    FRIARS HOST MAINE IN TWO-GAME WEEKEND SERIESProvidence College will play a two-game home weekend series againstNo. 9/9 University of Maine beginning on Friday, December 3 at Sch-neider Arena. The two teams will complete the series the followingnight at 7:00 p.m.

    HOME SWEET HOMEProvidence is 3-0-2 at Schneider Arena this season. The Friars defeatedNortheastern, 3-2, in the season opener at home on October 8 beforegoing on a ve-game road trip. The Friars then posted home wins overUMass (3-2 on 10/30) and Merrimack (2-0 on 11/5) before skating to 3-3

    overtime ties against Vermont (11/6) and Northeastern (11/19). The Friarshave outscored opponents, 14-10, in ve home games.

    SCOUTING MAINE The Black Bears have not played since November 21 when they were dealta 4-1 setback at Boston College. Maines Marc Nemec scored in the secondperiod to even the game, but BC scored two late goals in the period andadded an empty netter in the third. The Black Bears nished with a 39-23advantage in shots. Spencer Abbott leads the team in scoring with 16points (8 g, 8 a), while Gustav Nyquist (4 g, 11 a) is second with 15 points.In goal, Dan Sullivan has played in nine games and has a 4-3-1 record, a2.62 goals against average and a .885 save percentage.

    SERIES HISTORY VERSUS MAINE

    In 102 all-time meetings between the two teams, Maine leads 60-37-5,including a 24-20-2 edge in Providence. Last season, Maine took therst two games by the same 3-1 score at Alfond Arena, before the Friars

    FRIAR QUICK NOTES The Friars, who are unbeaten at home this season (3-0-2), will play three of their next four gamesat Schneider Arena. PC is seeking its rst win over a ranked team this season. The Friars have held opponents to two goals or less on seven di erent occasions. Providence improved to 3-2 in non-conference games this season after the win at Holy Crosson Saturday, November 27. Providence College is 3-1 in its last four road games. Eleven out of the 12 Providence goal scorers this season have two goals or more.

    SIBLING RIVALRYIan OConnor and his younger brother, Brice OConnor, a freshman defenseman on the Universityof Maine team, will face o against each other for the rst time in their collegiate careers. Ian isa co-captain and ranks second on the Friars with 12 points (3 g, 9 a). Brice has played in threegames, including two league contests in his rookie season. The last time a PC player faced o against his brother was during the 2005-06 season when Tony Zancanaro battled Brad Zancanaroof Boston University.

    FRIARS ENJOY SIZZLING NOVEMBER The Friars nished the month of November with a 4-1-2 (.714) record, the best winning percentagein November since the 1997-98 squad had a 7-2-1 record (.750). PC outscored opponents, 17-15,in November as senior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) led the way with eight points (4 g, 4 a).

    FARRER PROVIDING SCORING PUNCHSenior assistant captain Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) already has career-highs in goals (3), assists(5) and points (8) through 14 games this season. Farrer, who has not played a full season becauseof injuries, had a previous career-high of four points, which he set in his freshman and sophomoreseasons. He amassed 10 points (1 g, 9 a) in his rst three seasons at PC.

    MacKINNON LEADING FRIARS IN SCORINGKyle MacKinnon leads the Friars in scoring with nine goals and 14 points. He has two multiple-goal games, including three goals against Alabama-Huntsville on November 12. MacKinnonsnine goals rank second in Hockey East, while the 14 points rank eighth. Last season, MacKinnondid not score his ninth goal until the 26th game and this season he has at least one goal in six of the 14 games. In 34 games last season, MacKinnon nished tied for the team lead with 12 goalsand led all Friars with 25 points.

    FIRST IN LINE The PC rst line of seniors Ian OConnor (Londonderry, N.H.), Kyle MacKinnon and Ben Farrer haveaccounted for 15 of the teams 35 goals this season. In all, the trio has contributed 34 of the teams56 points, including four of the six game-winning goals.

    FRIARS VERSUS OPPONENTS IN 2010-11PROVIDENCE SKATES PAST HOLY CROSSProvidence College defeated Holy Cross, 2-1, on Saturday, November 27 in its only game last week.Kyle MacKinnon gave the Friars a 1-0 rst period lead as he scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Seniors Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Ian OConnor assisted on the goal. Afterthe Crusaders evened the score at 1-1 late in the second period, Ben Farrer netted the eventualgame winner halfway through the third period to lift the Friars. MacKinnon nished with onegoal and one assist and junior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) stopped 25 of 26 shots

    for the Friars who had a 40-26 edge in shots.CRAIG WYSZOMIRSKI SIGNS NLI TO ATTEND PCCraig Wyszomirski has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend PC beginning in September2011.Wyszomirski is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound defenseman, who plays at The Gunnery School inWashington, Conn. He will join current PC freshman forward Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.)as the second player to come out of The Gunnery School. In 32 games last season, Wyszomirskirecorded seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points. He also is in the National Hockey League CentralScouting Preliminary rankings.

    FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATEFour Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani 00 is playingfor the Chicago Blackhawks after signing with the Stanley Cup champions this past summer. HalGill 97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is an assistant captainwith the Montreal Canadiens. Matt Taormina 09 played in his rst NHL game on October 8 for

    the New Jersey Devils. The undrafted defenseman scored his rst-career NHL goal and addedone assist on October 15. He is currently the second scoring defenseman on the Devils with threegoals and two assists for ve points. In addition, Mark Fayne 10 made his NHL debut on November22 for the New Jersey Devils. There also are two former Friars who were part of the U.S.A. menshockey team which captured the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke 77,who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, served as the general manager of TeamU.S.A. Ron Wilson 77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, was the head coach of the Americans.Lou Lamoriello 63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the currentPresident and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. He was inducted into the Hockey Hallof Fame on November 9.

    FRIARS DRAFTED BY NHL TEAMS This years PC team features two players who were selected in the NHL Draft. Sophomore AlexVelischek (Kinnelon, N.J.) was selected in the fth round, 123rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguinsin 2009. Freshman Mark Adams (Boxford, Mass.) was chosen in the fth round, 134th overall bythe Bu alo Sabres in 2009.

    RHODE ISLAND FLAVOR The 2010-11 mens hockey team has a contingent of Rhode Islanders. In addition to three players,head coach Tim Army (East Providence), assistant coach David Berard (Coventry) and volunteerassistant coach Clark Donatelli (North Providence) also hail from the Ocean State. The RhodeIslanders on this seasons team are: senior Eric Baier (North Kingstown), junior Justin Gates (Cran-ston) and freshman Derek Army (North Kingstown).

    FAMILY TIESProvidence College sophomores Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) and Alex Velischek (Kinnelon, N.J.)as well as freshman Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) are sons of former Friar hockey greats.Rooney is the son of former Friar, Steve Rooney. Steve Rooney scored the game-winning goalas the Friars defeated Boston College, 2-1, in double overtime in the inaugural Hockey Eastchampionship game in 1985. Steve went on to play in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens teamthat claimed the 1986 Stanley Cup title. Alex is the son of former Friar Randy Velischek, who wasnamed ECAC Player of the year in 1982-83 and earned All-America honors. Randy, who helpedthe Friars to the 1981 ECAC championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances (1981, 1983),played 10 seasons in the NHL (509 games). Derek is the son of former PC standout and currenthead coach Tim Army. Tim ranks rst all-time in games played (151), sixth in points (179), 11thin goals (71) and tied for fourth in assists (108) at Providence. He helped the Friars capture the1985 Hockey East Tournament title and guided the team to the NCAA Championship game. Forhis e orts, he was named to the All-America Team. In addition, John Clark Donatelli, the father of Providence Volunteer Assistant Coach Clark Donatelli, was the owner of Donatelli Constructionwhich built Schneider Arena.

    Head Coach Sixth Season Providence College 85

    AS FRIAR HEAD COACH Tim Army is in his sixth season as head coachat Providence College. Army became the 11th coach in the historyof the program. He is the rst PC alumnus to coach the teamsince his former coach Lou Lamoriello guidedthe Friars (1968-83). He also is the rst formerHOCKEY EAST player to be a head coach in theleague. In his rst season, Army led the team to a 17-16-3 overall record, including a 14-10-3 mark inHOCKEY EAST action. The 17 wins were the mostby a Friar squad since 2002-03. In addition, theFriars, who were picked to nish eighth in thepreseason coaches poll, recorded 14 conferencevictories and surprised many as they nished

    fth in the league. The 14 HOCKEY EAST winswere one shy of tying a school record. In 2006-07, Army guided the Friars to theHOCKEY EAST Tournament Quarter nals. PC recorded wins over four ranked teams,including a 7-1 triumph over third-ranked UNH. Several individuals had strong seasons for theFriars, including Mark Fayne who was named tothe HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team. During the 2007-08 campaign, the Friars re-corded 14 wins and were ranked as high as 11thin the national polls. Among the 14 victoriesfor the Friars were two triumphs at Boston Col-lege, which went on to claim the national title. The Friars also posted an impressive win overdefending national champion and fth-rankedMichigan State at the Great Lakes Invitationalat the Joe Louis Arena. In all, the Friars had 10wins against ranked teams. The Friars had a rebuilding season in 2008-09,but recorded an impressive victory at then No. 2Boston University, which went on to capture the2009 NCAA title. PC also captured the MayorsCup trophy for the second consecutive seasonand third in the last four years. Armys team continued to improve during the2009-10 season as it posted four of its wins overranked opponents and nished 13th nationallyand rst in HOCKEY EAST on the penalty kill. PCalso claimed the Mayors Cup for the fourth timein Armys ve seasons.

    AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE EXPERIENCE Army spent three seasons as the head coachof the Portland Pirates of the AHL. He posted a 99-89-32-20 mark in 240 gameswith the Pirates. In his second season at Port-

    land (2003-04), Army guided the Pirates to arecord of 32-27-13-8 for 85 points as the teamquali ed for the Calder Cup Playo s. Portland defeated the Providence Bruins in a

    rst round series, marking the franchises rstplayo series victory in six years. That season, Armys team set numerous

    records, including highest penalty killing per-centage (89.5 percent), fewest goals against inone season (160) and most shutouts in a season(17), which also tied the AHL mark.

    NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE EXPERIENCE

    Army spent nine seasons as an assistant coachin the NHL for two di erent teams. He worked for four seasons as an assistant forFriar great Ron Wilson with the Anaheim MightyDucks (1993-97) and ve years under Wilsonwith the Washington Capitals (1997-02). While in Anaheim, Army was part of the 1996-

    97 team that earned the franchises rst everplayoff berth and advanced to the secondround, where the Mighty Ducks fell to theeventual Stanley Cup Champions Detroit RedWings. That season, Anaheims team featured TeemuSelanne and Paul Kariya, one of the best scor-ing tandems in league history, as they nishedsecond and third, respectively, in the leaguein scoring. In the rst year with the Capitals, Army helpedlead the squad to the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals,the teams only appearance in the nals.

    USA HOCKEY In addition to the NHL and AHL, Army hasworked with USA Hockey. In 1994 and 1996,Army was assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. The 1996 U.S. National Team captured thebronze medal at the World Championships inVienna, Austria. Army also served as an assistant with the U.S.World Cup Team in 2004. Army also was thehead coach for the U.S. Under 18 Team at the1995 and 1996 Paci c Cup. Most recently, Army coached the 2010 U.S.Under-18 Select Team to a second place nishat the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament inPiestany, Slovakia. It marked the highest nishby a U.S. team since 2006.

    FIRST COACHING EXPERIENCE Army began his coaching career as an assistantcoach for the Friars in 1987. He spent six seasons as an assistant at PCunder Mike McShane, helping to lead the Friarsto more than 20 wins in four of the six seasons. The Friars also posted a 116-87-18 overall recordin that span, including appearances in the 1989and 1991 NCAA Tournaments. During that time, Army helped coach andrecruit Friar All-Americans Rick Bennett (secondteam - 1989), Rob Gaudreau (second team -

    1992) and Chad Quenneville (second team- 1994 and 1995) as well as NHL players Chris Therien, Hal Gill and Craig Darby.

    AS A STUDENT-ATHLETE Army is one of the top players in Friar history. He ranks rst all-time in games played (151),

    sixth in points (179), 11th in goals (71) and tiedfor fourth in assists (108). He was a member of the class with the mostwins in Friar hockey history. He helped thesquad post a 97-50-8 mark over four seasons,including the top single-season record ever atPC in 1983 (33-10-0). The Friars won 20 or more games in each of hisfour seasons as a player and reached the FrozenFour twice (1983 and 1985). In 1985, he served as the team captain andhelped guide the Friars to the inauguralHOCKEY EAST title with a 2-1 double overtimewin over Boston College.

    He also led Providence to the NCAA title gamewhere PC was defeated by Rensselaer (2-1). In his senior season, Army led HOCKEY EASTin scoring, registering 74 points (27 goals, 47assists). In recognition of his e orts, he wasnamed First Team All-America and earned theWalter Brown Award as the top American-bornplayer in New England. He also was a HobeyBaker Finalist in 1985. Army also excelled in the classroom. He gradu-ated with honors (political science) and was anacademic All-American. During his high school years at East Provi-dence, Army was a two-time First Team All-StateSelection in hockey and was named to the All-Division Second Team in baseball. He also was named the Rhode Island ScholarAthlete of the Year during his senior year in1981. That spring, he was selected in the sev-enth round of that NHL Draft by the ColoradoRockies, which became the New Jersey Devils.

    PROFESSIONAL PLAYING EXPERIENCE Army played professional hockey for the MaineMariners of the AHL (1985-86), Peliitat of theFinish Div. 1 League (1986-87) and Fribourg of the Swiss Elite League.

    PERSONAL Army and his family have always had strongties to hockey in Rhode Island. His father, Tom, played baseball and hockeyat PC and captained the hockey team in 1952-53. His grandfather, George, was the long-timetrainer for the Rhode Island Reds of the AHL. His brothers, Tom, Jr., and Bill, both played highschool hockey at East Providence High Schooland went on to play at Wesleyan and BostonCollege, respectively. Army and his wife, Sue, a former PC track andcross country star, have two sons, Derek (19)and Travis (17).
