PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
SCHOOL FETE
The Patterson Lakes Primary School Fete is being held this
Sunday from 11am - 4pm. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that
the weather is favourable for the day! The Fete committee
and a number of volunteers will be working through from today
until Sunday to ensure the day is a huge success.
Thank you to all of the families for their generous donation of
goods, services and time to support our most important
fundraising event of the year.
PLANNING FOR 2019
We are currently finalising our enrolments for the Foundation
Year 2019 with the Information Evening to be held on
Wednesday, November 28th from 7.00pm. It is also at this
time of the year that we make a request to families who may be
moving out of the are or interstate, to notify Chloe Delaney our
Enrolment Coordinator, so that we may begin to determine
structures for 2019.
WALK OR RIDE TO SCHOOL DAY October 16th 2018
Despite the damp weather it
was fabulous to have so many
families join in the walk or ride to
school day on Tuesday!
A very big thank you to the
teachers who met the families at
one of the four starting points
and also to the staff who
prepared breakfast and greeted
the walkers as they arrived at
school.
All families received a maps, and with the improved weather
conditions on the near horizon, plan certain days of the week to
meet up with other families, leave the car at home or parked at
one of our starting points, and enjoy the walk to school - don’t
wait for a special event day to do it again!
BUILDING RESILIENT KIDS IN THE DIGITAL SPACE
Many of the families who attended Susan McLean’s
presentation last term, purchased her book, ‘Raising Resilient Kids’. I purchased two of Susan’s books and I am more than happy to share them with parents who are interested in
learning more and who are interested in keeping their child safe in this space.
Chapter Three outlines her top 10 tips for parents and carers.
1. Remove devices from bedrooms. (This means parents too,
unless you have an on-call occupation). Let your kids see
that you can sleep without a phone next to your bed.
2. Follow the rules of the site. Read the Terms and Conditions
of Use and ensure that your child is following them,
especially around age restrictions. Don’t help your child lie
online.
3. Have a family online contract—what are the expectations
around safe and responsible technology use?
4. Know your child/rens passcodes and password. This is not
an invasion of privacy - it is PARENTING.
5. Be an active participant in your child’s online world. Play
and explore together.
6. Use filters.
7. Learn to say NO!
8. Know the sites, apps, games they are using and use them
as well.
9. Ensure your child is only talking/engaging with people they
know IRL (IN Real Life)
10. Know where your child is in the online world, the same as
in the real world.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS
Congratulations to the following students who won our ‘Student of the Week’ awards for Week 2 of this term. Students will receive their certificates at their next assembly. Keep up the super work everyone!
Foundation B – Ollie B for working very hard to independently write sentences with finger spaces. I’m so proud of your efforts to improve your work Ollie!
Foundation C - Noah T for demonstrating excellent responsibility in ensuring the safety of our new classroom friends – The Chicks. Thank you for all your help Noah!
1B - Layla R for being enthusiastic about her writing and working hard to produce a wonderful holiday recount. Well done Layla. Keep up the good work!
1C – Nicholas B for great creativity when writing. Keep up the great work Nico!

FOUNDATION CHICKEN HATCHING ADOPTION
We are currently hosting a 2 week chicken hatching program
in our Foundation classrooms. Each classroom has its very
own incubator with eggs and our Foundation students will get
to experience the chickens hatching from the eggs.
After the 2 week program these chicks will be available for
adoption. If you are interested, please

YR 6 GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
Congratulations to our Year 6 Girls Basketball Team who
made it the Division Finals at Springers Leisure Centre on
Wednesday the 17th October.
The girls played with great spirit and went down to three
tough schools. They won through last Friday with a buzzer
beater in overtime, to take the chocolates.

DIVISION ATHLETICS
Congratulation to the 36 students who qualified and
participated in the Division Athletics at Duncan McKinnon
reserve on Wednesday the 10th of October. Unfortunately, we
had no one progress through to region, but we had a number
of students place second and third.
Well done to the team for the extra training sessions and the
hard work they put in. Also a big
thank you to Shaun Lakeland,
Michelle Conway and Kristin
Dyer for taking the students to
the District event, the parents for
taking their children to the
Division event and the office.

