General Principles1. The objective of clinical practice of internal medicine is service to humanity regardless of race, creed, political affiliation and religious belief. It should be beyond professional, financial, and personal gains.

2. The guiding principle in the clinical practice of internal medicine/subspecialties should be primum non nocere (do no harm) and the Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,”).

3. Proper decorum should be practiced at all times, in keeping with the Hippocratic Oath, International Code of Ethics, the Code of Ethics f the Philippine Medical Association and the Code of Ethics of the Philippine College of Physicians.(details available upon request) PMA Code of Ethics: https://www.philippinemedicalassociation.org/pma-codes.phpPCP Code of Ethics:http://www.pcp.org.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=357%3Acode-of-ethics&catid=80%3Acommittee-on-ethic

4. The general ethic principles governing a group of internists equally apply as well to the individual practicing internist.

Duties of the Internists to Patients

1. The patient has the right to choose his/her physician.

2. The internist is under no obligation to accept a patient, especially if the case is not within the scope of his/her expertise except in emergency cases.

3. The internist should always respect the wishes of the patient if able or the family as far as the management of the patient is concerned e.g diagnostic procedures and treatment after explaining the risks and benefits as well as the long-term financial costs.

4. The internist shall not prescribe, dispense or provide secret benefits/remedies, radical care or exhibit testimonial treatment successes without scientific basis.

5. Professional fees should be commensurate to the services rendered, ability to pay of the patients with due consideration to the difficulty/seriousness of the case, the expertise and experience of the internist as well as the prevailing fees in the community/hospital.

Duties to Colleagues

1. Mutual respect and cooperation should always be observed with the end in view of the patient’s welfare and the guiding principles of the clinical practice of internal medicine should always be the Golden Rule. (“Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,”).

2. The internist should avoid making incriminating statements and divulging opinion that may be detrimental to the practice of a colleague without compromising the welfare and interest of the patient.

3. Free medical service should be given to active as well as retired medical practitioners and his/her 1st degree dependents.

4. Fee-splitting/commissions/rebates/solicitation of patients and professional services given by clinics and medical centers are not allowed.

Duties to the Community

1. Assistance to the judicial authorities when called upon for advancement or administration of justice as long as the rule on privileged communication is not violated should always be given.

2. No false advertisement or propaganda should be employed with the purposed.

3. Participation in civic actions or mercy missions should be encouraged.

Warnings may be given by the internists to the public concerning false pretences, unproven of fraudulent medical practices/quackery.

Relationship with Paramedical and Pharmaceutical Companies

1. The internist should not secure or solicit monetary or financial support for personal gains except for purposes of CME.

2. The practice patterns of the internist should not be influenced by his/her relationships with pharmaceutical/technical industries.

3. The internist should cooperate with safe guard and the interest, reputation and dignify of the individual, paramedical and pharmaceutical entity as long as they do not violate their respective Code of Ethics.

4. The internist should not allow his/her name to be used in the promotion of drugs, diagnostic procedures, treatments for commercial purposes except in scientifically approved grounds and research supported by scientific facts and empirical data.

Group Practice

1. The internist can practice or join a group of physicians of different specialties provided that professional ethics of each specialty is observed at all times.

2. Professional fees may be collected by the group or individually depending upon the agreement of every party involved with the patient and based upon the capabilities and expertise of each member.

General Provisions

1. The International Code of Medical Ethics, the Medical Ethics of the Philippine Medical Association, the Code of Medical Ethics of the Philippine College of Physicians, and its subspecialties and the Citizen’s Charter will cover events or priorities not included in this Code.

2. Implementations, sanctions and amendments can be done anytime by the board of directors as recommended by the Committee on Code of Conduct/Ethics.
