Passive Range of Motion - Front Limb

The 3 main joints of the forelimb are the Shoulder, the Elbow, and the Carpus.

Have your dog lay on their side. Start by gently holding the limb straight out in a neutral

position.

Gently stroke the limb.

Place one hand under the carpus, place the other hand at the back of the limb above the

elbow.

Flex all three joints of the front limb toward the body. Hold for 10 sec.

ALWAYS PUSHING NEVER PULLING

Then stretch the limb until it is stretched out straight.

Next the straight limb is stretched forward toward your dog’s head. Hold for 10 sec.

Then, the straight limb is brought backwards toward the hind limb. Hold for 10 sec.

Straighten-Massage-Flex-Straighten-Forward-Backward

**Be careful not to rotate or torque the limb. Keep the limb parallel like the swinging arm

of a pendulum, making sure to keep the limb parallel to the trunk (its natural position) to

prevent torque of the joints.

Passive Range of Motion - Hind Limb

The 3 main joints of the hind limb are the Hip, the Stifle (knee), and the Tarsus

(Hock).

Have your dog lay on their side. Start by gently holding the limb straight out in a

neutral

position.

Gently stroke the limb.

Place one hand under the femur, place the other hand at the back of the limb above the

tarsus.

Flex all three joints of the hind limb toward the body. Hold for 10 sec.

ALWAYS PUSHING NEVER PULLING

Then stretch the limb until it is stretched out straight.

Next the straight limb is stretched forward toward your dog’s elbow. Hold for 10 sec.

Then the straight limb is brought backwards behind them. Hold for 10 sec.
