Sussex Festival of Performing Arts is a charitable organisation offering an annual competition in all genres of dance and musical theatre. Their aim is to provide aspiring talent with a theatrical platform and a constructive report from a pro-fessional within their field. Tobias entered both the contemporary solo event for 16 years and over and the group category. For Tobias to even be entered was a massive achievement considering he has only been a member of the dance school for a few months. Not only did Tobias enter these competitions but he won ‘gold’ in the seniors event aged 16-21 years, achieving the highest senior solo event score of the festival. Tobias also went onto perform in the All England Regionals during the half term break and got through to the group finals.

Years 8, 9, 10 & 11 ROUNDERS

Teams from all year groups have successfully participated in their respective Leagues and Tournaments this year, competing superbly against all opposition. I have been amazed by the many excellent fielding skills, especially catching, and eagerness to score rounders.

Year 8’s started their season well by making it through to the finals of their District Tournament, eventually finishing in 3rd place. They continued their hard work and determination in their League games, but unfortunately the bad weather affected many results, so they did not make it through to these finals.

Year 9’s fielded enthusiastic teams and made all their opponents work very hard for their victories. The highlight for them was the 5-5 draw against Davison.

The Year 10 team also showed a lot of enthusiasm, determination and flair in all their games, sharing the honours of wins and losses equally – any loss determined by ½ or 1 rounder only! The tightness of their immaculate fielding skills and outstanding teamwork skills was constantly reflected on and praised by all opponents.

The Year 11’s took part in the traditional one-off Year 11 Tournament, especially organised as a final district event before they concentrated on their GCSE/BTECs. It was well represented with 9 schools from the area taking part. With so many games to play the evening went on quite late – but no one seemed to worry as everyone was having a good time. Pure determination, great teamwork and all round rounder's skills saw our team achieve a most commendable 3rd Place. All games were closely contested – a most satisfying and accomplished team and set of performances.

Worthing High School’s PE Achievement Evening took placed on Thursday 16h July. The guest speaker this year was Hannah Beharry, GB & England Boxer. Hannah’s story about her own personal achievements and her advice to follow your heart were inspira-tional. The PE department was proud to reward those who have represented the school so successfully this academic year. Students were awarded a number of certificates, en-graved trophies and medals throughout the evening.

The evening was a huge success and is an annual event on the school calendar. It was an excellent evening and demonstrates the huge impact sport and physical activity has on many of our students. Congratulations to all those who received certificates and awards. We look forward to building on this success next year. Many thanks to all students and carers for attending the evening and to all members of the PE Department—who without them none of this would be possible. The PE Department look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Worthing High School provided 12 young Sports Leaders to help organise, officiate and score the Primary School Cricket Competitions run by Sussex CCC Community Coaches at the Manor Ground on Monday 8th and Monday 15th June.

For five hours on each day, the students supervised each round robin group game and then the semi-finals and were invaluable to the successful running of each event. The students were patient and acted in a very mature and sensible fashion to help get the best out of all of the pupils taking part.

County Athletics success

G&T Cricket Academy training

The last Wednesday of each month has seen students from Downsbrook, The Vale and Chesswood students coming along to train with Sussex coaches at the Worthing High School cricket academy.

After successfully winning at both the District Athletics com-petition and Steyning Novices both James Lund and Alex Hop-kins in Year 9 at Worthing High School went onto compete for the County at the Sussex Ath-letics Championships. Alex Hopkins finished 3rd in his 300m race with a PB of 40.5 seconds and James Lund won the 100m sprint in 11.8 sec-onds to become Sussex cham-pion. Both students were also part of the 4x100m relay team and won gold Sussex champi-ons.

James has since gone on to run 11.58 seconds and is now ranked joint 1st in the South East and 28th in the UK for U15 age group.

