Pin Oak Lane Farm Stallions Stand Tall in the State

A year ago heading into the fall and looking forward to the next breeding sea-son the leading sires list in the Mid-Atlan-tic region was dominated by Pin Oak Lane stallions The roster that Dr Bill Solomon had selectively gathered took off over the summer with Any Given Saturday topping the list the late Rockport Harbor in second and Offlee Wild fourth Add in Corinthian in the sixth spot and the farm in New Freedom Pa had stood four of the top six

When Solomon looks for a stallion for the region that is the kind of horse he is going for ldquoThere are two kind of horses that are usefulrdquo he points out First is ldquoA young horse a grad-ed winner by a popular stallion like a Tapit or Unbridledrsquos Song Those horses are very expen-sive most of the time theyrsquore much more expensive than you can make back in the Mid-At-lantic market on stud fees Thatrsquos a difficult situation unless you can find somebody who wants to be a partici-pantrdquo

And then there is his preferred stallion ldquoThose whorsquove had successful sire careers in Kentucky like Any Given Saturday or Rockport Harborrdquo Those are the stallions who werenrsquot quite successful enough in Kentucky to keep them from being over-shadowed by other stallions and younger horses But those horses he adds are in his opinion the best ldquoThey have proven stud records they are far superior race-horses theyrsquore attractive for people who breed to racerdquo

Solomon has been doing this for a long time as Pin Oak Lane celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013 He has seen the ups and downs in the business but his business in 2014 boomed with the addition of Any Given Saturday and Corinthian And the dark horse Offlee Wild who was standing

his third season at Pin Oak Lane was mak-ing a resurgence after a few dormant years

And then came the hit in October Any Given Saturday and Offlee Wild were sold to foreign interests the former to Korea the latter to the The Jockey Club of Turkey

ldquoThe loss of Any Given Saturday and Offlee Wild is one of the difficulties in leas-

ing horses you donrsquot own on a yearly basisrdquo acknowledged Solomon ldquo[When] they get hot like that sometimes theyrsquore more viable in Turkey than they are here So the owner takes advantage of thatrdquo

Any Given Saturday led all stallions in the region by number of mares bred in 2014 covering 100 He fit the Solomon mold to perfection a Grade 1 winner at 3 he had the progeny earnings from just three crops to rank first in the region from the moment he arrived He had great numbers but not a big horse In March 2014 the big horse arrived in the form of Hoppertunity who finished second in the Santa Anita Der-by-G1 after winning in graded company the month before By the end of last year Hop-pertunity was a Grade 1 winner

Offlee Wild struggled a bit after striking immediately when his first crop came to the races in 2009 yielding that yearrsquos Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly She Be Wild

He also arrived at Pin Oak Lane with three crops to race but the support was faltering

ldquoWhen I brought him up here he was dead in the waterrdquo admitted Solomon ldquoBut there was a situation where he was freshman sire of the year and the crop he bred the year after that would be his very best crop and they were weanlings when

I brought him up As luck would have it that crop had really good stakes horsesrdquo

From that crop came Bayern who tore up the track during the summer of 2014 dazzling in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes on Belmont Stakes Day dominat-ing the William Hill Haskell Invita-tional Stakes-G1 in August and doing the same in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby in September He would then add the Breedersrsquo Cup Classic-G1 to his tally in No-vember

Solomon heard the rumblings in September that his star stallions

were about to be sold And unfortuately the timing was bad to gear up for the next year

ldquoIf you are going to bring stallions up you have to start in July right after the breeding season ends because there are other people who have the same idea especially from other countriesrdquo he said ldquoSo there is competition for these kind of horses And there are not very many in the first place if you were looking for the kind of horse I described the Any Given Satur-daysrdquo

Making a stallion in a regional market is a challenge he noted partly because they donrsquot get the huge book of mares a new stallion starting out can get in Kentucky Even a stallion like Offlee Wild was a chal-lenge ldquoHe would have bred a big book here [this past] year but Irsquom not sure he would have lasted because he bred small books in

