JUNE SERVICES OF WORSHIP

Dear Friends of the Living Messiah, YOU PROMISED. When you joined MLC as a new member or on your Confirmation Day, you responded to the question above, saying: "I do and I ask God to help and guide me." You promised. I did, too.

HOW ARE WE DOING ON KEEPING THIS PROMISE we made to God and to MLC? First: How are we doing as a Congregation? I think we do many things well; other things concern me. Music and outreach ministries continue to be strengths of MLC and keep growing. MLC is attracting and welcoming noticeably more young adults than we were five years ago. A new young adult group is established and poised to grow. The Men of Messiah group is off to a good start. It has been thrilling to have lots of Baptisms in recent months, including several when parents and children were Baptized. We have great Sunday School teachers, yet attendance is a fraction of what it was a decade ago. The small portion of adult members in Christian education classes continues to frustrate me. (Any ideas on how to improve this? Please let me know.) Youth programs have had highs and lows. The addition of Sara Galyon to staff is a blessing. The people of MLC care about each other, the church, and sharing our gifts. The pastor loves the people, and the people are kind and forgiving to the pastor.

YOU ARE WELCOME TO DISAGREE. These assessments of our congregation are just my opinion, and the list is obviously not comprehensive. Hopefully none of this sounds like me whining. God's Church is best when we give praise and thanks for the gifts God has bestowed rather than bemoaning what is lacking.

LEAP Academy will kick off in a few weeks at Horizon Elementary in Madison.

Messiah Lutheran Church will be there serving breakfast and lunch to the children on June 12 and 13, the first two days of the two-week summer session. We have been very generous as a church in providing financial support to help fund the Academy. Now is our chance to be there in person and meet the children par-ticipating in the program.

Over the last few months, many people have asked if they could do something in addition to providing money for LEAP. This is an excellent opportunity to put a face on Messiah in our efforts to “Reach Out” by meeting some of our com-munity’s children in need. Please contact Claire Strand or John Shriver if you would like to help serve breakfast and/or lunch on June 12 and 13.

Hymn of the Month O Spirit of Life

It is believed that Johann Niedling (1602-1668), a school teacher in Saxony, Ger-many was the author of this hymn text. The hymn tune O HEILIGER GEIST, mean-ing O Holy Ghost is also used for the Christmas hymn, “O Jesus, So Sweet”. Ar-ranged by J.S. Bach, this chorale has beautiful 4-part harmony.

The text reminds us of the 3-fold person of God and is a solid addition during the season of Pentecost.

Stanza 4:

O Spirit of life, O Spirit of God, enlighten us by that same Word; Teach us to know God’s radiant love, lead us to Christ who reigns above; O Spirit of life, O Spirit of God.

F E L LO W S H I P Council Rep: Cheryl Rydbom | [email protected]

For those of us with kids in school, those of us teaching, or those still in classes, this time of year is all about the school year winding down and looking forward to a nice break to re-charge – unless you’ve already started your summer semester like my husband, William!

This is also true for Fellowship. Several of our activities or small groups are taking a well-earned break so that they can come back in August revitalized and enthusiastic.

Be sure to thank Muriel Irvin for an excellent year of Wednesday Night Cafés and Janell Zesinger for continuing to organize the Women’s Book and Social Club. Both of those groups will resume with the school year. Keep an eye on the e-news for activities for our other groups.

The next big Fellowship event is Rally Day on August 6, 2017. De-tails to follow. Can you believe we’re already talking about Rally Day?

I’d like to thank everyone who has helped me out over the last two years as I learned my way around the Fellowship Commit-tee. Please, in turn, welcome Sonja Pedersen as the new Fel-lowship Committee Representative and give her all the assistance you can.

Have a great summer! -Cheryl Rydbom