Luke Moore, in 10TDJO, took part in the ‘South Coast’ Super Sprint triathlon on Saturday 4th July in Seaford, raising money for Cancer Research. He took 1st place and set the course record since the event has been held, with a time of 38:17. Luke who’s speciality is swimming saw him take a lead of over 1 minute from the start in the 250m sea swim. Continuing to hold onto first place for the whole event - 10k bike and 2.5k sprint. Last year’s winner took 3rd place! Well done Luke.

The Y8 cricket team played four games in the league against TLA, Durrington High School, Chatsmore and Angmering, playing with heart and commitment and always giving their all. A number of students were used throughout the season as out of school club commitments hampered a consistent team selection but nonetheless, the boys gave the opposition something to think about during each game. Stand out performances from Ammad Khan, Tom Caswall, Eddie Craker, Jack Willis and Owen Woodland were often key during each game. Runs flowed, wickets fell, balls were gracefully plucked out of mid-air and the boys did themselves proud. Although the team didn’t qualify for the semi-finals, they have set themselves up for a fighting chance of making the grade next year as they will have a little more experience when the competition starts next summer. Year 8 boy’s cricket team play with style in the league

The Year 9 Boys Cricket team are a shining example of the excellent work which has been going on all year at the Worthing High Cricket Academy which is run in partnership with Sussex County Cricket Club. A number of the boys have once again been selected to play for the Western Warriors and West Sussex Spartans development squads this sea-son where they have performed admirably so far. The boys have been in devastating form during their campaign this year with top order batsmen Jaynil Patel, Joe Pearcy, Muadh Khan and Luke Winter all proving dependable and unbeatable with the bat and the quartets bowling being just as impressive, further proving what a talented bunch of cricketers these boys are. Unfortunately the team narrowly missed out on a place in this years final, having reached the last two in the previous year. This in part was due to the impact of the Worthing and district youth cricketing calendar taking priority over a number of our school fixtures.

Michelle Feest, Worthing High’s Data Of-ficer and Form Tutor, picked up a ‘Silver’ European medal at the recent Cross-Country Vets Relay Championship which took place in Grossetto, Italy, in May. Competing in 5-year age bands, Michelle qualified to run in the V45 age category. She said, “all European competitors raced for their countries in a team of 3; my other two team mates, from Winchester and Harborough Athletic Clubs, were both great runners, so I felt a little pressure to run my leg (2 kilometres) as fast as possi-ble as I didn’t want to let the team down. I have never run so fast at this distance and as a team we completed 6k in a time of 23:36. Interval training sessions at my local running club, Worthing Striders, helped me prepare for this event and it was great to gain ‘Silver’ for Team GB and stand on the podium!”

Congratulations to Imogen Mitchell who reached the final of the County Schools Chess Championships. She has recently taken up archery too and is proving to be quite a natural. Well done Imogen, keep up the good work!

Two years ago I applied to take part in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan. The World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of nearly 30,000 Scouts from almost every country in the world who, for ten days, live together and experience each others cultures, take part in exciting activities and have an amazing adventure. My application was accepted and I had to attend a selection camp. I was very lucky to be one of 36 people that have been selected to represent the West Sussex District. Since then we have been on lots of training camps and everyone has become one big family. There’s so much more preparation for this than you would think, from team building and getting to know your Unit to learning Japanese culture and etiquette. It has come around so quickly! We will be leaving the UK on the 24th July for Japan. We will spend the first 3 days in Tokyo visiting various locations including the Sky Tree, Tokyo Live and Joypolis. In our Patrols we have also planned other places to visit as well. We then travel to Yamaguchi Prefecture for the Jamboree which lasts for 10 days. There are so many activities every day and we will also visit Hiroshima and work in the local community. I will be making loads of new friends from all around the world that I hope I will stay in contact with for years to come. After the Jamboree camp we will be going in pairs all around Japan to live with a Japa-

nese family for 3 days. We will be living, eating and spending our days just like them. We will be going out with them and learning a whole new culture and way of life. It’s going to be a once in a lifetime experi-ence with amazing people, and I will come back a changed, better person!
