Empty Bowel and Full Bladder Instructions

for Pelvic Radiotherapy

Because you are receiving radiation therapy to your lower abdomen area (pelvis), it is important to reduce its side effects on your bowels and bladder. You can help do this by emptying your bowels and filling your bladder.

Empty bowel (rectum) instructions:

Empty your bowel before the planning CT scan (computed tomography) and each treatment.

follow the instructions below in case your doctor has prescribed a laxative medication for you:

1. Take the prescribed laxative tablets for 3 nights before your planning CT scan appointment.

2. Take the prescribed laxative tablets for 3 nights before your first treatment appointment.

3. Then, take the prescribed laxative tablets every night during the course of your radiotherapy treatment.

Full bladder instructions:

You will be instructed to empty your bladder on the day you come for planning CT scan and on the day of every treatment

Then drink 500 milliliter of water 30 minutes before the planning CT scan /treatment

Your bladder should be comfortably full

You can empty your bladder when your treatment session is over.

Mental Health and Support Services for Cancer Patients and their Families

Mental health and support services focus on the psychology and behaviors of cancer patients and their families. It addresses the psychological responses that cancer patients and their families may experience at all stages of the disease, as well as the other factors that may influence the disease process such as depression, anxiety and fear.

Psychologist (mental health specialist) role:

To assess the oncology patients and give support during and beyond the disease and treatment.

To encourage, guide and support patients to develop self-help skills for coping with disease and treatment.

To enable cancer patients to achieve maximum independence and better quality of life.

Provide mental health treatment and occupational therapy (activities to improve independence with self-care and daily living skills) such as relaxation sessions and hand craft.

Tips for emotionally dealing with cancer:

Write down your thoughts and feelings: this will help you to understand your feeling and what you can do to cope with it. This can help you also to avoid negative thoughts.

Accept that your levels of energy, productivity or mood are temporary less than normal: set small goals for yourself, and congratulate yourself for the small tasks that you have completed.

Talk to other people: voice your feelings to others who are close to you, and reach out to others that are in similar situations. Remember that you are not the only having these feeling.

Your body as well as your mind are important: a healthy mind and healthy body go together. Remember to take regular exercise and drink plenty of water.

Learn relaxation techniques: such as meditation, muscle relaxation, or yoga.

Ask your doctor or nurse to refer you to the psychologist when you need help.

Developed by the psycho-oncology clinic / Tawam Hospital
