2008/09

With your partnership, our mission is to nurture the intellectual, artistic and professional development of students and community members through rigorous visual arts and design education.

Dear Friends: we’re partnering for a busy, creative, productive year

ANNUAL REPORT 2008/09 THE CLEVELAND INSTITUTE OF ART | www.cia.edu

As you will read in this report, 2008-2009 at The Cleveland Institute of Art was a busy, creative and productive period. We collaborated with numerous corporations and non-profit organizations to create great opportunities for students including internships, exhibitions, competitions, placement of student works in collections and special recognition in national competitions. Faculty have had a remarkable year, with several winning prestigious awards for their teaching, their design and creative art works, their scholarly activities and professional development. In addition to these awards, at least 10 faculty members had residencies at highly selective art centers from the French countryside to the Georgia mountains to the California coast.

In our sustained commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities for students, faculty and staff, we are making great progress toward modernizing and unifying our campus. Our building project commenced in May 2009 as we embarked on the full renovation of the Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts, which will be completed by the end of 2010. By January of 2011, construction will start on a new building to the west of the McCullough building and fully interconnected to it. The

visually distinctive new campus will be a major catalyst for what will be a revitalized neighborhood within University Circle, and our modern, climate-controlled and energy-efficient facilities will benefit aspiring artists and designers for generations to come.

If all of our achievements happened in a vacuum, we would have a hard time attracting new students and new friends to the Institute. Thanks to restructuring efforts in the Marketing and Admissions departments, the CIA story is being told more clearly and effectively than ever… in Northeast Ohio and across the nation. We are delighted to have terrific new staff and leadership (see the story on page 7) guided by a keen vision and a farsighted new strategic plan now in place.

Developing the five-year strategic plan to guide the Institute from 2010 through 2014 was a year-long process that began in late 2008. The process involved trustees, faculty, staff, students, and a consulting firm, WolfBrown, that helped map out the future of the Institute. In numerous meetings and discussions, we reworked the mission, vision, and values statements; formulated strategic goals; created strategies and action steps; and developed timelines, budgets, and performance measures. The strategic plan is available as a PDF on the Institute’s website at www.cia.edu.

Finally, in what has been called the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, we are more grateful than ever to you, our loyal friends and alums who have continued to provide valued support to the Institute through your very generous charitable giving. We greatly appreciate your ongoing investment in the future of art and design.

For three decades, the Cleveland-based Martha Holden Jennings Foundation has supported Cleveland Institute of Art outreach efforts that improve learning and instruction in the visual arts for children, teens and art teachers in Northeast Ohio. Jennings Foundation grants have allowed CIA to sponsor:

• the Cuyahoga County Regional Scholastic Art Competition and Exhibition, for which thousands of Greater Cleveland junior high and high school students have produced their best work and received a level of recognition otherwise unavailable to most young artists; and

• Basic Art Support in the Curriculum (B.A.S.I.C.), a program that offers weekend and summer workshops for art teachers and that sends CIA artists into Northeast Ohio schools to teach art classes directly to students while art teachers observe.

Lakewood High School art teacher Jan McAndrew appreciates all of these Jennings-supported learning opportunities. In recent years, she has submitted her students’ artwork to Scholastics; had a CIA artist come to her classroom to give a demonstration on making clay tiles; and taken B.A.S.I.C. workshops at the Institute in enameling, printmaking and silk-screening.

“B.A.S.I.C. workshops are great because, as teachers, we’re in the classroom giving, giving, giving and this is an opportunity to be a receiver instead of a giver,” McAndrew said. “Taking a B.A.S.I.C. course is very rejuvenating because we’re with other art teachers and we have a chance to talk about techniques, creative ideas and classroom management. We’re working, we’re creating and that motivates us to go back to the class-room again, teach our students new techniques in new media, and give some more.

“On top of that, we’re actually giving students tangible evidence that we are lifelong learners,” McAndrew said.

Exhibitions Gallery exhibitions draw thousands to Institute

“Andy Warhol Prints: 1974-1986, Works from the Cochran Collection,” the 2009 summer show in the Institute’s Reinberger Galleries, attracted thousands of visitors eager to see this collection of 36 works including the “Myth Series,” “Cowboys and Indians” and other iconic images.

Best, of all, thanks to Jennings Foundation support, these CIA programs are “affordable for me on a teacher’s salary,” she added.

Dr. William Hiller, Executive Director of the Jennings Foundation, said the Jennings Board of Directors recently reaffirmed “improving learning in the arts” as one of the foundation’s six priorities for funding. “They understand that the arts are an important form of communication and help to preserve our culture,” Hiller said of the Jennings directors. “Our support is tangible recognition of the fact that CIA has always valued innovation, quality and collaboration.”

Lisa Kramer Reichel, CIA’s director of Continuing Education + Community Outreach, said “We are so grateful to the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation for taking an interest in the success of these programs and providing the funding that makes them possible. What a wonderful commitment to children and teachers in Northeast Ohio.”

