Spiritual direction vs. advice What is spiritual direction? How does it differ from counsel-ing and simply asking for religious advice? In spiritual direction, a person is guided in a process of reflection, self-discovery, and recognition of God’s pres-ence in human experience; the primary focus is on this indi-vidual’s relationship with God. Thus, in one sense, it is the Lord himself who is the “director” in all spiritual direction. In counseling, a person is also guided in a process of re-flection and self-discovery; but the primary focus is on human growth and development. Counseling does not presuppose a person’s faith or relationship with God; spiritual direction cannot be complete without it. Both spiritual direction and counseling share the same expectations of openness and honesty in the process; they share the same standards of confidentiality and professional conduct. Moreover, spiritual direction is similar to counseling in its aim toward human growth and development; but it fur-ther aims toward holiness and “toward ever more intimate union with Christ” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2014). That union is twofold: a personal relationship with Christ and one with Christ’s Church. “This union is called ‘mystical’ because it participates in the mystery of Christ through the sacraments” (CCC 2014). “All Christians in any state or walk of life are called to the fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity. All are called to holiness: Be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (CCC 2013). FR. BYRON MILLER

The first reading encourages us to keep our minds on God, not on worldly con-cerns. In the second reading, Paul sends Onesimus back to his owner Philemon, with the hope that Philemon will take him back not as a slave but as a brother. To-day’s Gospel reminds us that faithful disci-pleship requires taking up our cross each day and following Jesus. Jesus taught throughout his life that to live as his disciples, we must take up our cross each day and follow him. Doing so requires that we love him above all other people and things in our lives. It also re-quires a willingness to let go of anything that may hinder us in growing in our love for the Lord. We are to take up our cross and follow Jesus each day. A HOPE Appeal update as of today we have pledged $63,972.00 we still need $16, 034.00 to reach our parish goal. If you have yet to give a gift, please consider making a pledge for this year’s goal. Your gift helps so many throughout our diocesan church. A little smile from a kind parishioner = A grandmother takes her grandson to the beach. As he plays on the shore, a giant wave come in and violently takes the boy out to sea. The grandmother screams “Please God, save my little grandson!” Al-most immediately, another wave comes and deposits the boy unhurt on the shore. The grandmother says, “He had a hat!” Surely a note of our usual gratitude for God’s many blessings each day. We have many of our parishioners in nursing homes and the hospital, please pray for them each day along with their families. Let us also remember priestly vocations.

Pope Francis Speaks to our hearts!! BE MERCIFUL

GIVE FOOD, DRINK, AND CLOTHING Mercy moves us to keep an eye on those who circle around our households and families—friends, relatives and neighbors. We can extend our love to these others by welcoming them into our homes and offering them hospitality. Such hospitality has always been the mark of a Christian. By lending our ear, offering a bite to eat, or simply opening the door, we may change a life. Also consider those who have so much less than we do. We’ve all seen the homeless, the mentally ill who live in public places, and families struggling for a meal. This work of mercy calls us to think of them daily and make choices that are based on the welfare of these poor ones, and not only on our own welfare.
