Decision making: avere vs. essere
Regular verbs (anything that’s not reflexive) take either ESSERE or AVERE as their helping verbs.
How do we know which one to use?
Reflexive verbs ALWAYS use ESSERE 3 tests to do on the verbs
Test #1
Use ESSERE when
you can’t “do” these verbs
“to” SOMETHING ELSE–
Add “it” at the end of the verb to see if it makes sense.
I went it?
I arrived it?I came it?
Test #2Casa d’essere – always take ESSERE
Andare andato
Arrivare arrivato
Diventare diventato
Entrare entrato*
Essere stato
Morire morto

We know…1. Verbs in past tense have 2 parts (or 3 parts if they are
reflexive)
2. The first part is a form of ESSERE or AVERE that matches our subject; that is our “helping” verb
3. We can memorize or “test” our verbs to see if they get essere or avere
4. Reflexive verbs ALWAYS get essere as the helping verb
5. The second part of our past tense verb ends in –ato,
-uto, -ito, or is irregular
6. When our helping verb is essere, our last letters need to match our subject: o,a,i,e
Now let’s practice
