Re- search also tells me that Mendelssohn, a horse most recently listed at 4-to-1, is from Ireland. And even more research tells me Ireland is in Europe. But I’m pretty certain Mendelssohn doesn’t feel any of that pressure, or even realize he could make history this weekend. He’s proba- bly just excited to get the race over with and have his fll of oats and hay. As the Derby winner. BEN PHERSON I’ll defnitely have some money on “My Boy Jack” since I have a boy named Jack. Even as a long shot, he has the chops to get the job done. But that’s not my top pick at the Derby. At 8-1, “Audible” has the speed to get the job done. That horse also is a stalker, and can chase down leaders should it fall behind out of the gates. My big bet is on Audible this weekend. PAT RUFF No need to “Justify” my pick. But I’ll do it anyway. Justify will win because he’s com- ing in hot after winning the Santa Anita Derby, making him the 3-1 favorite. He’s gonna get it done. GUY N. LIMBECK I really enjoy the Kentucky Derby for its history and pageantry. I try to watch it every year and love the big feld of horses and the fact the favorite almost never wins. My pick is Magnum Moon. Magnum Moon, the Arkansas Derby winner, is going of at 6-1 odds, and might have been a bit lower if not for starting in the No. 16 position. The key for Magnum Moon will be to avoid getting trapped wide, so he might try to start fast and slip into the middle of the pack by the frst turn. This year’s Bluegrass winner, Good Magic, was last year’s best 2-year-old male. He’d slipped a bit of late, but winning in Lexington has him back on everyone’s radar, and at 12-1 in the Derby, he’s a good value bet. Post Bulletin staf Ben Limburg’s second hit of the game was the biggest one of the night for his team. Limburg connected on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Rochester Lourdes a 3-2 come- from-behind victory against rival Kasson-Mantorville in a Hiawatha Valley League base- ball game on Thursday. With the score tied 2-2, Dahlton Krahn singled to reach base in the bottom of the seventh. Frank O’Hara came in as a pinch-runner and Lim- burg belted a double to bring him home with the winning run. The KoMets took a 2-0 lead with a run in the third inning and one in the fourth. Lourdes answered with one in the bot- tom of the fourth and another in the fifth to tie it 2-2, setting up Limburg’s game-winning hit. Limburg also earned the pitching victory, throwing two perfect innings in relief of starter Brady Kraling, who allowed two unearned runs on just two hits through five innings. Kraling recorded eight strikeouts. Ben Kinney had a strong start for K-M, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on six hits, with five strike- outs. Mayo’s bats come alive in win over Northfield NORTHFIELD — The Mayo baseeball team caught a break on Thursday. Northfield hit two balls over the fence in the first inning, but only one of them counted as a home run. The other was nixed when the batter failed to touch home. Mayo took full advantage of this break. The Spartans scored two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead, then added three more in the third and held on to claim a 9-6 win. “This was the best team effort we have had all year,” said Mayo head coach Tom Senne. “We have funneled a few younger players into the lineup, and they have stepped up.” Alex Prindle had two dou- bles for Mayo, and William Weick picked up three RBIs with a pair of hits. Carter Pasternak had three hits and scored twice. On the mound, “Levi DeYoung threw a solid six innings for us,” Senne said. “He worked through some control issues early and really started to spot his pitches.” Evan Kaese retired the final batter to earn the save. Ben Limburg’s second hit of the game was the biggest one of the night for his team.

Limburg connected on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Rochester Lourdes a 3-2 come-from-behind victory against rival Kasson-Mantorville in a Hiawatha Valley League base-ball game on Thursday.

Mayo’s bats come alive in win over Northfield

“We really came out and hit the ball well,” said Raid-ers head coach Ryan Bacon. “We made some nice plays in the field as well. It was as complete of a game as we’ve played all season.”

The Raiders had a host of players with multiple hits, led by Blake Hillman who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Tan-ner Dickison was also 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored as well. Julian Stacy was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs.

The Raiders pounded out 32 hits in the win.

THURSDAY’S AREA HIGH SCHOOL RESULTS

Softball• rylee Schliep went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run to pace Zumbrota-Mazeppa in an 18-2 HVL victory against Triton. Natalye Quam also had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run for the two-time de-fending Class AA state cham-pion Cougars. Kiara Boeck and Haylee Sawyer each hit a solo home run for Triton.

