P.E and Sport this year We have continued to increase the amount of
opportunities that Hollybrook provide this year.
We have continued to work very hard on boosting
the profile of sport at Hollybrook and make this a
key characteristic of our school. We have
continually done this for the past 3-4 years,
adding more sports to our portfolio. This year we
went even further and entered more events and
more teams. In several tournaments we took
over 20 children. We have entered a wide range
of sports: cross country, table tennis, handball,
football, badminton, hockey, cricket, swimming, netball and athletics. Within these
events, there have also been separate categories for girls, boys and different year
groups. Amazingly, we have medaled at every single event! Including the
different categories, we have medaled in 14 different events this year: an
incredibly successful year. We’ve won several, placed runners up in a lot and earned
a few bronzes. As well as city events, we have also continued to run our ‘in school’
sport events that enables all children to participate in competitive sport events: a whole
school dodge ball event, house football event and Sports Day. We have also continued
to hold cluster events for Year 6 so that every child in Year 6 has had the chance to be
competitive against local schools: something we look to continue next year. The
introduction of 5 minute ‘workouts’ has also helped to increase participation this year in
all year groups.
More than half the school have represented our school in the City School Games events
which is outstanding. Our participation rates in City School Games events have greatly
increased. We haven’t yet got our final figures (where we place in the city for
participate rates) but we will publish these when we have them- the City School Games
organisers provide the statistics. This overall stat does not include the approximate 100
additional football opportunities that have also been provided, because they are not run
by the School Games organisers.
The opportunities that we provide have taken a lot of time and effort from all the
staff/parents involved. A big thank you to the parents who have helped to transport the
children, wash kits and support the children at these events. We are not as fortunate
as other schools that have fields/large playing areas to practise on and mini buses to
transport their children to the events. Also a thank you to all HJS staff who have helped
coach children this year and support the children at these events: especially Mrs
Norton, Mr Milligan and Mr Choudhury. We will continually attempt to increase the
sporting opportunities at Hollybrook and hopefully be as successful as we’ve been, next
year. If we continue to have support from keen parents and staff, there is no reason
why we can’t. Our new trophy shelf is bursting with silverware!

Summer Update
SOLID SHOW AT THE HAMPSHIRE GAMES
Another trip to Aldershot Military stadium for us this year, for the Hampshire Games.
This year, we were invited to play in the girls and boys football tournament after both
teams finished as runners up in the city tournaments. We also won both the city netball
tournament and the city league. Having qualified convincingly for netball, we chose to
send this team to participate at the Hampshire Games.
At the start of the day, the children had the opportunity to parade their school name
around the track, participate in a mass warm up, listen to an inspirational speech from
a Commonwealth volleyball player and watch a Rock Challenge winning performance.
After setting up our gazebo at the netball courts, we got started and played our first
team of the day: Greatham. We went 2-0 down within the first 5 minutes but managed
to finish on 3-3 at half time. After a ‘pep talk’, we fought back after half time and won
7-3 overall. A clear demonstration of resilience, determination and never giving up.
Unfortunately, in the next game we lost to South Farnborough. However, we then went
on to win and dominate our next three games: beating Botley 9-0 was yet another
highlight.
Overall we won 4 games out of 5 and finished second in our group, with 20 points.
Unfortunately only the team who finished top of the group went through to the
knockout stages, so South Farnborough were the only team to go through finishing first
on 21 points.
Despite this, we were very pleased with our efforts at the Hampshire games and
enjoyed playing at a Hampshire level. Thank you to all the parents who helped make
this happen: especially those who were there on the day.
Hetti: My Hampshire Games experience was the best sporting event I’ve been to ever!
The opening ceremony was unique and will be remembered forever. I especially loved
walking around the track with everyone whilst I took the image in. Working as a team
was the best part! Even though we didn’t win, we played really well and it was an
amazing experience.
Sakina: I really enjoyed meeting a famous sportsman: one of my favorite parts was
walking around with him on the athletics track. We worked well as a team when we
played netball. The challenge zones were really fun too.
CELEBRATING THE CRICKET WORLD CUP WITH SILVERWARE - WE’RE ON TV!
On Tuesday, Hollybrook took 2 teams (20 children) to a cricket tournament at the
Sports Centre. Happily, the weather relented after a bit of morning rain and we had an
action packed full day down there.
Six teams participated in a round robin event, meaning every team played 5 games. On
top of that, the children also received a fun and exciting coaching programme.
Before the tournament, we worked particularly hard on our fielding and catching and
that was evident in the tournament. All the children contributed towards the team's
results as everyone batted and bowled.
Both our teams won 3 and lost 2 in their 5 games meaning they finished 2nd and 3rd,
which was a tremendous effort. Everyone loved the event, which was brilliantly
organised and as a result we all had a fantastic day. All the children walked away with a
Cricket World Cup t-shirt and a trophy that confirmed their success. Our Year 6 team
finished 2nd and our Year 5 team finished 3rd: looking good for next year! Check out the
link below to see us on Solent TV.
Spencer said “It was fantastic trying out a different sport and I loved performing in
front of the camera!"
Abdu commented "It was a great day, the games were fun and it was brilliant to get
our trophy."
And Ronnie said "I really enjoyed fielding and being an important member of the
team. It was a brilliant experience!"
Well done all of you: more trophies for the cabinet.
Mr Milligan
The children were filmed and interviewed by Solent TV- check out the link below! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mzvwp1TPrY
GOLD, SILVER AND BRONZE At the end of last half term, we participated in the City Athletics tournament.
This is always a great event to attend at the Sport Centre, with over 400 children in
attendance. Children participated in a range of individual events: short and long
distance running, relays, triple and long jump and throwing events.
All children from our school (24 of them) who participated presented an excellent
attitude and all tried their best which is all we want from them. Fantastically, we won
three golds, two silvers and one bronze position in a range of events. Sophie, Kianoosh
and Okechukwu won gold in sprint events: the best in the city. Imogen earned silver in
the long distance and Summer a silver in the throw. Our Year 3 boys also picked up
bronze medals in the Year 3 boy relay. Incredible effort!
I’m very proud of all the children who represented the school, you all did great. Again,
thank you to all the parents that helped at the event too!

