Many of you on Connecting also knew, respected and werementored by Fred during his 38year AP career in Arizona,Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota and Tennessee. He waschief of bureau in Phoenix and in Nashville before moving toKansas City in 1971. Fred died on New Year's Day, 1991 25 years ago.

I was reminded of Fred when his son, Bob Moen, sent me aphoto of the Moen children gathering in suburban KansasCity to celebrate the recent 90th birthday of their mother,Helen Fred's partner throughout his AP career andbeyond. Bob followed in his father's career footsteps and

has been with the AP nearly 33 years, currently assigned as a newsman inCheyenne, Wyoming, after earlier assignments in Phoenix and Bismarck.

The photo above shows, from left: Bob Moen, Martha Rybak (Basalt, Colorado),Helen Moen, Gary Moen (KC), David Moen (KC) and Mary Ring (KC).

If you would like to send a 90thbirthday congratulatory note to Helen, her addressis: 12564 W. 82nd Terr. Lenexa, KS 66215.

I have many fond memories of Fred, including the remarkable friendship he forged withJames H. Hale when Jim was appointed by Capital Cities to be publisher of The Kansas CityStar and how Fred paved the way for my own friendship with the Texas newspapermanwhen I came to KX.

At Fred's funeral services, Hale delivered a remarkable eulogy for his friend that touchedon their friendship and the respect Hale had for the AP. An excerpt:

"He was almost ecumenical in his pursuit of this Associated Press organization. He leavesbehind a rich legacy in that respect. As a friend, I trusted him completely. I had the utmostconfidence in him - I felt I could tell him anything and it would stay there.

"He often offered me advice. We spent a tremendous amount of time together and Iwould have to say that as Diogenes went about with his lantern looking for an honestman, he would have to conduct that same kind of search to find someone who did not likeand respect Fred Moen."

If you have a favorite memory of Fred - or another bureau chief for whom you worked -send it along to share with your Connecting colleagues.

By Hadas GoldPolitico A group of 25 media leaders has penned a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, urging him to do more to help secure the release of Washington Post journalistJason Rezaian, who has been imprisoned in Iran since July 2014.

evidence that even makes a pretense ofjustifying this imprisonment. We know youagree that Iran should release Jason and onbehalf of our organizations and journalistsaround the world, we are writing to urge youto maintain your efforts to forge a path to thatrelease.

"Americans are fortunate to live in a nation that respects the role of reporters andthe tenets of journalism. As journalists, we understand how central an informedcitizenry is to a well functioning democracy. The need for information does not stopat the water's edge. Many of our organizations employ journalists who, like Jason, operate in countries, like Iran, that do not always hold a high regard for the freeflow of information. We understand the risks involved, and accept them in fulfillingour commitment to provide Americans and audiences worldwide with theinformation they need to make informed decisions.

"At the same time, we depend on the United States and other democratic countriesto stand behind the values that Jason represents. Independent journalism isrecognized as a fundamental human right. Iran should recognize this, too, and freeJason. The United States has considerable leverage with Iran right now to pressthat point, and we urge you to continue to do so," the letter states.

New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet, CNN president Jeff Zucker, ABCNews president James Goldston, NBC News chairman Andy Lack, CBS Newspresident David Rhodes, POLITICO editor Susan Glasser, Associated Press(executive) editor Kathleen Carroll and New Yorker editor David Remnick areamong the 25 who signed the letter.

More additions to Connecting

John Willis Connecting is frequently the bearer of sad news that one of ourcolleagues has exited this planet for another realm. Whether it be a former techfrom Spokane or a wellrespected political writer. I notice, however, that we seem to have more additions to the Connecting familythan we have had subtractions. For that, I am grateful. Connecting has becomean integral part of my day. Thanks to all who make it happen.

Disagrees with AP decision

Robert Weller Re AP not releasing images of Charlie Hebdo cover: I do notbelieve that there can never be a reason to censor or not show news art, or writeabout a "news" event for that matter. In this case, I disagree. It reeks too much ofcooperating with ISIS.

Remembering Blizzard of '96

Mark Mittelstadt I'm sure many of my East Coast friends remember theBlizzard of '96 that buried New Jersey under several feet of snow. As this storyfrom the StarLedger's web site explains, it was also an event that showed thepower of continuously updated information on the Internet and changed the waynews was delivered. One of my memories was deeming myself as essentialpersonnel in a state of emergency to use the AP bureau chief car on largely emptyroads to rescue a stranded photographer.