CONGRATULATIONS
Hayden S (6B) was selected as part of a team to represent Australia in football (soccer) in Japan in the prestigious Tomsan Cup.
Twelve players were selected out of approximately 3000 - what an achievement! Haydo has demonstrated that he is indeed a skilled footballer and a great sportsperson.
Here is an article that was in a Sydney paper, along with some photos of Haydo and his team mates in Japan.
Congratulations, Haydo - what a fantastic ambassador you are for our school! We are all extremely proud of you!
FETE NEWS
The next best thing to Patterson Lakes Primary School’s actual fete day is the excitement that builds around the preparation and the lead up to Fete Day.
We have many parent helpers that assist with not only fete day itself, but also in helping the fundraising committee with the many tasks that need to be done, for the fete to be such a success on the day.
If you could spare any free time, we are looking for parent helpers:-
Friday 19th October, 11am onwards in the School Hall
Sunday 21st October (Fete Day) 8.30am for help with the general set up of the school fete and 4pm to help with the pack up.
We have some volunteers from the forms earlier this year, but many hands make light work... we could use a few extra!
We are also in need of a good old-fashioned electric knife for the meat on the spit stall. If someone could lend us one for the day, that would be great.
In addition, a last minute call out for parents to help with their class stalls. Some of our class stalls still need parent helpers. If you can spare on hour on the day and have not yet put your name down, please let your classroom teacher know and they can put you in touch with the class convener.
Strike Bowling are having a stall with us, HOWEVER, they are not part of the ride tickets, so are charging separately to the rides on the day.
We are extremely appreciative of all the donations and help from our wonderful parents/carers and school community.
This years’ fete will not disappoint. We have many amazing stalls, rides, and activities on offer.
Environment Leaders Carrum Foreshore Workshop
Recently the environment leaders went to Carrum beach for our last workshop. We learnt some amazing things about our native land, such as how to track and identify dolphins, getting rid of a certain weed that was brought to Australia that has infested our local areas, learning about Melbourne’s history and planting safe native plants down at the beach. Tracking dolphins is not as hard as you think. Looking at the seabird activity, the birds at the water were diving because a school of fish was nearby, the fish were in shallow areas of our bay, which meant there was a chance there were dolphins nearby.
Next we had the task to observe and identify pictures recently taken of dolphins and look for similar scars in the dorsal fin and the shape of the dorsal fin. Our next activity was learning about our native land. We were given a talk about the land we are standing on today and the original owners and their culture. We learnt about their traditional ‘fashion’, and just like we have earrings the indigenous had sticks in their nose. They go through a ritual to become and adult by getting a certain amount of cuts on their chest. If you did not do this ritual (girl or boy) no matter how old you were, you were considered a child. We helped our native land by planting fresh and safe local plants and getting rid of the weed that infested our area. It was a hard and dirty job but it was worth it because it helped our nature and our community. We had a fantastic day at Carrum beach!

Our RoboCup Heroes
During the school holidays, our two Robotics teams and their
robots went to Melbourne Park Function Centre along with
648 students from all across Australia to share, present and
celebrate their STEM skills at the National RoboCup Junior
competition. There were 648 students from every state in
Australia making up to 2000 people in attendance including
parents, teachers, organisers and judges across the Saturday
and Sunday 6 & 7th of October. The buzz in the centre was
brimming with the best and brightest in robotics, from
primary and secondary schools from every corner in the land.
The students had to perform along with their robots on both
days and complete a taxing interview, to show how they
built and programmed their robots. Even though we did not
place in the top 5 we are still very proud of what they
achieved. A very big thank-you must to go to their Mums,
dads and brother and sisters, who came along to support our
teams. It was a big ask, especially as it was school holidays.
Big thanks to the Ingram, Mills, Heffer, Helmore, Cooper,
Keen and Bellamy families and Mrs Bearup for giving up a
weekend.