Kentucky in his last years there and he bred small books when he came here because he wasnrsquot red-hotrdquo

Pin Oak Lane has brought in a number of popular stallions in recent years includ-ing top sprinter Lite the Fuse and Rockport Harbor The latter moved to Pennsylvania for the 2013 breeding season and immediately made an impact The young son of Unbri-dledrsquos Song covered 54 mares that year a number that climbed during the season as his number of stakes winners grew By that summer Rockport Harbor was the leading sire in the region and looked set for an in-credibly busy next season Then tragedy struck The big handsome gray contracted colitis responded to treatment but foun-dered and was euthanized in early August Later that fall his 2-year-old daughter Ria Antonia won the $2 million Breedersrsquo Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes-G1 and Rockport Har-bor was the nationrsquos leading juvenile sire

ldquoIt was quite a blow to usrdquo Solomon told PA Report the next year ldquoBut you move onrdquo Rockport Harbor currently ranks first on the Mid-Atlantic leading sires list his lead-ing earner his Grade 1-winning son Majestic Harbor

Four stallions were on the Pin Oak Lane roster for 2015 ndash Albert the Great Corinthi-an More Smoke and second-year stallion Norman Asbjornson a multiple stakes win-ner of $536600 by Real Quiet whose first foals arrived this year Albert the Great saw increased interest after the exploits of his son Moonshine Mullin winner of the 2014 Ste-phen Foster Handicap-G1 ldquoAlbert the Great bred three-times as many mares as he ordi-narily would haverdquo noted Solomon

Corinthian would have covered in excess of 60 mares had he not been sidelined by bruised hind feet which caused him to miss about half the breeding season and half his book ldquoHersquos good now 100 percent and will be back in business at the start of the next breeding seasonrdquo said Solomon

ldquoIrsquod like to have three or four horses that would breed 50 mares or morerdquo he added ldquoI think Corinthian will breed that many this [coming] year and Albert the Great bred 55 mares last year But I really do need to add somethingrdquo

There are prospects in the works for the next season said Pin Oak Farmrsquos owner who hopes to have something definitive to announce in four to six weeks ldquoI donrsquot want to say though until I have themrdquo

And any new stallion will be offered un-der a similar business plan that has worked very well in recent years which includes workable stud fees of $6000 or less and reductions for multiple mare breedings ldquoAl-most all of the breeders take advantage of the multiple mare discountrdquo he pointed out ldquoAny Given Saturday bred 100 mares in 2014 ndash I think we had one or two or three mares that were full price and everybody else took advantage of breeding two or may-be three mares They like thatrdquo He added ldquoWe hold the line though and make no ex-ceptions Once we publish those prices no-body is able to do less We price our horses extremely fairly and we give the advantage of having the multiple mare discountsrdquo

Solomon will have ties to his former top stallions with future racing prospects ldquoI donrsquot have a lot of mares about 11rdquo said Solomon who races everything he breeds ldquoI do have a number of Any Given Saturdays I have some Rockport Harbor yearlingsrdquo

But in the meantime Pin Oak Lane is gearing up for the next breeding season and the search continues for quality stallions to offer to breeders in the region a

Pennsylvaniarsquos Day At the Races A Day of Excitement and Celebration

An enthusiastic crowd turned out for the 15th annual Pennsylvania Day At the Rac-es ndash the event which celebrates and show-cases the statersquos breeding industry ndash on Sat-urday Sept 5 at Parx The fun-packed card of 12 races saw nearly 120 horses entered with five $100000 stakes and total purses of $850000 And the results were spectacular

The main events were the split runnings of the Mrs Penny Stakes and the Roanoke Marshall Jenney and Dr Teresa Garofalo Me-morial Stakes Two resulted in thrilling blan-ket finishes

