«¿Qué es esto? ¡Una doctrina nueva, expuesta con autoridad!»
Marcos, 1, 27b-c
No podemos negar que autoridad, en este caso, se refiere necesariamente a un poder. Jesús ha recibido del Padre la autoridad necesaria para actuar en su nombre y enseñar una nueva doctrina. En el evangelio de Marcos encontramos el concepto de autoridad en relación con libertad, capacidad y poder. Jesús es el hombre libre, sin condicionamientos ni ataduras, capaz de actuar conforme a la voluntad de Dios. ¿Por qué tiene Jesús esta autoridad? Marcos lo explica desde la confesión de fe de los endemoniados: “Sé quién eres tú: el Santo de Dios.” Así se reconoce en el hombre Jesús su naturaleza divina. Podríamos considerar, avanzando un paso más adelante, el concepto de autoridad desde la capacidad de crear algo nuevo. Estamos ante Jesús que enseña una doctrina que resulta nueva para los que están escuchando. Ya no se trata de la opinión de los demás rabinos, tampoco de la transmisión oral de la enseñanza. Lo que encontramos en Jesús es algo definitivamente nuevo. Una enseñanza con autoridad. Una enseñanza con una nueva fuerza creativa (Cf. Apocalipsis 21, 5). Oremos para que Dios nos dé la misma libertad de Jesús y seamos enseñados por su Palabra. Que su fuerza y su poder nos den las energías necesarias para perseverar en nuestra lucha y avanzar las fronteras de su reino entre nosotros.

We cannot deny that authority, in this case, necessarily refers to power. Jesus has received from the Father the necessary authority to act in his name and teach a new doctrine. In Mark's Gospel we find the concept of authority in relation to freedom, capacity and power. Jesus is the free man, without conditioning or ties, capable of acting according to the will of God. Why does Jesus have this authority? Mark explains it from the confession of faith of the possessed: "I know who you are: the Holy One of God". Thus, Jesus' divine nature is recognized in the man Jesus. We could consider, going one step further, the concept of authority from the capacity to create something new. We are before Jesus who teaches a doctrine that is new for those who are listening. It is no longer a question of the opinion of the other rabbis, nor of the oral transmission of the teaching. What we find in Jesus is something definitely new. A teaching with authority. A teaching with a new creative force (cf. Revelation 21:5). Let us pray that God will give us the same freedom as Jesus and that we will be taught by his Word. May his strength and power give us the necessary energies to persevere in our struggle and advance the frontiers of his kingdom among us.

Every time I talk with teens about the story of creation in Genesis, it never fails that there is some boy who makes the same comment saying something along the lines of “well women messed up first and ruined everything so they’re to blame”. This then leads to some comment about women being lesser or something along those lines and it is very disappointing each time I hear it. This is what I tell my teens: Eve was not made from Adams head to be above him, nor was she made from his feet to be below him. Rather, Eve was made from Adams rib to be by his side and equal to him. In creation, both man and woman made a choice and that choice was to go against God’s will and eat of the forbidden fruit which was the original sin. We all have a choice when it comes to sin. No one can force us to sin. It is ultimately our decision just like it was for Adam and Eve. This week we are talking with our year 1 teens about God’s original plan for creation and how the fall of man (Adam & Eve) distorted God’s plan for humanity.

The University Series 2021 Virtually
During the season of Lent, The University Series offers a multitude of seminars connecting faith with real life in areas such as current events, contemporary moral issues,
evangelization, faith and science, marriage and family, church history, scripture, prayer, and other priorities set by the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Synod. Sessions include multi-media presentations and always allow time for your questions. In 2021, as The University Series celebrates its 20th anniversary, virtual presentations will be offered M-Th nights and Friday lunchtimes during Lent, with pre-registration only available on-line. There will be no mail-in registration.
Here are some important dates: January 30-31 Kick-Off Weekend
Catalogs will be available at all Masses,
at the discretion of parishes in accordance with county health guidelines.
On-line pre-registration opens for
discounted tickets. Purchase your Season Pass or register for individual
presentations at www.theuniversityseries.org.
February 12 Pre-registration closes.

Do you know what to do if someone is choking? Choking is one of the leading causes of accidental death, but many people do not know what to do if someone is choking near them. If a person is coughing, grabbing his or her throat, or passed out with no explanation, he/she could be choking. Utilizing abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver, could prevent suffocation. Parents should be knowledgeable as to how to perform this maneuver, and if possible, should attend a CPR training course so they are prepared, in the event that a child or adult is choking.
