f you haven’t been in a canoe in years, now is the time! Back by

popular demand, the Morris County Park Commission is again

offering its Evening Canoe Paddles. This spring, two canoe programs

are offered:

Wednesday, May 13 and Tuesday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m.

at Split Rock Reservoir in Rockaway Township.

If you are new to this recreational activity, you must first begin

by registering for a Level 1 Basic Skills Class, as it is a prerequisite

for participation in the Evening Canoe Paddle. For your convenience,

Level 1 Basic Skills Classes are scheduled at 5 p.m. the same dates as

the paddles. After you complete the hour-long class, you’ll be ready to

join the guided tours beginning at 6:30 p.m. During the introductory

class, led by American Canoe Association Level II Certified Instructors,

learn all the basics for staying safe and having fun in a canoe. You’ll

learn a variety of strokes and maneuvers, as well as how to carry andlaunch a canoe properly. By the end of the course, you’ll be confident

in your abilities and rejuvenated by the scenic views and fresh air! All

participants must know how to swim, and the cost for the introductory

program is $10 per person.

At 6:30 p.m., everyone who has completed an introductory training

with our staff is invited to join a guided paddle around scenic Split

Rock Reservoir. A naturalist points out wildlife as you leisurely glide

across the water, finishing around sunset. The cost for these paddling

excursions is $20 per person.

All Morris County Park Commission Paddling Programs are

designed for ages 12 and older, and children under 16 must be

accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, so advance registration is

required. Please dress for the weather and bring water. All equipment is provided.

EVENING CANOESkills and Paddles

As the sun sets on the humming marshes of the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township on Friday, April 10, a peculiar new species of nocturnal

wildlife begins emerging from their… cars?! Adults and kids ages 5 and older explore the darkened trails during the annual Night Hike Adventure. Along the trails, experience hands-on discovery activities that demonstrate the amazing adaptations of nocturnal animals.

Beginning at 7 p.m., join one of the groups guided by naturalists that leave the center every 15 minutes to look and listen for the creatures that are out and about.

Perhaps you’ll spot an owl flying overhead, hear a frog calling, or see a raccoon peering down from a tree. Register for a time slot between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on this fun,

educational guided walk in the woods by calling 973.635.6629. These easy-level walks over flat trails and boardwalks last approximately one hour, and cost $6 per

person. Remember to bring aflashlight!

Catch the sunset and navigate the trails by the light of the moon on an adults-only, Full Moon Hike held at Pyramid Mountain in Montville Township. On

Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. look and listen for the forest’s nocturnal inhabitants on the ridge top for a memorable view of the first full moon of the spring.

Flashlights are welcome. Appropriate for ages 5 and older.

Families with kids ages 7 and older are invited to return to Pyramid Mountain on Friday, May 15, at 7 p.m. for Bugs in the Night. Discover the reasons

insects may be attracted to light and learn how many different interesting insects you can actually attract. Take a short walk with a naturalist down to the Stony

Brook to search for some of those fantastic-looking young insects and learn about their life cycles. At dusk, return to the Visitors Center to see if you have

attracted any of their parents. Waterproof boots are suggested, since the banks of the stream may be muddy. If you like, you may wade into the stream with

the naturalist to help collect specimens. Space is limited for this 2-hour program, so register early! Bring a flashlight. The cost is $5 per person.

Butter flies – their delicate wings are works of art, their metamorphosis is intriguing, and their value as pollinators

is often overlooked. Celebrate the beauty and importance of New Jersey’s butter flies and other pollinators at

the 2nd annual Butter fl y Bonanza on Saturday, June 13, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at Pyramid Mountain Natural

Historic Area in Montville Township.

This event is packed with excitement, entertainment, and education for all ages. Enjoy a guided ‘Bug Safari,’ a

tour of the butter fly garden with a naturalist who shares fascinating facts about the amazing adaptations of the many

critters that call it home. Discover how to bring butter flies to your own yard with native plants and seeds available

for purchase, as well as laminated guides of New Jersey’s butter flies. Travel through lifecycle stations to

experience metamorphosis firsthand, and walk through the ‘Hall of Arthropods’ to meet unusual live

insects and other invertebrates. Create butter fly origami, and listen to live music and stories as you

celebrate the life and legacy of these beautiful and diverse animals.

The culmination of the event is the Pollinator Parade at 2 p.m. Join in the procession ofcostumed naturalists disguised as animals that pollinate plants, such as hummingbirds,

moths, bats, bees, and, of course, butter flies. After everyone learns the pollination

song, the procession follows performer Ken Gallipeau around the event as he sings for all to join in. Wear your

own costume and receive FREE native plant seeds to take home. You can even create a costume at the Pollinator Parade Craft station, or parade

along waving scarves and streamers!