The eighth race on the card the mile and a sixteenth Roanoke Stakes on the main track featured 2-5 favorite Page McKenney the bonafide stakes performer fresh off his win in the Robellino Stakes at Penn National two weeks earlier The short field of five was loaded with talent and it was the youngest in the field who got the upset

The Elkstone Grouprsquos 3-year-old Duff at 21-1 got the nod in the three-way pho-to over Page McKenney who was a nose in front of Grasshoppin

Last yearrsquos PA-Bred champion 2-year-old male Duff has had a busy 3-year-old campaign since returning to the races in mid-May The son of Candy Ride (Arg) prepped for the Roanoke with a four-length allowance win at Mountaineer Park 12 days earlier

The ninth race was the first division of the Mrs Penny Stakes for fillies and mares 3 and up The favorite for the mile and a sixteenth on the turf was New York-based Devilish Love Slightly overlooked was again the only 3-year-old in the race the fabulously consistent R Frosty One who set the pace and had enough left to hold off Alrsquos Gal and Devilish Love in another three-way photo Fi-nal time was 14391

In her first season of competition R Frosty One has five wins two seconds and a third in eight starts The Sajor Stable color-bearer won the Malvern Rose Stakes at

Presque Isle in her previous start A daughter of Pennsylvania sire Southern Success she was bred by the Gayle B Gerth Trust

The second division of the Mrs Penny was taken by George Strawbridgersquos multiple graded stakes winner Kittenrsquos Point the 9-10 favorite in the field of eight Carrying top weight of 126 pounds in her Parx debut the 5-year-old Kittenrsquos Joy mare settled on the inside early angled out in the stretch and pulled clear late to win by a length and a quarter in 14334

It was the third win of the year for Kit-tenrsquos Point after taking Keenelandrsquos Bewitch Stakes-G3 in April and Santa Anitarsquos Astra Stakes in January Earlier in her career she scored in the Herecomesthebride Stakes-G3 and her graded stakes-placings include the Grade 1 Ashland

It was the third year in a row that Straw-bridgersquos Augustin Stable colors were carried to victory in the Mrs Penny as Kittenrsquos Point joins Appealing Cat (2014) and Ski Holiday (2013)

Eight-year-old This Ainrsquot No Bull had been running for a tag this year and owner Matthew Schera and trainer Michael V Pino made a judicious claim on July 12 spending $20000 for the former stakes runner That his next start would be the same race he won two years earlier the Marshall Jenney Hand-icap seemed a bit ambitious He pulled it off in impressive fashion

Leading at every call the son of Holy Bull continued to pour it on widening by as much as four lengths in the stretch before crossing the line two and a quarter lengths

in front The payday for his new connections was $60000 a solid return on investment This Ainrsquot No Bull bred by Classic Thorough-bred XVIII has won 12 times in his 34-start career

The Dr Teresa Garofalo Memorial for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs on the main track saw another odds-on favorite get the victory

Discreet Senorita had to overcome a stumble out of the gate to record her fifth win of the year from eight starts The daughter of Discreet Cat was nimble in her recovery quickly moving up into contention and tak-ing the lead heading into the stretch It was easy down the lane as she won by nearly two lengths The first-time stakes winner was bred by her owners Dun Roamin Farm and Rosemore Farms

Race Day Notesbull The shortest-priced winner on the card was Litlmissmartypants in the second Sent off at 1-20 the daughter of Smarty Jones won the six-furlong race for $12500 claimers by a neck over Poderosa

bull The biggest return was Duff in the Roanoke Stakes He paid $4480 for the win

bull The largest field turned out for the finale a seven-furlong allowance on the main track The Congressionalhonor 4-year-old filly Su-perling won by a length and a quarter as the third-choice in the 12-horse field

