In each case, Jesus resists, citing words from Scripture to rebuke the devil’s temptation. Each temptation that Jesus faces offers insight into the spirituality we hope to develop as we keep the forty days of the Season of Lent. We can trust God to provide for our material needs. We worship God because God alone has dominion over us and our world. We can trust God to be faithful to his promises. Jesus' rejection of the devil's temptations shows that he will not put God to the test. Grounding himself on the Word and authority of Scripture, Jesus rebukes the devil by his confidence in God's protection and faithfulness. This Gospel highlights for us one of the central themes of the Season of Lent. We are dependent upon God for all that we have and all that we are. Anything that leads us to reject this dependency or to distrust its sufficiency, is a temptation from the devil. Luke ends his report of Jesus' temptation in the desert by noting that the devil departs for a time. The implication is that the devil will return. Jesus knows that he will be tempted again in the Garden of Gethsemane. The depth of Jesus' trust in God is shown most fully when Jesus rejects the temptation to turn away from the task God has given to him. Jesus' final rebuke of the devil is his sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus' responses to the temptations of the devil teach us how we can respond to temptation. As we start our journey through Lent, this Sunday's Gospel calls us to adopt the same confidence that Jesus had in the face of temptation: God's word alone will suffice, God's promise of protection can be trusted, and God alone is God. © Copyright Loyola Press, All Rights Reserved. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We aren’t just spiritual beings. We are also physical entities, and the way to the soul is through the body. That’s why Lenten discipline has historically centered on Fasting Almsgiving and Prayer.1

In Matthew 6:3-4, 6, 17-18, Scripture teaches us about almsgiving: “But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your father who sees in secret will repay you”. Almsgiving teaches us to separate ourselves from material possessions. By freely giving of our money and possessions we learn to trust the Lord more deeply for our own daily needs.

About prayer: “But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you”. An emphasis on prayer during Lent is a way to stir up our love and ardor by having a deepening conversation with the Almighty.

About fasting: “But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you”. Fasting is not just a spiritual diet. By denying our bodies, our physical hunger reminds us of the hunger of our souls for God, our longing for a deeper relationship with our Lord. Or offer your fasting up for someone who needs spiritual strength.

Let us pray:

My precious and crucified Lord, I offer You this Lent. I offer it to You with total abandonment and trust. I offer You my prayers, sacrifices and my very life this day. Do with me, Lord, as You will. I pray that this Lent will be fruitful. I know You have much to say to me and much to do in my life. May this Lent be a time through which Your mercy is poured in abundance into my soul, and into the souls of all Your faithful. Dearest Lord, help me to especially see my sin, this Lent. Humble me so that I may see clearly. Give me courage and strength to confess my sins, and to turn from them with all my heart.

In the love of Christ,
