ildWe believe children are natural scientists, artists, and explorers. All children benefit from creative hands-on experiences that allow them to develop a life-long love of learning, a sense of global awareness, and the cognitive and social skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Research shows that children who attend museums are more likely to achieve academic success, connect with their community, and have positive parent interaction. The ability of children to actively explore their environment has been linked to an increase in vocabulary and communication skills, an understanding of people's behavior, and creative problem solving.

Our Museum provides innovative exhibits and interactive programs that cultivate this needed excitement and curiosity. With generous help from our community partners and supporters, we are able to ensure every child has access to the Museum through field trip scholarships for low-income schools, free memberships for underserved families, financial assistance for military and veteran families, and partnerships with numerous social service agencies.

Through the seamless integration of science, math, reading, social studies, and the arts, we bring children together in four main multi-sensory child-centered learning environments – Exploration, Imagination, Experimentation, and Discovery.

The Exploration area of the Museum focuses on world cultures, social science, history, and communities. Our Discovery Sailboat and Kids Global Village feature rotating cultural exhibits that highlight different people and places throughout time, helping children to better understand historical contexts and appreciate the diverse world around them. Our Toddler Tide Pool is a marine-themed sensory exhibit designed to promote early childhood development such as problem solving and gross and fine motor skills.

The Imagination area encourages creativity, language development, emotional skills, and artistic expression. Through dramatic play, children learn abstract thinking, literacy, and storytelling. This increases their understanding of the world they live in and strengthens development in communication and social skills for future social interactions. The Imagination Stage has musical instruments, puppets, props, and costumes so that children can role-play in a wide variety of characters and situations. Children also express their artistic talents and imagination through drawing, painting, crafts, and construction.

In the Experimentation area, children make connections with science, technology, engineering, and math through a continually changing series of investigative science stations built in our own Exhibits Workshop. Through scientific inquiry and exploration, children practice critical thinking and creative problem solving and enhance their skills and attitudes for future learning. Hands-on exhibits include our Magnification Station where children examine specimens and artifacts under a video microscope and magnifying lenses, and the Magnetic Ball Wall and Wind Tunnels where they experiment with kinetic and potential energy, momentum, and the force of gravity.

ver Our outdoor Children’s Discovery Garden

captivates children with a wide variety of nature-based science activities. Children learn to appreciate and understand food, nutrition, ecosystems, and sustainability by exploring our gardens, plant nursery, composts, earthworm farms, and chicken coops. Water Wise features interactive and living water tables to learn about water conservation and pollution prevention, aquaponic gardening, solar energy, and the weather. In Base Camp, children become young archaeologists, paleontologists, and geologists as they learn about people, places, and ecologies of the past.

We are the only interactive children’s museum serving North San Diego County. We are committed to making sure that every child has access to our unique programs both at our Museum and through our mobile exhibits and programs. With thousands of underserved children in our region (including twelve low-income Title-I elementary schools in Escondido alone), our museum meets this crucial need for every child to have a fun, safe, and affordable space to grow to his or her potential.

We hope that you will consider making a gift or multi-year pledge to invest in our growth and inspire the next generation of innovators, creative thinkers, and community leaders.

Path to Discovery Campaign

Board of Directors Honorary Advisory Committee

San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum’s Path to Discovery Campaign was launched in 2011 to fund the acquisition of our new

larger Museum facility, expand our exhibits, and develop educational programs to meet the growing need for experiential,

hands-on, learning opportunities for all children.

We invite you to partner with us to inspire the next generation of innovators, creative thinkers, and community leaders. Your

investment is crucial to our growth, and together we can help children find their own path to discovery.
