On an overcast Wednesday evening in mid-July, the Members of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce got together at Uncle Vinny’s Ristorante & Pizzeria and enjoyed an outdoor extravaganza complete with heavy Uncle Vinny’s. After being serenaded by the unique Playboys, President Gail McCloskey made a few announcements and then the prizes began to roll...Cindy Mears captured her portion of the 50/50 Prize, while the host portion was donated to The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce. Vinny Doria captured a Fusing Glass Design from Dottie Herman, while Karl of Artful Living Group took home two tickets to the 20th Annual Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival courtesy of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce. Vinny Doria (who purchased 40 tickets) next won a 2 Hr. FREE FACEBOOK Lift courtesy of Carolina Beach Babe, while Louise May took home a Canvas Giclee provided by Joshua Images. Cynthia Remahl next won a Fusing Glass Design by Dottie Herman, while Becky Coley took home a $25 Gift Certificate from Touche’ . Footprints – Local Artisans Boutique is a new shopping experience for Carolina

Beach. Opened by Trisha Rogers in May, the shop is comprised of booths that can be

rented by local artists and crafters to showcase and sell their work. Originally offering

the work of three artisans, Footprints now features the talent of twelve individuals, and

still has room for a few more (although spaces are filling quickly). Merchandise in-

cludes an array of original items, including paintings, home décor, pottery, crocheted

items, shabby chic furnishings and natural bath and body products. Visitors to Carolina

Beach who are looking for a tangible memory of their trip can find many perfect items

that are locally made – a great alternative to mass produced souvenirs that can be

found at any tourist spot. The concept for Footprints is one much like an artist coopera-

tive. By pooling resources, many individuals are able to have their own “mini boutique”

within a larger retail space that would not have been feasible to lease and run individually. In

addition to working together to cover the overhead of the space, everyone works together

to promote the boutique, and subsequently, each others businesses and artwork.

1. All entrants should submit original representational artwork

of The 20th Annual Seafood, Blues and Jazz Festival.

2. Eligible entries must be a flat work of art, which includes:

watercolor, pastels, acrylics or oil. Please do not submit work on stretched, framed canvas or canvas board.

3. Flat work must be no smaller than 11” x 14” and no larger

than 18” x 24”

4. Entries with 2013 Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival lettering

is prohibited and such entries will be disqualified.

Fort Fisher to host “Information Technology: Communications in

Civil War”

The Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue is soliciting donations to help fund our trip to the National Lifeguard Competition at Manhattan Beach,

California! During the early season, we held fundraisers to raise

money to send us to the Regional Competition held at Nags Head.

At the regionals, we placed 1st and 2nd in multiple events and feel

we can compete at a national event. Your donation is tax-deductible

and would be greatly appreciated and will go toward us representing

Carolina Beach at a National Level. If you would like to donate,

The Veggie Wagon

delivers to Whole Foods

A local producer of specialty foods has successfully introduced

its products to the Wilmington Whole Foods store.

Max and April Sussman, founders and owners of Carolina Beach-based The Veggie Wagon, delivered their first or-der on July 19, according to the company’s news release. Whole Foods Market now sells The Veggie Wagon’s Pick-led Okra, Spicy Pickled Okra, Pickled Zucchini, Spicy Pickled Zucchini, Jamaican Jerk Pickles and Honey Haba-nero Hot Sauce.

The Sussmans say that, while they have been stocking their products at various small shops and farmers’ markets for years, Whole Foods will give them the added exposure of a nationally recognized name.

“We’ve been looking to grow into a larger market so our products are more accessible,” April Sussman said, in the release.

“We’ve been searching for a national partner that has a proven retail and distribution model, and Whole Foods really fits that bill,” said Max Sussman, in the release. “It’s really cool to be working with such a large company that has a small-company mentality. Their policies and the way that they run their store make it very, very easy for small producers to work with them.”

Message From The President

Dear Members:

I am sure you are all aware that 2013 is an Election Year on Pleasure Island and specifically Carolina Beach

where we have multiple candidates vying for Mayor and Council. Unlike some Chambers, we are non-

partisan and do not endorse any candidate for public office in any way. As you may have heard, it was with

great sadness that Mike Worley had to step down as our 2013 Chair due to the fact that he is a candidate for

Carolina Beach Town Council and our Charter does not allow this situation. We would like to thank Brant

Barnwell for stepping up to finish out the year. We wish all candidates the best in the coming election and as

a refresher, we would like to share our Electioneering Policy with the Membership, so there will be no misun-

derstanding in the months to come.

Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce Electioneering Policy This document is to clarify the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce policy on formal or informal electioneering by local, state and/or national political candidates or their representatives, in direct proximity to, prior to, during and/or after any Chamber-sponsored events including all Festivals, Music Concerts, Business After Hours, Business Before Hours, Member-Guest Socials, individual networking functions and/or any other purpose-formed initiatives that the Chamber endorses or sponsors directly.

The Chamber’s current By-laws already define its status as a 501(c)(6) Not-For-Profit corporation based on an inal-ienable and inviolable agreement with the IRS. That agreement states specifically that: “No substantial part of the activities of the corporation (sic Chamber) shall participate or intervene in directly or indirectly (including the publish-ing or distribution of political statements) any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for pub-lic office. Notwithstanding any other provisions of these articles, the corporation shall not carry on any other ‘electioneering’ activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c) of the Code, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under Section 170(c)(2) of the Code.”

For our purposes, the definition of “electioneering” shall be: To actively endorse, promote, advertise, or work for the success of a particular candidate, party, or ticket in a formal or informal government election. Electioneering would also include creating venues and opportunities and directly supporting the physical distribution or dissemination of any election, campaign or platform materials; including printed or unprinted campaign literature, pamphlets, signs, banners, placards, buttons, clothing, hats or other specific or non-specific materials relating to the election to a public office of any kind.

Having clearly stated this policy precludes “Electioneering,” as defined herein, at any Chamber sponsored events, it should be carefully noted the Chamber fully endorses and supports the US Constitution’s 1

st Amendment right to free-

dom of speech. As a community organization, the Chamber strongly supports and endorses the right of every Ameri-can citizen, including the membership of its organization, to take any and every opportunity to inform themselves, and their peers, of the policy positions of candidates upon whose representation they rely for governance. Further to openly and actively discuss and engage with candidates of all parties regarding their various platforms, positions, public policies, issues, concerns and ideals; and to avail themselves whenever possible of all information necessary to make an informed voting decision; and if possible, to do so wherever and whenever reasonable including any and all Chamber-sponsored events, Festivals, Music Concerts, Business After Hours, Business Before Hours, Member-Guest Socials, Ribbon Cuttings, individual networking functions and any other purpose-formed initiatives that the Chamber endorses or sponsors directly.