Remembering champion Divine Fortune

He was simply divine Pennsylvania-bred Eclipse Award-win-

ning steeplechaser Divine Fortune Bill Pape and Jonathan E Sheppardrsquos homebred four-time PA-Bred champion gelding was a fan favorite and a highlight of the steeplechase season since rising to the upper echelon of the sport in 2007 when the chestnut won his first graded stakes

His first Grade 1 came in 2013 at age 10 the year he took home the Eclipse Award by winning the Grand National Hurdle Stakes-G1 finishing second in the Calvin

Houghland Iroquois Hurdle-G1 and third in the A P Smithwick Memorial-G1

Proving age wouldnrsquot slow him down he returned the next year in great form taking the Calvin Houghland Iroquois Hurdle Stakes-G1 in his first start then rebound-ing off of two rough trips to finish second in the Grand National Hurdle Stakes-G1 and conclude his season with a dominant sen-sational victory in the Grade 1 Colonial Cup It was the 10th time in his career he was on the board in a Grade 1 stakes

On Aug 27 at Saratoga in the New York Turf Writers Cup-G1 while leading the field as he did so spectacularly so many times before Divine Fortune struck the final jump and fell heavily suffering a fractured shoul-der which proved fatal

The son of Royal AnthemmdashMy Tombo-la by Northern Fling won or placed in 24 of 47 starts to earn $829795 But to those who love gallant racehorses he meant so much more And the sport is less bright without him a


Our 15th annual PA Day at the Races was another huge success Congratulations to all who participated in the 12 carded races which totaled $850000 in purses highlighted by five $100000 stakes (the results are posted elsewhere in the PA Report)

I would like to thank the PTHA who continues to contribute to the PA-Bred program by sponsoring our day Sam Elliott for his hard work putting the races together PARX for their hospitality and use of the banquet facility and AV work and setup and our own Greg Newell PA Day committee

March when taking the Robellino on Aug 22 at Penn National The odds-on favorite stalked the early pace grabbed the lead with a quarter-mile remaining and held off all challengers

DEVILrsquoS HONOR1993 Devilrsquos BagmdashDancing Heroine by Herorsquos Honor Bred by Mrs Henry D Paxson owned by Noreen Carpenito trained by Walter C Reese and James T Ryerson

The first PA-Bred to win the Pennsylvania Derby (then Grade 3) Devilrsquos Honor achieved that feat in 1996 during a superb campaign in which he ranked among the Triple Crown hopefuls

One of the many good PA-Breds to rep-resent his Eclipse Award-winning breeder Mrs Henry D Paxson Devilrsquos Honor went through the ring at the 1995 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale sell-ing for $35000 Trained by Cynthia Reese for Noreen Carpenito he would go on to be named Pennsylvania champion 2-year-old colt after winning three stakes including the Pennsylvania Futurity by 41frasl2 lengths and placing in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes

Grade 2 Saratoga Special and Grade 3 Ken-tucky Cup Juvenile

He earned another state-bred champion-ship at 3 by winning four stakes topped by the Pennsylvania Derby in which he earned a career-high 114 Beyer speed figure He also was third that year in the Grade 1 Super Derby

Devilrsquos Honor won or placed in 20 of 32 career starts on the flat and earned $793191 Retired from racing the big bay son of Devilrsquos Bag didnrsquot make the transition for a second

career as a show jumper and was soon in the barn of steeplechase trainer Jack Fisher

He won once over jumps and finished in the top four in eight of his 12 starts before re-tiring from racing for good in November 2002 with earnings of $810165

Among his honors was being inducted into the Parx Racing Hall of Fame in 2012

Jazz Napravnik sister of jockey Rosie Napravnik fell in love with Devilrsquos Honor af-ter first meeting him at the Fisher barn She eventually became his owner and used him as a pony at her farm in Maryland He lived out his life with Napravnik until he was put down at the age of 21 in December 2014