If you’re an early bird, get invigorated with the new Hike for

Health program offered at Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic

Area in Montville Township. This series of hikes is scheduled

for the second Monday of each month and begins at 7 a.m. on April

13, May 11, and June 8. Get ready to move along at a brisk pace

covering 2 - 3 miles, finishing by 8 a.m., and leaving you energized

for the rest of your day.If you are looking to cover more ground, join the Trail

Explorations series, designed for hikers looking to explore as many

Pyramid and Turkey Mountain trails as possible. This program takes

place from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month: April

7, May 5, and June 2. With more than 25 miles of trails to explore in

the park, each hike tackles a new route.

Both programs, for adults ages 18 and older, require

preregistration. There is a $2 program registration fee for each

date. Wear sturdy footwear, and bring water. Heavy rain cancels the

program.

On Sunday, April 12, learn how to turn your kitchen scraps, garden waste,

and autumn leaves into compost in Compost Happens. We’ll show you how

worms can help the process along and send you home with some to start your

own worm bin. Your garden will love you for it, and so will the environment.

It will soon be tomato planting time! Join Senior Horticultural Program

Specialist Gwen Montgomery, for Tomato Growing 101 on Sunday, May

3. Learn some tips and techniques for a successful tomato season. A limited

quantity of heirloom tomatoes will be on sale as well.The program scheduled for Sunday, June 7 is As Fair as An English Rose.

Are roses British? Well, not entirely – but they did name a war after them, and

some of the loveliest roses are bred on the British Isles. Learn the history of the

modern day rose and get an overview on

their care. Then, we’ll trot along to see the

Frelinghuysen’s roses, and you’ll get to

take a cutting home to grow forevermore at

your castle.

Each demonstration begins at 12

BORN TO BE SHORN

Where else can you witness the hand-shearing of sheep, up

close and personal, as it was done in the past? Bring the

entire family to a truly unique and extraordinarily fun

experience. At Born to Be Shorn on Saturday, May 9, from 11 a.m.

to 4 p.m., at the Cooper Gristmill in Chester Township, watch as an

expert shearer trims the sheep’s winter fleece to make the animal

more comfortable for the warmer months ahead. Without a doubt,

we’re ready to make good use of their fleece, too!

Following the shearing, you can help with the various processes by skirting and washing the fleece, carding, spinning, and

weaving the yarn. See how the fleece/yarn turns brilliant natural

colors as it is dyed in a pot over an open fire. Make a special sheep

craft, and other fascinating fi ber crafts to take home. Top off your

day with a tour of the 1826 water-powered Cooper Gristmill. It

is the only fully water-powered gristmill in New Jersey that still

produces flour.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors (age 65 and over),

and $1 for children ages 4 through 16. Children under age 4 are

admitted FREE.

Want to get some plant-based science into your home-school experience?

Try a workshop at The Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township.Starting this spring, home-schoolers can explore the wonders of plants

and nature and get outdoors in this new educational and fun program that intro-duces plant science themes into the home school curriculum. Ferns and dinosaurs,worms and composting, seed starting, and basic plant botany are some of thetopics that are offered for home schooled students in grades 1 - 2 or 3 - 5. Theseworkshops correlate to the NJ Science Standards and are offered in April and May.

Each workshop consists of indoor and outdoor time, hands-on activitieslinked to the day’s theme, and additional take-home materials as reinforcement ofspecific lessons and standards.

Clever Composters. Learning about composting provides students with an oppor-tunity to think about reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed, andcreating a product that is useful for all gardening. Study living worm compost andmake a compost project to work on at home.

Become A Volunteer

Bluebird Nest Box Monitor

The Morris County Park Commission currently

maintains 165 bluebird nesting boxes in 11 of its

parks, creating important nesting sites for native

cavity-nesting birds, such as bluebirds, tree swallows,

chickadees, and wrens. Volunteers are needed to monitor

the boxes at Foster fields Living Historic Farm in Morris

Township, as well as at Bamboo Brook in Chester

Township. Other parks in Morris County may also be

available.

Nest box volunteer monitors are assigned to a

specific park and visit the boxes once a week to identify

the species of birds using the boxes, and how many eggs

or young they have. Criteria for being a bluebird nest box monitor include: ages

16 and up, moderate-level bird identification skills, ability and willingness to walk

through high grass meadows in hot weather, willingness to monitor about 2 hours

(one site visit) per week, and record data from April through August. Volunteers

send data reports to the supervisor. We will train new volunteers. This is a rewarding

way to spend time outdoors, get exercise, and help cavity nesting birds.

British Roots Take Holdat The Frelinghuysen Arboretum

The connections between Great Britain and Morristown, New Jersey grow stronger in 2015 as The Friends

of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the Morris County Park Commission present a year filled with

programs reflecting on gardens and plants of England and her colonies, past and present.

