RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH A COLA
Many people ring in the New Year with champagne. People who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) get to ring it in with a COLA. This year, more than 60 million Americans are re-ceiving a 1.5 percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) in their monthly benefit payment. The 1.5 percent COLA begins with increased bene-fits for more than 57 million Social Security benefi-ciaries in January 2015, and payments to more than 8 million SSI recipients in late December 2014.
Some other changes that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. For example, the maximum amount of earn-ings subject to the Social Security payroll tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $117,000, up from $113,700. Of the estimated 165 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2015, about 10 million will pay higher taxes as a result of the in-crease in the taxable maximum. Information about Medicare changes for 2015 is available at www.Medicare.gov. Visit www.SocialSecurity.gov/pressoffice to learn more about the COLA and other Social Security changes in 2015. Happy New Year from Social Security!
In our church, on the feast of Epipha-ny, we write initials over the door-way, what does this stand for or mean?
Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and
cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning. In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center are the initials of the traditional names of the three wise men: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the wise men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It reminds us of the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace. In some places, Epiphany is celebrated much like a mini-Christmas. Gifts are exchanged in memory of the gifts of the wise men and special meals are pre-pared. In any event, the manifestation of Christ as the light of the world is a time to seek God's blessing and rejoice in the gift of Jesus to us and to all the world. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc
DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY #149 JAN. 4, 2015 The Catholic Church’s stand against the federal health care mandate isn’t about access to contraception, which is widely available. It is about a government reg-ulation that is forcing the Church to act against its moral principles, thereby, vio-lating religious freedom. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your oppo-sition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Bur-well at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.
A CALL TO ACTORS! AUDITION THIS SUNDAY The Saint Ann Passion Play, celebrating its 50th Anniversary, will hold auditions Sunday, January 4th from 1-4pm in the basement of the church. All are wel-come and encouraged to try out. Plenty of roles, both large and small, are avail-able. A special note to all former cast and crew - we would really like to make this year’s cast a great mix of past actors and new ones. This year’s production will also include scenes for younger children. Rehearsals are on Sunday after-noons in the church basement.