Pin Oak Lane Farm Stallions Stand Tall in the State

A year ago heading into the fall and looking forward to the next breeding sea-son the leading sires list in the Mid-Atlan-tic region was dominated by Pin Oak Lane stallions The roster that Dr Bill Solomon had selectively gathered took off over the summer with Any Given Saturday topping the list the late Rockport Harbor in second and Offlee Wild fourth Add in Corinthian in the sixth spot and the farm in New Freedom Pa had stood four of the top six

When Solomon looks for a stallion for the region that is the kind of horse he is going for ldquoThere are two kind of horses that are usefulrdquo he points out First is ldquoA young horse a grad-ed winner by a popular stallion like a Tapit or Unbridledrsquos Song Those horses are very expen-sive most of the time theyrsquore much more expensive than you can make back in the Mid-At-lantic market on stud fees Thatrsquos a difficult situation unless you can find somebody who wants to be a partici-pantrdquo

And then there is his preferred stallion ldquoThose whorsquove had successful sire careers in Kentucky like Any Given Saturday or Rockport Harborrdquo Those are the stallions who werenrsquot quite successful enough in Kentucky to keep them from being over-shadowed by other stallions and younger horses But those horses he adds are in his opinion the best ldquoThey have proven stud records they are far superior race-horses theyrsquore attractive for people who breed to racerdquo

Solomon has been doing this for a long time as Pin Oak Lane celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2013 He has seen the ups and downs in the business but his business in 2014 boomed with the addition of Any Given Saturday and Corinthian And the dark horse Offlee Wild who was standing

his third season at Pin Oak Lane was mak-ing a resurgence after a few dormant years

And then came the hit in October Any Given Saturday and Offlee Wild were sold to foreign interests the former to Korea the latter to the The Jockey Club of Turkey

ldquoThe loss of Any Given Saturday and Offlee Wild is one of the difficulties in leas-

ing horses you donrsquot own on a yearly basisrdquo acknowledged Solomon ldquo[When] they get hot like that sometimes theyrsquore more viable in Turkey than they are here So the owner takes advantage of thatrdquo

Any Given Saturday led all stallions in the region by number of mares bred in 2014 covering 100 He fit the Solomon mold to perfection a Grade 1 winner at 3 he had the progeny earnings from just three crops to rank first in the region from the moment he arrived He had great numbers but not a big horse In March 2014 the big horse arrived in the form of Hoppertunity who finished second in the Santa Anita Der-by-G1 after winning in graded company the month before By the end of last year Hop-pertunity was a Grade 1 winner

Offlee Wild struggled a bit after striking immediately when his first crop came to the races in 2009 yielding that yearrsquos Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old filly She Be Wild

He also arrived at Pin Oak Lane with three crops to race but the support was faltering

ldquoWhen I brought him up here he was dead in the waterrdquo admitted Solomon ldquoBut there was a situation where he was freshman sire of the year and the crop he bred the year after that would be his very best crop and they were weanlings when

I brought him up As luck would have it that crop had really good stakes horsesrdquo

From that crop came Bayern who tore up the track during the summer of 2014 dazzling in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes on Belmont Stakes Day dominat-ing the William Hill Haskell Invita-tional Stakes-G1 in August and doing the same in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby in September He would then add the Breedersrsquo Cup Classic-G1 to his tally in No-vember

Solomon heard the rumblings in September that his star stallions

were about to be sold And unfortuately the timing was bad to gear up for the next year

ldquoIf you are going to bring stallions up you have to start in July right after the breeding season ends because there are other people who have the same idea especially from other countriesrdquo he said ldquoSo there is competition for these kind of horses And there are not very many in the first place if you were looking for the kind of horse I described the Any Given Satur-daysrdquo

Making a stallion in a regional market is a challenge he noted partly because they donrsquot get the huge book of mares a new stallion starting out can get in Kentucky Even a stallion like Offlee Wild was a chal-lenge ldquoHe would have bred a big book here [this past] year but Irsquom not sure he would have lasted because he bred small books in