Why focus on England? “Mr. and Mrs. George Griswold Frelinghuysen had an English country

estate in mind when they hired Scottish landscape architect James McPherson to design the grounds

of this 127-acre estate,” answered Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education. “The

property was designed in accordance with their wishes and included a dairy, greenhouses, large

vegetable gardens, and a barn to house their prized Jersey cows. The Rose Garden was also a

nod to England as its brick path is shaped like a Union Jack, the national flag of the United

Kingdom. England has produced some of the most famous garden designers, andgardening there is a national pastime,” she concluded.

Spring’s classes include a chutney making demonstration, and a short

course on roses. There’s a chance to read your favorite British poem aloud, and be

rewarded with a traditional breakfast on Poet’s Walk and British Breakfast, and Fairy

Day includes a sweet British treat for all house-makers. Refer to the calendar listings for

all ‘Focus on England’ events.

Keeping with the British theme, Matilda’s Café, open Friday through Sunday, prepares

special English treats for ‘peckish’ visitors. Tea and Roses, a tea and tour package, is

offered on Wednesday, May 13 and Wednesday, June 10. Whilst leisurely strolling to the

rose garden, you will learn about British gardening elements. After the tour, a delightful

selection of tea sandwiches, pastries, and beverages await you at the charming café,

overlooking the very British Cottage Garden.

xplore the arts of yesterday and today through demonstrations and hands-on workshops

at the fourth annual Artisans’ Fair at Historic Speedwell in Morristown. On Saturday,

April 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., learn crafts from local artisans who demonstrate theirskills and techniques. Enjoy the hands-on activities, presentations on historic fashions and

decorative arts, and crafts for kids.

Historic Speedwell, known as the ‘Bir thplace of the Telegraph,’ has a long-standing

tradition of embracing the decorative arts. From the metal pieces forged by blacksmiths and

ironworkers at the Speedwell Ironworks, to the incredibly detailed pieces of embroidery done

by site founder Stephen Vail’s daughters, the arts have been alive at Historic Speedwell for

centuries.

Tour the site and learn about the unique art being exhibited, along with special tours of the

Vail House. The Honoree Artist will be on hand to discuss their installation. Visit the Friends

of Historic Speedwell Gift Shop located in the L’Hommedieu House Visitors Center, where

artisans have items for sale. Admission is $5 adults, $4 senior citizens, $3 children ages 4 - 16.

CIVIL WAR INVADES MORRISTOWNDuring the Civil War Encampment Weekend

at Historic Speedwell!

Step onto the battlefields of the American Civil War, the struggle that altered the political, social, and

economic landscape of the nation, and into the lives of those involved at Civil War Weekend on Saturday

and Sunday, June 20 and June 21. The Second New Jersey Brigade is stationed at Historic Speedwell

in Morristown and is the sponsor of this unique two-day event that presents the lives of Civil War soldiers more

vividly than textbooks.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the re-enactors lead activities

throughout the eight-acre site, presenting the daily lives of soldiers and culminating with a staged skirmish.

Soldiers’ camps recreate daily life with authentic cooking, dress, and general setup. Cover your ears as the

massive period cannon amazes you! Witness the musket drills, artillery drills, daily mail call, bayonet drills, anda staged skirmish each day. Marching drills include period instruments as soldiers proudly go into battle. A Civil

War-era Signal Corps group authentically demonstrates how important messages were sent between units using

colorful flags. Don’t miss the demonstration of a recreated Civil War telegraph station.

Enjoy learning about the basics of battlefield medicine for soldiers who suffered injuries or disease. Visit the

medical area where re-enactors care for the “wounded” and demonstrate how these emergency units ran during

battles. Around every corner there is something to experience.

While enjoying your visit to the past, tour the National Historic Landmark Factory Building with an

interactive, hands-on telegraph exhibit, and the Vail House that was restored more than 150 years ago. Explore

the exhibits on the Speedwell Ironworks, a granary full of early farm implements, and watch the enormous 24-

PARK ALLIANCE CORNER

T he Morris Park Alliance had a banner year in 2014. The Jets Play 60 All-Access Playground wasinstalled. With fundraising efforts totaling just less than $350,000, a new play area is available

at Central Park of Morris County for children of all abilities. The next phase at the playgroundincludes shade structures to protect the children from sun exposure, and keep the play equipmentfrom getting too hot. Donations are currently being accepted for this installation.

Fairy DayFairies once again visit The Frelinghuysen Arboretum, and to preparefor their stay, houses need to be built. Families are invited to the Sylvan

Terrace to build a home for these visiting wee folk. Greet the fairies withmusic and fairy snacks, and learn which plants and trees attract fairiesto your own backyard. All supplies – bark, branches, lichens, mosses,feathers, stones, and leaves are provided, or bring your own as long asit’s natural. Fairies shun man-made materials. All the fairy houses are ondisplay through the end of July.
