Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research

VOLUME 14

Aims and Scope:Paleoenvironmental research continues to enjoy tremendous interest and progressin the scientific community. The overall aims and scope of the Developments inPaleoenvironmental Research book series is to capture this excitement and doc-ument these developments. Volumes related to any aspect of paleoenvironmentalresearch, encompassing any time period, are within the scope of the series. Forexample, relevant topics include studies focused on terrestrial, peatland, lacustrine,riverine, estuarine, and marine systems, ice cores, cave deposits, palynology, iso-topes, geochemistry, sedimentology, paleontology, etc. Methodological and taxo-nomic volumes relevant to paleoenvironmental research are also encouraged. Theseries will include edited volumes on a particular subject, geographic region, or timeperiod, conference and workshop proceedings, as well as monographs. Prospectiveauthors and/or editors should consult the series editor for more details. The serieseditor also welcomes any comments or suggestions for future volumes.

Preface

South America is a unique place where a number of past climate archives are avail-able from tropical to high latitude regions. It thus offers a unique opportunity toexplore past climate variability along a latitudinal transect from the Equator to Polarregions and to study climate teleconnections. Most climate records from tropical andsubtropical South America for the past 20,000 years have been interpreted as localresponses to shift in the mean position and intensity of the InterTropical Conver-gence Zone due to tropical and extratropical forcings or to changes in the SouthAmerican Summer Monsoon. Further South, the role of the Southern Hemispherewesterly winds on global climate has been highly investigated with both paleodataand coupled climate models. However the regional response over South Americaduring the last 20,000 years is much more variable from place to place than previ-ously thought. The factors that govern the spatial patterns of variability on millennialscale resolution are still to be understood.

The question of past natural rates and ranges of climate conditions over SouthAmerica is therefore of special relevance in this context since today millions ofpeople live under climates where any changes in monsoon rainfall can lead tocatastrophic consequences.

We thus propose contributions that deal with tropical, temperate and high lat-itudes climate variability in South America with different type of archives andproxies on various timescales from the Last Glacial Maximum to the last thou-sand years. South America also offers a unique opportunity to examine climatefluctuations at various altitudes. The originality of this work is that it offers bothobservations and modelling works: we present contributions that aim at document-ing paleoclimate histories and modelling studies are also included to help shed lighton the relevant processes.

This book stems out from a 2006 Fall meeting American Geophysical Union(San Francisco, USA) session dealing with both overview and original researcheson Past climate variability from the last glacial maximum to the Holocene in SouthAmerica and surrounding regions. The 16 chapters in this volume are organizedinto three major parts. Part I, including 6 chapters, attempts at drawing a consistentpicture for the Last Glacial Maximum in South America. Part II contains 4 chaptersdealing with modern and past tropical and extra-tropical teleconnections with SouthAmerica relying on both models and low to high latitudes ice core data comparison.
