PAW PRINTS SPRING 2020 A few times a year this newsletter goes out to over 4,000 people. Each time many of you respond by providing much of the financial support that has allowed AWL to serve the abandoned, abused, and neglected animals of Trumbull County for over 50 years. Our world is facing unprecedented times and I am requesting your assistance once again. With the recent turn of events created by the coronavirus pandemic, we anticipate unprecedented need this year. Spring, known as “kitten season” is upon us and we will experience a large influx of kittens, requiring food, medical care, and spaying/neutering for adoption. The stay at home order has halted operations of the Menagerie Thrift and Gift Shoppe and will leave a void in income to AWL for the foreseeable future. The economic downturn and job losses/layoffs will result in donors being unable to give at their previous levels, and sadly, economic instability typically results in an increase in personal instability and in turn an increase in the number of animals neglected, abused and abandoned. You likely receive this newsletter due to your great love of animals and any financial support that you can provide AWL at this time to meet these challenges would be greatly appreciated. The AWL will be grateful for any and all gifts, no matter the size, particularly during this trying time. Thank you and stay safe. Pepper received her second chance at life in March 2019. It was a cold, snowy day when AWL Humane Agentsreceived a call about a dog that had been left behind by her owners when they moved away. It soon became apparentthat Pepper had been abandoned and was left in grim condition. Pepper was curled up in a small plastic dog housesurrounded in snow and wet blankets. The agents had to take their time to coax Pepper out of her house. It wasshocking to see a dog in such an emaciated and weak state. Pepper was seized and brought to a local veterinary clinicfor evaluation. During initial veterinary examination, Pepper weighed in at only 24 pounds. You could easily see her ribs, spine, hip bones and even skull bones. She was dirty, her nails were

It was a court case that lasted months. Finally, in September, thecase was finalized. Pepper’s previous owner was found guilty. However, Pepper was still waiting to find her forever home.Because of her past, Pepper needed a special home. She wasreactive with her food and was never properly socialized withother animals. Pepper needed a family that was willing to lookbeyond her past and work with her in ways no one ever had. Thatglorious day came at Christmas. Pepper found the family she hadbeen looking for! It was a bittersweet day to the shelter staff asPepper walked out the door to her new life. She had become the

A life full of warm beds, cozy hugs, love and snacks! Pepper’snew parents, Karena and Michelle, said that it has been “somuch fun watching Pepper explore her new home and becomemore independent.” Pepper also “loves playing ball and is thebest at hide and seek.” Karena and Michelle said they arelooking forward to spring when Pepper “can run and play” withthem in the yard and enjoy a cookout! Pepper is even learningnew commands like “sit” and “drop.” Thank you to Karena andMichelle for adopting Pepper. Thank you for providing a lovinghome to a rescue dog. A plan ofaction was quickly put into place. Pepper needed critical nutritionmanagement before we could even begin to think about treatingthe heartworm disease. CASHEW

LADY

Cashew is a nut! He is a very adorable 1-year old Pit mix that loves to playwith his people. However when unfamiliar people are around, Cashew canbe shy and distant. This behavior causes possible adopters to overlook thepotential of this wonderful pup! Since arriving at the Animal WelfareLeague in October 2019 after his previous owner could no longer afford tocare for him, Cashew has won the hearts of staff and volunteers. He has agoofy personality and is eager to please. Cashew has cohabitated with otherdogs, but he needs to be slowly introduced to build his confidence. If you canprovide this snuggle bug a patient home where he can grow, call the AnimalWelfare League at (330)539-5300 for more information.

ADOPTABLE DOGS!

Lady’s looking for a new home! She has been with Animal Welfare

League since November 2019. Lady is a fun and playful ball of energy!

This spunky girl would do best in an adult-only home as her energy can

be overwhelming. Since being surrendered at AWL after her previous

owner could no longer care for her, Lady has become volunteer favorite.