Other exhibitions featured during the year included:

• “Just Suppose: The Images of Jerry Uelsmann & Maggie Taylor,” a collection of distinctive photographic collages and montages;

• “(RE)Imaging Photography,” an exhibition of still and moving images by photographers and videographers from nine countries;

• “Cultural Minds: The Cleveland Arts Prize Portraits 2007-2008,” a collection of photographic portraits by Robert Muller ’87;

• “Urban Breakdown,” a collection of two-dimensional works in glass by Scott Goss ’06;

• “move it, move it: IMAGE & NARRATIVE,” works by students in the Integrated Media Environment;

• The 2008 Faculty Show,

• The 63rd annual Student Independent Show (SIE),

• The 2009 Cuyahoga County Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition,

• The Spring Show, featuring student work from all years, all majors,

• The BFA show, featuring the capstone exhibitions of work by graduating students.

Above, SIE 63 drew an appreciative crowd.

Right, Missy and Wesley Cochran loaned their collection of Andy Warhol prints to the Institute last summer.

Ceramics Department Head Judith Salomon and retired Jewelry + Metals faculty member James Mazurkewicz ’67 were each honored with the 2009 Schreckengost Teaching Award at commencement in May.

The award was established in 2000 by President David Deming ’67 to honor the late artist and industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost ’29 and recognize teaching excellence at the Institute over a period of at least 10 years.

After earning an MFA in Metalry at Syracuse University, Mazurkewicz came back to the Institute and taught for 20 years, from 1968 through 1989, educating hundreds of aspiring jewelry and metal artists. He then became the

master jeweler-goldsmith for Cleveland’s storied Potter and Mellon fine gifts company, where he painstakingly crafted masterpieces in the form of fine jewelry until retiring in December 2008.

Salomon, earned her BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1975 and her MFA at New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred, New York in 1977, the same year she began teaching at the Institute. In the decades since, she has nurtured, challenged and inspired hundreds of ceramicists. A successful studio artist, she has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council and she is a winner of the Cleveland Arts Prize, among many other honors.

The Institute bestowed its highest honor, the Medal for Excellence, on Ellen Stirn Mavec at the 21st Annual Charles E. Burchfield ’16 Society Dinner on October 17, 2008. The Medal for Excellence recognizes those who have made significant contributions to the arts through their own artistic pursuits or through their exceptional service and philanthropy.

Early in her career, Mavec devoted substantial time and energy to working in development for the former advocacy group NOVA (the New Organization for the Visual Arts) and establishing the Young Friends of the Cleveland Museum of Art. She has also lectured on decorative arts and, in 1989, she purchased and assumed leadership of the distinguished jewelry and fine gifts company Potter and Mellen, which has had strong ties to the Institute for over a century.

Since 1997, Mavec has served as president of one of the Northeast Ohio’s leading family foundations, The Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation, which was established in 1955 by her grandfather, Kelvin Smith. The Smith Foundation makes grants primarily to Greater Cleveland organizations working in the arts, culture, education and other fields and has been a generous supporter of the Institute.

Mavec is a vice president of the board of trustees of the Cleveland Museum of Art and co-chairs the museum’s current capital campaign committee. She is a member of the board of directors of The Cleveland State University Foundation and a life trustee of the Great Lakes Theater Festival. In 2003, the YWCA named Mavec one of Greater Cleveland’s Women of Achievement.

It wasn’t so long ago that most of today’s CIA students were working with crayons and rounded-edge scissors when they wanted to make art. Twenty-three CIA students tapped into their memories of those childhood days when a global manufacturer of creative activity kits for children approached the Institute for fresh ideas.

Cleveland-based Creativity for Kids/Faber-Castell USA® commissioned these CIA students to illustrate a new line of coloring and “artivity” books that would inspire children with interesting designs and engaging activities. The books went into production this summer and will be sold throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“We found it very inspirational to work with the Institute students,” said Phyllis Brody, co-founder of Creativity for Kids. “It was wonderful to see how the students took the ideas even further than we had expected and really developed comprehensive concepts for how the themes would come together.”

Numerous other community partnerships flourished during the 2008-2009 academic year when CIA students:

• Designed and built workstations, using materials reclaimed from abandoned houses in Cleveland by the group A Piece of Cleveland (APOC), in a project funded by the Cleveland Foundation;

• Partnered with the Coventry Village Special Improvement District and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to present a weekend-long art fair;

• Visited several Cleveland high schools to talk with teens about educational and career opportunities in art and design;

• Competed to have their work chosen for the collections of Case Western Reserve University’s Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations, University Hospitals Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute, and Avery Dennison Corporation;

• Donated artwork for auctions to benefit the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland and the Public Animal Welfare Society (PAWS);

During the 2008-2009 academic year, the Institute welcomed new leaders in Admissions and Marketing, both of whom brought years of experience and fresh approaches to their respective fields. Mark Inglis joined the staff in January 2009 as Vice President of Marketing and Communications. He has more than 20 years’ experience in art direction and design that includes extensive work in integrated brand development through strategic planning and print publications, websites, events, and merchandising. Before accepting the Institute position, he served in the dual capacity of Deputy Director and Creative Director of Communications at Columbia University’s Earth Institute.

