GRANT SUPPORT

ACTIVE

Title:PR121769 Translational Advancement of Somatostatin Gene Delivery for Disease

Modification and Cognitive Sparing in Intractable Epilepsy. Funding Agency: Department of Defense (2012 Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs

Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program Investigator-Initiated Research Award)

Role: PI (MPI, Contact PI Carney)

Period: 09/01/2013-08/31/2016

Total Funding: $1,430,804

Time Commitment: 3.00 calendar months

Goals: This project will examine potential mechanisms of action underlying the action of somatostatin

gene transfer on epileptogenesis. Inflammation, plus the generation and integration of new brain cells,

are the primary mechanisms that will be investigated.

Title: 1R01NS077004-01A1 Direct Functional Imaging of Electrical Brain Stimulation

Funding Agency: National Institutes of Health NINDS

Role: Co-PI (Contact PI Sadleir)

Period: 03/15/2014 – 02/28/2018

Total Funding: $2,028,216

Time Commitment: 1.20 calendar months

Goals: Non-invasive functional neuroimaging is a critical element of attempts to understand structure

and function in the brain. Functional MRI has produced revolutionary insight into brain activity, but

suffers from the disadvantage that its contrast mechanism is correlated with blood flow and not directly

related to neural activity. In this study we will establish the feasibility of a technique that uses a more

robust and direct contrast mechanism than functional MRI to examine neural activity.

Title: 1R21NS081646-01A1 In Vivo Imaging of Therapeutic Electric Current Flow

Funding Agency: National Institutes of Health NINDS

Role: Co-PI (Contact PI Sadleir)

Period: 07/01/2014 – 06/30/2016

Total Funding: $462,302

Time Commitments: 1.00 calendar months

Goals: Electrical stimulation therapies such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and transcranial direct

current stimulation (tDCS) are increasingly being used to affect motor function, cognitive processing,

and executive function. Little is understood of the mechanisms or actual electrical current flows

produced by these techniques. We propose a method that can measure actual current flows in vivo.

Total Funding: $275,000

Time Commitment: 0.60 calendar months

Percentile: 24th (resubmission 10/30/2014)

Goals: The goal of this project is to test the potential of magnetically mediated energy delivery

using magnetic nanoparticles delivered through direct injection to the pons, will significantly reduce

cancer cell survival and delay tumor growth.

Funding Agency: The National Institutes of Health (NINDS)

Role: MBI (Contact PI Sarntinoranont)

Period: 09/29/2008 - 07/31/2014

Total Funding: $1,490,551

Contracting/Grants Officer: Thomas Jacobs/NINDS

Goals: In this study, our goal is to provide fundamental understanding of CED transport of compounds

into the hippocampus for the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). We will use a coupled

modeling-and-experimental CED approach to selectively target a large volume of the hippocampus.

Studies will concentrate on quantifying extracellular flows and macromolecular tracer distributions

under both normal and pathological conditions. Varying delivery sites, infusion rates, and control

conditions will be tested. For computations, tissues will be modeled as porous media and will account

for realistic anatomical boundaries, fluid-tissue interactions, and anisotropic transport using high

resolution and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging technologies. Extracellular transport

properties will be measured using pressure sensor systems and micro indentation testing. Corresponding

in vivo magnetic resonance imaging studies will quantify spatial concentrations following CED in

rodent and primate brains (primate studies will be done in collaboration with researchers at the NIH).

Such a comprehensive study, to quantify CED transport within the TLE hippocampal system, has not

been previously conducted. This study will also provide fundamental tools and techniques to quantify

bio- transport and measure in vivo transport by CED. The study will clarify the roles of extracellular

flow, tissue anisotropy, pathological changes, tissue swelling, and backflow. MR-based bio-transport