• Chatfield scored a run in the top of the first, as Belle Berge doubled and scored on an RBI ground-out by alexis Chase as the Gophers won a pitchers’ dual against Winona Cotter, 1-0. Chase was dominant in the circle, too, allowing just one hit, with no walks, while striking out 16 batters. isabel Northrop broke up Chase’s no-hit bid with one out in the seventh inning. Northrop also pitched a gem for Cotter, al-lowing just the one run on four hits, with 10 strikeouts.

• Tarrin Stephans pitched a two-hitter and Breanna Todd drove in four runs as Dover-Eyota earned an 11-1 victory against Fillmore Cen-tral. Grace McNallan was also 3-for-3 for the Eagles.

• Wabasha-Kellogg topped Rushford-Peterson 15-2. Savannah Larocque was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored for W-K, while teammate Olivia Passe was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. adrianna Baab and anna Schneider were both 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

Baseball

• Despite getting just two hits, Cannon Falls beat Goodhue 4-3 on Thursday, in the finish of a game that started on April 26, but was suspended that day due to darkness. Hayden Strain and Chase reber com-bined to strike out six Good-hue batters in the win.

• Chatfield’s Ben ihrke threw a five-hit shutout as the Go-phers blanked Winona Cotter 7-0. Ihrke walked two batters and struck out four.

• Seth yeatman went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Red Wing’s 5-4 loss to Mankato West. Marcus Walm pitched a complete game for the Wingers, allow-ing six hits and one earned run in the loss.

• Casey Storlie, Tate Meiners and Colby Mann all hit home runs for Caledonia in a 15-2 Three Rivers victory against St. Charles. Storlie and Evan den-stad combined for a three-hit-ter on the mound.

• Wabasha-Kellogg’s Trevor Timm doubled and homered, but it wasn’t enough as Rush-ford-Peterson erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh to claim an 8-3 win. Shawn Marg had two RBIs for R-P.

• Nate Baer pitched a five-hit shutout for Lake City as it beat Byron 10-0 in five innings.

Luke Meincke went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Josh Ma-tanich was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Tigers.

Boys tennis• Rochester Century remained undefeated this season by sweeping Red Wing 7-0. Hunter Thamert, at No. 2 singles, didn’t lose a game, beating aidan Coyle 6-0, 6-0. Century is 8-0 overall.

• Two top-10 teams had a bat-tle worthy of the postseason on Thursday, as No. 6-ranked Wayzata edged No. 4 Roch-ester Mayo 4-3 in a dual at the Rochester Athletic Club. The dual came down to No. 1 doubles, where Wayzata’s Max Liao and Michael deal held off Mayo’s Joe Brozovich and alex Lopez 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Brozovich and Lopez trailed 5-1 at one point in the third set and battled back for a 5-5 tie. Sebastian Vile, Ojas Bhagra and the team of Nick Stan and Pujan Patel won for Mayo.

Girls track and field• Century’s Kinga Mozes blazed to a first-place finish in the 100 with a 12.38 time and the 200 in 25.70 in a Plain-view-Elgin-Millville triangular. Mozes also won the long jump. Century’s alyson Welch won the 1,600 in 5:07.50 and Ellie Luinenberg the 400 in 1:02.40.

Boys track and field• Century’s Jack Fisher won the triple jump (40-feet-8) and the long jump (19-3) in a Plainview-Elgin-Millville triangular.

Girls lacrosse• Clare Brunn scored four goals and added three assists, and Mara dealing and Ocean Pater scored three goals each as JM/Lourdes dominated Northfield 16-6. JM/L led 11-1 at halftime. Cassidy Greer and McKenna Chestolowski added two goals apiece.

Boys golf• The Boyum Invitational at Northfield Golf Club produced a nail-biting finish, with Mayo posting five scores in the 70s to best an 11-team field. Mayo and Mankato West each had team scores of 298, but Mayo claimed the tiebreaker with a fifth score of 79 by Zach Stewart, while West’s fifth score was an 80. Mayo’s Micah Harber shot 1-under 71 to finish second. Jack Holtan and Nate Meyer each shot 75 for the Spartans.

• Lake City’s Brennan roth-garn earned medalist honors at an HVL meet at Pine Island Golf Course on Thursday by firing a 3-under-par 68. Roth-garn helped the Tigers cruise to the team title, too, with an outstanding team score of 291. Rochester Lourdes finished second at 311, led by Luke alexander, who fired a 2-under-par 69.