Upon arrival, Lady tested positive for heartworm. She has since been

through treatment and is ready to find a family to love her. Lady may do

best as the only pet in her new home, but she might be able to get along

with just the right dog. We will require a meet and greet with other dogs

prior to finalizing any adoptions. If you think you might have the right

home for Lady, stop by the shelter Tuesdays-Saturdays to meet your

new best friend!

ADOPTABLE CATS!

Meet Gloria! A caring person found Gloria as an injured stray and broughther to the Animal Welfare League for some much needed care. While wewon’t ever know what happened to Gloria prior to her arrival to the shelterin November 2019, we do know that she had sustained an injury to her rearleft leg. After radiographs and a couple of veterinary exams, the decisionwas made to amputate Gloria’s leg. Despite having only three legs, Gloria isa playful, and often sassy cat that would love to go home with you. Gloriawould do best in a home without children as she typically does not enjoybeing picked up or carried. She prefers to be loved on the floor. Gloriawould also love a home with plenty of snacks! If you have a sunny spotwhere Gloria can relax, come meet her at the Animal Welfare League today!

ADELAIDE

GLORIA

Adelaide has a loving and generous spirit that is noticeable the very first time

you meet her. She is a beautiful senior girl at 11-years old. Adelaide arrived at

the Animal Welfare League in November 2019 after she was found as a stray.

She enjoys lounging around and taking in all the sights of the shelter. Adelaide

would love a nice sunny spot where she could bird watch in the comfort of her

own home. If you can provide a warm lap to lie on, Adelaide will make sure to

bring a calm, sweet presence to your home. For more information on

adoption, e-mail our adoption team at [email protected].

This feline beauty is Ingrid. Sadly, Ingrid was left in a box outside of the

Animal Welfare League on Christmas day. Although Ingrid’s story begins

with sadness, she has only looked forward towards her bright future. Ingrid is

7 years old but very young at heart. She loves people and hopes to find a

family that wants to snuggle just as much as she does. Ingrid has remained

patient during her stay at AWL but we all know she deserves nothing short of

the best! Ingrid just wants to find a family that will love her forever. She is

also very food motivated and loves snacks. If you feel that Ingrid may be the

right fit for you, please call the shelter at 330-539-5300.

MERLIN

PIPERLet us introduce you to Piper. When Piper’s previous owner began to have

health issues, they were unable to continue caring for her. She was

surrendered to Animal Welfare League in January. Piper is 4 years old. She is

an independent kitty that does not like to steal the spotlight, but will seek out

affection when you are not too busy. Piper can be playful but she likes to

decided when playtime is. She also loves napping and hopes that her new

home will provide lots of cozy places to take sleepy naps throughout the day.

Call the Animal Welfare League at (330)539-5300 for more information on

adoption.

ADOPTABLE CATS!

This hunk is Merlin. He was brought to the shelter by a good Samaritan afterbeing found as a stray in January of this year. Although his appearance may notbe conventional, Merlin is one of the best cats you will ever meet! Merlin is aspunky 8-year old boy that loves to be active. You might think having one eyewould slow Merlin down but when he is not too busy napping or daydreamingabout dinnertime, he loves to pounce and play with toys. Merlin would do bestwith a family that is social and interactive, just like him! He also enjoys beingvocal and thinks everyone loves to hear him talk just as much as he does! Checkout Merlin and his other feline friends on the Animal Welfare League’s website-awlrescueme.com.

TRIBUTES TO A LOVED ONE, A FRIEND

Adrienne Crotty

Tributes to a loved one or a friend say something special about them. The Animal Welfare League isalways deeply honored to be named by someone as their charity of choice. And, when tribute gifts aregiven, the families also receive that feeling that that person mattered. A legacy of caring is one that weall take pride in and can feel good about. Tribute gifts are so important to providing the operations andservices of the AWL. So, to those special people, we take a moment to remember them and to say thankyou for caring. May the wonderful tributes and memories of those special people live on in our heartsand in the lives of the many pets that they have helped.