SUCCESS IN OUR 1ST YEAR AT THE
SWIMMING GALA
What a brilliant event. Six boys and six girls from across Year 4-6 participated in the
City Swimming Gala. All children had to compete in an individual event and at least two
medley/freestyle relay events. They also participated in a boys and girls cannon as well
as a whole school cannon (like a relay). A lot of swimming!
All of them behaved fantastically and gave it their best efforts. They all raced in heats
and all their individual times were recorded. All of these times are added and output an
overall winner in three sections: overall girls, overall boys and overall school. Having
won several heats, finishing 2nd in 6 races and a few in third, we were delighted with
our performance.
As you can see, our best result was our
Year 6 girls’ team finishing in 2nd place:
considering 2 out of 3 of the girls were
Year 5, this is an excellent result. Overall
our girls from Year 5 and 6 finished 3rd,
claiming the bronze medals: again a
fantastic result - Summer from Year 4
swimming up a year for Year 5 makes it
even better. Along with some good
results from the boys, as a school we
finished in 5th place overall. We will
certainly be signing up to this event next
year- great experience all round.

GOLD! IT’S ALL IN THE WRIST!
After months and months, the badminton tournament finally happened thanks to the
City School Games organisers. Mrs Norton and I put a lot of effort into training these
children on Fridays after school so we were very glad to hear that the tournament was
still going ahead having been postponed from earlier in the year. A lot of the children
made rapid progress in these sessions which was very satisfying. Children went from
not being able to serve, to being able to do skillful drop shots and smash shots.
This was a doubles tournament so the children were paired. We entered one team into
the girl’s tournament, entered another into the boy’s tournament and entered two
teams into the mixed tournament.
All the children played great badminton and they should all feel very proud of their
efforts - they all won more games than they lost.
Our all girls’ team (Mansi and Nyesha) were ruthless and dominated every game they
played: this meant they went on and won the girl’s tournament: Hooray! They are the
best in the city!
Our boys’ team (Reece and Ben) didn’t do as well (placing 5th) but they had plenty of
tough competition and they won games too. Great effort.
Our mixed teams again won many games. One mixed team (Hetti and Richard) finished
3rd and took home the bronze medal: very well done. Our other mixed team (Imogen
and Pranav) finished just behind in 4th place: cracking effort.
Overall, Mrs Norton and I are proud of what they have achieved. Whether that’s
winning a medal or improving their own personal game.
Until next year.

WATER SAILS TO VICTORY
Thankfully, we eventually managed to rearrange our Sports Day and it was great!
Usually lasting a whole day, we managed to squeeze in all of our activities from 9 until
12. Children from across the year groups demonstrated excellent sporting skills,
determination and team work all day. The team chants were so much better this year:
they provided a great atmosphere. Children battled it out in their house groups to earn
a chance to clinch the Sports Day Shield at the end of the day. The points tally between
the house groups fluctuated throughout the day and the children were constantly
updated. It was lovely to see how enthusiastic the children were and to see children
wearing their colours. Bonus points for those who decorated their t-shirts for the event.
All children participated in a range of events including long jump and javelin. The races
were competitive and provided children the opportunity to run on a real race track.
Every house group managed to win an event and all did very well in the multi-sport
sections.
The purpose of our sports days are to dedicate the majority of a day to sport, increase
physical activity, inspire children, get them to work collaboratively and to experience
competition. This includes winning and losing. It was very evident that our children are
excellent at sportsmanship and demonstrate the core values of the school.
Here are the final standings:
1st: Water
2nd: Earth
3rd: Air
4th: Fire
I would also like to say a special thank you to all the staff that helped to make this a
smooth and successful event. Also thank you to the parents who helped walk to and
from the event with our children, those who helped set up and tidy away and to those
who came to watch. Another thank you to the excellent USH students who helped run
the stations.
Next year, we aim to have a parent’s race. Until then…
Mr O’Brien
The Hollybrook House Cup Hollybrook’s annual football event came to a close last Friday. With all the group games finished
and over 100 children (anyone could enter) throughout the school having participated, the
outcome of the finals were highly anticipated. The children who were selected for the finals
were picked for their attacking and defensive contributions in the group games, also good
sportsmanship and boys/girls mix.
The whole school came out to watch both the lower phase finals and the upper phase
finals on Thursday. We had superb professional commentary from Mr Milligan (on the
microphone) and also clear officiating from Mr Choudhury during the matches. We also
had a range of cheerleaders who helped hype up the crowd and build atmosphere. The
cheerleaders formed a guard of honor for the players as they entered the pitch.
Here are the scores:
Lower Phase
Water vs Earth
3 - 0
The game was very even. Both teams had several chances on goal but Water proved to
be more clinical. Harper scored 2 goals - one of his goals was a cool tidy finish from a
cross where he hit it first time into the corner. Well done Water!
Upper Phase
Fire vs Earth
0 - 0
After full time - went to penalties
Again this was another even game full of great attacking attempts and strong defensive
displays. The game could not be settled in the time given so it went straight to
penalties. Three children per team stepped up to take a penalty for their team (city
rules). In front of the whole school, this provided great experience of pressure for these
children. All of the crowd showed respect during the process which was great to see.
After several penalties taken and missed, Ali saved a penalty taken by Nyesha. This
meant Earth won on penalties. Well done Earth!