Another view: AP SelfCensorsAnniversary Charlie Hebdo Cover By SCOTT SHACKFORD, Reason.com

Once you decide not to show an image for fear of offending people, the number of thingspeople say they find offensive, and therefore worthy of silencing, may well multiply.

So it goes today. On the cover of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo this week, theanniversary of the terrorist slaughter that killed much of its staff in Paris, you will not findany images of Mohammad. The image is a figure of God-the Judeo-Christian visualizationof him-with an assault weapon strapped to his back. The text on it, translated fromFrench, says "One year on: The killer is still at large." Even though this image does not include Mohammad, the Associated Press, nevertheless, has decided not to pass along images of the cover of the issue to its many, manysubscribing media outlets. There actually were some images available from AP contentproviders earlier, but they've been yanked. Erik Wemple of The Washington Post takesnote:

The Vatican doesn't like it, asserting that it doesn't "acknowledge or ... respect believers'faith in God, regardless of the religion." The Associated Press doesn't much care for it, either: "We made a determination thatshowing a caricature of God in this context was just as offensive as showing a caricature ofa prophet and hence decided to not to use the cover image," said Santiago Lyon, AP's vicepresident and director of photography, in a statement to the Erik Wemple Blog.

Wemple concludes that "once you start censoring, you have to do more censoring to stayconsistent." Indeed.

The Associated Press, as a private media service, has every right to decide what sort ofimages to pass along to customers, though as a former newspaper editor, I would be veryannoyed if I were a paying member to the AP only to have them tell me what sort ofimages were appropriate for me to publish. I'm the one who decides what my readersshould be seeing, thank you very much.

There is a price for letting the "heckler's veto" win and we're seeing it play out right now. When you censor not over editorial standards but over fear of a backlash (regardless ofwhat the AP says about offensiveness, an image of Muhammad holding a sign is not asexual or violent image, and the AP obviously wouldn't self-censor an image of a humanmale running around carrying a gun), then suddenly everybody is going to find any imagethat challenges their beliefs to be "offensive." We can guess full well that some sensitiveChristian souls complained about treating differently from Muslims. Rather than says,"Gosh, they're right-let's think about how we're actually making these decisions," they've

doubled down on it and made the problem even worse. It's made all the more repulsivethat the cover is obviously criticizing not God, but the behavior of the followers of religion.People are offended over not what the image says about God but about them. In 21 states, local newspapers lack a dedicated reporter keeping tabs on

Congress (Pew)

Recent shifts in the media landscape have meant big changes within theWashington press corps including a decline in the number of Washingtonbasedreporters who work for local newspapers. Between 2009 and 2014, the number ofD.C.based reporters for local newspapers around the country who are accreditedby the Senate to cover Congress declined by 11%, according to data from the U.S.Senate Press Gallery, which accredits Capitol Hill journalists.

Papers that do employ these reporters who are tasked in part with interpreting thedecisions and policies of Washington for readers back home are not clustered inany one part of the country, but rather are spread out around the United States. But21 of 50 states do not have a single local daily newspaper with its own dedicatedD.C. correspondent accredited to cover Congress.

How the Las Vegas Review-Journal Unmasked Its Owners (New Yorker)

Last month, reporters at the Las Vegas Review‐Journal undertook a remarkableinvestigation into the secret identity of the buyer of their own newspaper. The paperhad changed hands in early December for the wildly inflated price of a hundred andforty million dollars; New Media Investment Group (formerly GateHouse Media),which had purchased the paper only months earlier, reported flipping it for anestimated sixtyninepercent profit. Six days after the sale was announced, onDecember 16th, Review‐Journal reporters revealed that the acquiring company,News + Media Capital Group, which had been represented in the sale by anexecutive named Michael Schroeder, was in fact controlled by membersof Sheldon Adelson's familyand that, as many had suspected, the money hadoriginated with the casino magnate himself. "My money that the children have withwhich to buy the newspaper is their inheritance," Adelson told the Macau DailyTimes. He said that he wasn't directly involved with the purchase, and wasn'tinterested in owning a newspaper.