Robert Borden was appointed Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid effective June 1, 2009. Over the past 14 years, Borden has served in enrollment management, admissions, financial aid, and international student affairs capacities at the Eastman School of Music and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, where he helped both institutions attain their enrollment goals.

“I’m thrilled that we were able to attract such capable professionals to fill these important roles at the Institute,” said CIA President David Deming ’67. “Bob and Mark are both enthusiastic and innovative in their approaches to promoting the Institute. Bob and his team are reaching out effectively to prospective students across the country; Mark and his team are building awareness of the CIA story to local, regional and national audiences.”

Mark Inglis

• Created artwork for three exhibitions at the Cleveland Foundation’s headquarters;

• Decorated dinosaur sculptures for the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo;

• Teamed up with Home Depot, the Cleveland Browns and the nonprofit KABOOM to create a neighborhood playground in Cleveland;

• Shot portraits of pediatric cancer patients at the Cleveland Clinic in collaboration with the non-profit Flashes of Hope;

• Exhibited their botanical illustrations in the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Guren Gallery; and

• Generated fresh design concepts for corporations including Nissan, General Electric, Moen, CADACO and STERIS and for the Fowler Center for Sustainable Value at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.

CIA Endowment Fares Well in a Difficult Market The Institute’s endowment assets include CIA’s managed portfolio and various endowment funds held in trust for the Institute’s benefit. The market value of the Institute’s endowment assets at the beginning of the fiscal year was $30.2 million, and declined by approximately 32% when investment and credit markets in the United States and around the world experienced significant challenges related to liquidity, valuation and the extension of credit. Improved market performance in recent months has enabled the Institute to recover some of these losses, ending the 2008-2009 fiscal year with a total negative return of 18% which compares favorably to the 26% negative return of the S&P 500 for the same period. As of June 30, 2009 the market value of all of the Institute’s endowment assets was $22.5 million.

Tuition and Fees / 72%

The Cleveland Institute of Art’s annual operating budget is $15 million, before considering student financial aid. Income from tuition and fees represented 72% of all revenues in 2008-2009. Each year the Institute’s endowment assets provide annual operating support for student scholarships, faculty development, faculty salaries, facilities maintenance and other costs. In 2008-2009 this endowment support accounted for 11% of all operating revenues. Contributed income – from the Annual Fund and other restricted giving from individuals and organizations that were themselves suffering in the weak economy – still provided 12% of operating revenues.

Given the economic climate, Institute leaders are particularly appreciative of this generous support from people and entities that value education in art and design. In good times and bad, gifts to the Annual Fund for unrestricted purposes,

CIA #1 for Alumni GivingDuring 2008-2009, the Institute ranked #1 among American art schools in terms of percentage of alumni who give to the Annual Fund! Year after year, through their generosity, CIA alumni send a powerful message that they value the education they received and that they want current and future students to enjoy the benefits of a high caliber visual arts education.

In addition to grateful grads, other individuals as well as corporations, foundations and government funders placed their confidence in the Institute with gifts and grants.

Collectively, our supporters generously contributed more than $880,000 toward the Institute’s annual operating budget. Of that, 35% came from individual friends, 22% from govern-ment appropriations, 15% from alumni, 14% from foundations, 11% from corporations, and 3% from other organizations.

These Annual Fund gifts provide critically important resources for operating the college, including expenditures for: attracting and retaining top-quality faculty members; broadening our pool of unrestricted scholarship resources; and presenting exhibitions, lectures and other public events. Beyond the very significant support provided to the Annual Fund, another $277,000 was contributed during the 2008-2009 year to named scholarships and for other restricted purposes.

Honor Roll of Donors

During the 2008-2009 fiscal year, nearly 1,200 individuals, corporations, foundations and organizations contributed to our Annual Fund, made restricted gifts for scholarship support or other important initiatives, or left bequests to benefit the Institute. We thank and honor these friends and alumni, whose generosity helps us to bridge the inevitable gap between operating expenses and revenue from tuition and endowments.

We want to pay special tribute to the 167 individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations that qualified for the Institute’s Charles E. Burchfield ’16 Society, which recognizes contributors who donate $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund.

To all those who contributed to the Institute during the 2008-2009 fiscal year and thereby earned a place on our Honor Roll of Donors, we extend our sincere thanks.

PORTRAIT OF A COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN

Since its founding in 1882, The Cleveland Institute of Art has been committed to helping students become self-reliant innovators and creative leaders. One of the nation’s premier colleges of art and design, the Institute is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design.

The Institute is nationally recognized for combining a strong foundation in visual art theory with solid instruction in the liberal arts, unmatched studio experience and opportunities for practical application of skills and knowledge through sponsored projects and internships. Our curriculum fosters critical thinking, problem solving and risk taking and prepares the next generation of artists and designers to improve our society and enrich our culture. We extend our programs to the public through gallery exhibitions, lectures, our Continuing Education program for adults and children and The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, an art and independent film program.
