Patriots vs. Loyalists What is it? This is a project requires students to research the differences between patriots and loyalists. They then must choose a side and develop a logical argument as to why. The class will then debate. How do we use it? 1. Students begin research could be through instruction, the internet, or texts. 2. Students then take a side. They post it on a class poster. 3. Students then develop an argument about their decision based on their research. 4. The teacher then mediates a debate between the two sides where the students present their arguments. Modifications: Allow one student from each team to present all the arguments for their team. Students can be given resources to develop argument rather than finding their own resources. Extensions Students write an entire persuasive paper about why you should be a patriot/loyalist. Student must create an “ad” for their side.

Patriots vs. Loyalists

What is it? • This is a project requires students to research the differences between

patriots and loyalists. They then must choose a side and develop a logical argument as to why. The class will then debate.

How do we use it? 1. Students begin research could be through instruction, the internet, or texts. 2. Students then take a side. They post it on a class poster. 3. Students then develop an argument about their decision based on their

research. 4. The teacher then mediates a debate between the two sides where the students

present their arguments.

Modifications: • Allow one student from each team to present all the arguments for their

team. • Students can be given resources to develop argument rather than finding

their own resources.

Extensions • Students write an entire persuasive paper about why you should be a
